Martinos Italian arrives Martino’s Italian Restaurant is now open at 135 Derby Road. I popped in to take a look at the beautifully refurbished dining room and bar. Owner Murat has an extensive history in Italian Cuisine. He and his two head chefs have decades of experience between them working together to preparing delicious authentic food. Murat told me ‘We pride ourselves in making sure our guests truly enjoy their meal and are treated with the best service. We are so excited to be in our own restaurant and able to offer our favourite dishes to our customers.” This attitude is clearly paying off as they have received some fantastic reviews on their Facebook page: “Amazing food and fabulous service, would highly recommend. Best steak I have had.” “My Fiancé brought me here for a date night absolutely amazing quality food. Great service by them, very polite and friendly. Would definitely recommend, it's a hidden gem in my opinion.”
Highlights of their menu include Gamberetti Picante ‐ King Prawns cooked in white wine, chilli, garlic and tomato sauce and Costolette di Maiale ‐ Pork Ribs cooked in secret homemade barbecue sauce, available as a starter or a main course. As well as traditional Pizza and Pasta their menu includes steak, chicken and fish dishes and plenty of vegetarian options including Vegetable Lasagna, Penne al Forno Verde and Penne Arrabbiata. Martinos also offers a well stocked bar with a carefully selected choice of wines to enjoy with your meal. If you prefer to eat at home then all of their food is also available for home delivery or collection. Pizza and pasta dishes are on special offer each Sunday evening from 5pm‐9.30pm at half price. Welcome to Hasland Magazine
Welcome to our October / November edition.
Another two months have flown by and autumn has now arrived! Well done to all the young people who have received their GCSE / A’Level results during August. It’s been a truly hard year for them and they seem to have thrived nonetheless. We should all be very proud of them. It’s still a very uncertain time for many of our local businesses and for all of us. Thanks to everyone who has advertised in this issue or contributed editorial ‐ it’s not the easiest time to find extra cash or the time to write! To show our appreciation to our local independent businesses, Hasland Magazine has arranged for Hasland to take part in Totally Locally’s FiverFest. This national local shopping event will take place from the 10th ‐ 24th October. Many local businesses will be offering some amazing £5 deals to customers for this two week period. The idea is to showcase everything that they have to offer and to say thanks to customers for their continued support. The message is ‘Spend a Fiver, Grab a Bargain, Support a Local Shop, Feel Good! It’s estimated that if every adult in Hasland alone spent just £5 per week at our local independent businesses it would mean £1.3 million per year going back into the local economy. This could lead to more jobs, a better High Street and a nicer place to live. Please join in and visit the shops, try the offers, see what else they do ‐ you may find some new favourite local businesses! Thanks to LGS Design for helping to sponsor the event by providing an advertising banner and subsidised poster printing. There are some fab competitions to enter this issue; a family ticket to Wheelgate, £25 to spend in the FiverFest and 2 Pomegranate Theatre Tickets are all up for grabs ‐ make sure you enter them all! There are two great articles and some stunning photography from Scott Antcliffe and lots of local news and events to read about. The Hasland Community Hub is now up and running at Hasland WMC. The team are asking for help from our readers to think of a name for the hub ‐ see the competition for details. Hasland’s community spirit has stayed strong through the lockdown ‐ well done to all!
Thanks for reading - Trudy

Spare Thyme Community Allotment Project The Spare Thyme community allotment project at Mill Lane allotments, Grassmoor aims to bring together young& old, male & female, novice & experienced, skilled & unskilled people on a joint owned allotment which is managed cooperatively and harvested on a shared basis. 2020 is our third season and we are looking for like minded people to join in and enjoy the satisfaction of growing our own food. We are now well settled on plot 26. We have a tool shed and a potting shed. We are planting new seeds and seedlings, tending them and harvesting the produce as it grows.
We have more than doubled our holding by taking on the allotment next door and are looking forward to 2 or 3 new members joining us once we emerge from Covid 19 restrictions. We hope to bring more members from the community of Grassland Hasmoor Big Local together to learn new skills and to benefit everyone psychologically, physically and socially. Sparkling in Hasland Angela Goggins, Val Gratton & Val Davies were one of the many small groups and individuals who decided to take part in the Virtual Sparkle & Memory Walk on Saturday 19th September. Sadly the usual huge event involving thousands of fundraisers, which raises funds for Ashgate Hospicecare, was cancelled due to current circumstances. Angela told me about their walk: “We were invited to do our own activities, from dancing, running, cycling or walking. We decided to walk and called ourselves the Hasland Wanderers, fundraising in memory of our dear friends Gladys Gill and Cathryn Bannister. We enjoyed a walk in our local area before it went too dark. Starting from Norwood Avenue we proceeded over to the ‘Washland’, a nature reserve development which is well worth a visit. We arrived back along the Coal Road with a few cars tooting us with encouragement as they drove past. We had a few donations handed to us by passers by. Heading towards the roundabout near Van Gemerens we continued our walk into Hasland village, stopping en route to capture some photos. We then walked along Eyre Street onto Storforth Lane, returning up Broomfield Avenue to Norwood Avenue, where Stewart Goggins presented us with our medals. We saw a few people on our way taking part in activities of their choice, fundraising for Ashgate Hospicecare, who are in great need of funds after the lockdown of their charity shops. The Weather was good for us, we had plenty of laughs. I enjoyed the company of my team members.”
News from Spital Cemetery
The trees are certainly telling us Autumn is here. It can be a beautiful time to visit the cemetery.
Our plans to welcome visitors over Heritage Open Days 11‐20th September this year had to be changed (indeed, a wonderful foraging session, a bat walk and a moth identification event had to be cancelled) but we joined forces with Don Catchment Rivers Trust and put a river and cemetery trail onto the Downloads on both of our websites. So this year visitors can safely bring friends or family and self guide. Visit www. friendsofspitalcemetery.co.uk and click on the Downloads tab to find the guide, or visit www.dcrt.org.uk, click on info then downloads. DCRT have been perfect partners. As they are cleaning up the rivers Hipper and Rother after years of heavy pollution from industry, it made an interesting trail to follow the rivers, the site of so much industry and then visit the cemetery where many of the people of Chesterfield, who had used the river water for power/cleaning and to dispose of their waste, chose as their final resting place. The download will be permanently available on our website, there just won’t be any pink welcoming bunting and numbers to give you a bit of help but the map is very clear. And what’s next? For ever optimistic, the Spire is still hopeful to be able to welcome the many people who enjoy their Christmas Tree Festival 14th November ‐ 29th and have invited us again to contribute. We will be there if all goes to plan and our tree will be adorned with wreaths made from natural material collected in the cemetery (therefore compostable) and information about the symbolism of wreaths which we see on some of our graves. Friends of Spital Cemetery have a website, facebook page and you can find us on Instagram. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to get in touch or get our quarterly newsletter delivered directly to your inbox. Update by Liz Cook www.friendsofspitalcemetery.co.uk FriendsofSpitalCemetery 6

Staying positive and boosting your mood As autumn draws nearer and the pandemic drags on, many people are feeling the effects a little more than before. With the uncertainty of Covid cases on the rise and the ever changing rules, you may find yourself feeling confused and flustered. Fear not‐ you are not alone. Studies have shown that mental health has deteriorated during lockdown and the centre for mental health predicting about 500,000 more people in the UK will need mental health support as a result of the Covid‐19 pandemic. There are many quick ways to boost our mental health and self‐esteem and I have outlined some of these below. 1. Keep taking lockdown walks – During lockdown many of us got our walking boots on and got out walking more than normal. The health benefits of exercise are obvious, but exercise is a key contributor to boosting our mental health as our body produces endorphins (feel‐good hormone) when exercising. A long, scenic walk would be great but studies have found walking for as little as 12 minutes is enough to boost your spirits. 2. Spend time in nature – A study from Cornell University in New York found that spending as little as ten minutes in a natural setting such as a country park or in the woods helped boost mood. Try to immerse yourself with the sound of bird song to disconnect from your own thoughts. 3. Plan a mini‐break ‐ Dutch scientists looked into the effects of holiday on mood and found that the biggest mood booster came in the planning stages, in which they call it ‘vacation anticipation’. Results showed an increase in mood for eight weeks after booking. 4. A long phone call or Facetime with a friend – A Yale University Professor, Dr. Laurie Santos, likens social interactions to food. Many people have become reliant on texting, WhatsApp groups and Facebook Messenger which have been likened to junk food‐ compelling but unsatisfying. Whereas a chat with friends on the phone or via a face‐to‐face app like Facetime or Zoom leave us feeling comforted and satisfied. 5. A quick blast of cardio – Aerobic exercise releases endorphins and increases the oxygen supply to particular areas of the brain that are linked to our feelings and mood. Going for a run or jog is one of the most effective ways to boost mood. A study of 8,157 runners from Glasgow Caledonian University found that 89% felt better afterwards. 6. Eat antioxidant rich foods – We know that a healthy, balanced diet is key for maintaining our health and boosting weight loss, but foods high in antioxidants boost Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is strongly linked with gut health and mood, which can drastically improve our mental health. These foods include; salmon, spinach, eggs, Greek yoghurt, green tea, flax seeds and avocado. Hopefully by making a few little changes, you will see an improvement in your mood. Be kind to yourself and practise a little more self‐compassion. We are going through ‘unprecedented’ times at the minute, things are tough, but hang in there. You’ve got this.

Myth Buster: Will I lose my rights to the marital home if I move out? Recent months have put pressure on everyone’s relationships in lots of different ways, but for many couples that were already struggling to keep it together, it has simply been the final straw. If your relationship has reached breaking point and one of you needs to move out, please do not worry about losing your right to the marital home. One of the most common myths in family law is that you will lose your legal rights to the marital home if you move out. If you are the joint owner of the property then you will remain the joint owner, even if you decide to move out. If however, you do not own the house and it is in your partner’s sole name then again, don’t worry, we can help you to register what we call ‘matrimonial home rights’ on the property. Equally however, the reverse is true; if you are the sole owner then your partner can also register ‘matrimonial home rights’ on the property. Either way, we can help you to protect your interests as part of the divorce process. What are Marital Home Rights? If you do not own a share of the marital home then you can still protect your interest in the property by applying for ‘Matrimonial home rights’. This is a statutory right to protect your interest in the marital home. Once the application is submitted, a caution is placed on the registered title of the property, which in effect is a notice that prevents it from being sold, transferred or mortgaged without your consent. Any attempt to deal with property, will then be flagged up by the conveyancers or stopped by the land registry. A notice is served to the owner of the property, and the protection will last as long as you are married or remain in a Civil Partnership. An agreement would be sought from the other party, or an application made to the Court to ensure that the Decree Absolute (which legally ends your marriage) is not pronounced until a financial settlement is agreed between you, or made by an order of the Court. This is the only way you can protect your financial interest in the matrimonial home and we would recommended this to anyone who is separating and does not own an interest in the martial home. If you need any advice on matrimonial property or have any questions about starting divorce proceedings, please get in touch with our award winning Family Law team. All appointments can now be done either over the phone or by video chat at your convenience.

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES OF LOCKDOWN WITH CHESTERFIELD MUSEUM Chesterfield Museum are appealing for members of the public to share their memories, stories and objects from lockdown for a new exhibition that aims to commemorate the experience of Chesterfield residents during this unprecedented crisis. Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We are planning an exhibition at Chesterfield Museum that reflects on the town’s experience during the pandemic. We want local people to share their stories of lockdown, photographs taken in lockdown and objects that developed an important or special role during lockdown. We hope this collection will reflect the pandemic as a significant event in the town’s history that had an impact on the whole community.” Submissions for the exhibition can be photographs, items and keepsakes or stories. Images are really important, and these can be anything that shows what Chesterfield was like during lockdown whether that be signage, queues or empty streets and parks. They can also take the form of images of the things that have helped you cope during lockdown, whether it shows your quiet space to escape in, the new hobbies you’ve tried or even how you’ve stayed connected with friends and family online. There are lots of different items and objects that can be submitted, it can be artwork like the incredible rainbows so many people have created to show their support for the NHS. It can also be items like home made face coverings, hand sanitiser and similar items that have become extra important during the pandemic. Stories are also welcome, and these can take many different forms like diary entries, blogs, poems, letters and emails. The museum is also keen to include the stories of key workers who have kept Chesterfield and the UK going during this unprecedented crisis. To find out more and share your stories please contact the team via the Chesterfield Museum Facebook page: www.facebook.com/chesterfieldmuseum or email: museum.collections@chesterfield.gov.uk.

As autumn approaches it's time to think about Sweet Peas and other flower seeds can be sown outdoors, but for the best early plants sow in a plant pot and germinate in a planting pots for winter and spring colour. Start by putting a good layer of pebbles or broken clay pot pieces into the bottom before filling with compost. Use a good quality, free draining mix if they are to be outside all winter. Then plant up with your favourite plants and bulbs for colour now and on into the spring. Remember that if you're planting bulbs, the larger the bulb the lower it is planted leaving the smaller bulbs nearer the surface. This is also the time for planting and transplanting any shrubs and trees, so early in the month prepare borders to be ready for these. This can be done until next April as long as the soil isn't frozen. Double dig the ground and dig in well rotted garden compost or manure, this can be bought from garden centres. At planting time dig a large hole so the roots can be spread about. Trees, Standard Roses and some tall shrubs will need staking for support, this should be inserted into the hole before planting to avoid root damage. Scatter a handful of bone meal into the hole of any large shrub and soil that is replaced around the roots should be peat based to encourage new roots to form. Firm the root with your foot as soil is added. It is important to set new plants at the same depth as they were in the pot so look for the soil mark as a guide. After planting use plastic tree ties to stake as these are flexible and will expand as the trunk grows. Rose and hardwood shrub cuttings can still be taken. These are taken from this years growth and ideally need to be 6‐18” long. At the base cut just below a bud or the cutting can be removed from the mother plant with a slither of older wood known as a 'heel'. Insert the cuttings directly into the ground. This time next year you will be able to transplant them. You can be pretty ruthless with the new plants when cutting them back as this will encourage them to bush out. As soon as the frost begins to blacken Dahlia and tuberous Begonia foliage, lift them, cutting the stems to 6” from the tubers. Leave them in a dry place for about a week. Store them in boxes packed with fairly dry peat to stop them from drying out too much. Gladioli corms can also be treated in the same way.
cold frame. Keep the frame closed until the first leaves appear , then only close the frame during frosty or windy weather. Plant spring bedding plants as soon as summer bedding is cleared. Dig thoroughly and add well rotted compost so it is 3‐4“ deep. Either tread the beds or let them settle naturally before planting out Wallflowers, Pansies and Forget‐me‐nots. Bulbs and Lilies can still be planted and many of the spring bulbs look attractive planted between bedding plants. Herbaceous plants can be split and planted on now unless the soil is heavy and then the are best left till the spring. Prepare the soil by adding in bone meal and planting in groups of 3 to give a good show. Early in the month plant out well hardened off seedling alpines or rooted cuttings in the rock garden. Continue to plant out Carnations and Pinks, Water Camellias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons to make sure buds that are forming continue to grow for better flowers next year. Try to get the majority of you new bulbs planted this month, Tulips being the last to be planted for spring colour 2021. It is probably the last chance to tidy round plants and do some weeding around already established plants before the winter weather sets in. Scatter bone meal and fork gently in. In most areas outdoor flowering Chrysanthemums can be cut back and treated like other herbaceous plants. Many perennials can be cut down to ground level, although any with attractive seed heads can be left, as long as they're not made too messy by the wind. Also seed heads can attract birds into the garden to eat insects and grubs from other plants. Alpines will stand any amount of cold weather but dampness will kill them. Remove any fallen leaves and cover choice plants especially those with woolly leaves with a glass or plastic dome. Collect fallen leaves and stack them in a wire container to make leaf mould, alternatively you can put them into black bags with air holes forked into them and store away for them to rot down.

Marian Quiles is a relative newby in Hasland, having moved over from Spain with a few years in Sheffield in between. I asked her for her views of our area:
07 L L CA
I originally arrived in the UK in 2013. I spent three months in Derby, nine months in Rotherham and a few years in Sheffield. Then love took me to Hasland. In the beginning, I wasn't sure I was going to like it; it seemed such a small place for a city girl. But after a few weeks I discovered a lovely and vibrant community. Walking around I realised there were independent shops and cafes, and all the other essential services that one needs, such as nice pubs with live music, hairdressers and food take‐aways. The location of Hasland is also fantastic, Chesterfield town centre is 20 minute walking distance as is Grassmoor country park. You can be in the Peak District in less than half an hour drive and if you need the motorway, it is just around the corner. However, what I love most about living here is that the community shapes Hasland and Grassmoor, not its streets and buildings. Thanks to the Hasland magazine, I found out that there was also a lot of activities available and accessible in the neighbourhood, where people have a chance to gather and keep active mentally and physically. There might not be a fancy gym with muscle men who love themselves and state of the art equipment, rather there are classes for all ages and abilities in a church facility or a unit in a trading state where you feel welcome from minute 1. Another thing that surprised me was how such a small park in the heart of Hasland could hold so much stuff for everyone: a playground for kids and adults, gardens, dancing venues, photography contests, bowling and tennis courts, a skate park and plenty of grass to play other sports. There is a little theatre which is also run by community members and a charity cat cafe in Grassmoor. It is things like that, people caring and providing for others, that make this place so special to me.

The Totally Locally Fiver Fest is a nationwide celebration of Britain’s fantastic small businesses and shops. Many are run by families or individuals, but ALL contribute massively to the economy of the UK and the wellbeing of our towns. This year Hasland is joining FiverFest, a community shopping event created by the team at TotallyLocally.org and promoted locally by Hasland Magazine. The shopping event will take place from the 10th‐ 24th October. Many local businesses will be offering a special £5 deal for the two weeks. The idea is to show you the diversity and value of what they sell and to say thank you to the communities that support them. We hope that you will visit a few shops that you may not have tried before and discover a new favourite. Posters will be up in shop windows and there will be a Facebook page dedicated to sharing all of the offers far and wide. Take a look at the fantastic offers then please, please pop into your local shops and businesses and support them. You may discover a new local store or food outlet! Spending just £5 a week in your local area makes a big difference and Fiver Fest promotes this message. Our local spending makes a massive difference to the livelihoods of local business owners. Spread the word, look out for the Hasland FiverFest Facebook page and share it ‐ let’s help to promote the amazing range of independent local businesses that we are lucky enough to have nearby! Huge thanks to LGS Design who have created a Hasland FiverFest banner to be displayed in the Village and have contributed to the production of the posters which advertise the event around the area. Thanks also to Friends of Eastwood Park and Grassland Hasmoor Big Local for their help in spreading the word about the event.
THE LAST NATIONAL FIVER FEST (FEBRUARY 2020) SAW OVER 100 TOWNS & THOUSANDS OF INDEPENDENT SHOPS AND BUSINESSES JOINING IN. Participants reported big sales and new customers rediscovering their High Street and local stores. “If Every Adult in The UK spent £5 per week in their local shops and businesses, instead of online, at a national chain or at the big supermarket, it would be worth £13.5 billion going directly into the local economies, per year going directly back into our towns. Which means more jobs, a better high street, a stronger economy & a nicer place to live. Makes you think doesn’t it?!” PLEASE NOTE: ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO STOCK / APPOINTMENT AVAILABILITY!

The joy of being 2 at Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins Day Nursery and Nursery School has been taking good care of many of our children since 1996. Many childhood friendships are forged there which continue throughout the children’s school days. Early Years Teacher Jenny Purdy who leads the two year olds has written this lovely poem (right) to let us know what life is like as a 2 year old at nursery and how much fun the children have. Children are welcome to attend Mary Poppins from 3 months up to five years old. Many parents don’t realise that their child can enjoy their reception year at the nursery school too. There are separate areas of the nursery for each age group of children, meaning their learning experience is tailored exactly to suit them. There is also a quiet area for tired younger children to have a nap when they need to. The fantastic indoor and outdoor facilities are constantly being updated and invested in. The air conditioned playrooms and the bright and cheery outdoor areas are perfectly set to help small children learn as they play. There are always happy sounds coming from the nursery! The children even get a chance to enjoy gardening and growing vegetables. The nursery is open from 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday, every week of the year and is only closed for Bank Holidays. The dedicated cook prepares two nutritious home cooked meals each day for the children to enjoy. There are free places available for children aged two and three, just ask the team for details. Owner Helen loves the great reputation that Mary Poppins has carefully earned over the years and the whole team strive to help each child achieve their own individual potential. Plastic Free ChesterďŹ eld is calling on local residents to join in with a series of six actions this autumn, as part of a nationwide singleâ€?use plastic protest organised by the charity Surfers Against Sewage. The group says the six grassroots actions, which began on the 5th September and run to the 18th October, are designed to challenge the manufacturers of unnecessary, singleâ€?use plastics, change public perception and demand stronger legislation from the government. Greg Hewitt, Community Lead of Plastic Free ChesterďŹ eld said: "We want to create a national wave of noise that cannot be ignored; calling on the UK Government to raise the plastic agenda at the highest levels of power, grounding it in parliamentary consciousness and demanding stronger legislation on reduction, production and systems." The six actions have been designed to be simple and eective, so as everyone can at least do something to be part of the campaign: • Litter picks around ChesterďŹ eld’s streets, green spaces and waterways • Monitoring and recording the branded packaging pollution items people ďŹ nd in during the Community Clean Ups • #returntooender: Challenging the industry and supermarkets to reduce reliance on singleâ€?use plastic packaging. See it, Snap it, Share it on social media • #LessPlasticPlease survey: from half cucumbers in bags to coconuts wrapped in clingďŹ lm, the survey will demand supermarkets take action on your plastic pet hate • Surfers Against Sewage provide templates and information to write to your MP, Supermarket HQs and local stores to demand reductions • With schools reopening, it’s time to bring the environment back into the classroom through the Plastic Free Schools programme The aim of the Plastic Protest is to gather evidence to call big plastic packaging brands to account and demand the Government to take the plastic pollution crisis seriously. Greg continued: "The plastic industry around the world is using the current pandemic to delay critical policy that would see the reduction of plastic pollution. We are already seeing the impacts of this in the UK with delays to bans on straws, stirrers and cotton bud sticks. We need the Government not to use one crisis to ignore another." "We need manufacturers to be responsible for 100% of the costs of dealing with their plastic packaging. And we need a Deposit Return Scheme to be introduced before 2023 that can accept a wide range of materials, including ALL plastic bottles."
Whether your laundry is piling up, your house could do with a good spring clean, our cleaning specialists can take care of it for you.

Let your loved one live on in a planted memorial Harold Lilleker & Sons are now stockists of Living Memorial Soil Kits. The only organic mixture that allows your loved one’s cremated ashes to live again as a planted memorial. Many of us yearn to have something we can see and touch to remind us of the loved one who is no longer here. While nothing could ever replace that life, choosing a plant or tree planting for your home or garden is a powerful way to remember that special bond.
Ashes to Ashes - As the saying goes. When we scatter or bury our loved ones’ cremated remains, we do so with the belief that they will nurture the earth just as they nurtured our spirits. Science indicates, however, that the old saying is true: ashes placed into the earth will remain ashes forever and that’s bad news for our environment. The Woodland Burial Company, creators of Living Memorial, worked with independent labs to understand why ashes are toxic to the environment. After a series of soil studies, they learned that the high pH level and excessive sodium content of cremated remains prevents them from releasing nutrients. No amount of soil will naturally offset these levels, so plants will grow around areas with cremated ash.
“Professional care from an independent family business, trusted to serve the local communities for over three generations.”
Ask about our Funeral Plans
Why use Living Memorial? Living Memorial contains RTN soil, an all-organic mixture made using 100% biodegradable material. This blends with ashes to create a nourishing environment scientifically proven to support plant life. Living Memorial has been created to protect the environment for future generations. Unlike similar products the patented organic mixture allows you to choose a plant or tree of your choice making the memorial personal to you. Your ashes will be returned to you mixed with RTN soil, leaving you free to explore several eco-friendly memorial options. If you choose to scatter your loved ones ashes a Living Memorial kit ensures they give life back to the earth. It is recommended that the ashes sit with the RTN soil mixture for 90-120 days to reach normal pH and sodium levels. For those who’d rather not plant, a Living Memorial kit lets you bury ashes with the peace of mind that, when you return to that special place, it looks even more beautiful than when you left it.

HASLAND REMEMBERS VJ DAY 75th ANNIVERSARY Whilst VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of Armed Forces personnel were still involved in bitter fighting in the Far East. Victory over Japan would come at a heavy price, and Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) marks the day Japan surrendered on the 15 August 1945, which in effect ended the Second World War. As always, the Hasland community were ready to commemorate this day with two ceremonies at 11am and 8pm by the war memorial in Eastwood Park. Many local residents came to pay their respects alongside Mayor of Chesterfield Cllr. Gordon Simmons, Cllr. Amanda Serjeant, MP Toby Perkins, Father Geoffrey Borrowdale ‐ Rector of Saint Paul's Church Hasland, Reverend Margaret Mwailu from Hasland Methodist Church and Steven Wright, chair of the Grassland Hasmoor Big Local. Barbara Arrandale from the Friends of Eastwood Park and the Big Local helped organise the day as well as Drew Lilleker from Harold Lilleker and sons. At 11am John‐Charles Tanner played ‘The Last Post’ before two minutes silence was observed followed by
‘Reveille’. Then followed readings of ‘For the Fallen’ and ‘Cry for Peace’, a poem which was written especially for the day. This was read by Father Geoffrey and was particularly poignant to him as his Father in Law fought in the battles in the Far East. The National Anthem was then played by John‐Charles to conclude the ceremony. The evening ceremony began with John‐Charles playing ‘Sunset’ before the readings were repeated by John Rivers and Revd. Margaret Mwailu. The VJ Day events were organised nationally by Pageantmaster Bruno Peek, from Gorleston and Brass Bands England. The first pipes sounded in New Zealand and the last ended 22 hours later on the Island of O’ahu, Hawaii.

Christmas magic at Heaton Park, Manchester Last year my children and I enjoyed a magical evening exploring Lightopia, an award winning festival of lanterns and light which took place in Heaton Park, Manchester. The event is set to return to Manchester this year, and is a fantastic opportunity for a magical family evening. The highlight for us was an amazing light and water show over the lake. Here is the event information from the organisers in case you want to give it a try! Lightopia showcases unique interactive and immersive lights, lanterns and installations, with a magical illuminated trail that has been designed to maintain social distance from others. Lightopia 2020 will see new installations unveiled and a brand‐new route for guests to explore. The new route has been designed to create a safe environment, where Lightopians are able to see the sights safely with friends and family. New themes to uncover include a stand‐out Christmas showcase, which uses the Grade I‐listed Heaton Hall as its sparkling backdrop – enjoy the most wonderful time of the year at Lightopia, as you pass by Santa’s sleigh, glistening snowflakes and make your own festive soundtrack with a giant interactive walking piano. Also new for 2020, is the Astronomy display; illuminating the night sky with its beautiful moon installation, other pieces include robotic controlled pads on the floor, which create light shows when stepped on and an interactive Zodiac Sign installation. There will also be an area dedicated to the Manchester Skyline and an immersive Musical City encouraging visitors to dance their way through the lights. The popular Animals attraction will return, and much‐loved installations from last year can be re‐visited in the Discovery space. Children will be full of excitement as they enter the fairytale world of candy, flowers and characters at the Woodland Fairytale area, with some new captivating pieces featured in this illuminated wonderland. The Lakeside water show will also play a key role in the exhibition, as a state‐of‐the‐art projection creates a visual masterpiece, bringing the story of Lightopia to life; with a new production created for this year that reflects the Lightopia theme of discovery. Shimmering walkways, lights and lanterns will guide the walkways, marking the route direction. And extraordinary dragon sculptures will lead the way Lightopia’s food stalls and licensed bars. Lightopia will be open from Friday 20th November until Sunday 3rd January. The event is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, except during school holidays. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are closed. Opening times are between 5pm to 10pm, and last entry is 8.30pm daily. Advance tickets are priced at £20.00 for adults (or £22.00 on the day), £13.00 for children (or £15.00 on the day), and £60.00 for families of two adults and two children (£68.00 on the day). Children under three can go free. Essential carers of disabled visitors can attend for free, the disabled visitor pays the normal admission fee. To book tickets, visit www.lightopiafestival.com or follow Lightopia on Instagram and Facebook.

In a new fundraising campaign set up by Ashgate Hospicecare, providers of specialist care to patients with a life‐limiting illness, local Derbyshire residents can take on Chesterfield FC legend, Jamie Hewitt, and former LMA Manager of the Year, Danny Wilson, in a Fantasy Football league. For a suggested £5 minimum donation, the region’s budding Jurgen Klopp’s and Chris Wilder’s can go up against two former Chesterfield FC favourites for the chance to win a range of prizes. Former manager for Chesterfield, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, Danny Wilson, said: “I have to admit that I’m a bit of a beginner when it comes to Fantasy Football but I’m delighted to be giving it a go for the first time in aid of such a wonderful cause. It will be fantastic to pit my wits against football fans across the region to raise money for hospice care in North Derbyshire. If nothing else, it’s just nice to be given the budget to choose between Harry Kane or Sergio Aguero.” Chesterfield FC legend Jamie Hewitt, who made more than 500 appearances for Chesterfield and is best remembered for the dramatic 1997 FA Cup Semi Final equaliser at Old Trafford in a 3‐3 draw with Middlesbrough, said: “I am well known among my friends for being absolutely terrible at predictions so picking a fantasy team will certainly be interesting. As a member of Ashgate Hospicecare’s Retail team, I know how important the work we do is to local families and it’s a pleasure to be involved – I just hope I don’t come last!” Ashgate Hospicecare Fundraising Manager, Carl Jones, added: “It’s fantastic to have both Danny and Jamie ‐ two local footballing legends ‐ getting involved to raise funds in this way. Comedy fundraiser success thanks to Tom In September I was lucky enough to attend a comedy fundraiser supporting Ashgate Hospicecare hosted by the Peak Edge Hotel, Stone Edge in their stunning gazebo and gardens. Comedian Tom Binns. Ashgate Hospicecare Fundraiser Lynn Jones had been contacted by Tom, who lives in Chesterfield. He is known as many alter egos including ‘Psychic’ Ian D Montfort and Hospital DJ Ivan Brackenbury. Tom is the co‐writer and star of the BBC1 comedy series Hospital People which also featured Janine Duvitski, Mandeep Dhillon, Sally Philips and Russell Brand, to name just a few. He is also an award winning character comedian and ventriloquist who has worked at international comedy festivals as well as the UK stand up comedy circuit. The evening was a huge success. Tom allowed three of his fabulous characters to ‘visit’ us, including his outspoken guinea pig friend Nibbles. He opened the evening as unconvincing psychic Ian D Montfort before allowing Nibbles to have a short set of his own. We then listened in on a radio show with DJ Ivan Brackenbury with numerous inappropriate hits played for the patients, including ‘A Good Heart’ by Feargal Sharkey, dedicated to the transplant ward. As well as his stand up career, Tom has featured in many TV shows including Alan Partridge, Lee and Herring and the IT Crowd. He’s also been a guest on Eight out of Ten Cats do Countdown. Since lockdown has limited the amount of live shows that can be allowed to happen, Tom has ingeniously built his own mobile stage onto the roof of his VW Camper Van, nicknamed ‘The Bus Stop Arena’. He is now able to perform his show anywhere. Audiences can watch the show from their cars with the help of an app on their phones. I think this may be the only mobile stage of this sort! He’s working in partnership with BizSpace to bring his show to their car parks all around the country at the weekends. I’d massively recommend a comedy evening with Tom if you get the chance to attend any of his shows. There’s really no one else quite like him! Visit tombinns.com/comedydrive‐in to find out more about his upcoming gigs.
I asked Tom a few quick fire questions after the show: How long have you been based in Chesterfield? I moved to Calow in 1986 from Clowne. What made you offer your services to Ashgate Hospicecare? I’ve worked with them before as my aunt was a nurse for them. I knew fundraising might be difficult during lockdown and I wondered if they’d considered an outdoor gig. Which is your favourite character to perform live? I like doing the psychic but there’s not much to choose between them really. What made you choose ‘Nibbles’ as your performance partner? Nibbles chose me ‐ he’s been pestering to do stand up for a long time. What inspired you to create your mobile camper van stage? The camper was inspired by the thought of not working! What next for Tom Binns? There’s another 8/10 cats do countdown coming out soon. If you can help to support Ashgate Hospicecare with a fundraising event of your own please give them a call on 01246 567250 9am‐5pm Monday to Friday or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

THEATRE LIGHTS UP RED TO RAISE AWARENESS
On the 11th August many theatres across the UK lit up red to raise awareness of the growing crisis that they are facing as part of the #WeMakeEvents Red Light Alert Day.
Our fantastic local theatres and arts projects need our support now more than ever as the Covid crisis has put many of them at risk. Please support them when you can and keep up to date with their plans to reopen.
Live theatre returns to Chesterfield Theatres Chesterfield Borough Council is pleased to announce that Chesterfield Theatres will again be hosting live performances from October. The Pomegranate Theatre is already open for cinema screenings and council staff have received lots of positive comments from customers about the safety measures that have been put in place. The council has also followed the latest Government and UK Theatres guidance on how to re‐introduce live performances to ensure the safety of performers, theatregoers and staff. When booking tickets online, customers can also spoil themselves by pre‐ordering tasty treats including ice creams, sweets and drinks at a reduced price. Snacks and drinks can also be purchased when attending the Theatres, but staff will only be accepting card payments. The Theatres team are looking forward to welcoming you back and are grateful for the messages of support that they have received from theatregoers through this difficult period. As darkness fell the Rose Theatre on Rose Hill in Chesterfield was lit up by members of Chesterfield Studios youth theatre group who held a vigil during the evening to show their support for theatre. The event was held in a bid to urge the government to offer support to the industry. The majority of theatre productions have been cancelled in recent months leaving many professionals at risk of losing their jobs. 70% of people in this field are freelance and self employed so their livelihood is seriously threatened.
Jonathan Francis, Artistic Director at Chesterfield Studios told me “I'm so proud that we were able to play a small part in Light It In Red and help to demonstrate the immense loss the closure of arts venues has caused to our communities.“ Alongside the event, performing arts teacher Becky Langford‐Parker took part in a solo fundraising event to help Chesterfield Studios through the crisis. During the course of 24 hours she ran one mile each hour before reaching the end of her final session at Rose Theatre as the red light was switched on. Her efforts raised over £1700. Many members of the youth theatre group joined Becky for the last mile of her epic journey. 28

Autumn Play Season at the Pomegranate Theatre Chesterfield favourites Tabs Productions and Rumpus Theatre Company lead us back into live theatre this season with a trio of plays. Each production will star two familiar play season actors who will perform in their very own ‘bubbles’. There is currently a great offer available as you can see all three plays for the price of two. This offer is only available until the day before the first play, Mon 12th October. I chatted to Hasland actress Susan Earnshaw from Rumpus Theatre Company about how she was feeling about a return to live theatre: “Each play is performed by three different couples which is great as each couple won’t need to socially distance from each other. We are all really excited to be working again and feel it's so important to get live theatre back up on its feet in our region. My husband David and I are in the first play, a comedy in the hectic style of the 39 steps. We play about 20 parts between us including most of the Royal family! The second play is a thriller and the third show is another comedy by Arthur Smith. They're all very different plays and we'd really love it if people could come out and support us and the theatre!” Rumpus Theatre Company presents

Chesterfield’s retro clubs inspire MENTORSHIP SCHEME CELEBRATES £25k new options for fashionistas Some of the town’s most iconic pubs and nightclubs of the ‘80s have been re‐born as the new must‐haves of summer fashion. An entire range of apparel has gone to sale dedicated to Neil Anderson (right) and Carl Flint with some of the new designs inspired by ‘80s Chesterfield celebrating long‐gone Chesterfield icons like the Adam & Eve, Fusion, Hare & Greyhound, Aquarius, and Manhattan. The idea is the brainchild of Neil Anderson, publisher of the celebrated Dirty Stop Outs book series, and renowned Chesterfield‐born illustrator Carl Flint. “I’d been mulling over the idea of launching a range of merchandise for a while and lockdown persuaded me to do it”, said Neil Anderson. “Shops were shut for months and supply chains were broken which meant many leading clothing brands were unable to fulfil orders. Everything we do is hand‐printed in the region so we don’t have any problems.” The clothing has been inspired by the success of Neil Anderson’s Dirty Stop Outs books that have enjoyed best‐selling status in town. Carl Flint, one of the country’s foremost illustrators that has worked for the NME, Guardian and Channel 4, said ‘80s Chesterfield provided a rich palate of pop culture for inspiration. “The town might have been hit hard by the recession and the Miners Strike in the era but it never lost the ability to enjoy itself. Chesterfield was awash with venues and bars and the merchandise reflects the amazing breath of what was on offer.”
The clothing is available now from www.dirtystopouts.com
FUNDING BOOST FROM PCC
A mentorship project helping to rebuild the lives of people affected by drug and alcohol dependence recently welcomed Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa during a behind‐the‐scenes visit. The Commissioner met volunteers and coordinators at the A Spire Higher project, managed by John Croot receives a cheque from Hardyal Dhindsa, Chesterfield FC Community Trust at the Technique Stadium, for a first‐hand insight into watched by Community Trust staff who work on the A Spire Higher project. Photo by Tina Jenner. the work it undertakes with vulnerable people to help maintain structure and routine in their lives and open the door to a range of educational and employment opportunities. The project, which received funding worth £24,940k in the latest round of the PCC’s Community Action Grant scheme, provides attendees with a mixture of one‐to‐one support, group work and physical activity. It is a follow‐on project to the award‐winning A Spire Right programme – an eight‐week scheme consisting of three mornings a week where participants are encouraged to get involved in positive activities to increase their personal development and self‐esteem. Mr Dhindsa said: “A Spire Higher is making a meaningful difference to these people’s lives, helping them to overcome immediate difficulties as well as the barriers to employment and education and generally raising their aspirations. The project is built on four years of success with the A Spire Right programme and the volume of people waiting to join the scheme is testament to its positive results. “I would like to thank the project coordinators for giving me such a detailed and helpful insight into the work underway to turn vulnerable people from crime and dependencies, which we know devastates lives.” As part of the project, mentors train some participants to become peer mentors themselves, providing micro‐jobs as an important first step into the world of work. Scott Atkinson, head of education and wellbeing at Chesterfield FC Community Trust, said: “We’re extremely grateful to the Commissioner for his support to enable us to extend our award‐winning work in helping people to achieve freedom from substance misuse addiction. During the visit, Mr Dhindsa formally presented a cheque for the funding and was also able to meet organisers of the club’s Camp Inspire programme, which offers diversionary activities for young people aged four to 18 throughout the summer holidays at the Technique Stadium. The Trust engaged with 150 children registered to the scheme, with a significant number of young people also on a waiting list.
HASLAND CFC NEWS Club hosts new Chesterfield Youth Academy for festival of football Players from Hasland Community FC and Chesterfield FC's Youth Academy have come together for two 'festivals of football' in recent weeks. Teams ranging from Under 8 to Under 16 played a series of friendly games on the Hasland School Fields ‐ giving the club's teams a great opportunity to test themselves against academy opposition. The events also gave Chesterfield FC an opportunity to launch it's brand new 'Youth Academy' and kick off the new season after a long lay off due to the COVID‐19 pandemic. First up was the older age groups, ranging from Under 13 to Under 16, playing on Tuesday 25 August. They were then followed by the younger
groups, ranging from Under 8 to Under 12, on Tuesday 1 September. The club's cabin was open across both nights, serving spectators with food and refreshments. These 'festivals of football', which were enjoyed by all, were the latest in a long line of partnership work that Hasland CFC has done with Chesterfield FC in recent years. The club is an official grassroots partner to the Spireites and most recently has provided mascots and flag bearers at home games. "In our club alone we've got around 250 young people involved in football and it was great to see so many of them involved over the two nights," said Andy Bagshaw, Hasland CFC's Club Chairman. "I saw a number of players playing for the youth academy teams that have come through our club and it's great to see them doing so well, too. Hopefully they'll go on to great things and maybe even get into the first team one day. "We've worked with Chesterfield FC for some time now and it just gets better and better. We we're really proud that they approached us to organise something like this and we look forward to developing our relationship even further following the recent takeover."

Curbar, Frogatt & Baslow Edge
During lockdown many of us decided to embrace our local areas and get out and walk with our daily permitted exercise. More people began to appreciate the Peak District and the stunning beauty that we have on our doorstep, with the number of visitors to the Peak District increasing significantly in the last six months. A popular spot is Curbar Edge, with stunning vista views across the Derwent Valley, it’s a great place to admire a sunrise or sunset. I recently visited this breathtaking place on a fairly cold and miserable Saturday morning in August. The positive being the lack of people I encountered, allowing for a more serene, peaceful experience. I parked at the National Trust Hay Wood car park, part of the Longshaw Estate (Postcode S32 3ZJ) bear in mind if you aren’t a National Trust member, there is a charge to park. There is a walk of 8 miles (allow 4 hours) which takes in Curbar, Froggatt and Baslow Edges as well as the lovely villages of Curbar, Calver, Froggatt and Grindleford. Roughly halfway into the walk you will pass through Calver, which is perfectly situated for a pub lunch. For a detailed step‐by‐step guide, it’s worth looking on the Lets Go Peak District website which contains many walk ideas and lots of helpful information when planning a walk. Whilst walking towards Froggatt Edge, less than a mile into the walk, keep an eye out for a small stone circle, called Stoke Flat Circle. It is made up of 11 stones and is roughly 15 metres in diameter and is believed to be dated back to the Bronze Age. Excavations which took place in the 1930’s found cremation remains and an urn. You will then head towards the appropriately named Big Moor. This includes stunning views across to Grindleford, Stoney Middleton and Eyam. Wild red deer are known to patrol Big Moor from time to time as well as grouse and curlew in summer months. Purple heather will brighten up the landscape in August and September, beautiful to see when the sunset shines down during golden hour. Baslow Edge has superb views over Derwent Valley and you can see Chatsworth House on a clear day. Highland cattle often graze here, so if you are fortunate enough to see them, give them space and if walking a dog, keep on a short lead. After about 400 metres you will see a rock formation standing in the middle of the moor. This is known as Eagle Stone and is popular with rock climbers. In the past it was used as a test for young men to show that they are ready for marriage! There are plenty of places to refuel along the walk with excellent pubs in Calver and Froggatt. You could even take a picnic and stop off at a scenic spot along the way, you won’t be short of options if you decide on the latter. By Scott Antcliffe
