The concepts »Six things feel closer« All student teams followed the same basic rules.

Explore the philosophy of »Experience Design« , start from the Why of product use, here relatedness experiences Use the State-of-the-Art report

Employ a short-cycled , iterative process of in-depth explorative analysis, design, and user confrontation; however, insight is more important than acceptance Address all levels of the product, top down from the Why to the How to ensure an aligned concept

Brettchen »I am with you« A breakfast platter for lonely mornings.

Principle:

Awareness of activity, (Expressivity)

Crucial features:

Breakfast is an emotion-laden situation Defamilarization of input, aesthetic transformation (by low resolution) – fuzzy, avoids potentially problematic situations »you shouldn't have beer first in the morning« Captures and transmits the dynamics of the breakfast – haste, hurry, phases of preparation and eating, rhythms (e.g., drinking) Sender has no complete control over how his activity appears. Combined with the fuzziness, the platter itself could be a reason to start a more explicit dialogue – synchronization

Kissen »Leave me a whisper« A pillow, which spills whisper.

Principle:

Expressivity, (Gift Giving)

Crucial features:

Bed or couch as a typical situation where a loved one is especially missed

Poetic, untechnical metaphor of »filling the pillow with whisper«, and release it at will – aesthetics of interaction Without the indicator light, the function of the pillow would be completely disguised except for its user Can be broadened to a one-to-one networked pillow

Blumentopf »I need you here« A flower pot for joined caring.

Principle:

Joint action

Crucial features:

Plants as symbols of life and caring. Neglecting the plant when the partner is away feels like neglecting the partner her or himself Small water reservoir makes it a joint action instead of an automation. The partner at home waters the plant, but the partner away (the one with the »green thumb«) applies the water The direct feedback (i.e., dryness is translated into brightness without any thresholds or further qualification) resembles the fuzzy probing of the dryness of earth (keeps competence in tact, requires learning and adaption)

Schlüsselloch »Peep, honey« A key hole for the dirty.

Principle:

Gift giving, Awareness, (Physicalness)

Crucial features:

Teasing, play, intimacy, while security, privacy, control is given The one-glance-only-feature can initiate a dialogue »send this picture again, honey«, which in turn may by a good starting point for a more »direct exchange« It involves both partners. The sender's control circumvents feelings of being an object Adresses a sensible topic

// Schmeer & Baffi, 2010

hassenzahl // concepts for relatedness experiences

februar 2010

Spiegel »Tracing a touch« A mirror for emotional messages.

Principle:

Expressivity

Crucial features:

Bathroom after having taken a shower is an emotion-laden situation; writing on the mirror is romantic in itself

Light-point design takes up affective requirements (feels less technical, more like being guided by the partner) »Co-construction« (tracing ) is assumed to deepen the feeling. Participants indicated that this might work (concept transfer) Volatile messaging fosters repetition and increase the felt importance of the message.

Principle:

None

Crucial features:

Transformational product – a form of self-help to better get along, prescriptive

Relatedness experiences »Conclusion«

Carefully staged and scripted experiences mediated through interactive products Grounded in the real world, on real concerns of real people

Experience Design takes a humanstic stance. It seeks to replace shortlived fashion with meaning – without being overly practical or dry
