Making your way in the world to day takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot. ■ Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows you name, and they’re always glad you came. Excerpt from the Theme song for "Cheers.” Words and Music by Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo Sung by the "Class of 89” in 1984

Above: The beauty of Mauna Kea is the back ground of our Ohia trees. Below: The sun tries to pierce it’s last rays through the Hawaiian skies.

The pu’u that overlooks our school- looking over the peaks of our trees.

The beauty of our land never ceases to amaze the eye, and we live in its center. Surrounded by the aura of creation, we tend to overlook it. These are just a few of the wonderous moments of Hawaii, captured by the shutter of a camera.

Top left: Our campus on a usual afternoon. Top right: The sunrise - a gold star just beginning to make its move on a new day. Left: The water and its blue color that entrance some who then can never stay away from it. Below left: A ray of light reaches through the leaves of our forest of ohia trees. Below right: The volanco which has created our land billows smoke to tell of Pele’s fury when she meets with the water.

Despite the mandatory sports require ment people still enjoy themselves on the school's facilities. Part of the joy extends from an almost unlimited vari ety of activities ranging from cross country to swimming.

Katie Irvine became one of the locals after her Junior year in Belgium.

Every year students take advantage of their vacations. It's a time to relax and learn about different cultures. This summer, a number of students had the opportunity to travel all around the world. Tami Holschuh spent her summer working w ith "Teen Missions” building a school for the children of Sipacate, Guatemala. She brought home lasting memories of hard work, perserverance and especially the love and opti mism of the people.

Stephanie and Vanessa Rutgers spent their sum mer in France. Smile for the camera girls.

Right: While in Idaho, Fiona and Erin Ednie took a trip down the Salmon River. Below: Julie and Keith Marrack were just a little lost and confused on their cruise to Alaska.

Upper Right: Even in Barcelona, Jennifer Link and Maylyn Sanchez are always cool. "W here’s the party guys? Right: Becky .Caldwell took time out from the slopes from her busy schedule while attending school in Austria.

Through the best of times and through the worst of times, H.P.A. turns 40. H.P.A. has given the g ift of learning to thousands of students from all faces of the earth. Students come and go as from sunrise to sun set. From days, to months, to years the strive for excellence lives on. Much thanks to those people who have made the H.P.A. students ex perience dreams and possibilities for the future.

The front gate previously stood at the-Kohala en trance of the school for 39 years. The class of 1988 constructed a beautiful new sign to the entrance of the school. The memory of their class will live on forever. 12

Over the past ten years H.P.A.’s surroundings have grown considerably. A once completely barren campus is now covered w ith tall trees and lush foliage. The campus also has a beautiful new tennis complex consist ing of 1 lighted indoor courts and 1 outdoor courts, w ith a tennis pro shop.

Though the old and new coaches come and go, the dedication and love still remains.

13

During the year, new students face many challenges. Their first year is always a very difficult, but exciting experience. The students adjust to school life and the academic de mands of their classes. Although it is thier first year, new students get into the Kamakani spirit by making many new acquaintances. By the end of the year, they will become part of the "H.P.A. experience.”

1. Chris Caldwell crams for a test before chapel. 2. Every girl’s dream . . . . 3. "Don’t even think about it!” 4. Krista - making new acquaint ances

1. Bright smiles after a hard game of tennis. 2. "W hat in the world am I doing here?” States Lisa Bleyle. 3. What a smile! 4. Don’t w orry Pedro, be happy! 5. Newcomers to the H.P.A. experience. 6. "W hat ever happened to Summer?” Wonders Brian Babbitt. 7. "C ’mon April, let’s do the tw ist.”

I am watched by the eyes in a peacock’s tail. All day I hear the voices h issin g , Mad girl, you have no roof, no door, no bed. The world flies by in its fragments: valleys and hilltops, doors, doors. The evening grasses in which the footsteps dissappearI lean down into their wavering, the story of each blade sequestered. The ants with crumbs on their backs, the black dismembered bees. Where is the girl that dreamed of being held? Where is the girl who felt as she walked into a stand of narrow trees made white by ffostfor did she dream it?)the grass made steely white by frost, the air so thick with fog she couldn’t see her handsthat she would come, if she ju st kept on walking long enough, to arms that would hold her, take her in? I remember and do not remember being her. The towns clog the valleys like something made of fear. Fear of lonliness, of dream. They huddle at the bottom of the hills, offering up the hollowed hours a brief and fragile calmness: glasses of clear water, windowsills of herbs. And touch, which is sometimes not a lie. And voices, voices like nets cast out into the fear. Somewhere a child lives in her crib repeating the names of her parents, the names of her pets and her toys as she falls off to sleep. The child asleep now, the woman untying her apron, the man going out to the store.

PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Som etim es the hardest thing to do is to start som ething which your not exactly sure how to do. Once you start, the feelings and emotions flow out like vivid colors of paint from tipped cans. The colors overlap one another to form a picture, and som etim es blend into new colors. The original m eaning of the picture comes from the artist, but it is the observer who creates the personal m eaning. I give congratulations to the class of ’89 and everyone else who has had the courage and perseverance to venture into unfam iliar territory to achieve w hat they desired. These are some of the characteristics that the class of ’89 holds that w ill help us to build a solid generation. N ever let go of these strengths for they are more valuable than anything else. W ithout them , our generation will be a picture in which the only color is gray and has no meaning. Good-bye to the people that I m et during my six years at HPA. I have been very fortunate in knowing you and hope th at som eday our paths m ay cross again. To the underclassmen, take advantage of your surroundings... they may benefit you more than you realize. To the class o f ’89... you need my good luck to help bring you success. You are h a lf w ay there already. Adam Norwood

Athletic Director's Address by Pete Provencal The primary goal in the athletic program at HPA is to promote the physical, mental, social, emotional, and moral well-being of the participants. It is hoped that athletes in our school will be a positive force in preparing our youth for an enriching and vital role in life. The athletic program is an important and integral part of the total program at HPA. Through your participa tion, you have given time, energy, and loyalty to our programs. Your involvement in athletic competition added to our school spirit. It helped everyone in our community to develop pride in our school. Thanks for being dignified, not alibiing and above all display ing good sportsmanship.

f ' The HPA Arts curriculum has developed and grown in m any different aspects. The Visual Arts offers a variety of classes from the hum anities to year足 book. The M usic department, for the first tim e in the history of HPA has started a concert band in the Middle and Upper Schools. The history of m any European nations is taught in the m usic and art classes. They learn about important v people, places and events th at J

C helped shaped our m odem society. This is also a time when students can be relieved of academic demands and enhance their creative ele足 m ents. One facility that will be incor足 porated into HPA's future is the Art Center. The ground break足 ing ceremonies will be held in June of 1989 and it is expected to be completed in the fall of the following year.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Most students learn in classrooms put this year HPA went a step further and taught underwater. On the submarine Atlantis, the science classes learned what secrets lie at the bottom of the sea. A total of three trips were made a t Kailua Bay. Beginning on a launch boat, the classes were brought to the submarine which surfaced out of nowhere. Submerg ing 75 - SO ft. below sea level, the students peered out through the portholes of the sub. Students were amazed at the divers feeding the fish and eels, swimming about the coral. - -■

Eva Perez joined the HPA staff in 1956, long before the school was moved to its present campus. She has been a loyal and positive elem ent in every phase of the school’s development. Eva's integrity and dependability as head of the housekeeping staff are of the highest order; and this, with a loving kindness for any who turn to her, has given her a position of stature in both the school and community at large. —Jim and Lynn Taylor 1989 H o ’o k u p a ’a: loyal, fa ith fu l a n d ste a d fa st.

This yearbook is dedicated to Eva Perez, an outstanding member of the HPA family, who exemplifies greatness in her strength, loyalty, dignity and purpose.

1989 H eadm aster’s Yearbook Address My first hope for you is th a t you have felt th e power and exhilaration and the joy of giving, because it is giving to others th a t will m ake for a fascinating dim ension in your lives. You have learned, I hope, to be unselfish; th a t is the first and final com m andm ent for all of you who would be useful to others both here and in your life beyond. If you th in k only of yourself, you are choking the source of your development, w hich is m ental and spiritual expansion through thought and help for others. I venture to say th a t the only ones among you who will be truly happy are those of you who will have sought and found how to give of yourselves. I hope th a t you have realized th a t th ere w as no one unim portant in th is comm unity and th a t there will be no one unim portant in w hatever your future com m unity will be. No on of you is so rich and secure th a t you will not need some help a t some tim e. No on in the Class of 1989 is so poor as not to be able to help, in some way, other persons in need. The bottom line: continue to open your eyes and look for the hum an beings in your lives. Give someone a little tim e or friendliness, a little sym pathy or social uplift, because in every comm unity there are lonely individuals to whom we m u st reach out, and I am convinced we will be stronger in proportion to every such effort to reach out and to help our neighbors. As someone once said, perhaps it is, indeed, our checkbooks or our student bank accounts which, after all, offer the tru e list of those things which we really believe. My second hope is th a t you have m ade a t least one, life long, friend here. The opportunities, I believe, were and will be everywhere and I hope, furtherm ore, the friend you m ade was someone different from you - someone from a different background, someone of a different color, d iffere n t religious persuasion for if the world is ever going to be one, you have had an opportunity to sta rt the process here a t HPA. The rules for m aking a friend are really simple. F irst, ju s t be a friend, and second, take tim e for friendship because friendship, after all, is probably w hat life m ay finally be all about. E verything m aterial and everything you have learned here exists in the end for persons. I hope you rem em ber th a t HPA was and is a hum an institution and th a t you carry a p a rt of this institution with you for the re st of your lives. W hen th is place calls upon you to help, you m ust stand ready to help. We will need you. It has been a g reat and wonderful year and on behalf of the faculty, the A dm inistration and the Board of Governors, I w ant to commend the Class of 1989 for m aking it all so. 20,

Good bye, good luck, and God speed.
