behind the scenes of issue #1

- EDITORS LETTER Firstly, I would like to welcome you to one half of Heads and Tails Magazine. The magazine has been split into two parts, so if you’re the kind of guy who would choose brogues over trainers, then this is the side for you! It often seems like the everyday, fashion conscious guy has lost his voice in the fashion market; yet, we are shopping and buying more clothes than ever before. What a shame that every men’s fashion magazine I come across focuses on showcasing high fashion clothes, with a price tag that is more than the average monthly salary. So, where does that leave us? There are so many guys out there who want to look dapper, but, who are on a budget, so I have tackled this problem head on and made everything in this magazine under £200. Next problem: Every men’s fashion magazine is littered with adverts, along with irrelevant and uninteresting page fillers, that, well, make little sense. So, this magazine has taken extra precautions so you can sit back and enjoy your read, with articles from fashion and girls to hair; this is your fashion bible!

Once you have eaten and shopped yourself out, make your way to the new cable cars that let you see all of Greenwich and beyond for £4, and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, finish off your day by climbing the O2. REGENTS PARK OPEN AIR THEATRE Regents Park Open Air Theatre marries all the three quintessentially British things together. Shakespeare, the theatre and Regents Park. Yes, Shakespeare, that name makes most of us shudder because we remember it back to our GCSEs, but the Regents Park Open Air Theatre is the perfect way to banish all those negative thoughts you ever had about Shakespeare. What better way is there to spend a lazy summer evening in the heart of London, sitting in a 1000 seater open air auditorium?

Every Friday night during June and July London Zoo is giving you the opportunity to release the big kid inside of you. Apart from having the usual animal tours, London Zoo is letting anyone over 18 late admission into the Zoo. You can expect exotic street food, improvised comedy, twisted cabaret, roving performances, pop up bars, and carousel rides. To top it all off, a silent disco will be on so you can unleash the party animal inside of you!

With Love G WE CAUGHT UP WITH MODEL HOLLIE WHO GAVE US HER CRUCIAL DOS AND DON’TS FOR FIRST DATES. Do look smart. Nothing is more attractive than a guy in a suit. A three piece suit is even better. Do wear aftershave or cologne, but don’t wear so much that my eyes water everytime I get a whiff of it! One or two small cheesy jokes during the evening can be quite funny- do not exceed three. Eat properly with a knife and fork. Yes it may be 20 | Heads&Tails 20 | Heads&Tails

a little old fashioned, but nothing is more unattractive than watching a man eat his dinner like a cave man.

Do pull my chair out if we go out for a meal, it just shows you have been brought up, not dragged up.

Ask me lots of questions. Nothing is more attractive than a guy who shows he is interested in you.

Chat up lines are the biggest turn offs. You could be David Beckham but if you came out with the phrase ‘Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?’, the date would be over, there and then.

Make eye contact when you’re talking to me; don’t think I won’t catch you glancing at my boobs. It just makes the night so uncomfortable. Do talk about your family, it shows you have pride. Do pay for the first date, especially if you have asked me to go, and do not use a coupon! Do speak properly and pronounce yours words correctly, and don’t use words you don’t know the meaning of.

Do not wear a top that shows more cleavage than Katie Price. Do not even breathe a word about any past relationships or flings. Do not be on your phone 24/7 and brag about your amazingly high score on Angry Bird- it shows you waste your spare time. Do not refer to women as birds. We do not have wings or beaks.

Girls Bad breath is social suicide. Brush your teeth, bring chewing gum, buy mints, just avoid smelly breath at all costs. Do not abbreviate your words when you are texting me, it shows that you are either: A) lazy B) stupid C) illiterate

interview with kevin luchman We sat down with winner of the Men’s British Hairdressing Award; Kevin Luchman who gave us the low down of all things hair. Firstly, congratulations on winning the Men’s British Hairdresser Award! When did you start hairdressing and how long have you been doing it? I originally started off as a self-taught barber and started cutting my friends’ hair at home in my kitchen! I then started working at different barbers and after three years I started working for Toni & Guy, and here I am today! So in the past ten years what has been your favourite and least favourite hairstyle? Obviously going back to my barbering, I love all the skin fades and hair fades, cropped fringes, blunt cuts, its always really strong. Ones I dislike? I would definitely say that old school Justin Bieber, sweepy fringe look, just didn’t do it for me at all!

up of product is a good idea, so in some cases, once a week! What are the most in trend hairstyles for this coming summer? Short! Especially in the summer, it keeps you cool and it’s easy. Do you have any tips for guys who are growing their hair and get to that annoying in between stage? Keep growing it! Look after it so it grows thick and healthy. I am also seeing a lot of guys sporting topknots, so maybe tie your hair up.

How often should a guy get his hair cut? Depending on the length, I recommend every 4 to 6 weeks, if not every 3 to 5 weeks. Lastly! Gel or Wax? Gel. You can work it on both wet and dry hair!

What is your advice on guys colouring their hair? Don’t do it! Embrace the natural colour that you have!

So how often should a guy wash his hair?

And how about any tips for guys who are beginning to go thin on top?

Depending on product use and hair type and length, on average about three times a week. It all depends on what sort of look you’re going for. If you want that messed up, rugged look, leaving a build

Go shorter, it will make it look and feel fuller and thicker. Work with more fringes which helps hide any receding hair lines! The longer the hair is, the more it splits and the thinner it gets. Heads&Tails | 23
