January is a horrid month so I always find that the new academic year is a better time to set yourself a new challenge or some new goals. I read just yesterday that we have 50,000 thoughts EVERY day, so if you are looking to set yourself a target then it’s definitely a good idea to write it down, otherwise it will remain just one of those many, many thoughts. If you are thinking a weight or health goal then Autumn is (almost) certainly a better time than January. With 16 or so weeks until Christmas there’s lots of time to get where you want to be or certainly make a massive impact on your goal in time for the big day. And chances are you can make a good groove with your new habits and practices well before the cold and dark nights hit us! I can hardly believe it but this is the last issue before our Christmas edition, so until then, take care.

Take the heat out of the kitchen this Summer! Warrington’s Shop Local ‘champions’, Paul and Andrea Clark, are preparing to take the heat out of the kitchen in homes across the town and make peoples’ holiday plans all the more easier. Ovenu Warrington, the town’s leading oven valeting specialists, is on hand to offer its professional service to homes and businesses in the town, amid brighter and warmer weather throughout summer. Paul said: “It may be barbeque season, but people must not forget about their ovens! They are the focal point of many homes and with autumn around the corner, there will be a greater emphasis placed on hot, home cooked meals. It’s best to stay ahead of the game and safeguard the oven from any potential health and safety risks in good time before it is used even more when temperatures begin to drop. “People would much rather be enjoying days out in summer with family and friends, than cleaning their ovens!” Paul and Andrea were recently awarded The Essential Guide’s Shop Local accolade, which is is presented to a Warrington business that receives the most nominations by members of the community. The pair were recognised for their commitment to delivering excellent customer service and going above and beyond for clients. Over the last 11 years, Ovenu Warrington has completed more than 10,000 oven valets and amassed 3,000 testimonials, as well as more than 90 5-star reviews on Google. 6

Paul added: “We have continued to enjoy a great deal of success and happiness operating throughout Warrington, and we can’t thank our loyal customers for their invaluable support. It was a proud moment for the family when we received the Shop Local award, and we are now looking to kick on and enhance our service even more!” The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves and placing them into design-registered equipment, which uses environmentally-friendly, non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes between two and three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition. Ovenu is accredited by the British Accreditation Bureau to ISO 9001 and all cleaning products used by Ovenu are environmentally friendly, bio-degradable and conform to the latest government REACH regulations. Ovenu’s Carbon Remover is also approved by the Vitreous Enamel Association. And the Winner is... It’s official – Bumblebee Heating & Plumbing is the Regional Boiler & Heating Installer and Contractor of the Year! On 3rd July, local Warrington firm Bumblebee Plumbing & Heating Ltd was awarded the Boiler and Heating Installer & Contractor of the Year 2018 at the Northwest Regional Energy Efficiency Awards, held at the Mercure Hotel, Haydock. Owner Ross Coen said, “We’re delighted to have won this award. It’s recognition of our commitment to our professionalism and high standards of customer service. We invest time and money into our apprentice schemes, creating a workforce that we can be proud of in the future.”

Judges considered the nature, scale and scope of the work carried out, and special emphasis was placed on any successful integration of any local or National Government Energy Efficiency schemes in the nominee’s projects.

The judges also looked at the impact their work has had within the local community; what their customers and local community have to say about them and what level of expertise the nominee had.

"We aim to give back to the community"

To be considered for the award, nominees had to outline what set them apart within their field, and demonstrate how they achieved clear energy savings.

Ross commented: “We aim to give back to the community and are offering to supply and install a free boiler to someone within the local community. We want to help transform the life of someone in the community, who otherwise might not be in a position to buy a new boiler themselves.”

If you know of a family or someone who has had a change of circumstances or needs help, you can nominate them on the Essential Guide website. Search for Bumblebee Heating and Plumbing Ltd. Simply fill in the form, stating who you’d like to nominate, and the reasons why they should be chosen. The decision will be made by Bumblebee Heating & Plumbing in conjunction with Essential Guide Magazine Ltd, with the installation taking place in August.

NW Lets

NW Estates can reflect on their one year anniversary in the property sales market and credit their success to sales manager Jennifer Box. Jen has spent 30 years in the housing market, building her extensive knowledge of the North West market. Jen has enjoyed a distinguished career in the estate agency world working for one of the major corporate brands. Jen says, “I have, for some time, wanted to take my skill set in the large corporate world to a more traditional

estate agency business and was delighted when an opportunity arose at NW Estates. My goal is to make NW Estates the “go to” estate agency in Warrington. I believe in combining technology and the personal touch to ensure all our clients not only sell their properties quickly but also enjoy a smooth and dare I say it pleasant experience. This coupled with clear communication throughout the entire sales process will be key to our success” Steve & Wendy Richardson, Directors at NW Estates, say, “We are thrilled Jen joined our team. The Sales division was a key focus this year and Jen’s knowledge in this field is unsurpassed and has been vital to the growth to this part of our business.”

Get more space at home for just £297

We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential.

ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Warrington area and is run by skilled local, Paul Langley, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.

For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it?

“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Paul. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £297 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”

And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years

The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Paul provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

Early Autumn September Gardening

Plants are in bloom earlier this year due to the dry weather which brings on flowering before the “normal” season.

Colour this autumn comes from Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm, a jolly yellow daisy like flower with a black centre which flowers for weeks if kept watered. They do best in a heavier soil that retains moisture and need to be split and replanted every few years to maintain their flowering. Another flowering perennial that is doing really well this year is the Penstemons. These produce foxglove shaped flowers for a long period from summer to autumn, especially if you dead head them. They have bright green leaves and the flowers come in red, white, all shades of pink and mauve/blue. This year they have performed well in the heat when other plants have wilted. The smaller leaved variety Garnet with dark red flowers is very good for hot Abelia weather.

If you are looking for colour from shrubs, then the Hydrangeas of all varieties are performing well if kept watered! They like a damper soil but if the leaves wilt, throw a couple of buckets of water on the roots and they should perk up. Although I love the Lacecap varieties, the mophead types are giving bold colour this year as you can see from the photo. Another late flowering shrub is Abelia Grandiflora. This needs a bit of shelter so a windswept site is not ideal. It has small neat glossy green foliage and in autumn has masses of small white scented flowers. Can get to 2m tall if left unpruned but cut it back after flowering or in spring and it will form a neat shrub about 1m tall. Work to do in the garden. Let your pumpkins and squashes harden off in the sun before bringing them in to a cool garage to store. Protect your brassicas with robust netting to avoid pigeons eating them over winter. If the soil is damp enough, perennials can be dug up and split and replanted. Crocosmias need this as after time they become congested and cease to flower well. Replant a few in soil enriched with well rotted manure for a good show next year.

If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens, Kelsall open on 1st and 2nd September, has 10 acres of gardens to discover including a sculpture trail.

Summer’s here and as I write this Black Thursday have just two more gigs before our summer break. As usual we will be taking August off, giving ourselves a complete break from gigging and rehearsal, allowing us to recharge our batteries in time for the Autumn and beyond. If our last gig was anything to go by we certainly deserve that rest! In June we played at the wedding of some friends and it turned into a mammoth set and a great evening. We were the last of three bands on stage, with our two support bands entertaining the crowd superbly until it as time for us to hit the stage. Inevitably timings always don’t go to plan at events like this and our anticipated start time slipped back for an already late 10.30pm to sometime shortly after 11.00pm. Having been there since around 6.00pm the guests were well fed and watered by this time and

ready for a dance. We had given the bride and groom our full set list some weeks before, so they could pick all their favourites. It was, therefore, a somewhat different selection of songs to our usual set, also the previous band, BBGM, had already played two or three of our regular numbers. We had originally planned two sets of around an hour each, allowing us a short break in the middle to recharge our batteries – and glasses! From the start to finish the dance floor was packed with guests dancing the night away to our tunes. As we approached what would have been the final song of the first set, Lee suggested that we carry on for a bit longer to keep the crowd in the moment with us. In the end we played non-stop for around two and three-quarter hours. What a great night!

Classic Rock Band Next up for us is a first visit to the First and Last Bar None in Leigh, followed by a welcome return to the Musketeer, also in Leigh the following week. Strictly speaking it’s not our first visit to the First and Last as we have played in the building before, in fact one of our very first gigs was at the Avenue – the previous name of the First and Last. That would have been about seven or eight years and two singers ago! Then it will be time for our summer break and holidays abroad for some of us, but we’ll be back ready to rock in September!

If you want to know more about Black Thursday you can follow us on Facebook ( and if you’ have a party or other event coming up that you’d like us to play at, please get in touch either through the Facebook page or by phone on 07881 521150.
