LIMOUSIN  PERFORMANCE  RECORDING

HOW TO USE ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVs) PEDIGREE HERD 1. What Are EBVs? Many factors influence the appearance and performance of a bull. For example, age, nutrition, management, age of dam, health, season, quality of farm and the genes it has inherited from its parents. The only factor that can be passed on to its calves, however, is its inherited genetic potential. Estimated Breeding Values are measures of that potential and are calculated from the following:

Measurements from the animal itself Measurements from the animal’s herd mates (known as ‘contemporaries’) Measurements from the animal’s relatives and their contemporaries The degree to which one trait influences another (known as a ‘correlation’) The degree to which each trait is passed on to the next generation (known as ‘heritability’)

Performance Records

Pedigree Info.

Trait Heritabilities

Trait Correlations Each EBV calculation involves solving a set of simultaneous equations where the ‘unknowns’ are the genetic value of the animal and the environmental effect on its performance. When carried out many times, using all the information on the animal above, the equations are able to quantify the unknown genetic component. The end result is the EBV and over time, as more pedigree and performance data is added, the solution to the equations becomes more accurate as the true breeding value of the animal is approached.

2. What EBV Information Is Available? EBVs are produced for fourteen traits that focus on an animal’s economic performance… EBV

What Does the EBV Indicate?

Look for…

Maternal Calving Ease (%)

Genetic potential for calf weight at birth Ease with which a bull’s progeny will be born Ease with which a bull’s daughters will calve

Gestation Length (days)

Genetic potential for gestation length

High negative EBVs if you want low calf birth weights High positive EBVs if you want less assisted calvings High positive EBVs if you want less assisted calvings High negative EBVs if you want short gestation lengths

Birth Weight (kg) Calving Ease (%)

200 Day Milk (kg)

200 Day Weight (kg) 400 Day Weight (kg) Muscle Depth (mm)

Fat Depth (mm)

st

Age at 1 Calving (%) Longevity (years) Calving Interval (days)

The maternal component of 200 day growth (i.e. the contribution that the milking and maternal abilities of a bull’s daughters make towards their calves’ growth at 200 days of age) Genetic potential for growth from birth to 200 days of age Genetic potential for growth from birth to 400 days of age Genetic potential for muscularity and potential to increase lean meat yield Genetic potential for leaner carcases

Genetic potential for early sexual maturity Genetic potential for long life in the breeding herd Genetic potential for the time taken to get back in calf

Docility (%)

Genetic potential for being calm when handled

Scrotal Circumference (cm)

Genetic potential for scrotal size. Linked to male serving capacity and puberty of daughters.

High positive EBVs if you want daughters to wean heavier calves High positive EBVs if you want high growth rates to weaning High positive EBVs if you want high growth rates to finishing High positive EBVs if you want good calf conformation Negative EBVs if you want to produce leaner carcases or take calves to heavier weights without penalty for fatness High negative EBVs for a greater st proportion of heifers that hold to 1 service High positive values for animals likely to remain in the herd for longer High negative values to breed cows that get back in calf quickly High positive values for animals that are likely to be more calm when handled High positive values for animals with higher likely serving capacity and earlier maturing daughters.

3. What Are Breeding Indexes? It is often desirable to select animals on the basis of more than one EBV. Breeding Indexes focus on specific breeding goals and combine the appropriate EBVs in to a single figure based on their relative economic value. This is widely regarded as the most efficient method of selecting on a number of traits at once.

9 Three Breeding Indexes are published at sales, as follows: Index

BEEF VALUE

Index MATERNAL VALUE

Contributing EBVs Birth Weight EBV 200 Day Weight EBV 400 Day Weight EBV Muscle Depth EBV Fat Depth EBV

Index

CALVING VALUE

Contributing EBVs Gestation Length EBV Calving Ease EBV

Contributing EBVs 200 Day Milk EBV Longevity EBV* Age First Calving EBV* Calving Interval EBV* Maternal Calving Ease * EBVs not published at breed sales

When using an Index it is important that your breeding objective is broadly similar to that of the Index in question, otherwise you may unwittingly change aspects of your herd that you did not necessarily want to.

4. How to Use the Information in This Catalogue EBVs are expressed in the same unit as the recorded trait (eg kgs for 400 Day Weight, mm for Muscle Depth etc) are relative to the Breed Average. In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line that is central on the bar chart. Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are. Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are. An example is as follows: The central line representing Breed Average for each trait

EBV values are shown & can be used to refine comparison with the breed using the Benchmark below

Accuracy: Accuracy Values are

expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate EBVs are less likely to change over time.

Adjusted weights are the ‘raw’ weights recorded for the animal, adjusted to the nearest 100 days. No adjustment has been made to account for the effects of the environment, feeding etc.

The numeric EBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark below. This is updated annually.

5. Things to Consider…

To establish just how much influence a bull will pass on to his progeny it is important to remember to halve the value of the EBV, since the other half of a calf’s genes comes from the cow. For example, a bull with a 400-Day Growth EBV of +62 is estimated to have the genetic potential to be 62kg heavier at 400 days of age compared to a bull with an EBV of 0. His calves would be expected to be 31kg heavier at that age when compared to calves by a bull with an EBV of 0, since they only inherit half of their growth genes from their sire (the other half coming from their dam).

Select animals using EBVs that are relevant to your farm, cow type and market

Bear in mind that EBVs predict an animal’s economic performance. They are no judge of factors such as soundness, locomotion, breed type etc and you must be satisfied with your potential purchase in these respects too.

Consider the traits that will make you most money, but

Don’t forget to check traits you may be compromising in pursuit of your goals, such as Calving Ease etc

6. EBV & Pedigree Info Just a Click Away EBV and pedigree information on all Limousin cattle are just a few internet clicks away… Step 1: Click the ‘Basco Online Herd Book’ button on the Limousin Society homepage (www.limousin.co.uk) Step 2: In the ‘All Breeds Quick Search’ box type the name or ear number of the animal you are interested in or click on the ‘Breeder Search’ button to look at all animals belonging to or bred by a particular breeder. The site will then tell you the animal’s owner/breeder details, its EBVs, its pedigree and list its progeny with full links to all of their information.

DISPERSAL SALE OF THE

SPRINGSETT HERD Foreward Welcome to the Springsett Sale. The dispersal sale of our herd has unfortunately come about due to a dispute with our bank who has reneged on our loan facility which gets us to where we are today. It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that we have to offer the Springsett Limousin herd to you. All our ladies will be within the sale with only a couple of exceptions, which will be any animals that are unfit to travel to the sale. The Springsett herd was originally founded in 1985 when based in Cheshire. The small herd moved to Scotland in 1999 where it was soon decided to purchase our first stock bull Ronick One,

son of the infamous show cow Ronick Janita and world renowned

Broadmeadows Cannon. One soon put his stamp on the herd breeding both exceptional milky females and shapely bulls. His progeny selling to a top of 7,000gns. Following on into the herd was the great Croftlimousin Squire purchased in Carlisle for 9,000gns a son of Marron out of the very highly thought of Ronick Gertrude. Squire soon became a powerful source within the herd being the only bull to breed back to back Exhibitor Bred Male Champions at the Royal Show in the shape of Springsett Victory (2005) who was also Junior Male Champion and Springsett Agent (2006) who was Overall Junior Champion and Reserve Junior Inter-Bred Champion and sold for 9,000gns at Carlisle having won Junior Champion. Our next stock bull was Newhouse Aristocrat a big stretchy well plated bull with an exceptional temperament. A son of Ronick Shapely and out of a Ronick Member cow. Bought with the intention of breeding great females which he most definitely has done he also bred super sons achieving Reserve Overall Champion Perth Bull Sales and many other high placed tickets. He soon became invaluable within the herd breeding very big classy stretchy females with great milk. His girls have also made it to the show ring with Springsett Empress being most successful. Usually we would only keep a stock bull for 3 seasons as it wasn’t long before they would have been back over their daughters being within such a small herd. So this led us to Culnagechan Condor purchased at Perth for 9,000gns a son of Grahams Unbeatable who is by the great cow Habitude.

Soon after we bought Condor a half share was sold to

Messrs Hunter, Perth. Sadly we didn’t have many females by Condor but those that we did have turned out to be excellent (Springsett Faith and Springsett Galaxy).

13

With Aristocrat sold and Condor working away we needed a bull and came across a young bull Hafodlas Garnedd a son of the great show bull Hafodlas Domino. We had to use him when still young 15 months old and he had a lot to do. Garnedd is sire of the calves at foot which you will see are increasingly impressive, this is a young bull with a great future. He is a real meat machine like his sire, he has a lovely nature and is a bull you will not tire of looking at in the field with his cows.

Hafodlas Domino

Whilst judging bulls at Roscrea, Southern Ireland a real star was seen. Ardglasson Highlander a Fieldson Alfy son who was placed Junior Champion at the pre-sale show and who had had a very successful show career as a calf. Highlander was shown at 4 shows last year with great success. Reserve Junior and Reserve Male Royal Highland Show, Junior, Overall Male and Supreme Champion Black Isle Limousin Grand Prix with the Reserve Overall Interbreed Championship, Overall Junior Interbreed Champion Perth Show, Male Champion, Overall Limousin Supreme Champion, Overall Cattle Champion and Reserve Champion of Champions Drymen Show. Some of the ladies in the sale will be in calf to Highlander.

ardglasson highlander

From the very beginning a lot of time and thought has been spent planning and breeding to achieve the very best. The old families that started it all off Uplands Betrys, Keerside Betsy, Egee and Navette with Springsett Legacy and Springsett Moneypenny carrying it on so brilliantly. The aim has always been for quality not quantity and maybe we have done our girls an injustice by keeping them too commercially but having done so, they aint half done good !!

LUCKPENNY All female lots will be sold with 4 straws of Croftlimousin Squire as a luck penny. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us with some going beyond the call of duty, thank you. I would like to thank Dougie because I know he would like to thank me!! Big thanks to the ‘A’ team who will prepare and present these ladies with the dignity they deserve. As always thanks to Heather, David and all at Harrison and Hetherington for their help and guidance. Catherine MacGregor at MacGregor Photography you are a star, you came out to the farm in very difficult conditions wind, rain and lots of mud and ran around the field with the ladies, who thought it was great fun !! We are delighted in the way you have captured the cattle in their real condition. Thank you. A very special vote of thanks must go to Dennis Gall who has been a saviour to us in the last couple of months. The amount of work that had to be faced was without doubt immense and has been carried out and simplified only due to Dennis’s experience and expertise. Lastly we would like to thank you for taking the time to read this catalogue and for attending our sale. We would like to wish you every good luck with your purchases and hope you have as much fun and success with them as we have.

Sarah-Jane and Dougie
