On June 19, 1968, the Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) was founded as a nonprofit agency to help African Americans and other minorities in the Gulf Coast region secure economic self-reliance, greater political representation and civil rights.

In November, Barbara Jordan of Houston and Andrew Young of Atlanta become the first black Congressional representatives elected from the U.S. South since 1898.

HAUL receives a 12-year commitment of $100,000 per year from Merrill Lynch supporting a mentoring and educational program (Scholarship Builder Program) for low-income children starting in 1st grade. All students who completed the program received full 4-year scholarships to college.

HAUL hires its first female chief executive officer, Sylvia K. Brooks. Under her leadership, the Urban League moved into a “Home of Their Own” in downtown location—October 1998.

Hurricane Katrina’s widespread devastation brings thousands of residents from New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf Coast into Houston. HAUL becomes part of a huge, city-wide effort to secure housing, food, clothing and employment for more than 150,000 people.
