SEGREGATED DIVERSITY THE ANNOTATED IMAGES REVEAL THAT CASTLEGATE’S DIVERSITY EXISTS BEYOND BUILDING TYPOLOGIES. HOWEVER, SOME AREAS REMAIN EXCLUSIVE TO CERTAIN GROUPS OF PEOPLE, WHILE SOME AREAS ATTRACT DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE. THIS BEGINS TO QUESTION THE QUALITIES THAT ENCOURAGE DIVERSITY AND INFORMATION EXCHANGE.

AGIT PROP POSTER: BREAKING DUALITY WITH BUS SHELTER AS A TUTOR GROUP, WE EACH PRODUCED AN AGIT PROP REPRESENTATION TO COMMUNICATE OUR IDEAS OF TACKLING THE PROJECT. IN MY POSTER, I TRIED TO DEPICT THE COMMON BUS SHELTER AS A SHARED SPACE BETWEEN THE EXTREME DUALITY OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT PURPOSES. THIS INFORMED ME TO CONSIDER A SUITABLE FUNCTION AND SPATIAL QUALITIES THAT WOULD ALLOW INFORMATION EXCHANGE BETWEEN DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

AGIT PROP: INFORMATION EXCHANGE WITH PUBLIC THE STUDIO GROUP HAD AN INTERNAL COMPETITION TO DESIGN AND BUILD AN AGIT PROP. THE WINNING AGIT PROP WAS AN INSTALLATION FOR A BUS SHELTER IN ONE OF THE BUSIEST AREAS IN CASTLEGATE. ARTICLES AND FAKE HEADLINES

SHOPPING NAVIGATION DEVICES SUCH AS SALE SIGNS AND ESCALATORS NAVIGATE OCCUPANTS AND DIRECT THEIR ROLE, SLOWING DOWN THEIR JOURNEY AND ENCOURAGING INTERACTION WITH PRODUCT.

OCCUPANT MUST JOURNEY THROUGH AND INTERACT WITH SERIES OF LAYERS AND ACTIVITIES BEFORE REACHING TO THEIR DESTINATION.

FACADE BECOMES A LAYER THAT ADDRESSES ITS SITE CONTEXT THROUGH SUBVERTING A FAMILIAR MATERIALITY TO THE COMMUNITY, ENCOURAGING ENGAGEMENT FROM EXTERIOR INTO THE DIFFERENT INTERIOR.

AXIS AND FACADE BUILDING ADDRESSES IT’S SITE CONTEXT WITH DIRECT AXIAL RELATIONSHIP AND LAYERED FACADE; CONTRASTING FUNCTIONALITY BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR.

MATERIALS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WITH THE CLIENT FROM CONSULTATION TO CONSTRUCTION, CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS USED TO SUBVERT FAMILIARITY AND CREATE NEW UNIQUE IDENTITY.

NEW ENTRANCE TO THE EXISTING PUB OCCURS THROUGH BREAKING DOWN THE EXISTING WALL, ENCOURAGING INTERACTION WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WITHIN THE SITE.

ARCHITECTURE AND POWER GROUP RESEARCH POSTERS NODES AND COURTYARD ACCIDENTAL AND INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY EXCHANGE OCCURS THROUGH INTERSECTION OF PATHS AND DESIGNATED COMMUNAL COURTYARD SPACES; LINKING DIFFERENT OCCUPANTS TOGETHER.

KEY STUDIES

COURTYARD BECOMES A KEY INTERACTION SPACE BETWEEN THE EXISTING PUB AND NEW INTERVENTION. DIFFERENT LEVELS ENCOURAGE VISUAL AND PHYSICAL ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

APPLICATION TO DESIGN

PRECEDENTS RESEARCH: ARCHITECTURE AND POWER AS A TUTOR GROUP, WE INVESTIGATED DIFFERENT CASE STUDIES ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND POWER, HOW THESE THEMES EXPRESSED THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL GESTURES. FROM THESE STUDIES, THEY INFORMED ME HOW ARCHITECTS CAN DESIGN AND MANIPULATE SPACES ACCORDINGLY. THESE THEMES HELPED ME TO DEVELOP MY APPROACH TO MY DESIGN.

STRANGELY FAMILIAR: NARRATIVES OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE CITY, JANE RENDELL: SHOPPING ARCADE MIXING MASCULINE AND FEMININE SPACES

SHEFFIELD WINTER GARDEN: COURTYARD WITH DIFFERENT OCCUPANTS

COURTYARD AND GREENERY GLAZING ENCLOSURE CREATES AN AMBIGUOUS SEMI PUBLIC SPACE; PROVIDING SUNLIGHT WHILE SHELTERING FROM WEATHER, MIXING DIFFERENT PEOPLE & ACTIVITIES TOGETHER.
