MESSAGE FROM THE

Head of School

Top. Kylene Groff, Jordan Carnan-Raimey and Sasha Fox present the volleyball award to Head of School Bill Knauer.

Looking back I am struck by the many accomplishments that marked the past school year. From our wonderful graduating class to our athletics championships, from our arts performances to our middle school robotics world champions, Harvey students have thrived in so many different aspects of their lives, achieving success, and making a difference in our community along the way. On the parent and alumni side, our fundraising efforts were another measure of the year’s great success. Once again we exceeded our Annual Fund goal this year, raising over $900,000 dollars to support our faculty, students, and programs! Your generosity allows us to keep our faculty salaries competitive, increase staff benefits, add needed positions to our faculty and staff, and strengthen our signature academic, arts, and athletic offerings. Class gifts from the 8th and 12th grades provided funding to enhance our programs and build our endowment for financial aid. We also launched the planning phase of the Weil House and Barn project, and the Class of 2018 and other enthusiastic donors already kicked off our fundraising efforts, bringing our overall giving from the community to over $1.5 million for the year! The completion of the Weil project will increase classroom and meeting space for students and teachers while also creating an impressive first impression at the entrance to campus. Thank you for all that you do. I look forward to continuing to work together on behalf of our students and our school.

William J. Knauer, Head of School 2

WELCOME & THANKS

MESSAGE FROM THE

Parent Association On behalf of the Parent Association, we would like to thank everyone for making the 2017-2018 school year a wonderful success. With the incredible support of Harvey staff and administration, the PA was able to raise significant funds that are critical to supporting the programs and curriculum enhancements that are the hallmarks of an innovative Harvey education. I AM HARVEY was this year’s theme embraced by our Harvey community. There was nearly 100% participation and support from our generous parent body. Dedicated parent volunteers attended and participated in the PA initiatives throughout the year, including our largest fundraiser, An Enchanted Evening of Mystery and Masquerade. This benefit generated $378,000 for the Annual Fund. Thank you again to everyone who volunteered and participated this year. We are indebted to you for your time, talents, and commitment to The Harvey School. Warmly, Lydia Hellinger & Stephanie King PA Co-Presidents, Parent Association

Thank You!

TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AND BENEFACTORS The Harvey School has a long history of families who have dedicated their time, treasure, and talent to enrich the lives of our students and teachers. To all of you who have contributed in some way to help improve the quality of the Harvey experience, thank you. The following families have contributed a total of $7,500 or more to the School in the past fiscal year. Their generosity has helped to grow our endowment, support the operating budget, fund special projects, and transform student programs. We are profoundly indebted to this distinguished group. All contributors at this level are listed as members of the Chair’s Circle in our Annual List of Donors and invited to a special reception at the home of the Board Chair. Our heartfelt thank you to our families of the Chair’s Circle!

CLASS GIFTS

12th Grade Gift The Class of 2018 continued the 17-year tradition of senior parents making a meaningful parting gift to the school upon graduation. The majority of this year’s gift was allocated to Harvey’s endowment to support our financial aid program. Additionally, the class also raised funds to purchase modular furniture and teaching supplies to refurbish and convert the Study Hall into a more versatile and comfortable learning space. The Study Hall will be used for Senior Bridge class as well as a meeting space for faculty and students. This list includes contributors to the senior class gift as well as those who made gift-in-kind donations. Beyond the Classroom Beyond the Classroom is an endowed fund that supports qualifying students who want to participate in activities that tuition does not cover. This may include opportunities such as pre-season athletic trips, arts trips, athletic team apparel, or even more formal attire for prom or graduation if needed. The fund was established in 2017 and will be administered by members of the school administration based on financial need. For more information, contact Laura Prichard lprichard@harveyschool.org.

WELCOMING A NEW VISION FOR CAMPUS

Weil House & Barn Complex First impressions are important, which is why the head of school and the board of trustees have identified renovating the Weil House and Barn Complex, the first buildings you see as you enter our campus, as the next strategic step in the Harvey Campus Master Plan. The Weil House will be transformed into a welcoming stop for all families and visitors when they arrive on campus, providing administrative office space for the Admissions, Development, and Business offices. During World War II, the Weil House was originally the winter residence for the Weil family and later became the headmaster’s home where, for more than 50 years, our headmasters took up residence. The Weil Barn renovation offers an exciting opportunity to add new multipurpose space for community events, special campus celebrations, and alumni gatherings. It will also provide alternative classroom and activity space, potentially enabling us to expand our athletic offerings to include options such as fencing or martial arts. Other possibilities include a simple kitchen, a concession area for home games, and bathroom facilities. This project will also give us the opportunity to reconfigure the entrance from Route 22 to allow an easy flow of traffic in and out of campus, enhance security, improve parking and pedestrian safety, provide additional lighting, and offer attractive landscaping along the most visible stretch of campus. In phase II of the project, the offices in Sylvan Hall will be renovated into much-needed classroom space, enabling us to convert the classrooms currently in the boys dorm back to living facilities to better accommodate our housing needs. At the same time, long-deferred maintenance and improvements will be completed in both dorm buildings. We are thrilled to be able to preserve and re-purpose these historic Harvey landmarks. We are in the process of selecting an architect and excited to begin this important project which we estimate will take approximately two and a half years to complete.

Help Us Raise This Barn! Traditionally, a barn raising fulfills a practical need and also serves to bring a community together. The entire Harvey community will be needed to make this dream a reality for our students and school. We have just begun the fundraising for this project with $450,000 already committed from this year’s senior class alone. Please contact the Development Office at 914.232.3161, ext. 145 to find out how you can join us and invest in Harvey’s future.

We are grateful to the following early contributors: Christine and Kyle Groff Peggy and Ed Kavounas Lynn and Robert Siegel Kathleen, Trustee and Jeremy Treat Jen and Larry Waterhouse

ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018

Ways of Giving Trustees, parents, past parents, alumni, faculty, and grandparents can demonstrate their commitment to The Harvey School with contributions of many kinds:

Annual Fund Every year, the Annual Fund drive raises funds to support daily operations and help balance the budget. These funds make it possible for The Harvey School to attract and retain an outstanding faculty, to support the academic program, to provide tuition assistance to some of our families, and much more. Annual support helps to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and total instructional expenses (approximately $3,000 per student). Gifts to the Annual Fund are outright gifts which are fully deductible for income tax purposes. These gifts can be made in three ways: • Cash is the simplest way to give and goes to work immediately for students and teachers. • Checks and credit cards are common ways to give. • Appreciated securities enable the donor to take a tax deduction on the full value of the gift and avoid capital gains on the transfer. In many instances, the real cost to the donor is far less than writing a check. • Matching gift contributions from employers total nearly $60,000 each year. Please determine whether your employer or your spouse’s employer has such a program. If so, donors will be credited with the total combined gift in Harvey’s Annual Report.

Events The Parent Association sponsors an annual benefit and auction which is held each spring. In addition to being a wonderful way to meet new friends and get involved, last year’s benefit, An Enchanted Evening of Mystery and Masquerade, was fabulous and incredibly successful. All proceeds are added to the operating budget and help to achieve a record-breaking Annual Fund.

24

Planned Gifts These gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, real estate, or other tangible property. Depending on the donor’s circumstances, a planned gift may not only greatly benefit The Harvey School but may also provide significant tax savings for the donor and his or her family.

Herbert Carter Legacy Society All who have made provisions in their will for The Harvey School will be included in this listing going forward. These generous bequests provide financial security and ensure the long-term health of the school. Laurence Baschkin ’77 Pieter Catlow ’73 Dan Chapman ’73 John G. Davis ’50 Peter Duncan ’65 Ronald Duncan Rowena and Barry W. Fenstermacher John French ’47 Paul A. Hollos ’52 Gene S. Lasdon Jeannette and Jeffrey Lasdon Patrick O. Peterkin ’78 Gerald J. Pollack Dawn Stuttig

Charitable Trusts These are two popular ways to invest in The Harvey School’s future. • Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the school, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member or other beneficiary. The donor may choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of this time, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School. • Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee, who invests the amount transferred and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donor. When the trust terminates, the principal is transferred to a donor’s children or grandchildren at what may be significant gift and estate tax savings. For further information please contact: Laura Prichard, Director of Development and Capital Campaign, 914.232.3161 ext. 145 or lprichard@harveyschool.org

Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors may receive generous tax reductions for themselves and their heirs by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust. Unrestricted bequests are particularly welcomed since they provide flexibility to the school’s trustees to use the gift in whatever way is needed most. However, we recognize that many donors have specific interests that they want to encourage and support. Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor may want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support, or a particular program. The donor’s attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances.

All About Endowment A school endowment is a pool of funds, often donated, which is invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution. It is a vital resource and supports a variety of purposes within the school’s operating budget. As Barry Fenstermacher, Headmaster Emeritus, used to say, “It is the gift that keeps on giving.” Harvey’s total endowment including the Ronald Duncan Trust has grown to over $5.5 million as of June 2018. Within the endowment, there are restricted and unrestricted funds. To discuss how individual or family interests may match a need at Harvey, please contact the Development Office. GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUNDS Unrestricted Funds The Ronald Duncan Trust was established in 1991 by a former teacher, Ronald Duncan, who left a bequest to Harvey in his will. Trustees outside the school are entrusted to remit to Harvey 5% annually of fair market value.

Restricted Funds

The Rose Baldwin Reading Center was established in 2013 in honor of former teacher Rose W. Baldwin to create a permanent place in the Harvey library where students can continue to be inspired by the literature and books she so loved. Recent donors: Jay Abrenica ’87 E. The Barry W. Fenstermacher Fund for Faculty & Staff Development was established by the Board of Trustees in honor of Barry’s 20th anniversary as Headmaster of The Harvey School. The underlying purpose is to provide the Head with one more means to attract, retain, and recognize outstanding faculty and staff. Approximately $250,000 was raised to launch this fund.

Gifts are received in recognition of her life and commitment to The Harvey School. Her son, Jeff and his wife, Jeannette, along with their daughter, Jackie ’06, remain active supporters. This fund will be used for the sole purpose of supporting and retaining Harvey’s faculty and staff. The Black Box Theater in the Walker Center for the Arts was named in honor of the Lasdon Family.

The Salice Endowment Fund This fund was created by former trustee Susan Salice and her husband, Tom, for the exclusive purpose of supporting and encouraging the professional development of The Harvey School faculty, staff, and administration. Harvey graduates include daughters Sarah ’07 and Regina ’09.
