How would you describe the range of inventory and brands at the boutique? In today’s world, you can go online and find any brand you want. What sets us apart is that we purchase things with a story. For instance, we’ll buy a bikini from one brand, then a cover-up from another brand that goes along with it. It’s styled and easy to sort through. You’ll find swim shorts for a man, and then coordinating ones for his kids. Sure, we have things like basic white T-shirts, but it’s not just about basics. Not only will you find things here like sweat suits, you will find the best sweat suits ever here. What is the shopping experience like at Acqualina’s Spa Boutique? Some of my fondest childhood memories of traveling are of shopping in the hotel boutique. It’s part of the travel experience to get that holiday souvenir or great holiday look. In our case, we’re located right by the spa, so it’s tranquil and not intimidating. It’s not your typical department store experience. The boutique is merchandized so that if you don’t want to ask for help, you can work it out yourself. There are lots of options, and everything is coordinated — not sorted by designer or just divided with bikinis in one section, pants in another… it’s all arranged so that it’s sorted together for looks. If you do want to ask for help, we aren’t pushy, and we’re not going to put you in a look that isn’t f lattering just because it’s on trend or we have it in stock. We also have personal shopping services where we can bring the store to your room. What are some of the more unique offerings? The store is small, and the stock moves frequently. We don’t buy a lot of quantity of the same thing, because the store is for our residents and guests and we won’t want everyone walking around in the same thing. We like to think we speak to a range of clients and needs. For instance, if you’re in town and headed to a friend’s house for a dinner party, we might suggest a hostess gift of a Fornasetti candle. If you’re here on a family trip, we have a lot of looks that coordinate. It’s not overly matchy, but everyone will end up looking like they go together. Often, people are so pleased that they want to take a family portrait, so we’ll get them a photographer to do a shoot. We’ll also put together gift baskets or beach bags filled with snorkels, goggles and toys. It goes beyond just bikinis and cover-ups here.

A close personal friend of the Trumps, Loren was enlisted as part of the development team that made sure Acqualina possessed the look and feel of Italy’s famous relaxed-yet-chic Italian Riviera. “She felt that the authenticity that we were looking to create would have a huge impact… she would help us with the whole atmosphere, the Mediterranean sort of feeling,” explains Jules Trump. A former pageant girl, this stunning star is one of the last surviving actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She began her career at the young age of 16 and held small roles for about six years until she was discovered by Paramount and given a contract for five movies — thus launching her international movie career. Hailing from humble beginnings, Loren’s life is a story of rags to riches. As the child of unmarried parents, Loren was raised by her single mother and grandmother and only met her father a handful of times in her life. Despite the difficult odds, a 36

very attractive young Loren entered into Italian beauty pageants, winning small titles here and there, including “Miss Elegance 1950” and “Miss Cinema” at the 1950 Miss Italia beauty pageant. She was then encouraged to take acting lessons, which obviously paid off. Legendary Italian director Vittorio De Sica tapped the up-and-coming actress for a role in his film Two Women (1960), a career-defining film for Loren in which she garnered an Oscar for best actress and became the first actress to win an Academy Award for a performance in a foreign film.

Her celebrated career skyrocketed from there, and the international accolades and awards continued to f lood in, including a Grammy Award, five Golden Globes, awards from both the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, and so many others.

Her husband, Italian producer Carlo Ponti, also played an integral part in the actress’ success. He was the one who encouraged Loren (born Sofia Villani Scicolone) to change her name after meeting the starlet during her pageant days. Sophia Loren, the stage name they conjured up, was inspired by Swedish actress Märta Torén. The Italian screen goddess often worked opposite her handsome Italian stallion counterpart, Marcello Mastroianni, who she has said was her favorite

actor to work with. In her autobiography, Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: My Life (2014), Loren admits to almost falling for handsome American actor Cary Grant. Grant fell in love with the spicy Italian bombshell when she played the role of “Juana” opposite him in the movie The Pride and Passion (1957). It’s said that while the star swirled around and stomped her feet dancing the sultry f lamenco on set, Grant was awestruck, some say even obsessed. 38

A married (and much older) Grant pursued the bombshell, eventually leading to a torrid love affair. Loren was on the verge of marrying Ponti and Grant was determined to steal her away, a failed attempt, much to Grant’s dismay. Rumors of an affair and major sexual tension continued when Loren replaced Grant’s wife (at the time) Betsey Drake in the movie Houseboat (1959). The film star was no stranger to compromising and oftentimes utterly difficult predicaments, including begging for food from

Sir Noël Peirce Coward — an English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit and flamboyance — once said that Loren should have been “sculpted in chocolate truffles so the world could devour her.”


American soldiers and getting hit with scrap metal during World War II, and, later in life, being groped by Marlon Brando on set. Loren’s dramatic personal life paled in comparison to the many diverse roles she played. From a funny rich girl posing as a housemaid to a woman trying to protect her daughter from the horrors of war, to a naive country girl-turned-call-girl, from the start Loren proved that she could take on any genre. Her compelling roles included parts in memorable movies like It Started in Naples (1960), Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963), Marriage Italian Style (1964), The Voyage (1974), and A Special Day (1977). In the 1990s, Loren played a geriatric love interest in Grumpier Old Men (1995) and a fading icon in Prêt-à-Porter (1994). In 2009, Loren appeared in the musical Nine alongside Daniel Day-Lewis. She is set to return to the silver screen after a decade in The Life Ahead , a film directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti. Now, at 84 years young, the mother, grandmother, author, cruise ship godmother and singer still projects grace, glamour and major sex appeal and is enjoying her semi-retirement in Geneva, Switzerland.

INSTAGRAM READY Designed with an eye-popping interior, Acqualina invited families to take lots of silly selfies in the FUN Room, a unique pop-up event held last year in a space where guests could select a cool immersive experience to engage in, like surfing a big wave or f loating with a cluster of bright balloons. Walls were decorated with splashes of bold colors and bubbles, creating a room that was ideal for capturing families’ favorite moments. From where do you originally hail? Johannesburg, South Africa Where did you learn so much about wine? In Johannesburg I had the distinct privilege of working with an incredible wine cellar and list ranging from local favorites such as Klein Constantia Sauvignon Blanc at $20 a bottle to Romanée-Conti at $15,000 a bottle. I worked with four sommeliers, two of whom were Advanced Court of Masters Sommeliers; it was a “wine culture” F&B operation, and I immediately fell in love with the romance between the food and wine. When and where do the Acqualina wine tastings take place? On Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. in the AQ Bar. How did you select the wine regions you present in the new wine journey? I select one Old World classic (French) expression of the grape variety, one local (California), as well as one New World (New Zealand, South Arica, Australia, Argentina, etc.) wine. What grape varieties are you showcasing each month? The grape varieties include chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and both red and white blends.

How important is the hors d’oeuvre pairing with each wine you’re serving? The main reason for the hors d’oeuvres is to highlight how the different wines of the same grape variety perform with different bases of saline, cream/dairy and sugar for individual palates. What wine glass do you recommend for each variety? Generally, you should have four prominent glasses to enjoy your wine: Champagne, all-purpose white wine, Burgundy and all-purpose red wine glasses. If you occasionally enjoy a port or dessert wine, special wine glasses are needed. A decanter is also a must to enjoy certain grape varieties. Is choosing a proper glass important? The type of glass is very important. The larger or smaller the opening will allow for different aromas and different areas where the wine first comes into contact with the tongue. The more areas that are in contact with oxygen, the more the wine changes and releases different aromas.


What role does your security team play at the property? My security team is responsible for guarding and securing entry and access points as well as monitoring CCTV cameras around the property and checking-in guests and contractors. What is your proudest moment at The Mansions to date? When my AM Supervisor won employee of the year at the holiday party. She’s an extension of me and my training, so I was definitely proud! What is the question you receive most often from residents? “Who’s that?” Our residents know other Mansions residents, so when they see someone they don’t know they inquire about the individual. We screen all guests on Mansions property and give them guest/visitor wristbands, so I always have an answer for them.

What attracted you to work at The Mansions at Acqualina? I joined for a new challenge, and because I knew my experience and expertise could add to an already great luxury brand and team.

If you weren’t working in security, what would you be doing? I’d be in the FBI or Secret Service.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy two things the most: the residents and our team. We work together but it is more like family than coworkers. I also enjoy serving and getting to know our residents and their families. Knowing they’re entrusting you with their safety and security is very fulfilling.

Families and kids of all ages witnessed exclusive hatchling releases during Miami’s sea turtle season. “It’s a really good opportunity for [Acqualina] residents and guests to learn about turtles and be more aware of our conservation efforts and what’s happening on the beach, and then hopefully spread their knowledge to other people as well,” explains Colette Biondi, assistant manager for the Sea Turtle Conservation Program. Attendees — which included Acqualina’s own CEO and Partner Deborah Yager-Fleming and General Manager Christof Pignet — met in the resort lobby for pictures and received a boxed lunch, hats and backpacks before departing for Haulover Beach Park. Representatives from the program gave an engaging presentation about the lives of sea turtles, the organization’s work and released the tiny turtles into the sea after 9 pm.

Does Miami have a strong presence in the global real estate market? Miami has the presence of a large international city, albeit small by population standards, having a total population of just under 3 million. Its world presence was recently validated by the Knight Frank Wealth Report, which ranked Miami as the 5th fastest growing real estate market in the world and #1 in the U.S. Do you foresee any potential downturns in the local market? The downturn in the local real estate market is nearing its end, caused mostly by the high U.S. dollar. This factor alone has caused a downturn since 2016, resulting in a substantial slowdown of South American buying activity. Despite the extraordinary desire for most Latin families to own property in Miami, the exchange rates were not favorable. Thankfully, we are nearing the end of the slowdown. What advice would you give someone who is interested in buying? Miami is a condo buyer’s market. There remains a slight overhang of condo inventory from this current building cycle, which began in 2012. However, the population gains in Miami is absorbing this inventory at a steady pace, leaving this current buyer’s market available for one more year, when prices are expected to rise substantially due to declining supply and lower mortgage rates, resulting in a seller’s market. What do you tell your clients who may be hesitant to invest in real estate now? Hesitancy to buy is usually a result of bad information about the state of the market. Take the time to become informed on current data. The closer you look at Miami, the more likely it is you will lose your hesitation. There is nothing new coming on the market. 78
