Hawk's Well Theatre - Brochure | Sept - Dec 2024

Page 1

Welcome

Dear Patrons,

For 42 years, our theatre has celebrated artistic vision and creativity in all its forms.

Whether it’s championing local talent, like Mikel Murfi, Cathy Jordan, James Nelson, Muireann Bradley and Altan; creating in-house productions of The Whacky Witch and The Snowman; giving space to the biggest and brightest artists like Mary Coughlan, David O’Doherty and Luka Bloom; coordinating interactive and vibrant events such as Culture Night for the Sligo region; or allowing our community superstars to shine on stage, there’s something for everyone to celebrate this season at Hawk’s Well.

It’s also back to school season. (Kids: Boo! Parents: Yay!) We invite every member of our community to come to the theatre and learn something new. Check out our Take Part section and our upcoming workshops for ideas on how to expand your skills.

We’re proud to be one of the busiest theatres in the country, with big, bold ambitions that reach far beyond our four walls. The brochure that you hold in your hands represents only a microcosm of our work over the last four decades.

Because at the heart of it all, we truly believe in the power of the arts to transform lives.

And that’s something worth celebrating.

See you at the theatre,

This is a story full of hope, where laughter and tears join hands and race us through fifty years of a life, not much different to our own. This is Seamus O’Rourke doing what he does best, storytelling.

Charmaine T. Matonsi

I am deeply grateful for the funding from Hawk’s Well for Time at the Well and to the Cairde Sligo Arts Festival for showcasing Through Our Eyes at Unveiled. Wasekera and I were moved by the audience’s response and are excited to work with more migrant women in the future.

I am nearing completion of first full draft of a piece called Nothing But An Old Weed after some residential writing time, with thanks to the Time at the Well. Then onto some scheduled days in Autumn for moving and developing the script in a rehearsal space. I am hoping to present a sharing of the piece towards the end of the year.

JoeMeehan

A Tribute...

Like many others of his generation, the name of Joe Meehan is synonymous with drama and the theatre in Sligo.

A Sligo man through and through, many people will remember Joe from his shop at Market Cross. Indeed, people have remarked that Joe would have been equally happy to talk to a customer about drama and the theatre as he would be to sell them a garment.

Joe was part of the Sligo Drama Circle group which pioneered the Theatre For Sligo project throughout the 1970s, culminating in the opening of the Hawk’s Well Theatre in 1982 - a cherished dream for many in Sligo Drama Circle at the time.

Joe took an active role in the fledgling theatre and was a member of its first Board of Directors, serving for many years. Joe was also instrumental, along with Mary McDonagh, in the formation of Sligo Fun Company. From its first production of The Witness in 1983, Sligo Fun Company has continued to thrive and become synonymous with the Hawk’s Well Theatre.

Joe would hold on to memorabilia related to Sligo Drama Circle and the theatre. This instigated the development of an archive by Sligo Drama Circle. This archive will be exhibited in honour of Joe during the run of Sligo Drama Circle’s 2024 autumn production: The Importance of being Earnest.

Joe passed away in April of this year, but he has left a tremendous dramatic and theatrical legacy to the people of Sligo. This commemorative photographic exhibition pays tribute to Joe and the great contribution that he has made both to Sligo Drama Circle and to Hawk’s Well Theatre.

Renovation of Hawk’s Well Theatre

Phase 1 Complete

We’re thrilled to let you know that Phase One of our renovation project is now complete, thanks to the incredible support of our community and renovation patrons.

Phase One represents a huge step forward in ensuring Hawk’s Well can continue its legacy as the region’s premier cultural lighthouse. We’re determined to keep momentum going into the next phase, enhancing space with regards to comfort, safety and accessibility, and making sure that your experience at the theatre is an unforgettable one.

To date, we have seen an investment of €447,000, covering a diverse scope of upgrades and enhancements:

• We installed new interior carpets at a cost of €6,000, making our space look fresh and modern.

• We upgraded our heating system for €3,000, making sure our patrons and staff are toasty even during colder months.

• New office flooring was put down for €2,000, making our workspace more attractive for staff.

• We have purchased a new hearing loop system for €4,000, improving accessibility for those living with hearing impairments.

• We replaced our show-stopping theatre curtains at a cost of €4,000, increasing the functionality of our stage (and they also look pretty).

• We installed LED stage lighting for €8,000, improving lighting quality whilst also helping the environment. Tick, tick!

• The backstage area was refurbished for €11,000, making our backstage crew and artists very happy and comfortable.

• We gave the entire theatre a new lick of interior paint for €6,000, adding a bit of colour and brightness to our spaces

• We added new floor lights for €7,000, giving everyone a light in the dark to find their seats or nearest exits.

• New exit doors were installed for €4,000, making sure we keep you all safe as possible while enjoying our performances.

• We upgraded to an XE20 lighting desk for €11,000, giving us top-of-the-range lighting control for our biggest performances.

• The auditorium flooring was replaced for €15,000, making sure our audience enjoys their experience from the bottom up!

• We put in low emission LED lights for €10,000, once again putting our sustainability goals front and centre.

• A new sound desk was purchased for €11,000, to help our shows rise above the noise.

• We installed a hi-res projector for €11,000, meaning we can be even more innovative in terms of visual arts.

• The roof was newly repaired at a cost of €114,000 - a very important piece of work in our rainy corner of Ireland!

• We upgraded our auditorium seating for €95,000, making you feel even more comfortable and at home in our theatre.

We hope you enjoy these significant improvements to Hawk’s Well Theatre, which have all been carried out with you - our loyal patrons, artists and supporters - as the priority. Our original timing for Phase Two has been delayed by COVID and recent significant building cost inflation. We are now actively in the process of revising our plans to ensure we meet our objectives of additional space, building upgrade and improved access and we can’t wait to get cracking on making it happen.

Once again, thank you so much to everyone who has donated over the last few years and we really appreciate your continued support.

We hope that our upgrades make you feel even more welcome at your local theatre. The Team at Hawk’s Well acknowledge the contribution made by Jane Parsons and Marie O’Byrne in delivering this Phase

Introducing Hawk’s Well Pathways A LIGHT IN THE DARK FOR LOCAL ARTISTS

Opportunities for artists to be paid to create, develop and perform their work are often hard to come by; the effect is even more pronounced for artists with differing needs, or from minority or disadvantaged groups. This leads to a lack of diverse voices, limited artistic perspectives and stifled creativity.

With Hawk’s Well Pathways, we’re providing artists the opportunity to practice and hone their craft, regardless of their career stage or background. With the unique backing of Hawk’s Well Theatre, new artists can gain the confidence, skills and experience necessary to create something extraordinary.

Our current Time at the Well award provides three bursaries to performing artists of all disciplines, at all stages in their career - and the results have been incredible.

Our Cultural Companions programme provides increased opportunities for older people to engage with Sligo’s vibrant cultural and arts scene.

Community Choir and Community Orchestra have brought people across the country together, encouraged them to bring their instruments and take part in a celebration of music and art leading to a central showcase on our stage to a full house.

Our Shine pilot programme, which offers drama and music workshops to people with intellectual disabilities, is now entering its third year and has been a great success with 11 participants taking part in weekly workshops at the theatre.

The best way to support Hawk’s Well Theatre Pathways, as well as our wider work, is to become a Friend. Projects like Time at the Well, Shine, Community Choir, Community Orchestra and Cultural Companions have already made a huge impact. The increased funding could allow us to manage several groups and productions simultaneously, transforming the lives of potentially hundreds.

Become a Hawk’s Well Theatre Friend today and help fund our life-changing Pathways projects.
