1 The Shrine of Saint Alban The Shrine of Saint Alban is a site of national pilgrimage. People have been coming here for over 1700 years to honour Alban. It is used as a place of prayer and stillness by visitors every day.
2 The Longest Nave in England At 85 metres, St Albans Cathedral has the longest nave in England. You can enjoy exploring the Norman and Early English architecture, as well as viewing the rare monastic rood screen.
3 Choral Evensong
Time your visit to enjoy the beautiful singing of the Cathedral Choirs at Evensong, part of the bedrock of Cathedral worship. Weekdays 17.00. Saturday 16.00. Sunday 18.30. Please note: outside of choir terms, there may be a visiting choir or Evening Prayer is a short said service.
4 Stunning Medieval Wall Paintings The Cathedral has one of the most extensive series of medieval wall paintings surviving today. These beautiful paintings range in date from the late 12th century to the 16th century.
5 Magnificent Architecture The Cathedral’s amazing mixture of architectural styles bears witness to the many centuries of its life. Roman bricks from Verulamium can be seen in the fabric of the building – skilfully recycled by the Normans.

This spectacular tour takes you all the way to the top of the Norman Bell Tower. On your way to the top, you visit the north transept gallery, the ringing chamber and the bell chamber, before your final climb out onto the roof of the tower with extensive views in all directions. Tickets are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Tours last approximately one hour.

Abbey by Night Date: Wednesday 10th October Thursday 29th November Time: Tours at 20.00 & 20.30 Price: £10, includes drinks reception. See St Albans Cathedral in a whole new light! This unique, atmospheric tour gives you the rare chance to explore the Cathedral by candlelight. As darkness descends, you are guided around the candlelit venue by monks and historical characters who bring to life the building’s remarkable history and highlights. Drinks reception 15 minutes before the tour time.

World AIDS Day Evensong Date: Saturday 1st December Time: 16.00 This special Evensong provides an opportunity for reflection and remembrance. World AIDS Day is held on 1st December each year and is a time for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

A very popular and lively service lasting no more than an hour, and intended mainly for children and young families. Children visit the crib in the Cathedral and join in singing carols.
Midnight Mass Time: 23.30 The first celebration of Christmas, with carols and the glorious singing of the Cathedral Choir. The doors of the Cathedral will be open from 22.50.
Christmas Day Eucharist with Carols Time: 8.00 Parish Eucharist for Christmas Day* Time: 9.30 A Christmas service for all ages with crèche and children's activities. Sung by the Abbey Girls Choir and the men of the Cathedral Choir.
Matins for Christmas Day Time: 11.15 A service sung by the Cathedral Choir.
Eucharist Time: 12.30 A quiet service without music following Matins. Following the 12.30 service the Cathedral will be closed for the rest of Christmas Day, but is otherwise open daily throughout the Christmas period.

Budding artists, young and old, are invited to explore the Cathedral and create their very own masterpieces inspired by the theme of this year’s Big Draw – Taking a Line for a Walk. Teams of helpers will be on hand with suggestions, photographs, artefacts and materials to develop the theme. Suitable for all ages. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
