The Harwood Museum of Art celebrates Taos’ artistic legacy, cultivates current connections through art, and inspires a creative future.
INSPIRING LIVES THROUGH ART IN TAOS AND BEYOND Harwood endowments secure the future by providing permanent and predictable support for the Museum’s most important functions.
• Creating community through
public engagement and sense of place
• Providing inspiring exhibitions that honor the goals of equity and inclusion
• Expanding young minds with
social-emotional knowledge through focused arts education
• Acquiring new art that advances the Harwood’s mission and enhances the Collection in a meaningful way
• Caring for the Museum’s
Collection – from the earliest Taos Arts Colony works to cutting edge works of today – in order to share it with the world

“We continue to successfully build our endowments through both cash gifts and bequests. This increase in endowment funds will produce reliable annual revenue for the Museum, providing critical support that allows the Harwood to remain a beacon of inspiration for Taos and visitors from around the world.” – GUS FOSTER, CHAIR, ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN
THE POWER OF
ENDOWMENT Building a foundation for the next century of the Harwood Museum of Art
How does an endowment work? An endowment is a long-term investment in the Harwood Museum of Art of The University of New Mexico. Instead of using the full value of your donation for immediate impact, endowment gifts are invested and provide annual returns that result in a permanent stream of support. When you make an endowment gift to benefit the Harwood, your gift is invested as part of the Consolidated Investment Fund (CIF) managed professionally by The University of New Mexico Foundation. While all endowment assets are combined for investment management purposes into the CIF, the Harwood endowments exclusively support the Harwood Museum of Art. As an endowment donor, you and representatives of the Museum and Foundation will sign legally binding guidelines that govern the use of your fund to ensure your philanthropic goals are met in perpetuity. Each year, any unspent earnings from your fund are added to its principle, thus increasing the value of the fund’s distribution over time. The Finance Committee of the UNM Foundation annually approves a spending distribution ranging between 4% and 6% based on a 5-year average of the market value of the CIF. The spending distribution is designed to mitigate investment market fluctuations and provide a steady, reliable revenue source for the Museum, even in market downturns.
Endowments enable excellence Endowments are key to our diversification of revenue sources. While The University of New Mexico supports the Harwood Museum of Art in a number of areas, this comprises only about 30% of the annual budget. All other costs for operations, exhibitions, programming and facilities must come from annual fundraising and earned revenue. Approximately 10% of the Harwood operating budget currently comes from endowments, but this is not enough to secure our future. A larger endowment will provide the stability needed to allow the Harwood Museum of Art to raise our standards of excellence.

Making Your Endowment Gift You may add to any of the existing endowment funds that support the Harwood Museum of Art. While the most critical need is always unrestricted funds, endowment gifts can be directed to a more specific area of your interest. With a gift at the $25,000 level and above you may create and name an endowment in honor of an individual or organization. Endowments may be funded with a single gift, or with a pledge spanning up to five years. Endowments may be funded with: • Cash • Stocks • IRA charitable contributions • Donor Advised Funds • Charitable bequests in a will or trust • Other forms of estate gifts
