the luxury of meaning

Welcome to our reimagined Lifestyles South Florida publication! For over three decades, we have been sharing the architectural beauty of South Florida’s finest homes and condominium residences through direct delivery into your mailboxes across Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Previous issues of Lifestyles have made it all around the world — traveling with our many Friends and Associates to the farthest corners of the globe. It has been the pinnacle source that many have turned to when looking to purchase a luxury residence in South Florida. We’re very excited to present you with this newly designed collectible, created in partnership with Havas House and filled with wonderful images of high-quality homes — which Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty is known for — in addition to informative reviews of other luxury products and services. While this newest iteration of Lifestyles showcases the beautiful residences we offer, it also presents the luxury lifestyle in unique and innovative ways. From fashion and travel destinations to luxury trends and the latest must-have gadgets, you will now be immersed entirely in luxury as never before. I hope you find the information in these pages entertaining and inspiring because that is what we are seeking to do: to help you, our readers, experience luxury in its most holistic form. Your luxury shopping experience should be effortless, and the same is true when searching for your next home. When you see a residence that piques your interest, I welcome you to contact one of our experienced luxury Associates featured throughout this magazine. They are among the very best in South Florida and are here to exceed your expectations. Enjoy the experience! Ron Shuffield, President & CEO Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty

When asked to revisit the purpose of this relaunched publication, I was struck by the weight of said task. How does one curate relevant content for an audience as astute as the members of the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate? I took to the challenge with verve, and, after many conversations, an idea of showcasing aspirational lifestyle — one that’s rooted in values synonymous with the brand — began to emerge. Consequently, our editorial purpose will celebrate people, places, and ideas that eclipse trends, embrace their provenance, and lean towards the future. And they will be expressed through the lens of luxury in all of its manifestations. This inaugural issue takes a look at meaningful happenings throughout South Florida, the Hamptons, and the world that affect, directly or otherwise, Berkshire Hathaway’s endeavors. For an editor, this challenge is equivalent to an athlete competing in the Olympics, an editorial tour de force if you will, and I couldn’t be happier to be part of it. I hope you will find a reflection of our lofty purpose in the story about Donna Karan and her commitment to conscious consumerism or our celebration of the Adrienne Arsht Center and its dedication to the art community. For fun reads, check out our profiles on Miami-bred actress Otmara Marrero and the real estate enthusiast/tequila lover Rande Gerber. We kick things off with our cover star Lais Ribeiro in a gorgeous editorial that bridges our love of fashion, Miami, and jaw-dropping real estate in a style that’s all its own. Happy reading. César Pelli-designed Adrienne Arsht Center sits at the heart of Miami’s cultural district.

CULTURE AT HEART To claim that Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is going big for its 15th anniversary would be an understatement. When it comes to one of the largest spectator spaces of this sort in the United States, scale at this César Pelli-designed arts hub carries a significant meaning. Credited with having spearheaded new development in the city’s downtown area, today this local behemoth of cultural engagement sits at the apex of a thriving cultural district. Just ask Adrienne Arsht, the art doyenne credited with securing its financial footing. “A performing arts complex offers an extraordinary value to a city,” Arsht says. “The Arsht Center has played a key role in the resurgence and transformation of the immediate area, the city, and beyond.” To pay homage to this achievement the planned celebration certainly matches in its grandeur. The season ahead reflects Arsht Center’s growth over the years, as well as new programming that broadens its appeal without alienating the classic pillars on which it was founded. With symphony, opera, ballet, and the Broadway and jazz series still making up its backbone, going forward the agenda will champion Miami stories and local artists as part of its repertoire. There are talks of artistic residences, extension to its theater and visual arts programs, plus a development of a film element. Another cause for celebration will be the center’s focus on programs and initiatives that make meaningful connections with all members of the community. This progress resonates with Arsht’s early vision for the complex. “I knew the center would serve as a catalyst for much growth and excitement, and enhance the quality of life for our community,” she explains. “I am delighted, but I am not surprised.” BY ANETTA NOWOSIELSKA

TUNED IN Since 1853 Steinway & Sons have set an uncompromising standard for sound, craftsmanship, and design. This venerable manufacturer has been the piano of choice for Diana Krall, Billy Joel, Cole Porter, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. In 2015, Steinway launched SPIRIO, a masterpiece of engineering that permits owners either to play the piano themselves or to access a vast, 4,000-piece-strong-andgrowing library of music played by renowned international pianists. With SPIRIO | r, the latest evolution, pianists can now record, edit, playback, search, and save their performances.

With its recently launched expanded Global Sustainability Program, this Berkshire Hathaway company has implemented several initiatives. Its corporate responsibility endeavors go further than philanthropic initiatives and sustainability programs; they strongly encourage consumer participation. On the business side, NetJets is purchasing enough sustainable aviation fuel to account for all flights out of San Francisco, California, where the fuel supply is located, and its home base of Columbus, Ohio. Traditional jet fuels are produced from crude oil then distilled in refineries. This greener alternative is produced in biorefineries using solid and municipal waste and then it’s blended with Jet A fuel. Its usage results in a significant reduction

in carbon emissions caused by the traditional burning of fossil fuels and utilizes waste that would otherwise be incinerated or left in landfills. In other good news, NetJets is partnering with WasteFuel and Prime Infra to develop biorefineries in areas where solid waste management is a major problem. Consumer wise, since the launch of Blue Skies By NetJets® in 2015, participants have access to environmentally friendly ways to fly. The program encourages taking responsibility for the impact of flights by purchasing the equivalent amount of carbon credits to ensure their flight activity is carbon neutral. The emissions are offset by ClimateCare®, an effort to protect forests, capture and destroy landfill gas, and scale up renewable energy distribution.

With over a billion dollars in closed sales, Nancy Batchelor is as big as it gets in South Florida’s competitive real estate market. As a top associate at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty for over 20 years, she has excelled at finding dream pads for celebs, CEOs, and world elite alike. Clockwise from top left: Living Room at Faena; Bal Harbour Shops; The Fly’s Eye Dome at the Design District; Winter Equestrian Festival; Preferred meal at Joe’s Stone Crab; Batchelor training with horse.

BY LUKE HIMMELSBACH

What keeps you competitive? Anything with a horse. I watch videos of my riding lessons and past shows of me riding, always trying to improve. I’m trying to get better at riding since it doesn’t get easier and you are working as a team with the horse. No two rides are the same. Where do you get your fashion fix? Bal Harbour, of course, Design District, Saks. Love fitted and comfortable with a twist, Gucci, and nothing with too wild of colors. I love shoes and handbags and clothes with timeless style. I love the Jackie O look. This fall and winter season we will find you in... Miami Beach and Wellington, the Horse Capital of the World and home to the Winter Equestrian Festival. Or Aspen for a ski trip and Ocean Reef Club in the Keys, but it might be hard to leave since I like it in Miami so much. If you

had to quarantine again, where would you go? I’d stay at my waterfront home on Pine Tree Drive where we have the boat, gym in the garage, and a pool. Book on your side table? “Hello Fears” by Michelle Poler. Charity you support. Sylvester Cancer Center. Your last cocktail/meal would be? For a last cocktail I’d go to the Living Room at Faena. Joe’s Stone Crab would be my last meal. Nothing original here, but it’s a family favorite. If you could spend the afternoon with anyone in the world it would be... Tony Robbins. What are you gratful for? I am happy that I have beat cancer and thrilled that so many great people are moving to South Florida. Of course, I’m proud that I have been married 29 years and have three incredibly nice kids, and a job I love that is exciting every day.

S PONS ORED CONT ENT

SUNSHINE WELCOME MANUEL M. DEL CAÑAL, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AT OCEAN FINANCIAL SERVICES, OFFERS INSIGHT ON HOW NEW SOUTH FLORIDA RESIDENTS CAN MAKE THE TRANSITION A SMOOTH ONE.

What makes Miami such an appealing option for investors and those seeking to relocate? Miami has always been an attractive destination due to its incredible beauty, cultural diversity, and its developed ecosystem for investors, business owners, and entrepreneurs. With its prevalence of talented and multilingual bankers, investment advisors, real estate brokers, attorneys, accountants, public relations experts, technology gurus, and other service professionals that cater to the international market, Miami retains its leadership position within the Americas as a top city to live, work, and invest. How can a new resident best maximize their setup in Miami? The best advice that I can provide a new investor or resident is to seek out local subject matter expertise. While Miami has a very accommodating business climate, developing key advisor relationships is a critical success factor. At Ocean Financial Services, before our clients invest, we strongly urge them to seek proficient legal and tax advice to ensure efficient and effective structures that complement their investments and business plans. This is particularly important for international families that may have residency ties and business interests in multiple jurisdictions.

MANUEL M. DEL CAÑAL Chief Executive Officer, Ocean Financial Services

What are some of the pitfalls to avoid? Other than a two-month dip during the beginning of the pandemic, we have essentially been in a bull investment and real estate market for the better part of the last 11 years. In spite of this great run, the old adage that past performance may not indicate future results applies here. Diversification among asset classes is key to long-term accumulation and preservation of wealth.

O CEA NF INA NCIA L.CO M Member FINRA/SIPC

Any housing market tips? Consider investing in transitoriented real estate projects. The criticality of new public transportation corridors throughout the tri-county area will increase in importance as our population continues to grow. This will have a favorable impact on real estate close to existing and proposed transportation nodes. What wealth management advice do you have? At Ocean Financial Services, we pride ourselves on first understanding the personal, family, and business profile of our clients. We then develop investment strategies in line with our clients’ goals and objectives. Right now, low market interest rates are playing a very important part in this strategy development process. By utilizing various asset classes and diversification, we can seek to obtain improved returns that are agnostic to future interest rate movements. The key is active communication with our clients, disciplined and ongoing review of investment performance, and active rebalancing among asset classes and investments. Best ways to engage with the community? I serve on the board at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. For a new investor or resident of Miami, I cannot think of a better organization to engage with all facets of our community and to seek out mutually fruitful business leads and relationships. I once met an accountant at a Chamber event who then introduced me to one of his clients looking to finance a large Miami real estate project. We quickly mobilized the Bank’s lending team and eventually closed on a large construction loan to finance the project. That is the power of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

From the opening bell of the stock markets to the excited shrieks of clients in awe, Galey Alix is a multi-hyphenate whose balancing act includes working at Goldman Sachs and redesigning homes. Just check out Alix’ hugely popular social media accounts to witness her infectious energy in action.

Clockwise from top left: Floral details; mixing high and low interior ideas; Alaskan King Crab Legs at Truluck’s; Alix’s favorite podcaster Danae Mercer; playing with proportions; Alix’s new product line will be out in September.

Favorite spot to shop? My go-tos for all things home décor are Homegoods and Pottery Barn. They are at opposite price points, however, if you pair one expensive décor item with a few less expensive pieces and do it in the right way, it all looks expensive. What’s keeping you entertained right now? The two podcasts I cannot get enough of are “Just B” with Bethenny Frankel and “Talking Out Loud” with Danae Mercer. Danae’s podcast really hits home with me because she’s all about self-love and normalizing talking about mental health, especially when it comes to eating disorders and body image... something I’ve battled myself. As for shows... I have one guilty pleasure and it’s the only show I’ve watched in the last year: The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. Best place to unwind? My backyard, working in

my garden while music is playing and my dogs are playing in the pool. Last meal before you meet your maker? Alaskan King Crab Legs from Truluck’s with drawn butter. I’m a pescatarian solely due to my love of crab legs, which I reserve for special occasions. I think a “last meal” could be deemed a special occasion... though terrifying for the crab. This fall... I am launching my new décor line for Galey Alix Designs. Recent discovery? Replacing FOMO with JOMO (joy of missing out). Instead of feeling an insatiable need to be doing everything with everyone and for everyone at all times, I’ve been enjoying carving out more time for myself. There’s a joy in doing things just for me and intentionally missing out on everything else. Being more present with myself has become my newly discovered passion.

autumnal almanac From Palm Beach to Miami Beach, here are six reasons to get out and support South Florida’s top cultural institutions.

INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART, MIAMI ICA offers South Florida a show of rarely seen works in an installation by pioneering artist Betye Saar. “Serious Moonlight” spans significant installations created from 1980 to 1998. Showcasing this lesser-known aspect of the artist’s practice, the survey provides new insights into Saar’s explorations of ritual, spirituality, and cosmologies, as well as themes of the African diaspora. From October 29 through April 17, 2022.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART NORTH MIAMI Hurry and visit MOCA for the “Michael Richards: Are You Down?” exhibition, which features works by the late Richards, who died on September 11, 2001, while working in his studio during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This Afro-Caribbean artist’s sculptural and drawing practice reflects on issues of racial inequity, anti-blackness, and diasporic identity. The exhibition will be open to the public until September 11, on the 20th anniversary of the tragic event.

PÉREZ ART MUSEUM MIAMI “Jedd Novatt: Monotypes and More” is a contemporary art lover’s dream. A solo

show worth seeing, this Parisian master is known for welded sculptures of seemingly incongruous cubes teetering on top of each other. Comprised of cubes with exposed voids, Novatt’s sculptures are as much about line and drawing in space as they are about occupying space with mass. The works are monumentally scaled, often outdoors, and are defined by their placement in the landscape as well as connection to the public. From October 14 through June 26, 2022. ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER OF PERFORMING ARTS Legendary Cuban pianist and composer Jesús “Chucho” Valdés presents “La Creación (The Creation),” his new work for big band, AfroCuban percussion, and vocals. Led by musical directors Hilario Durán and John Beasley and performed by the Yoruban Orchestra, presented in partnership with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Big Band, the work explores the creation story according to the AfroCuban religion Santería. It represents a return to big-band sonorities, including elements of ritual music, African music, the blues, in what Valdés describes as, “very significant work... my masterpiece — so far.” November 15. / 26 L IF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA

NSU ART MUSEUM FORT LAUDERDALE “Photographing the Fantastic” will showcase key artworks that transform the mundane into fantastic scenes and include works by Berenice Abbott, Alexandre Arrechea, Edward Burtynsky, Vera Lutter, Maria Martinez-Canas, Zanele Muholi, Cindy Sherman, and others. Furthermore, a solo show by Jared McGriff and another titled “The Art of Assemblage” will coincide with the opening. From November 21 through spring 2022. NORTON MUSEUM OF ART “Special Guest: Beaching the Boat (Afternoon Light),” is a masterpiece by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, a relatively unfamiliar name to most American museum visitors. Yet, he was hailed as a “master of light” by no less an artist than Claude Monet. Open through 2023.

Long-time Aventura resident and top Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty Associate, Scott Patterson, shares why so many are interested in these three unique maritime cities.

“For breakfast, it’s a no brainer: Bluestone Lane. Always,” Benz explains. For a snack on the go, she also recommends Joni’s Kitchen for a quick and delicious bite.

From its deep-water canals to its unique location between two major cities and airports, and its incredible beaches, Patterson says, “Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Aventura are the places to be.”

Shop Wise

A Maritime Culture

“No matter if you’re looking for an outfit for a day at the beach or a night on the town, Wyld Blue is a onestop shop. Anything from Chanel purses to Gucci kids’ shoes. We have it all.”

“Regarded as a ‘Boater’s Paradise,’ these unique areas offer an opportunity to be outside the hustle and bustle, but not far. You can pair a city lifestyle with a quiet and comfortable waterfront home.”

Lobster Salad with a View

A Culinary Delight

With many choices to eat out, dinner with a view is a must. “Not only does Dureyea’s have the best seafood in Montauk; the views can’t be matched.”

“The finest world-class cuisine is all around you,” says Patterson. “The waterfront dining options are endless, and there is always something new to try.”

Night Moves

Style Savvy

Surf Lodge is where you’ll find her at the end of a long day. “The best live music venue by a long shot, with a stage allowing you to be feet from the performers and incredible waterfront views.”

For Karan, the creator of Donna Karan New York and DKNY clothing labels who began cultivating a defined point of view about conscious consumerism long before it became a hot trend, she sees how the outbreak of COVID-19 has exacerbated all the issues her industry was already struggling with. In the wake of a retail-business-spinning and fast-fashion-ruining-the-environment situation, this icon’s message seems particularly clairvoyant. “It’s about storytelling. Community. Connection,” she says about Urban Zen, her holistic lifestyle concept and philanthropic foundation. “Now more than ever people need a community to come to.” Karan has created her own style of storytelling through fashion in the jewelry artisans she curates and gives a platform to, in the Balinese furniture she brings stateside to her clients, and in the travel-inspired pieces of her 2021 fall/winter collection. It is Karan’s worldly, cultured lifestyle tinged with do-gooderism and purpose that attracts her ideal consumers. She’s laser-focused on speaking to them authentically in all ways. Urban Zen is for women who connect with her story and buy into the smart girl’s elevated consciousness that comes with sexy draped pieces and ornate sandals. To evolve and survive, perhaps the fashion business has to be about more than cranking out lifeless pieces for e-commerce. From an aesthetic point of view, Karan’s brand is for women who gravitate towards neutrals (no flashy colors here) and want to be draped sensuously in light silks, linens, and jerseys that hug them in the right places and forgive in the wrong ones. Postpandemic, where everyone reembraced

comfortable, lightweight clothes, it seems like Karan was perfectly poised to emerge triumphant. “I am embarrassed to say I had to reorder a lot of pieces because I didn’t have enough,” she says. The clothes are a backdrop to pair everything with big, bold statement jewelry. “Jewelry is so important right now because it’s an expression of yourself,” she says. Like her clothes, the necklaces and bracelets are weightless. “I can’t put any weight on my body.” But, in its search for a meaningful context in style, Urban Zen is for people who care about their community, want to participate in conversations about serious issues facing the world, and then get about the business of fixing them. That is where the fashion industry could be taking notes. Tapping into meaning, story, and depth. Do less, but do more with it. Find the authentic

purpose in a limited clothing collection and then share it in all aspects of a client’s life. Education is paramount to Karan’s efforts. If you’re coming into an Urban Zen space or visiting her website, she’s made sure your mind and heart is going to be engaged in multiple ways. In a graduate program she started at Parsons School of Design, Karan has been bringing fashion students down to Haiti for years so they can see the incredible work of artisans there and, “so the two cultures could come together. Those kids didn’t want to leave. They loved it so much.” Another subject that’s close to her heart is an integrative therapist program through Urban Zen Foundation. In April, she launched UZIT, a platform that aims to take care of those health professionals who take care of everyone else. “We need to find the calm in the chaos right now. When my husband was dying of cancer, he made me promise to take care of the nurses,” she explains. “The nurses need help.” UZIT is about blending Eastern self-care techniques within the Western medical community. The philosophy echoes her clothing brand. The thing is, Karan doesn’t have to be doing any of this. Twenty years ago, she sold her eponymous company Donna Karan Collection and DKNY to LVMH for beaucoup bucks. With the rumored $643 million LVMH buyout, she could be enjoying life while lounging on the very Balinese furniture she is now selling. No one would blame her. Or she could be hobnobbing with famous friends like Barbra Streisand, Iman, or the Clintons. Instead, Karan is starting over in a way. She is reimagining what retail could be in this not-so-brave new world. She created spaces where clothes, furniture, artisan work, causes, consciousness, health, and family are all intertwined and working in concert. In Sag Harbor, her space intermingles with Tutto il Giorno, a restaurant owned by her daughter Gabby Karan De Felice. That way she is surrounded by those who mean the most to her. “Everyone comes together, hangs out, talks, and eats.” Sure, it’s dining, but “it’s all part of the same philosophy,” explains Karan. “It’s still all about community and connection.”

A light-filled living space created by French Moroccan designer Rita Chraibi in a bay-front condominium within French architect Jean Nouvel’s Monad Terrace Miami Beach residences takes equal advantage of light, views, and indoor-outdoor living by fusing interior and fashion design to humanize the space. “I approached the interior as a couturier approaches fashion design — with meticulous attention to detail and tailored to perfection,” says Chraibi. “I selected the furnishings of Jean Paul Gaultier’s collection for Roche Bobois because I believe they achieve what I continuously seek in my profession: a touch of madness and fantasy mixed with extreme elegance.”

2/ ADAM TIHANY Designed by Alessia Genova of Tihany Design, the living space of a three-story villa residence designed by architect Khalid Al Najjar features striking natural materials, hand-chosen art, and a curated selection of furniture and accessories. The open courtyards of the residence repeat key materials used inside, creating a sense of harmony with the outdoors.

“We wanted to integrate interior and exterior to create a space that was what the client requested: a casual, elegant, and easy space for entertaining,“ says Arango about this indoor/outdoor kitchen area of one of her Floridian projects. “The elements used reflect how well you can pair organic materials — such as the petrified wood table with metal base and the wood floor — with more luxurious elements, like the glass light fixture and marble countertop on the kitchen island.”

2/ JEAN NOUVEL An open kitchen in a 5,200-square-foot condo at Jean Nouvel’s Monad Terrace residences features Gaggenau appliances, marble counters and floors, and a slatted wood ceiling that flows seamlessly into the living spaces and complements a thoroughly modern lifestyle.

Woven chairs from JANUS et Cie and a chandelier of brass rings keeps the ambiance relaxed and the mood light. “Making sure that the view was uninterrupted was important,” Walsh says.

bedrooms 1/ DUNAGAN DIVERIO DESIGN The master bedroom is the pièce de résistance of a spectacular Venetian Island home overlooking Biscayne Bay. “Situated in its own wing, the voluminous suite is luxurious and elegant with an abundance of soft, supple textures,” says designer Charlotte Dunagan. Exotic ipe wood grounds the space, while the modern bed is placed to best appreciate the stunning views, a velvety chocolate-brown chaise offers the perfect spot to lounge, and dark wood doors close for privacy.

At once formal and relaxed, the traditionally furnished master bedroom of designer Marshall Watson’s own Greek Revival home on Gardiners Bay in the Hamptons is defined mostly with classic furnishings and cherished heirlooms. “I don’t believe in throwing anything away,” says Watson. An uplifting palette of buttery yellows, misty grays, and steely blues gracefully mediates the divide between indoors and out. “I love grabbing color from the outdoors and pulling it in,” Watson adds. “A home needn’t be fussy or untouchable to be elegant. To me, it’s about comfort, light, portions, harmony, and balance.”

2/ BETH WEBB In a 10,000-square-foot family getaway home in Lake Keowee, South Carolina, Atlanta designer Beth Webb crafted the master bath to merge with the landscape. Clad in wood and surrounded by windows that look onto the woods and lake, the tub area is the ultimate retreat. “The family includes many children, so this space is a soothing refuge for the mother to escape to,” says Webb.

here’s caviar, there’s uni, and then there’s white truffles. Once known as the “diamond of the kitchen,” this petite tuber packs a punch far larger than its physical size. Just a few shavings can instantly transform pasta from ordinary to resplendent. And, since they are sometimes known  as Piedmont or Alba truffles, there’s only one place in the world to visit if you’ve become intoxicated by their heavenly aroma.  As any truffle lover knows, the season for the white varieties is exceedingly short. This year, the International Alba White Truffle Fair will be held from October 9 to December 5. The highlight of the fair is always the Alba White Truffle World Market, where visitors can purchase truffles from the celebrated hunters of the nearby Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato  forests.  Another popular attraction is  The Alba Truffle Show, where chefs from around the world cook unique dishes using this “white gold” as their centerpiece.   After you’ve eaten your fair share of  truffled  pasta, pizza, and maybe even ice cream, take a few days to decompress in one of the stellar hotels located nearby. One of the best is Castello di Guarene, a historic, 18th-century palace that has been converted into an exclusive 15-room  bolthole.  Aside from lavish guest suites, it also has a grotto-style pool carved directly out of the rocks, a lush garden maze to wander, and a restaurant regarded as one of the best in the region. And, if you still haven’t satisfied your truffle craving, you’re in luck: the hotel can organize hunts for the elusive tuber with a guide and truffle-hunting dog. Those looking for the most authentic experience should ask for a nighttime search. While it’s certainly more challenging, it’s actually the ideal time to find these rare “diamonds.”

here’s never a bad time to visit this picturesque corner of northern California, but the region sparkles brightest  during harvest season, from August to October. This is “crush” time, when the vineyards are alive with workers plucking fat grapes to be turned into a future bottle of cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir.   The region also hosts everything from music festivals to grape stomps to harvest parties during this celebratory season. One of the most anticipated events is BottleRock Napa Valley, a three-day extravaganza with live music, local food, craft brews, and plenty of wine that takes place from September 3 through 5 this year. If you’re looking for something lower key, however, Napa’s harvest parties and tastings are a more intimate way to learn about wines from a specific vineyard. One of our favorite producers, Robert Biale Vineyards, hosts monthly evening tastings during harvest season. Oenophiles will get to sample everything from zinfandels to petite  sirahs  while winemaker Tres Goetting describes the nuances of each wine.  When it’s time to bed down for the night, Napa Valley offers an embarrassment of riches when it comes to luxury properties. But two stand out from the pack: the recently reopened, food lover’s heaven of Meadowood and the refined and French-influenced Auberge du Soleil. Both properties belong to  the  Relais & Châteaux group, whose hotels are known not only for their high level  of service, but top-flight food as well. And they’re both especially ideal for wine lovers: Meadowood boasts a bevy of wine classes at the hotel’s Learning Center and can even provide an expert to lead a guided winery tour. Auberge can curate a three-day tasting bonanza, which includes private tastings, tours, and VIP access to some of the area’s most notable winery estates.

ew England may not have beaches like the Caribbean or towering mountains like the American West, but you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere on Earth more beautiful during the fall season. The region’s trees erupt in a rainbow of colors come autumn, and there is nowhere with a more beautiful selection than Vermont.   The Green Mountain State is  actually  composed of 75-percent forest and holds the honor of having the most maple trees in the country.  You don’t even need to get out of your car; there are plenty of scenic byways to drink in the colorful surroundings, with town after charming town scattered along the route.  But, of course, part of the magic of the changing leaves is to surround yourself in them. For that, we recommend heading to... a ski resort! An unconventional choice at first glance, but many of Vermont’s famed mountains, like  Mount Mansfield in Stowe, offer gondola rides in the off-season for a spectacular view of the changing colors.  Vermont is also home to one of the most famed luxury resorts in the country,  Twin Farms. The property, located on  300 serene acres, is known not only for its attentive staff, but a wide range of  on-site  activities, superb farm-to-table cuisine, and guest suites that are both luxurious and unique (there’s even a treehouse-themed room). Fall is high season here, with plenty of options for experiencing the splendor of the leaves. Guests can do everything from taking a guided walk through the property while making pit stops for lunch, to borrowing cruiser bikes for a scenic, 10-mile ride to the nearby town of Woodstock.

Ken Fulk is Miami’s current king of hospitality interiors.

/noteworthy

WAKING UP MIAMI Between glamorous beachfront parties and pulsating nightclubs, nobody takes Miami by storm quite like Ken Fulk. The legendary interior designer, known for his bold choices and bon vivant attitude, has become the city’s hospitality hitmaker with three recently launched projects that are sweeping the Miami’s nightlife scene. The first project to make its debut was Pharrell and David Grutman’s The Goodtime Hotel, a massive lifestyle-infused hot spot. “It was an immersive way to get involved in Miami. It came from such a positive place, even while going through the last year,” says Fulk. “It’s really meant to have that reflection of the golden age of Miami. ” His other significant additions to the Miami scene are Miami Carbone and ZZ Sushi Bar. Carbone was put together in just a few months thanks to Fulk’s extensive working relationship with the restaurateurs’ proprietors, the Major Food Group. “It was really about starting with a narrative,” explains Fulk. “I wanted it to feel decadent and luxe. It’s like Maria Callas woke up with Frank Sinatra in a suite on the Grand Canal. It’s an over-the-top, posh place.” 59 BY TIM LATTERNER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRENDAN MAININI LIFESTYLES OF SOUTH FLORIDA

The Design District’s culinary quest tastes like a Michelin star.

B

ecause luxury shopping marathons require refuels between boutiques, it’s fitting that Miami’s Design District has nurtured a curated culinary brood. COTE Korean Steakhouse, Itamae, ZZ’s Club, and Okami now join Pharrell Williams’ romantic Swan, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, and Mandolin Aegean Bistro for the enclave’s burgeoning slate of jetset chow and cocktails. So perhaps it’s no coincidence of design that entering COTE through a lustrous and welcoming pink tunnel leads one to the metaphorical birth of the restaurant’s Korean steakhouse vibe, where Korean-style BBQ and American steakhouse heritage come together to make an innovative culinary baby. This restaurateur Simon Kim is clever. “Miami’s sunshine, diversity, and booming restaurant scene,” Kim says, were irresistable. “We’re honored to call the Design District our second home.” COTE, the Miami outpost of its single Michelin-starred Manhattanite sister, celebrates Goguryeo-era rustic fire cooking, when Koreans invented bulgogi, literally “fire meat.” But unlike Benihana, the COTE experience is dark, sexy, and confident. Black as a nightclub, the stunning room piques the senses with downbeat house music and shocks of colorful lighting. The dry aging meat locker, where 45- to 100-day controlled decomposition occurs,

is non-subtly bathed in blood red hues. Walls of floor-to-ceiling dowels, juxtaposed just so, envelope the perimeters with rays of gold bullion. The commanding horseshoe-shaped bar shines a Ferrari yellow. At said standing bar, order the Chicken Nuggets and you will be thrilled. These should be paired with premier cru Champagne slowly decanted from a magnum. At the minimalist table, the grandeur of the COTE experience is where rubber meets the road. Two tiers of tasting menus, each containing USDA Prime and American Wagyu cuts of beef, make ordering a snap, or go rogue and order a la carte. Order the Butcher’s Feast, a plethora of cubed ribeye, flatiron, and hanger steak, plus marinated short rib called galbi. What happens next is a miraculous COTE-centric orchestration — meats, garnishes, stews, and side dishes are served on butcher blocks and heavy gold metal bowls. Spicy kimchi, savory dwen-jang, savory egg soufflé; it is, quite simply, all delicious. No less than four servers, managers, and sommeliers take turns prepping your protein. It’s a mesmerizing ballet. The meal ends with soft-serve vanilla ice cream drizzled with soy sauce caramel. Like COTE, it is deceptively complex, cloaked in minimalism, and commands an audience. Heading for the exit, it’s time again to bathe in the wondrous luminosity of the tunnel and resume shopping, Design District style.

A former Methodist church repurposed as a multidisciplinary space may be the greatest example of how the arts can change a community. BY JUDY D’MELLO

I

t has often been said that art spaces are our new places of worship. A literal version of this intriguing notion stands in Sag Harbor, N.Y., where a former Methodist church, built in 1832, has been repurposed as a vibrant nonprofit center for creativity. Simply called “The Church,” the 12,000-square-foot, white clapboard building near the center of the village is the latest salvation project of the acclaimed artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik, longtime residents of Sag Harbor. For many, The Church is the manifestation of the old adage “art is not a thing; it’s a way.” Far from a traditional white cube gallery space, The Church boasts architectural features such as a Greek Revival entry, 20-foot-high unadorned windows, and a restored belfry that includes the original church bell. Meticulously repurposed by Sag Harbor architect Lee Skolnick, the interior is all drama. Exposed original rafters in the main sanctuary highlight the space’s divine origins. A mezzanine practically floats between the stone floor and the soaring roof trusses in the main gallery. Various staircases connect the building’s three stories, as does an ultramodern glass elevator, offering access to various creator spaces, exhibition galleries, and a resource library. At the rear of the building, a modest cube-like, two-story unit offers on-site accommodations for the artists-in-residence

program while a lovely public garden extends to one side. But perhaps the most exquisite representation of this past-meets-present vibe is the portraits of notable local artists — Betty Friedan, Langston Hughes, and Herman Melville, to name a few — painted by Fischl, transferred to translucent film, and mounted within the panes. They serve as a modern interpretation of traditional stained-glass windows. Shuttered as a religious institution in 2008, the building was first acquired by a real estate developer, then an interior designer, and next by a couple with dreams of building their fantasy home. Alas, they fell out of love and parted ways before their luxury abode was realized. Property developers with condominium dreams continued to circle and speculate. Celebrities eyed it with keen interest but were daunted by the scale of necessary renovations. It was then, in 2018, that Fischl and Gornik stepped in and bought the sacred digs because they were, according to a New York Times article, “loath to see yet another local building become an opulent private home.” The couple is known in this Great Gatsby land as dedicated crusaders of preserving their historic village, once known as a haven for artists and writers. iven a chance to either connect through Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca or take the nearly three-hour drive from Morocco’s largest city to Marrakesh, most adventurers opt for the smooth ride down the A3 highway that connects two of this kingdom’s most important cities. The reason is obvious. There is an undulated sense of discovery that starts with the coastal plains of “Casa,” as the locals call it, and ends at the tranquil foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. The route crosses a rural world, a captivating one marked by an intriguing landscape and gently rolling countryside that’s at once lush and mysterious. To some, this collocation is foreboding. To others unfazed by its collision, this Moroccan tapestry is a celebration of local complexity, all woven into a splendor that’s uniquely its own. The same can be said about the enchanting and regal La Mamounia, arguably Morocco’s most revered hotel. A quiet and ultra-

Opened in 1923, this Art Deco luxury resort’s instantly recogonizable lobby was featured extensively in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 film The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Not one to rest on its laurels, the recent and muchlauded renovation, overseen by designers Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, has heralded another chapter for this iconic property.

sophisticated oasis surrounded by roaring sounds of zipping scooters and calls to prayer, La Mamounia is a beautifully resolved study in contrast. Once owned by Prince Mamoun in the 18th century and then reopened in the 1920s as a hotel, La Mamounia’s stunning blend of Art Deco and Orientalist décor has seduced the likes of Winston Churchill, who invited Franklin Delano Roosevelt here, and Alfred Hitchcock, who shot scenes from The Man Who Knew Too Much in the hotel’s lobby. The list of celebs who appreciated its long history includes the Rolling Stones, Charlie Chaplin, Sharon Stone, and Yves Saint Laurent, to name but a few. Then and now, the hotel’s stately energy is exciting yet soothing, reassuring in its steadfast commitment to service. At its core, La Mamounia is Moroccan, yet in its out-of-this-world sophistication, it transcends any attributions. Not one to rest on its laurels, the recent and much-lauded renovation, overseen by designers Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, has heralded another chapter for this iconic property. Its 20 acres of orange trees, rose bushes, cacti, palms, and olive trees serve as an unforgettable canvas to the modern Moroccan design that commands La Mamounia’s latest iteration seeking to improve on perfection. This blueprint moved the iconic Churchill Bar, now Le Churchill, near the new intimate cinema and a souring, cupola-capped tea salon. The other changes include the new Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s L’A siatique and a revamped L’Italien, the Salon de Thé par Pierre Hermé, and the intimate L’Œnothèque, a chef’s table of sorts for 12 oenophiles who can delight in 2,000 rare wines that make up this vault. Some have suggested that La Mamounia’s location was the sole reason for this grand dame of hospitality’s reign over all the other big-name properties that have recently opened their doors in the “Rose City.” Yes, the hotel is conveniently located just two minutes from the Koutoubia gardens, which give on to Jemaa el-Fna, the main square of the old town. And yes, there is an undeniable fairytale-like quality to the Moorish opulence here. But, just like that journey from Casablanca to Marrakesh across the rural areas, La Mamounia’s most heartwarming statements may be her most modest... like the ceremonial greeting of milk flavored with almonds and a handful of fresh dates given to everyone checking in, proving that small and unexpected things make a lasting impression. / 65 L IF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA

girl on fire

What does crypto currency and Miami’s growing place in its evolution have in common? Otmara Marrero, a budding home-grown actress, may be the answer. BY DIRK DESOUZA / PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIFFANI MORENO

Otmara Marrero’s acting chops have more than eclipsed her Jolie-like looks.

F

rom the moment I met her, I knew she was the next Angelina Jolie,” says Miami casting director Ed Arenas about his “it girl” progeny-byproxy, actress Otmara Marrero. And as the digital dreamscape of Bitcoin 2021 was in full swing in Miami the day we chatted, Marrero’s prescient 2016 crypto connection five years prior proved a killer in the day’s zeitgeist. Her portrayal of the brilliant, tormented alt-heroine character Izzy Morales in Netflix’s series “Startup” was spot on. Izzy’s invention of GenCoin, a cryptocurrency-slash-banking platform created from scratch, fueled by cold beer and nicotine, was an eerie reflection of the sinister tech world. Today, with bitcoin halved from its highs and season four of “Startup” in limbo, Marrero remains one to watch. At once mesmerizing and brooding, the Cuban American’s acting chops have more than eclipsed her Jolielike eyes and bee-stung lips. The former ballet-dancer-turned-Miami-Marlinscheerleader catapulted from the small parts of “bartender” in USA Network’s “Graceland” and “sexy mourner” in HBO’s “Ballers” to Netflix Top 10 fan favorite. Since “Startup,” the Hialeah-raised Marrero starred in a love story, Clementine, and followed that with the primetime series “Connecting,” an ensemble comedy about relationships in the time of Zoom. “All the filming was done remotely from my house, and even after I was cast, I hadn’t met any of my castmates, directors, or producers. They sent me set decorations, computers, tripods, and cameras, and I did my own hair, makeup, and lighting. It was a lot to think about,” she shared about the production. Next up, she will co-star in the film 13 Reasons Why. But a recurring role on “New York Undercover” or a surprise season four of “Startup” could also be in the cards. That’s the thing about Marrero, who effortlessly swings between network primetime and indie features, she keeps audiences wanting more.

When it comes to golf, playing the most vaunted private clubs may be worth the price.

T

he National Golf Foundation says approximately 25 million people currently play golf at private clubs, public courses, and resort courses. And while each category has its share of great experiences, it’s golf’s most exclusive private clubs that define the sport. The definition of “exclusive,’ ’ however, is a moving target. It can mean an initial membership fee of above $500,000, like at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton. Or, it can mean prestige, as with clubs such as Augusta National Golf Club, Seminole Golf Club, and Shinnecock Hills. Each is said to have a membership price tag that begins around $250,000. But the actual value of membership is in the eye of the beholder. At Augusta National, it’s a bargain at any price, because getting “in” is by invitation only, and, with membership limited to 300, spots for new members are rare, to say the least. The haunting pine barrens of New Jersey are an unlikely place to find what is generally considered the country’s best golf course, but that’s where rugged Pine Valley was built in 1913 by founders George Crump and Harry S. Colt. The club opens its gates annually for the final round of its fall Crump Cup tournament, but even then, access is limited. The club did make news earlier this year when it announced removing “gender-specific’’ language from its bylaws.

If you’re looking to golf with celebrities, try Seminole Golf Club and The Grove X XIII in Florida; that’s if you can get past the front door. Each club guards its grounds like a Florida panther protects her cubs. However, Seminole President Jimmy Dunne recently peeled back the curtain by allowing two televised events, including the 2021 Walker Cup. Some 20 miles north of Seminole, The Grove X XIII is the newest addition on the exclusive club list. Even if it wasn’t owned by NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan (X XIII, get it?), the club would still make the cut because of its outstanding Bobby Weed design that includes a 20-acre practice facility — touted as the world’s best — and high-profile members such as PGA superstar Phil Mickelson. Weed created a pristine course with a double-helix routing that can be played in four, nine-hole combinations, thus allowing for fast play. The ultra-modern clubhouse adds to The Grove X XIII’s posh aura. Weed said his inspiration for The Grove X XIII came from Shinnecock Hills, which opened in 1891. That invitation-only club is among the most guarded in the country when it comes to its membership, but the course is the epitome of early American design. How good is Shinnecock? The U.S. Open has been played there five times over the past three centuries, with a sixth scheduled for 2026. Now that’s some really exclusive company.

From top: a peek at Michael Jordan’s The Grove XXIII; the 17th Hole at Sebonack Golf Club in New York.

Monica Betancourt Group - #1 Small Team in Closings at BHHS EWM Realty How many years have you been a Realtor? It’s been 15 years since I began my career as a Realtor, and I found my own “Forever Home” – professionally speaking – at Berkshire Hathaway EWM Realty in Coral Gables. What is your favorite property sold and/or work experience? The most memorable property I’ve ever sold is a one-of-a-kind, custombuilt and -designed Caribbean estate with a sunken rainforest-inspired garden and a tropical fruit orchard, all surrounded by striking natural coral rock walls. Set on 1.5 acres, it’s located on a beautiful stretch of historic Old Cutler Road, across from the world-renowned Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The residence is a yesteryear Florida masterpiece and it was a privilege to find the perfect family to make it their home. Do you work mostly with sellers or buyers? My team works equally with both Sellers and Buyers, and we take pride in providing our signature “Top 1% Experience” to all of our clients at every price point. What sets you apart from other Realtors? I know from my own experience and from all of my clients over the years that a residential real estate transaction is rarely just a business deal. It’s personal and emotional. My team and I, therefore, take the time from the outset to really get to know our clients’ personal, cultural, and professional perspectives so that we can meaningfully customize a strategy for the smooth and satisfying sale or purchase of their property.

What’s the biggest real estate trend you are seeing right now? There’s no missing the fact that people are reprioritizing the features they value most in a home, whether it’s a single-family property or a condo. Buyers are very interested in having appropriate space for an office, as well as plentiful recreational onsite amenities. Location is the other side of this coin. As remote work has become so prevalent in the past year, we’ve seen a big increase in people taking advantage of their newfound freedom by moving to Miami for our many financial and lifestyle benefits. Where do you work? Coral Gables, South Miami, High Pines, and Pinecrest are my most active locations, but I also regularly represent clients in Palmetto Bay, Coconut Grove, Ponce Davis, and The Beaches. Farther afield, I’ve also worked with Sellers and Buyers in the Florida Keys, Palm Beach, the Redlands, and even in Orlando – or as we call it here in Miami, “up north.” Do you work mostly with single-family homes, condominiums or land? Given the nature of the neighborhoods where I am most active, the majority of my sales are for single-family homes. Nonetheless, condos, townhomes, and undeveloped land have always made regular appearances on my roster of exclusive listings. If it’s anywhere in Greater Miami and it’s residential, give me a call! Bringing “Luck” to Buying and Selling Your Home How many years have you been a realtor? Over 19 years. What is your favorite property sold? My favorite sale was the purchase of a developer unit at Prive in Aventura. My customers were buyers from NYC and were totally enamored by this ultra-luxury condo. Located on a private, 8 acre island in Aventura, the views from this unit are spectacular, the finishes are amazing, and the building has every amenity imaginable. We negotiated a great deal and the excitement from my customers was contagious. Do you work mostly with buyers or sellers? I tend to work more with sellers, but I still love working with my buyers. I continually stay in touch with my book of customers, who often need future real estate services, including referrals. I have a multi-lingual team of agents, who help ensure that all of our customers receive excellent service. What sets you apart from other realtors? As a South Florida native, my extensive expertise in local real estate and my vast network of relationships not only continually grows my customer base, but also helps me connect others for related services. What’s the biggest real estate trend right now? The demand for primary residences has been staggering. The number of new residents that have moved here is a huge trend as well. What neighborhood do you specialize in? I specialize in the Aventura/Sunny Isles Beach areas and also work from Miami Beach to Delray Beach/Boyton Beach. Do you work mostly with single-family homes, condominiums or land? Since Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach are predominantly condos, I frequently work with those buildings, and I love selling homes in all of South Florida.

SPEAK easy

The father of two freakishly attractive children and Cindy Crawford’s husband, Rande Gerber, is as handsome as he is industrious and counts Midnight Oil, Gerber Group, and the stalwart spirit of choice, Casamigos Tequila, as his business endeavors. We caught up with the multitasking tycoon, who recently added a Miami home to his real estate portfolio, to fill us in on his dreams, secret talents, and the best looking member of his family. BY ANETTA NOWOSIELSKA / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN BOWEN SMITH

When you’re not working, you are... Hanging out with my family biking, hiking, playing sports. Anything outside. What are you reading currently? “Greenlights” by Matthew McConaughey. What’s the first concert you attended? Aerosmith and Skid Row. Favorite word? Thank you! First job? Selling door mats at a flea market. Favorite secret spot in Miami? Lucali is one and the others are secrets. What is your most-used emoji?  If you could win an Olympic medal for any sport, real or fake, what would it be? Cornhole. What was your favorite subject in school? Philosophy. What’s your hidden talent? Grill master. If you had to eat one thing for every meal going forward, it would be... Pizza. If someone were to play you in a movie, who would you want it to be? My son, Presley. If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, whose would they be? Elon Musk the day he goes to space. To whom did you send your last text to? My daughter, Kaia. What’s one thing about you that surprises people? Ask my wife. Who was your biggest teacher? My dad. Whose wardrobe would you want to steal? I’m easy, I mostly wear T-shirts and jeans. What have you done that gave you extreme happiness? Surfed Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch with my family. Old-school watch or time on your phone? Old-school watch. What does success mean to you? Freedom to make decisions not based on money. Your happy place? Home. Boat or plane? Boat. If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time? I don’t sleep much, and I spend late nights thinking and coming up with new ideas. At what job would you be terrible? Accountant. What’s something you say you’ll do, but never will? Retire. If you were given a chance to explore the oceans, go to outer space, or visit 50 different countries, you’d choose... Outer space. Favorite movie? Brian’s Song. Who is the best looking member of your family? Not me. / 88 L IF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA
