‘is the season

Remember when all you wanted for Christmas was a bicycle, the latest Barbie with a few new outfits and an art set. Fast forward to adulthood and it’s pretty much the same list. Instead of a bright red or pink bicycle, it’s a Vespa or a beautiful cruiser like the one on the opposite page by Moynat. Barbie isn’t a doll, but you and those outfits are a few pieces from your favorite designer Resort collections. The art set has been replaced with an assortment of lipsticks and nail lacquers. Just because you’re a little older doesn’t mean your list has to change.

Editor’s Desk

This is our second Holiday Gift Guide and we did it a little different. We assembled it from the prospectus that the big ticket items were a given [the car, jewelry, luxe vacation, fur and cash.] Instead, we went shopping for the the people in our lives that are always there helping and caring for us [the trainer, babysitter, parents, makeup artist, co-worker...] We also, had the opportunity of spending a little time in Napa Valley this year and that inspired us to talk about Sparkling Wines. The holiday season is packed with celebrating and champagne or sparkling plays a huge part in holiday celebrations. So what’s on my Christmas Wish List? That’s easy...I think. I want a pair of black Saint Laurent Tribute Sandals [size8], a MacBook Pro [13inch],Chanel Cosmic and Magic nail colour, a pair of leopard slippers [I work from home, so these are my everyday shoes], additions to my fashion book library, new gold studs, medium gold hoops and a puppy. I know I listed a puppy last year. I’m getting closer to making that a reality. I’ve narrowed it down to either a Yorkie named Winnie or Shih Tzu named Chloe. The minute I get her, I’m going to spoil her with some of the goodies listed in our doggie gift guide. Enjoy the issue and we hope you have a blessed and safe holiday season. Thank you to everyone that has helped us, you will never know how much we appreciate you. See you next year.

Tis the season for the LBD. Scratch that. Every season is LBD season. However, when the holidays roll around, it seems the LBD sees more action. Every woman owns at least one. Personally, I own LBDs for different occasions...Cocktail, formal, lunch with the girls, a questionable date and the demure look. Why the LBD? It’s safe, comfortable and in our minds, it hides the evidence of having enjoyed every buffet we hit during the season. Accessorizing the LBD let;s your personality show. Color is great, but personally, I think it looks its chicest with black accessories. How are you wearing your LBD this season?

ON

MOTCOMB in London isn’t a store, shop or boutique. It’s an atelier for couture evening wear. The concept is so simple, yet so chic. It’s a place where the most beautiful dresses of the season gather. If clothes had reunions, this is where they would purposely meet. We discovered this fantasy land like we do most of our boutiques, the internet. I will admit, when we read the name, we thought it was a hot new design talent. The image that accompanied the name was a thumbnail of an incredible gown. One click and we discovered, ON Motcomb wasn’t a new designer, but a boutique with a defined sales strategy...eveningwear. In the modern age of shopping, there are some that will swear the internet has taken over. Not so. As long as there are people who appreciate fine craftsmanship, there will always be places like ON Motcomb. The images of this beautiful atelier, [that’s how we choose to refer to it] had us wanting to jet off to London immediately. Located in the prestigious neighborhood of Begravia, London, it is surrounded by several established and international brands. The store is a little deceiving from the exterior, because on first glance, it resembles an art gallery. How apropos, most consider the gowns they offer to be works of art. Once inside, the couture pieces gradually reveal themselves amongst the beautiful white screens. The space was designed by Ammar Bashier in collaboration with Flower Michelin Architects. It’s minimalist, but warm, which allows the gowns to speak to the clients. The oversized fitting rooms are breathtaking complete with full-sized mirrors to see both the front and back with ease. ON Motcomb isn’t shopping, it’s a relaxing holiday.

Resort is the teaser and taunter

fashion season. It serves to remind us that our love of Autumn and Winter dressing is short lived. While at the same time, it teases us with an advance peek at the sleek and carefree looks of Spring. The 2014 Resort collections had a few things in common...very feminine dresses, jumpsuits, city shorts, great fitting trousers, colorful accessories and chunky jewelry. Lots of color. We celebrate this teaser season with three standout collections. Lanvin, Zuhair Murad and Maison Rabih Kayrouz.

REPORT

GLOVES

the any season accessory “A lady never leaves home without gloves.” Words spoken by most grandmothers and mothers from certain eras. Gloves used to be the mark of a well-bred woman. Today, gloves are the sign of a very stylish and confident woman...enter Olivia Pope from Scandal. Ladylike dressing is a trend that never grows old. It’s that style of dressing that always seems to reinvent itself for the modern woman. This time when it came in, the standout accessory was gloves. No longer merely a necessity for cold weather, gloves are now the chic fashion must have. To showcase this trend we have a few pairs from Gaspar Gloves. Gaspar Gloves have been providing gloves for the entertainment industry as well as the chic elite for decades. Each pair is created by hand and made from supple leathers with the trims ranging from fur to buttons to the more decadent zippers and ties. Whatever your mood, Gaspar has a pair of gloves for all of your personalities.

CABINET

...the holiday wardrobe essential Red lips are the one accessory that work with every holiday look. The red lip is every woman’s makeup secret. It’s powerful, draws attention, hypnotizes and energizes. It can go from casual to formal in a couple of strokes. The right red lip color can change your whole attitude. Let’s clarify...there is no one set red lipstick. There’s your favorite red lip color and then there’s your favorite orangy red, blue red and burgundy red. And then there’s your matte and shiny. What’s the best way to apply red lip color? By brush or straight from the bullet. My personal favorite is from the bullet, like my mom and grandma. Leaving the brush application for the end of the tube. Then there are those who blot after the first layer and apply another layer with a brush. It’s up to you. For something a little more playful, try a gloss or liquid lipstick or even a glaze. We suggest building your red lip wardrobe just like your LBD collection...one for all occasions and moods.

Michael Elliot Founder/Owner of Hammer and Nails

HAMMER AND NAILS

We love men, however the nail salon isn’t where we want to see them. The same goes for them. There isn’t a man alive who really wants to be in a female nail salon. As women, we have a tendancy to use this relaxation ritual, as a time to catch up with friends, meet new ones and be nosey. Guys are not like that. If it’s a relaxing activity, that’s what they do...relax. HAMMER AND NAILS, located on Melrose, is the first men only, nail salon in Los Angeles. Not to be mistaken for it’s female counterpart, this salon shows no signs of female customers. The decor screams “Men Only.” There’s no unsightly nail polish board or rack. Instead there are large flat screen televisions complete with premium sports channels and complimentary beverages. This place is so cool. Each station is an oversized distressed leather club chair with nail head trim, a remote control and headphones. The walls are covered in a warm grey paint and there are antique signs, framed hammers, old car parts and a leather punching bag. Guy stuff. Hammer and Nails is the brain child of Michael Elliot. “When I first visited a traditional nail salon to treat my callused hands and feet, I felt completely like a fish out of water in a predominantly female environment,” says Elliot. “I immediately saw a need for a nail shop that caters to businessmen, athletes, mechanics and men who take proper care of their appearance and hygiene. We’ve created a first-ofits-kind environment that is welcoming to all men by catering to their specific needs in a super-cool environment.” HAMMER & NAILS offer custom MANicures and pedicures, as well as their signature “Repair” MANicures and pedicures for those who need a little extra hygienic attention. These treatments include nail trimming and shaping, moisturizing, callus removal, paraffin treatment and massages all designed with a man’s needs in mind. Prices range from $25 to a total package of salon treatments for $80.

Best perk of owning a salon?

Do you think a woman really pays attention to how a man grooms his hands and feet?

Yes. Women care about the way their men look and, even though it isn’t talked about as much, men certainly care about their appearance and hygiene as well. There’s a huge untapped market of men around the nation looking for a salon and products to help them take better care of themselves, and we’re providing the solution.

Dinner with some great conversation and a movie. Free manicures.

Are men as obsessed with grooming products as women?

What’s next?

Buffed or clear polish?

I ask everyone this question, what shade of pink best describes you and why?

No, but mens’ interest in grooming products is definitely surging. Buffed, but not shiny.

What’s your basic grooming regimen? I begin with washing my face with Neutrogena Men’s Face Wash and some Neutrogena Men’s Face Scrub. I then shave my face and trim my mustache and goatee, which I do every day. I also shave my head, which I do every other day.

I envision HAMMER & NAILS salons around the country. I’d like to open up a few shops next year. We will also begin developing and selling luxury HAMMER & NAILS men’s products in the near future.

Coral. I think it’s the warmest of the shades of pink and I like to think warmth is something I exude.

TINY BUBBLES

Celebrating with Sparkling Wines from Napa It’s the season of celebrating and you want to serve something different this year for your holiday party. Try a Sparkling Wine from Napa Valley. Napa Valley is fondly referred to as California Wine Country. It’s home to some amazing vineyards that produce outstanding sparkling wines. First let’s find out what sparkling wine isn’t. It’s not champagne. In order for sparkling wine to be called champagne, it has to have been produced or made in the Champagne Region of France. However, most wine making regions have their own version of this process, as well as their own moniker. In other parts of France, outside of Champagne, it’s call Vins Mousseux. In Italy, is called Prosecco or Spumante. In Germany, it’s Sekt and the Spanish refer to theirs as Cava. Simply put, Champagne comes from the Champagne Region of France and Sparkling Wine comes from somewhere else. The process is basically the same, but it’s the location that changes the moniker. So how do you select the right Sparkling Wine for your party? It’s all up to you. Let us offer a few suggestions. An intimate dinner for two, try Domaine Chandon Sparkling Red. The beautiful red color conjours up romantic notions for the evening. If you’ve been tasked with hosting the book club’s holiday party, stock up on Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs. Then impress them with the details of this wine. Your best friend’s tree trimming party, said bring a pink ornament. Instead bring Domaine Carneros Brut Rose` with a pink bow. Dinner with the family requires a plenty of Mumm Napa Brut Prestige to pair with mom’s turkey. If you’ve always served sparkiling apple cider and really want something different, then stock up on Fre Brut. Your guests will be impressed when you serve Mimosas made with Fre Alcohol Free Brut this year at brunch instead of your regular sparkling apple cider. It’s your party...fill it with lots of tiny bubbles.

Serving Suggestions

Mumm Napa Prestige Brut 102

mummnapa.com

Sparkling Wine is very good before a meal, Dishes that have inherent toasty character, just like but it also pairs well with several foods. Here the sparkling wine itself. are a few serving tips from MUMM NAPA. Bubbly Works Well With:

Counterbalancing salt, moderate heat, richness/ cream, "fat" (grease, butter, deep fry oil.)

Fruit forward/New World styles work well with dishes that imply sweetness or have lightly sweet condiments or treatments Nuts (without husks/skins)

Can supplant the need for highlighting acid (citrus) Cured olives. with fish, shellfish, sushi, sashimi. Traditionally difficult foods to match, like eggs, Wonderful stage/platform to show off certain dishes soups, etc. (cooked shellfish, abalone, raw oysters, some caviar.) Other intriguing foods like polenta, pesto, hummus Provides a rare opportunity to match foods that and baba ghanoush and Middle Eastern food in are tart (citrus, vinegars, tart fruit, pomegranate, general. kumquat) as well as dill, capers, tomatoes, leeks. As a match with many Asian cuisines (Japanese: sushi, tempura, gyoza; Chinese: many deep-fried dishes, seafood dishes, some poultry; Thai: Thai crepes, fish cakes, some coconut milk based curries; Indian: samosas, papadams..etc).

Bubbly doesn't work well with:

Extremes. Dishes that are too rich squash its subtlety. Dishes that are too spicy eviscerate the wine. Dishes that are too flavorful lose the nuances of the wine.

Overall, it’s best with the fruit driven new world Dishes that are sweet (unless paired with sweeter styles like Extra Dry or Demi Sec) styles. Cheese. Especially hard cheeses like Parmesan, really Chocolate. rich cheeses like triple crême St. Andre and salty It may taste metallic with some fishy fish, some cheeses. stronger flavors and bitter vegetables. Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs 104

Schramsberg.com

Domaine Carneros Brut Rose This lovely and serious wine exhibits luscious aromas of blackberry, raspberry with notes of apricot, tangerine and rose petals layered on top. A wine of more weight than normally found in a RosĂŠ, it will grace an entire meal with aplomb. Definitely worth aging if you are willing to wait.

Domaine Chandon Sparkling Red Unlike most sparkling wines, this cuvĂŠe begins with Pinot Noir and Zinfandel still wines that have been fermented on the skins, providing the flavor and body of a still wine. It then undergoes second fermentation in the bottle, so it possesses the refreshing characters of a sparkling wine. Chandon Sparkling Red excites the palate with rich and concentrated flavors of plum, black cherry, sweet cranberry with hints of Bergamot and spice. The structure of this wine helps it pair perfectly with more foods than traditional sparklers, bolder meats for instance.

Fre Brut

Tasting Notes

A steady bead of pinpoint bubbles introduces a wonderfully fresh, fragrant aroma of green apples and ripe pears with hints of berry and peach. The crisp, fruity flavors, suggesting apple and strawberry, display an admirable balance of refreshing acidity and residual sweetness. The finish is pleasingly refreshing and dry, inviting a second delicious glass. Fre Sparkling Brut is not only a perfect toasting and celebration beverage, it also beautifully compliments food, particularly appetizers, fish and poultry dishes, spicy Asian cuisines, and light desserts.

Mumm Napa Prestige Brut

Brut Prestige displays a fine, persistent bead (the flow of bubbles from the bottom to the top of the glass) and bright citrus, red apple, stonefruit and creamy vanilla aromas, with hints of toast, honey and gingerbread spice. Its vibrant citrus, apple and melon flavors are balanced by fresh acidity and a rich, lingering finish. This elegant, beautifully structured sparkling wine makes an ideal aperitif and a delightful match for seafood, poultry and vegetarian dishes.

Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs

The 2007 Blanc de Noirs has lively aromas of guava and fresh peach that lead the way to subtle aromas reminiscent of a briar berry patch. The fruitful nose is complemented by warm almond and salted toffee. The palate is generous and bursting with flavors of Rainier cherry and fresh watermelon, followed by baked orange and fresh sourdough bread. The finish is long and lingering with a snappy acidity.

STEP ONE: After your wine is chilled, be sure to wipe it clean of any moisture so it doesn’t drip on your table or, moreover, your guests. (Don’t try to open a bottle that is not properly chilled.) STEP TWO: Place your thumb over the cork and leave it there through the opening. Slant bottle at a 45 degree angle and point it away from yourself and others before loosening the wire hood. Keep your thumb pressure on the cork as it may start to move as soon as the wire is loosened. STEP THREE: With one hand, hold the cork firmly between the palm and forefinger. We recommend covering the cork with your thumb or a towel. With the other hand, twist the bottle slowly in one direction until pressure pushes the cork out. This should process a slight ‘hiss’ rather than a loud ‘pop’. (Never use a corkscrew to open sparkling wine.) STEP FOUR: After the cork is removed, let the bottle remain at 45 degree angle for a few seconds, to prevent overflow. STEP FIVE: It is correct to pour sparkling wine in either one or two pours. If you choose two pours, pour one glass at a time, allowing the mousse to subside. In flute glasses, leave at least an inch from the top.

What is Fre Brut Alcohol Free Sparkling Wine? Fre Brut is the first alcohol-removed sparkling wine produced by a major American winery. Remarkably similar in style and quality to a traditional sparkling wine, Fre Brut is the perfect, sophisticated adult alternative beverage for celebrations and other special events. It’s a blend of Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir and dealcoholized using the innovative spinning cone process, this bright, refreshing sparkler is ideal for any occasion requiring good cheer. It can be paired and mixed just like regular sparkling wine. It’s also compliments the main course as well as the dessert. It dresses up the meal or event. It has a modest price point and is a superb alternative to traditional sparkling fruit ciders.
