W elcom e to a typical “ day in the life” of an H .P.A . student. As the sun rises, we find the students up and racing with the clock to make it through another hectic day. 7:00 A.M.- Breakfast, Cleaning Dorm rooms, and Flag-raising start the morning before 8:00 chapel. B efore venturing on to the first class at 8:30, a student stops at his locker, or takes a few minutes to chat with a friend and prepare to meet a day of “ confron tations” with teachers and studies. During Choir, time is taken to sing or play a .song

12:00- Finally, it’s lunch! The school day continues with more work, socializing with friends, and a few more classes. 2:30- Classroom Cleaners enthusiastically participate in the W ork Program while other students choose to take advantage of the extra studying time. A t 3:30 it’s time for two hours of competitive and intramural athletics, while the less fortunate spend this time cruising in the infirmary. 5:30- Th e boarders retreat to the dorms to prepare for a scrumptuous dinner. 8:00- The ever-popular S T U D Y H A L L begins. Finally at 9:30, the couch potatoes enjoy a few precious moments o f relaxation before lightsout, when they fall into bed only to arise to another H .P .A . day.

C ongratu lations and w ell d on e, Class o f 1988! It has been a truly rem arkable y ea r and much o f its greatness is du e to you r leadership, you r cou ra ge, and you r ex am p le. T h e quality o f boarding life and the caring and unique and special w ays fo r underclassm an you h a ve u plifted and brought to new heights. It is m y h o p e that you r ex em p la ry rec o rd caring fo r the school carries on fo r the next school y ea r and the yea rs ahead. I think you have grasp ed b etter than you r pred ecessors the idea that the k n ow led g e and skills, invaluable as th ey are, you have gain ed at H .P .A . without good ness and com passion, a re dangerou s -even em p ty. M y h o p e is that you have realized that education includes the art o f learning h ow to w ak e up the eternal m iracle o f life with its limitless possiblities. It is d e ve lo p in g that d e e p sensitivity through which you m ay su ffer and kn ow tra g ed y and die a little, but through which* you m ay su ffer and kn ow the grandeur and dignity o f human life. W e ’ v e had such an e x p erie n ce this y ea r with the passing o f G am brelle. It is d e ve lo p in g a sense o f oneness with all life not on ly with you r classm ates h ere and the years ahead, but identifying y ou rself also with the hopes, dream s, fears and longing o f others that you m ay understand them and h elp them lo v e them . It is learning to interpret the thoughts, feelin gs and m ood s o f others, their cries and pleas fo r help. It should include

searching fo r beau ty e v e ry w h e re - a flo w e r, the ocean, an experim en t, a p o em , the hills. It is know ing w on der, aw e, humility in the fa ce o f life, unexplained m ysteries and G o d ’s m ysterious actions. This education m ay o r m ay not m ake you m ore efficient or m ore m aterially secure, but it will enrich you r personality and character, and increase the w ealth o f you r minds. This kind o f education is the grea test insurance against old a ge and against w orn out grow th and physical disability. In fact, no m atter how m any th ere m ay be in you r fam ily, no m atter how many friends you m ay have, you are, in a certain sense, fo rc e d to lead lonely lives because w e have all the days o f our existence to live with ou rselves. H ow essential it is, “ T o furnish the mind, to be able to live inside a mind with attractive and interesting pictures on the walls.” It has been a w onderfu l year; you r accom plishm ents and standard of co m p ortm en t will live on fo r m any, many years. I h op e that you will rem em b er you r days at H .P .A . and that you r days m ay be filled with jo y and love.
