GREETINGS

Activities Abound “Whether you are here as a visitor or to work, I welcome you to the Cayman Islands and invite you to embrace the entire Cayman Islands experience.”

14-17_Department_Letters.indd 14

Welcome to the Cayman Islands. You are here at an exciting time. hilst we enjoy practically perfect weather year round, March and April are months filled with lots of activities and bright colours in the form of a spectacle of tents of all shapes and sizes that line our beaches filled with Easter campers. One of the most religious holidays in the Cayman Islands, Good Friday, 10 April, and Easter Monday, 13 April, are both public holidays. This is a time when families not only attend church, but also devote the long weekend to camping on beaches all over the Cayman Islands. It’s a great time for families and friends to get together and enjoy Cayman’s natural beauty. Children and adults spend the long weekend swimming, fishing, playing games, cooking out and generally having a good time. The true colour and jewels of our three Islands is our people. The Cayman people are kind, giving and passionate. Seek them out. You will have a happier visit and make many wonderful memories. The smallest of our Islands, Little Cayman, is probably the most laid back. There are few motorists on Little Cayman — most people get around by bicycle — and those who you do meet on the roadway are sure to offer a kind wave. Cayman Brac boasts the impressive Bluff that rises to 140 feet out of the sea. There you will find adventure unlike that on Grand Cayman or Little Cayman. If you have access to a computer, go to itsyourstoexplore.com to find out the different activities that can be had on both Sister Islands.

W

Before you leave, make sure you take your taste buds on a culinary adventure, from local fare to fine dining in one of our many top-star restaurants. There is a reason the Cayman Islands is known the world over as the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean. Whether you are here as a visitor or to work, I welcome you to the Cayman Islands and invite you to embrace the entire Cayman Islands experience. You will only then begin to understand why we say we are an island in the Caribbean Sea instead of just another Caribbean Island. I truly believe that your stay with us will be nothing less than magnificent. Please, enjoy your visit and once again, I welcome you to the Cayman Islands. Sincerely,

Cayman Islands Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin, MBE, JP, MLA

GREETINGS

Time to Getaway “At Cayman Airways, we are not only committed to providing tremendous value, but also delivering a unique travel experience, whether you’re venturing to or from any of our three Cayman Islands.”

14-17_Department_Letters.indd 16

Plan exciting adventures to and from the Cayman Islands. s the seasons begin to change from Winter to Spring, the promise of warmer temperatures ahead naturally shifts our focus to finalising plans for our next big Summer vacation, and maybe even a few weekend getaways throughout the year. As Cayman Airways offers more nonstop flights to and from the Cayman Islands than any other airline, I can proudly say that our airline makes vacation planning the most convenient and amongst the most affordable for travellers. For those of us who live in the Cayman Islands, planning Spring and Summer vacations is especially exciting with Cayman Airways’ convenient nonstop flights to USA gateway cities like Denver, New York, Tampa and Miami. Those cities offer an array of vacation experiences to suit any budget, but New York is one of the best choices if you’re looking to splurge a little this year, which you can learn more about in the “NYC Like a Celebrity” feature in this issue of Skies magazine. Those wanting to get in touch with nature should visit one of Cayman Airways’ regional destinations. The lush setting of La Ceiba is home to a plethora of ecotourism adventures and opportunities, while the swaying destinations of Montego Bay and Kingston offer verdant mountains and world-class beaches. If you’re vacationing in the Cayman Islands this year, we’re excited for you!

A

From our world-famous, white-sand beaches and natural offerings to unique accommodations and indulgent spas, Cayman has everything you need for a getaway that’s as adventurous or as laidback as you desire. You can also unplug with a visit to our quiet Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Aside from choosing a destination, one of the most important considerations when planning your vacation is how to get the best value for your money. At Cayman Airways, we are not only committed to providing tremendous value, but also delivering a unique travel experience, whether you’re venturing to or from any of our three Cayman Islands. Only with Cayman Airways will you be greeted and served with true Caymanian hospitality, coupled with a complimentary “Welcome Aboard” Seven Fathoms Rum Punch during your international flight. Wherever your travel plans take you today, we’re delighted to have you flying with us, and we look forward to welcoming you back on board with us again soon. Sincerely,

FOLLOWING FOOTSTEPS

Best Foot Forward Take a few steps to end family violence in the Cayman Islands.

he Cayman Islands Crisis Centre is gearing up for its fifth annual fundraising event, A Walk in Her Shoes, which takes place on March 5 in Camana Bay. The popular event, which is fittingly scheduled for International Women’s Day, will see male participants strut their stuff (or hobble along) in high heels in support of the Crisis Centre. Established in 2003 as Grand Cayman’s first safe shelter for female victims of domestic violence and their children, the nonprofit organisation also provides a 24-hour crisis helpline for women in distress, aftercare support for former shelter clients, and counselling for shelter clients and other members of the public. It also runs Estella’s Place, a walk-in centre open to all victims of abuse.

T

18-21_Following Footsteps_.indd 18

Two volunteers who are passionate about furthering the Crisis Centre’s goal of breaking the cycle of domestic abuse are Michelle Lockwood, director, fundraising chair and event organiser, and Brooke Moore, a board director and chair of the marketing committee. A Helping Hand Michelle Lockwood first got involved with the Crisis Centre in 2015 because she wanted to support the vulnerable people who come to the shelter. “They are afraid to speak out or of the consequences. Cayman is a very small community and the repercussions can be felt very quickly; so I wanted to ensure that our clients have the best possible experience, and, in particular, an empowering one,” she says. Lockwood had a previous experience of unwanted

attention and felt powerless both in the moment as well as during the aftermath, as she didn’t want to report the incident to the police. “Having the shelter means that you are supported throughout every part of this journey, whether you’re ready to leave, have a question or figure out new solutions that you may not have considered. The team is there throughout every moment to support you,” says Lockwood, adding that domestic abuse can take the form of physical, emotional and even financial abuse. “Since I’ve been involved in this cause, I have had many people speak to me about abuses that they feel within their families, whether it be a husband-andwife relationship or parent-and-child relationship; and the abuse can go either way. I always encourage them to speak

to one of our counsellors, either by calling the shelter or by visiting Estella’s Place. Our services are much more than just a shelter, and the work of the team can be the start to rebuilding lives,” she says. The first time Brooke Moore was introduced to the Crisis Centre was in 2012 at an art exhibition fundraiser, where a shelter client told a story of how the Crisis Centre had helped her escape the cycle of abuse. “I was brought to tears hearing this victim speak about what she had been through, and that story has always stayed with me. I also have a family member who has been a victim of domestic violence. Although she is the direct victim, her children are [victims] as well. Hearing the stories of hiding in the closet to

Domestic violence

is a very serious issue, and this is one way in which we have been able to have

fun for this cause.

keep safe and having to witness this is absolutely heartbreaking, as children do not forget this and it can have long-lasting effects,” she says. A Walk in Her Shoes The event encourages participating men to collect donations from friends, family and colleagues in support of them donning a pair of high heels in front of crowds of people. “This year we will be doing ‘heats,’ so the more money the participant raises means they’ll have a later start time and, therefore, fewer laps to walk,” says Lockwood. Many of the participants “go all out” for the event and come wearing dresses, panty hose and makeup. “It is very entertaining to see them transform and really fully dedicate to showing support for our shelter,” says Moore. “There will inevitably be a stumble, but they are all there together — sometimes heavily leaning on each other — but most importantly with a smile… It is so amazing to see men understand, even for a moment, what women go through.” This year’s fundraising goal is to exceed CI$50,000, which will go towards ongoing operating costs at the shelter, with another goal of creating a purpose-built shelter within the next five years. With every event, the Crisis Centre is closer to achieving this goal. “Domestic violence is a very serious issue, and this is one way in which we have been able to have fun for this cause. Men also need to play a part in lifting up all women, and, hopefully, with this short experience walking in heels, they will make a small step,” expands Lockwood. Moore adds: “Events such as A Walk in Her Shoes helps raise awareness of what the Crisis Centre does and helps break down that stigma. A lot of people suffer in silence, and as long as we are getting the message out, we hope that people listen, as domestic violence can affect anyone… Our mission is to end the cycle of domestic violence and close our doors forever so that our services are no longer needed.”

Steeped in Tradition Sip in honour of Cayman’s British heritage. 22

A

s a British overseas territory, Cayman celebrates its

relationship with England in many

ways. The Queen’s image is on the

local currency, and the Union Jack is

on the upper left corner of the Islands’ flag. Arguably, however, one of the most enjoyable ways to pay tribute

to Cayman’s colonial roots is to treat yourself to afternoon tea. Proper Custom Many equate tea with Britain’s history;

however, the tradition of afternoon tea was established not all that long ago.

Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, is credited with creating the tradition

in 1840. During the 19th century, most

British aristocratic families would eat two meals a day: one midmorning and the

other late in the evening. This led them with pastries, scones and sandwiches was requested to hold them over until dinner.

Note that afternoon tea is not the same

as high tea. High tea was the term used to describe the last meal of the day for

British working-class families. Today many call this dinner or supper. A Royal Affair Those who want to feel like royalty are

Mad for Tea For a traditional experience rounded out with modern updates, look no further than the Mad Tea Party,

taking place every Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Grand Cayman

Mad Hatter Tea Party from Alice in

Wonderland, it is not your average cup of tea!”

The Marriott’s tea features creative

tea blends designed by the experts at 24

Teatime in Cayman. “Our aim is to

surprise you with a decadent display of cool cakes and ever-changing

‘Drink Me’ potions in addition to the high tea classics,” continues Parry. The food offerings change weekly but include a combination of tea

sandwiches, scones and homemade

cakes. To make a reservation, book

Li g h t t h e Ni g h t Set the mood at your next dinner party with a Baccarat My Fire Candleholder. The clean lines in the base and arm give it a modern feel, whilst the sconce emphasised in red adds character. Baccarat is known for its brilliant and exquisite pieces to adorn the home, and this candleholder is no exception.

To as t t h e H o s t The Waterford Elegant Flute will leave guests speechless with its understated beauty. Made by talented artisans and from the finest crystal, the flute’s simplicity puts it right on trend, as plain stemware is all the rage in 2020.

Now Serving As the buyer for china and crystal at Kirk Freeport for over 30 years, Mary Bodden has built a career around luxury products. Bodden was first introduced to china and crystal when she started working in retail at Kirk Freeport and was immediately drawn to the pieces. “I appreciated the beauty and value of what are really works of art,” she enthuses.

China and crystal are two notably different products. “China is largely associated with dinnerware, such as plates, along with figurines, giftware and decoration,” Bodden explains. “Crystal, on the other hand, is known for stemware, including a wide assortment of drinkware.” Additionally, there are crystal figurines, decorations, lightware and jewellery. The china and crystal industries are large and can leave prospective buyers feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to purchase. Thankfully, Bodden’s seasoned eye means that only the best pieces from the best brands are stocked at Kirk Freeport. “Kirk Freeport’s main china and crystal stores are the Kirk Gallery and Lalique Boutique, located at Bay Shore Mall in George Town.” She adds that The Strand location has a notable selection, too. After watching the market for many years, Bodden notes that plain stemware is becoming very popular at the moment. She also shares that functional items such as vases, centrepieces and bowls are proving to be popular gifts. Another trend Bodden says to be aware of is that of coloured crystal. “Blue is the colour for this year.”

Mo o d f o r F o o d Dinner guests will swoon at Wedgwood’s Arris dishware. The simple geometric pattern is equal parts classic, modern and timeless. Guests wonder if it is new or a well-preserved family heirloom. Its neutral colours of gold and white will complement all dining rooms and any meal served on it.

esigning a home today can be a balancing act of many spinning parts. Deciding on materials, paint colours and the creation of meaningful spaces and aesthetics can boggle the mind. From the 17th through early 20th centuries, the Islands’ traditional architecture consisted of four main style categories: the wattle-and-daub house, the timber house, the bungalow and the two-storey manor house. A key factor in design was that of practicality and budget. One would build a house with the money they had in hand and then extend as more funds became available. The first homes were built using what was available locally. They would have mahogany frames supported by ironwood posts; walls made of wattle, which is woven strips usually cut from cabbage trees, and daub, a lime-based plaster made by burning coral rocks with wood in an outdoor kiln; and thatch roofs. The doors and windows were simply openings with wooden shutters that could be propped open.

D

36-37_Flashback.indd 36

In designing and building today’s modernday homes, “open-concept” interiors with minimalistic furnishings are popular. However, this was not a matter of choice in the olden days; it was a necessity. The houses were mainly for sleeping — usually on plantain trash mattresses made of dried leaves of the plantain tree — whilst most of the day’s work/chores would take place outside. The average new home from the mid-19th century would be the single-storey timber house or bungalow. The timber house would be a rectangular shape of about 600 square feet, with a fretwork porch that ran along the front and occasionally wrapped the sides. The bungalow would be around 1,200 square feet and have a wider gabled front porch supported by large columns. The kitchen and bathing facilities were typically in adjacent buildings, but later designs enclosed them under the same roof of the house. Examples of these homes can still be found dotted around all three Islands. We encourage you to keep your eyes open for these architectural treasures as you journey through Cayman’s neighbourhoods.

Housing options throughout the Cayman Islands seem to be growing in leaps and bounds. Alvin Sluchinski, real estate advisor with Engel & Völkers Cayman Islands, explains why Cayman is surging forward. “The ongoing boom in Cayman real estate has spawned many new preconstruction projects to suit varying lifestyles, build qualities, floor plans, price points and in various Island locations,” he advises. With the expansion of the hotel and financial services sectors, there is an urgent need for more professionals to service these industries. “We are seeing a demand for more housing on all levels; and, of course, there is a strong interest in prime

waterfront properties by investors and holiday makers,” he continues. Pointing to buying at the preconstruction stage, Sluchinski believes this is a fantastic opportunity for all buyers because new builds offer entrylevel prices (almost guaranteed equity upsides) and new construction brings the latest technologies and energyefficient benefits and trouble-free home ownership, plus the joy of furnishing and personalising these homes. “The new Dolphin Point Club is one of the best examples of a great buy on the waterfront at Northwest Point,” he says. “These luxury condos offer a wide array of sizes and floor plans in one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom layouts coddled in a luxury five-storey

Kim Lund, owner/broker with RE/MAX Cayman Islands, says that the Grand Hyatt development is a very compelling investment. “The Grand Hyatt Residences

are pre-selling at an average of only US$933 per square foot for a five-star internationally branded Seven Mile Beach resort,” he explains. He compares this cost to recent sales at a random summary of other popular Seven Mile Beach condominium developments, with Villas of the Galleon (built around 1980) costing US$1,509 sales price per square foot; Pinnacle (built around 2000) at US$1,323 sales price per square foot, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman (built around 2005) at US$1,662 sales price per

square foot and WaterColours (built around 2014) at US$1,805 sales price per square foot. (Current market sales are taken from the Cayman Islands Real Estate Brokers Association’s MLS system over the last year.) “The difference in comparable prices represents a huge current upside in value of around 40 to 100 percent for the Grand Hyatt Residences,” Lund states. “If you bought the least expensive studio suite at US$521,375, the increase in value over Seven Mile Beach sales prices would be approximately US$200,000 to US$500,000 at today’s prices.” Lund says this upside is real and prevalent across all of the residences currently for sale at the Grand Hyatt and presents an unprecedented opportunity for future capital appreciation, as the Grand Hyatt progresses through construction. “Why not invest into real estate with a great profit already baked in?” he asks.

Locally owned Heritage Holdings Development is excited to introduce two unique developments to the shores of Cayman. Nestled between Lalique Point in Crystal Harbour and the North South Golf Club, Diamond’s Edge stands on one of the last great vantage points in Grand Cayman. “This new development offers unobstructed ocean views from every estate lot on which you can build your dream home,” Larissa Waters, sales and development with Heritage Holdings Development, confirms. “Each have highend hardwood boat docks built in, along with a natural stone seawall surrounding the oceanfront canals. This is a limited offer when investing in Cayman, having your own private dock in your own backyard.” A 24-hour manned security entrance gate, customised street lights, manicured spaces, extensive landscaping, on-site maintenance, private refuse collection and underground utilities all work in harmony to ensure Diamond’s Edge is finished to the highest standards. Nautica Marina Residences is another new project, with eight private resident buildings in combinations of two, three

he Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) reopened last Fall after a $450 million renovation adding an additional 47,000 square feet to the iconic institution. “The real value of this expansion is not more space but space that allows us to rethink the experience of art in the museum,” says Museum Director Glenn D. Lowry. With a collection that includes over 200,000 works by modern masters like Van Gogh, Cézanne, Pollock, Rothko and O’Keeffe, the reimagined gallery space deepens the museum’s engagement with underappreciated artists, including women and international artists. From March 1 to July 11, the museum will exhibit the first retrospective of groundbreaking sculptor Donald Judd in 30 years. hilst Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw might have lived on the Upper East Side, long-time New Yorker Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick are denizens of the West Village. Starting March 13, the pair makes their way to Broadway’s Hudson Theatre to star in the first-ever revival of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, which originally premiered in 1968, for a limited engagement through July 12. Set at the iconic Central Park South hotel, the comedy in three acts explores three different couples — each played by Parker and Broderick — who have checked into Suite 719. “It’s a great play about love and marriage, but it’s not necessarily a rosy picture of it and that’s what makes it so great,” says director John Benjamin Hickey.

The production also marks the first time Parker and Broderick share the stage in 20 years. “There’s nothing better than being on a stage in New York City,” says Parker.

Camana Bay’s quaint waterfront restaurant, Agua, offers a twist on the traditional buffet brunch with its FamilyStyle Sunday Lunch. Italians would call it pranzo della nonna (translation: grandmother’s lunch), and that is exactly the kind of spirit it is meant to evoke. Whilst Agua is rooted in Italian cuisine, it also takes inspiration from Peru, serving up Peruvian ceviches, anticuchos and seafood. With an all-you-can-eat menu that changes weekly, you can expect locally caught fresh seafood served with Peruvian flare and organic pastas prepared with Italian tradition and passion. Whether you dine in the bright and airy restaurant or al fresco on the breezy waterfront patio, course after course of delicious food comes your way, as well as optional bottles of prosecco and wine. Once the dishes are taken away, another course is served, so you never have to leave your table (and you can eat as many courses as your belly can handle!) — giving new meaning to a “lazy Sunday afternoon.” Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

REAL ESTATE

Island Architecture Modern architects are redefining Cayman living and sustainability. BY STEPHANIE PEACOCK

s Cayman matures into a Caribbean island of distinction for its residents and visitors, two individuals have significantly helped to shape the landscape of this unique location: architects Brian Macdonald, managing partner of Design Cayman Architects, and John Doak of John Doak Architecture (JDA). Doak doesn’t think he has a certain style necessarily. “However, like chefs, I combine

A

the ingredients of budget, client aspirations, accommodations, the assets and constraints of the site to creatively concoct a unique place that is totally tropical and spiced with design picante!” JDA buildings respect the terroir, or locale, by blending context, siting, budget, scheduling and construction feasibility. The buildings Doak creates are at home in the tropics whether ultramodern, transitional or traditionally styled. “More particularly, our

Doak has been an architect since 1979. He says building in the tropics and on remote islands necessitates a sustainable approach, so it’s not a recent trend but rather it’s the way he’s been creating for over 40 years. See information on JDA.

REAL ESTATE

Design Cayman Limited is a studio of creative and imaginative designers committed to designing buildings, spaces and places that are as striking and innovative as they are socially, economically and environmentally responsible. Brian Macdonald believes to be successful, they must remain that way. “Design solutions must be founded on innovation and creativity and balanced by common sense and experience,” he advises, adding that he sees each project as an individual

challenge and exciting opportunity to develop the most efficient design response. “The design process starts with listening to the clients and developing a creative and logical response to their needs and aspirations for a particular project. Designing for people is fundamental to this process,” he continues. Sustainability is ingrained into everything they do. “We believe that incorporating proven sustainable design methods is practical, requires less maintenance than traditional design practices and saves money.”

nglers around the Gulf of the Caribbean eagerly await the first day of the Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament [CIIFT]. Now in its 23rd year — and with hundreds of thousands of dollars and prizes to be won — it is one of the region’s most anticipated fishing events. Competitors test their skills over four days to lure and hook yellowfin tuna, dolphin (also known as mahi-mahi), wahoo and billfish with hopes that their catch is record setting. There are several tournaments leading up to the CIIFT that build excitement. These include The BK Big Fish 2020 March 6-8, Cayman Swordfish Challenge March 27-28, and Kirk Slam April 18-19. Joshua Ebanks, vice president of the Cayman Angling Association, says, “The CIIFT has been promoting sportfishing for over

PRO TIPS

Stephen Ebanks, owner of Reel Vibes Charters, has been fishing competitivity since age 11 and humbly shares advice. “Some of the common areas where tournament competitors fish are 12 Mile Bank and East End Bank. It all depends on where the fish have been hanging out before the tournament starts.” Ebanks coaches those new to the sport that “some days are fishing days, and some days are catching days. Just keep at it.” Ebanks warmly invites all who would like to get their reels wet to book a trip on Reel Vibes Charters. They cast lines 2 to 12 miles offshore, where they commonly catch mahi-mahi, tuna and wahoo, a perfect warm-up for the CIIFT.

ENTERING THE TOURNAMENT

There are two ways to enter CIIFT. The first is to enter your boat with up to four anglers. Note that there is a registration fee. The second option, if you do not own your own boat, is to join a crew. Joshua Ebanks suggests that some charter companies are also available for hire during tournaments. Good luck anglers, and see you at the weigh-in!
