I don’t know how this happens, but out of the hundreds of entries we get in our fab cash competition – we always seem to pick a lovely winner! The True Cost of a Kitchen Designing your kitchen Using an architect or interior designer is the most expensive option. Check whether they price per hour or for the job, and what’s included – from simple outline sketches, to detailed drawings, assistance with planning applications, specifying suppliers, appointing contractors and supervising the entire process. At the other end of the scale, you could design it yourself for free, as well as source all components such as units, worktops and appliances. Many people go for the middle option of using their kitchen supplier’s design and installation service. If you’re asked to take your own measurements, be careful: even in a new-build, walls are not always true and the surfaces flat. Take at least three measurements at floor, work-surface and wall unit height, and work to the smallest width. Alternatively, if you are using a midrange or luxury kitchen supplier, you may be asked to pay a few hundred pounds for them to measure up and produce a set of accurate drawings. Comparing prices What’s included when you buy a kitchen? It varies widely, from a basic delivery of flat-packed cupboards to an all-encompassing service. When comparing prices, ensure that you know exactly what you’re buying – a cheap option can cost considerably more if you end up paying for extra work. Ask the right questions. Will they dispose of existing fittings? Prepare plumbing and electrical work? Carry out associated building work? Fit floor and wall finishes? What about final decorating, electrical work and other carpentry such as shelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, appliances and extras such as plate racks? Is there a guarantee and after-sales service?

Homes & Gardens

Checking for quality The main difference between buying an off-the-shelf kitchen from one of the budget suppliers and a pricier kitchen from a mid-price or luxury supplier is that the former will give you machine-made units that come off a factory line, whereas the latter offer hand-built cupboards by cabinet-makers. Machine-made units are not necessarily poor quality, though they will have “plant-on” doors that sit in front of the frame, rather than “in-frame” doors, which are individually made to fit perfectly. Doors Solid-wood doors with traditional mortise and tenon joints are often considered the highest quality. Inframe doors may expand and contract with the humidity (though the thicker they are, the less chance there is of this). A good supplier will offer an

after-sales service to check their fitting after a few months. Veneered doors are usually cheaper, and are easier to maintain. Check whether painted doors are machine-sprayed, or brush painted by hand. Carcasses Top-of-the-range carcasses are made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usually made from plywood or MDF veneer, while cheaper ones are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs. Check the thickness of the chipboard – 1820mm is a good guide. Hinges Poor hinges are usually made from thin metal and will wear so thin that the doors hang unevenly. While many people are happy with good quality Blum or Blumstyle hinges (concealed, adjustable & available in a variety of specs), solid brass butts are better.

Cooke & Lewis high gloss walnut veneer kitchen, from B&Q. Worktops At the budget end of the market, very cheap laminate worktops can burn, scratch and wear out quickly. Highpressure laminates are more durable than low-pressure ones; check that the underside is sealed to prevent water damage from appliances beneath. In a more luxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood, granite, man-made solid surfaces or

even glass or concrete. They’re more expensive, but they will last longer and look better. A last word: installation A good fitter can make an average kitchen appear fantastic, whereas poor fitting will make the most luxurious kitchen look terrible. Bear this in mind if you’re planning on doing it yourself. When buying an expensive, bespoke kitchen, it’s

wise to use the company’s own fitters. Otherwise, finding a good fitter is, as always, a question of recommendation. Local options There are a great deal of fantastic local businesses who can offer any of the options we’ve mentioned in the article above - flick through the magazine to find our favourites.

Seed Sowing on the Cheap If you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also

maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the

offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even unheated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do

have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil. Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email

All About Brows

- How To Pluck Like a Professional by Helen Taylor You might be surprised to read that there is a quick, simple and easy way to look years younger and all you’ll need is a pair of tweezers. Well-groomed eyebrows are essential for creating a youthful look, but it’s easy to forget them. Many women spend a great deal of time - and money - on trying to improve their skin, hiding lines and wrinkles and emphasising their best features, without giving their brows a second thought. Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful. It is crucial to do it correctly however, because the wrong shape, size or even colour eyebrows can have a dramatically different effect and leave you looking permanently surprised, confused or angry. It’s important to think before you pluck so here’s our guide to making sure you have beautiful brows: Work With What You Have The key is to work with your natural brow shape - whatever that may be. Some people are lucky enough to have brows that naturally sweep up to an arch, whereas others are born with much straighter eyebrows and need to do a little more work to create the desired look.

Health, Beauty & Lifestyle

Trimming You might not think it, but eyebrow hair is often quite long. A little trimming is essential for allowing the hair to lie nicely and fall into shape easily. Remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up - with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends. Next, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. To finish, brush the hair into place. Your eyebrows should already be looking much better. Time To Tweeze Tweezing can be a little painful at first, so it’s a good idea to open up your pores before you start by holding a warm facecloth over your brows. Ensure that you’re working in good natural light and determine where to begin. It’s good to start by holding a pencil vertically against the side of your nose and observe where it meets the brow - this gives a guide to where your eyebrows should begin. Pluck any hair away that grows before this point. Take a few hairs at a time and do the same on your other brow. Looking straight ahead, hold the pencil against your nostril and move it diagonally across the outer half of

the iris of your eye - the point at which the pencil is lying is where the arch of your brow should peak. To create the best shape for your brow, gradually tweeze a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Again, take a little at a time from each brow and keep them both looking even. To finish the shape, place your pencil back against your nostril and this time extend it diagonally to the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should be at its thinnest. Pluck from the arch to this point, tapering the line gradually, so that it is at its thinnest at the far corner. Don’t be tempted to pluck away too much hair - remember that the fuller your brows are, the more youthful you’ll look. Work slowly and steadily, tweezing one hair at a time and be sure to keep standing back from the mirror to check how the shape is progressing. Define Your New Shape When you’re finished you can enhance your new shape by applying a little colour to make your eyebrows really stand out. If your hair is fair, choose either a brow powder or pencil that’s a shade lighter than your hair colour. For dark hair, choose one that’s a shade darker. Gently sweep the product over the brow hair and set using a clear eyebrow gel.

Six and Two Threes! By The Unwidow

It is over a year ago now since I placed one of the nicest guys thatever needed feeding, into the ground and left him there with my parents. He is safe, till I see him again, because when he was taken, I hadn’t finished looking at him. I shall never, ever forget him, and that is how it should be, but now I will become unwidowed. So, with grim determination I perused the local papers, the Internet and asked just about everyone I knew ‘what does an ‘unwidow’ do around here?’ ‘Volunteer!!!!!!’ Was the cry from sundry friends (and enemies I suspect). ‘Cast off thy skinny Jeans, thy biker boots and thy lip gloss...and act as the seventy years old widow that thou art!......Be Appropriate!’ ‘Think ye not of dinner parties, 5 star hotels in Turkey, taking part in activities designed for and exclusive to couples!.....join something Widowey!...or Volunteer! Believe me, good folks, I did try! I searched diligently for weeks around the town to find that every place I found was inhabited by really lovely people who made me so very welcome...but one

Health, Beauty & Lifestyle

delightful gentleman’s greeting was ‘OOH! So You’re the NEW WIDOW…you’re a good looking woman...I’m on me own...I’ll take you for a drink if you like!’… I think he was one of Nature’s Volunteers!) I almost drove into the wheelie bins outside that establishment in my haste to escape! A Yoga Class Seemed like a good idea! Never done Yoga! Three elderly ladies and me! A rather camp, but somewhat delicious instructor with a false tan had us lying on the floor of a chilly room for three hours, to the sound of little bells ringing and charged six pounds fifty!....If I had a yen to do that, I could spend my six poundsfifty on a drinkable bottle of wine and go and lie down in my garage...until I realised the folly of my ways, at which time I could take the remains of the bottle ( like, almost all of it!) indoors and listen to some decent music...not bells ringing! Weight Watchers? I weigh seven and a half stones...there isn’t much of me to watch! Zumba, Line Dancing, BINGO! Methinks Not!....the first two lack dignity, and I reckon I would lose the will to live at all after ten minutes of the latter.

I know one widowed man who suddenly lost all his ‘mates’ when his dear wife died, because their wives didn’t like their husbands going out for a drink with case they ‘met women’....he is shy! And he won’t go out case women meet him!...and we women thought WE were the only ones embarrassed to go out alone! So, I thought, I cannot be the only live fish in this pond! I have struck up conversations in the Supermarket and at college with two other people like me...NOT bar flies, NOT Knitters and Natterers Not Volunteers...they too want to get together with others, go to a decent restaurant, book a holiday in a warmer place than Widnes, see a show, get dressed up and GO!...but it’s Six and two threes...if you are by yourself, you have noone to share it with, and if you have no-one to share it with, you are by yourself! Here’s a thought though...When there’s no light at the end of the tunnel…go and switch one on yourself! Come on guys...Let’s do it!...70 is the new 50!
