LAKE BURTON

Lake Burton is used by residents and visitors who enjoy the clear and clean lake water while skiing, boating, and fishing. The area is rich with wildlife, fish, and flora that are a delight to enjoy. Area amenities include the Waterfall Club with 18 hole golf course, two marinas with restaurants, Camp High Harbor, and the quaint shops and restaurants of nearby Clayton.

19 — NEAR LAKE BURTON

SEED LAKE

Seed Lake provides a quiet peace and serenity that defines the underlying character of the lake. It is probably the most overlooked of this chain of lakes, which may appeal to many pleasure boaters, anglers, and residents.

Seed Lake is the narrow Tallulah River impoundment of 240 acres with a shoreline of approximately 13 miles. It was impounded in 1926, and is the second in the chain of Georgia Power lakes, and is downstream from the Burton Dam.

Access to Seed Lake is limited to one boat ramp on the north side of the lake. It’s surrounded by national forest and Georgia Power property, Membership in the Seed Lake Association is available for all property owners.

Lake Rabun offers a wonderful setting for water skiing, fishing, and afternoon cruises. Lake Rabun is the third of six lakes that follow the course of the Tallulah River basin. Construction on Mathis Dam was completed in 1915. Lake Rabun became a haven for Atlantans who would make the day-long trip to enjoy lake life. At an elevation of 1,689 feet and surface area of 835 acres with 25 miles of shoreline, it is the second largest lake in the six lake chain.

Rabun County Communities

Clayton is known for its thriving downtown, shopping, restaurants, unique lodging, and proximity to all forms of outdoor activities.

Dillard, just below the NC border, is home to The Dillard House and other restaurants, small shops, and lodging.

Heaven’s Landing is a gated community with a paved concrete runway for use by community members and guests.

Lakemont is an unincorporated community just north of Lake Rabun on OLD 441 S. The quaint downtown area features a restaurant, an art gallery, gift shop, and a small park along the bank of Tiger Creek.

Tiger rests near the base of Tiger Mountain. It’s known for the Tiger Drive-In Theater, Goats on the Roof, Tiger Mountain Vineyards, and Stonewall Creek Vineyards. Tiger is home to the Rabun County High, Middle, Elementary, and Primary schools, as well as the Board of Education and Mountain Education Center. The Tiger Four-Way is a wellknown landmark where Old 441 S and Tiger Connector Cross.

Waterfall Club is a private community above Lake Burtonand club featuring dining, golf course, and fitness center. Learn more about it on page 14.

Wiley is a small unincorporated community along 441 in between Tiger and Lakemont. It’s claim to fame is you can see the Lakemont post office from the Wiley post office parking lot.

Habersham County Communities

Clarkesville hosts a bustling downtown noted for its dining, art & antiques shops, an active community theater and other interesting stores. The Soque River flows past Clarkesville and is known for it’s Trout fishing.

Tallulah Falls is located just along the beautiful Tallulah Gorge and Rabun/Habersham county line. People from all over come to see the awe-inspiring beauty of North Georgia’s natural wonder! It is also home to the Tallulah Gorge State Park, which features trails, an interpretive center, camping, and more!

Towns County

Tate City is an unincorporated community located in Towns County just below the Georgia/ North Carolina border along the Tallulah River.

Mountain City is just north of Clayton. Mountain City is home to the Foxfire Museum - Appalachian life and history. Nearby Black Rock Mountain State Park boasts amazing views, camping, hiking, and a visitor’s center.

Persimmon is an unincorporated rural community in rural Rabun County northwest of Clayton

Rabun Gap has been a center of farming in Rabun County. It is home to the Hambidge Center, a retreat for artists and writers, and nearby Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School.

Sky Valley is the highest city in Georgia at an elevation of 3,124 ft. It features waterfalls, hiking trails and beautiful views. It is also home to the Sky Valley Country Club and community.

Cornelia is larger charming, historic town south of Clarkesville. Shop, eat and enjoy the historic and scenic attractions including a city park system.

Demorest hosts Georgia’s longest running Fourth of July festival and parade. Piedmont College and Habersham Medical Center are located here.
