The public is invited to attend this early holiday celebration which will feature live music, hot chocolate, cookies, a Toys for Tots collection, crafts for the kids, a large Albuquerque frame (great for holiday photos), and the tree itself. “We are honored that this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree will once again be stopping in our city,” said Roger Newall, Veterans Affairs Liaison with the City of Albuquerque. “Many local entities have worked together to make this event happen, and we are excited to not only celebrate the upcoming holiday season, but to give back to our communities and forests. We hosted the tree last year, so we were prepared to make this event even bigger and better. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.” For nearly five decades, the beautiful and iconic U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree has been selected from a National Forest to be presented to the American people. This year’s tree, hailing from the Colville National Forest in Washington State, is an 88-foot Engelmann Spruce. The tree will make stops at 22 cities across the country before it reaches Washington, D.C. on November 25th. Albuquerque is the only stop in New Mexico. Once the tree arrives at the U.S. Capitol building, it will be decorated with thousands of lights and handcrafted ornaments made by Washingtonians. SkyBitz, an asset tracking and information management solutions leader, will be tracking the tree for the seventh year on its trek across the United States. Visit www.TrackTheTree.com to follow the journey or follow SkyBitz at @TrackTheTree on Twitter.

Los Poblanos Receives National Award T

he National Trust for Historic Preservation has presented its Trustees Emeritus Award for Excellence in the Stewardship of Historic Sites to Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm.

NM Favorote Coffee Now in Convenient Single Serve Packs L

“Los Poblanos is a true gem for the community and for visitors from across the globe,” said Stephanie Meeks, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “Its natural beauty and comfort–combined with its fascinating history and character –make it one of the most magnificent historic properties in the Southwest.”

ocally owned and family operated New Mexico Piñon Coffee Company announced today that they are now manufacturing single serve pods for One-Cup coffee makers. “We are very excited to be the only company in New Mexico to produce these single serve pods in-house. SingleCup machines have become extremely popular and many of our customers have been asking for single-serve pods of our coffee. We wanted to make them sooner, but because of patent issues with Keurig, they would have had to be made at their facility. We simply didn’t want our product being manufactured out of state and beyond our quality control,” says company spokeswoman Aleta Hallemeier. “Now that the patent has expired, we are in full swing with production and have even hired more help to keep up with the demand.”

The National Preservation Awards are given to individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies and corporations that have advanced their communities through preservation of architectural and cultural heritage, according to the National Trust. - ItsATrip.org

New Mexico Piñon Coffee’s original blending of hand-picked local piñon and high quality Arabica coffee has made them a local favorite. You will recognize the bright red bags on store shelves. Now you can find that same delicious coffee in 18-count boxes of single-serve pods. ItsATrp.org

The award was given to members of the Rembe family last Friday during the 2013 National Preservation Conference in Indianapolis, Ind. It was one of 18 award-winners honored by the National Trust.

Tips For Increasing Your Financial Security

I

f you’re not sure how you are going to reach your financial goals, there’s helpful news. Here are four tips to navigate the changing economic conditions and keep your finances under control.

1. Lower your tax burden by saving as much as you can in your 401(k). No matter what your tax rate is, saving for retirement in a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan can help reduce your taxes and boost retirement security. Contributions to a traditional 401(k) aren’t subject to income tax withholding and aren’t included in your taxable wages. While you pay taxes on contributions to a Roth 401(k), your earnings are taxfree. To see if you’re doing all you can to reduce your tax burden while saving for retirement, you can use the online 401(k) “Save the Max” calculator from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a securities regulator. 2. Start a rainy-day fund. Building a rainy-day fund is one of the most important things you can do to maintain financial security. The savings will give you a cushion to handle a short-term job loss, a surprise car repair or some other emergency. Begin by saving at least one month of your current salary in a federally insured savings account. If you can, save up to three months of your salary. If saving is hard for you, then start small. If you start saving $10 a week right now, by this time next year, you’d have a rainy-day fund of over $500. 3. Avoid credit card debt. In difficult economic times, it can be easy to rack up debt. Make it a goal to use credit sparingly, and try to pay all your credit bills in full and on time. If you can’t pay your whole bill, every dollar you pay above the minimum payment can lower your interest payments. 4. Do a yearly background check on your investment professional. Investing a few minutes to take this free and easy step could save you money

and trouble down the road. You can use FINRA’s online tool, BrokerCheck, to research the background of investment professionals and firms. Make it a habit to do a yearly check to see if there’s any new information you should know about. FINRA is the largest independent regulator for all securities firms doing business in the United States. Its mission is to protect America’s investors by making sure the securities industry operates fairly and honestly. (NAPSI)

Technical Training Key To Successful Manufacturing Careers

G

ood news for people concerned about employment in America today: Well-paying jobs in the manufacturing sector—actually, more than 600,000 of them—are waiting for workers who have been properly trained. That’s why now may be the time to take a second look at a career in manufacturing. Why are so many skilled labor jobs unfilled? Part of it has to do with perception. Many people, especially young people, think a career in manufacturing involves working in noisy, dirty surroundings in a job that gathers little respect and less attention. Those stereotypes may have been more accurate decades ago, but are really not today. Manufacturing plants and facilities are now highly automated, and it takes a great deal of training and knowledge to operate the machinery and equipment. People can’t simply walk in off the street and get those jobs. As high school students think about plans following graduation, a career in a skilled labor field isn’t top of mind with most. In fact, a recent poll found that while 70 percent of Americans think manufacturing is the most important industry as far as effect on the national economy goes, only 30 percent say they’d encourage their children to pursue a manufacturing career. While conventional four-year college programs are a good fit for some,

many students would thrive in a technical education program if given the chance. Often in only two years, a young man or woman can get a technical degree, start working a meaningful job that offers career advancement, and make a decent living doing so. The average hourly wage for manufacturing jobs is about $24, according to Businessweek.com. The private sector is doing its part to encourage manufacturing careers. Many technical schools and community colleges are partnering with Snapon Incorporated to teach specific disciplines designed to give students added skills to make them more employable. The company is a leading manufacturer of tools, equipment and diagnostics for the transportation, aviation, aerospace and manufacturing sectors, and has developed certification programs for students to receive extra training in certain technical disciplines. The goal of the Snap-on certifications is not to teach how machinery operates or how an aircraft flies, but rather, to show students the proper and best way to use specific tools and equipment to become more productive in their jobs. Most Snap-on certification courses comprise 16 hours of instruction and are blended into the school’s existing technical course program. More than 100 technical schools across the country offer certifications as part of their curriculum. To facilitate the certifications in the partnering schools, Snap-on works with the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3), an organization that validates and oversees the certification assessment standards. Straight Talk On Scoliosis

R

ecent research may bring good news to the one in every 1,000 children diagnosed with scoliosis and their families. Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes the back to have an abnormal curve. According to Anthony Sin, M.D., board-certified neurosurgeon and spine specialist at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Shreveport, parents should watch for “a visible curve in the spine, uneven hips, a protruding shoulder blade or shoulders that are not even.” You may notice your child’s clothes are not fitting correctly or that hems are not hanging evenly. In some cases, your child’s spine may appear crooked or his or her ribs may protrude. Some children with mild spinal curves may require no treatment. For those who do need treatment, your primary pediatrician may refer you to an orthopaedic spine specialist for the best plan based on your child’s age and the degree and pattern of the curve and the type of scoliosis. Common treatments include:

A Lovely Way To Help Kids

H

ere’s a sweet way to help feed hungry children: Give yourself or someone else the gift of a special-edition skin cream. One in five children struggles with hunger. In response, Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign brings nutrition to kids in need. To help, 100 percent of net profits, up to $100,000, of the Kiehl’s Since 1851 new Limited Edition scents—Grapefruit and Coriander—of Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter will be donated to the campaign. Sofie Shore, the 11-year-old daughter of Share Our Strength co-founder Debbie Shore, designed the labels for the limited edition charitable products. The ultracreamy yet luxuriously whipped ultralight formula from the venerable New York-based purveyor of fine-quality skin and hair care is quickly absorbed to help skin retain its natural moisture balance. It’s available at Kiehl’s retail stores and www.Kiehls.com and through Kiehl’s specialty retail partners, such as Nordstrom. For further facts on helping hungry kids, go to NoKidHungry.org. • Observation—If the curve measures less than 25 degrees, typically, no treatment is needed other than doctors examining the child every four to six months. • Surgery—often with implants. • Bracing—In some cases, physicians recommend their patients to be fitted for a brace to prevent the curve from worsening. A study supported by Shriners Hospitals for Children and others, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, indicates that this can be quite effective. The Bracing in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Trial compared the risk of curve progression in adolescents who wore a brace with those who did not. In the study, 72 percent who received bracing were successful.* Those who wore their brace an average of 13 hours a day had a success rate of 90 to 93 percent. “Knowing—with confidence—that bracing is effective changes the treatment paradigm,” said Matthew Dobbs, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon at Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis and lead investigator for the Shriners Hospitals portion of the study. “We can now say, for a specific patient population, that we can avoid the need for surgery through bracing.”

The study is just one way Shriners Hospitals for Children changes lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Its 23 facilities throughout North America provide advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. - (NAPSI)

New Design For Helping Kids Beat Cancer And Blood Disorders

W

hile for most young people the teen years are challenging enough, for some, there are further complications—and one such young woman turned those into a way to help others. Here’s her story: Michelle Nguyen from Johns Creek, Georgia has a rare blood disorder called thalassemia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with thalassemia have a genetic defect of their red blood cells that affects the cells’ ability to produce normal hemoglobin. Red blood cells use hemoglobin to carry oxygen to tissues. As a result of the defect, most forms of thalassemia produce a chronic, lifelong anemia. Nguyen’s had it since she can remember and needs routine blood transfusions to maintain her strength. Every three weeks or so, she and her mother are off to the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center in Atlanta to go through a process that should never be “routine” for a 14-year-old, but like most child patients, she takes it in stride. What Nguyen really needs is a bone marrow transplant, but in order to have that procedure, she needs to find a match, which is no easy task, especially for someone of Asian descent. In spite of the efforts of such celebrities as Robin Roberts of “Good

Morning America,” who have championed the cause, Asians and AfricanAmericans are not well represented on the national bone marrow registry. There are 10.5 million potential donors on the list and only about 7 percent are Asian and another 7 percent are African-American. Sixty-seven percent of potential donors on the list are white. Recently, while at the cancer center for her treatments, Nguyen entered a contest to design the annual Aflac Holiday Duck for the 2013 season. Every year, the insurance company produces a plush duck and sells it online at www.Aflacholidayduck.com and at participating Macy’s stores. All the net proceeds go to the nearest participating childhood cancer facility to where it was purchased. So far, the program has raised more than $3 million of the $83 million that Aflac has come up with for childhood cancer. Nguyen was thrilled to know that her design won the contest and so will help other kids who are going through the same types of trials that she goes through. She wants to use her newfound stardom to amplify the need for marrow donors, the need for improved childhood cancer treatments and additional research. Nguyen’s Holiday Duck comes in both a 6- and 10-inch version and will be available through November and December. (NAPSI)

It’s Complicated: Diabetes And Your Dental Health

A

recent study in The Journal of the American Dental Association found that one out of five cases of total tooth loss in the United States is linked to diabetes. While complications are part of managing diabetes, for the nearly 26 million people in the U.S. living with the condition, tooth loss and other dental health problems are unlikely to be on their radar. When it comes to diabetes and dental health, research suggests that the connection actually goes both ways. On the one hand, because of lowered resistance to infection and a longer healing process, gum disease appears to be more frequent and more severe among those with diabetes. On the other hand, it appears that treating gum disease in people with diabetes can actually help people improve control over their blood sugar levels. “A dentist can be a valuable member of a diabetes health care team, along with a primary care provider and other health professionals,” said Alice G. Boghosian, DDS, and an American Dental Association (ADA) consumer adviser.

The American Diabetes Association estimates that 79 million people, or one in four, may have prediabetes, or blood glucose levels that are above average but not quite high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Additionally, of the nearly 26 million Americans with diabetes, about 7 million are still undiagnosed. With those figures in mind, regular health care checkups should be a priority, including dental visits that may help to identify potential signs of diabetes that appear in the mouth. “In my practice, I’ve seen severely inflamed gums and cases of gum disease that have, together with a patient’s medical history, prompted a discussion about whether there is a potential risk of diabetes,” said Dr. Boghosian. “Oral health and overall health are connected, and as a dentist, it’s my job to flag signs of poor oral health that might also signal other serious health conditions.” People with diabetes should make sure their dentist is aware of the condition, and together, create a personal oral care plan. Also, be sure to

ask your dentist how you can check for signs of gum disease at home in between dental checkups. Regardless of whether you have diabetes, practicing good oral care is essential to a healthy lifestyle. The ADA urges you to make mouth-healthy habits a priority. Be sure to: • Brush for two minutes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste • Floss daily • Eat a healthy diet • Visit your dentist regularly.
