Alpaca Classic 2013 again offers UK and European alpaca breeders the direct access in Europe to purchase World Class bloodlines, plus the opportunity to have another enjoyable fun weekend of learning and socialising with other like minded people. Bozedown Alpacas and The Alpaca Stud are offering an exceptional weekend with world renowned guest speakers from the USA and UK. There will be Seminars, Workshops, trade stands and the opportunity to view and bid for our top proven pedigrees - alpacas with exceptional bloodlines. Meanwhile, there will be an all day bar and good food with a fun atmosphere. To round off the fun element a live band will be centre stage on Saturday evening to keep the party going!

And within this auction our innovative ideas will add interest and fun to the bidding, and give breeders the unique opportunity to take home the very best we have on our farms....

The successful bidder gets to select from all of the 2012 females born and owned by that farm and decide for themselves which one they would like to take home! The Alpaca Stud, formed in 2005 with the small nucleus herds of Nick Harrington-Smith and John Potts plus the management of the Grupo Inca Peruvian herd. Focused from the very start on sourcing and utilising the very best of world genetics to expand the core herd, and creating a source of “Gold Standard” genetics within Europe. John and Nick (with a lifetime in livestock farming) have been able, in such a relatively short space of time, to take The Alpaca Stud from strength to strength.

“Bozedown Alpacas” is a name synonymous with highest quality and reliability. We are genuinely enthusiastic about the alpacas we breed and sell. Our business is built on providing the best possible advice and service to our customers, supported by our wide range of World Class genetics. Many Bozedown Herdsires have established their prepotency through producing many Champions and prizewinners over the years that they are now legendary throughout the industry.

In 2006 a small but select group of North American stock was imported, amongst which was the now highly renowned and much respected Dovecote Jaquinto. This was to prove an inspired selection, and the subsequent cornerstone of the Huacaya breeding programme. In 2010 and 2013, further additions of males from the famous Snowmass herd in North America were added to compliment and improve the existing Huacaya bloodlines, adding such names to pedigrees as Snowmass’s Quechua, Matrix, Conopa, and the great Legacy himself. For the Suri programme there is one coloured male that stands out above all others, and that is MacGyver from Great Lakes Ranch. His Grandson was added to our Suri breeding programme.

Bozedown has amassed a wealth of knowledge with over 24 years experience in the alpaca industry, which we are always happy to share. We offer a comprehensive range of services, such as stud services, livery, consultancy, and a range of courses, along with a wide range of prize-winning Suri and Huacaya genetics for sale with comprehensive back-up, ensuring that our customers return time and again. Bozedown Alpacas is proud to be a founding member of the British Alpaca Futurity Group, organisers of Europe’s most prestigious alpaca show.

Since its foundation The Alpaca Stud has been committed to the British fibre industry, and our Huacaya fibre is now much valued by the UK’s main fibre buyers for its consistency and high quality across the whole herd. Later in 2013 we ourselves will be putting large amounts of Suri fibre through processing in order to move Suri fibre development forward on a commercial scale in the UK. The Alpaca Stud has always enjoyed an enviable show record across both Huacaya and Suri, for the last 3 years holding one of the British Alpaca Futurity Herdsire Championships. In 2011, both Suri and Huacaya trophies were taken by our Herdsires, all trophies being garnered from the results achieved by the sire’s progeny, a testament to the pre-potency of those self-same sires. 2013 saw what was probably our best show season ever, with Nyetimber taking Futurity Herdsire champion, Synergist tying on points with the eventual champion, and also Yves Jacques taking Supreme at the Alpaca Fiesta. That said, one of our prime objectives was achieved, and that was for our clients to enjoy real success by using our genetics. When reviewing client’s results it is evident that they have enjoyed huge success in both Halter and Fleece shows over the last two years. We take this opportunity to congratulate them, and thank them, for having faith in our Herdsires and our advice.

The Alpaca Stud Objective: To breed alpacas that represent the breed type at its best, be that Suri or Huacaya. Our alpacas must be of the highest quality, with good health, sound conformation and genetically predisposed towards heavy cutting weights and longevity of fine fibre production, so often described as “lingering fineness”. Alpacas bred for COMMERCIAL fibre production, not just the show ring.

From small beginnings back in 1989 Joy Whitehead steadily built Bozedown Alpacas, then in 1998 personally selected the first Peruvian alpacas to arrive in Europe, triggering a meteoric rise in demand for quality alpacas. Niece Mary-Jo Smith joined her in 2000, and together they have proved a strong team in selection and breeding alpacas.

Alongside further Peruvian Selections, which have included 3 Futurity Champion Studs, Galaxy, Dazzler and Talisman, key genetics have also been sourced since 2000 from the renowned Jolimont herd in Australia to be used as building blocks in our Bozedown pedigrees, e.g. Jolimont Sculptor and Jolimont Conquistador among others. More recently Herdsires Jolimont Reagan and Jolimont Rodrigo have made a valuable contribution, and premium pedigrees from Magical Farms in the USA are also adding further potency to our breeding lines.

Bozedown Alpacas Objective: Our breeding aim is to build improvement into each successive generation. Having achieved a firm basis of healthy strong-framed huacayas and suris with excellent conformation and advanced fleece types; we now concentrate on breeding further advancements in fleece fineness and fleece weights to satisfy a growing strong fibre industry.

GUEST SPEAKERS Brett Kaysen has been an influence in the Alpaca Community on many levels since 2001. He has travelled coast to coast in North America as well as internationally teaching seminars on alpacas consisting of classroom presentations as well as “hands-on workshops”. Brett has a passion for educating, especially in the area of Animal Science. Brett was raised east of Brighton, Colorado where he was always involved with every aspect of raising livestock.

Cheryl Gehly became an AOBA Certified Fleece Judge in 2002. In addition to judging fleece shows, Cheryl has shared her knowledge with judges and apprentices as an AOBA Certified Instructor at JTCC sponsored Judge Training Clinics, as well as being a Senior AOBA Fleece Judge and an AOBA Certified Fleece Judge Trainer. Cheryl has volunteered time with AOBA by being a member and chairperson of the Judge Training and Certification Committee.

Cheryl has been a member and chairperson of the AOBA Judge Advisory Committee. She is also the fleece judge liaison to the Show Rules Committee.

Cheryl teaches at breeder seminars around the country as well as judging multiple AOBA Certified Fleece Shows annually.

Claire Whitehead BVM&S MS FHEA MRCVS Diplomate ACVIM (Large Animal) Claire grew up in the UK, developing a passion for alpacas on the family farm.

She completed a Residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University in July 2005, working under Dr David Anderson. Llamas and alpacas formed approximately 95% of her heavy caseload there. She stayed on at Ohio State for another year as a clinical instructor in Camelid Medicine and Reproduction, returning to the Royal Veterinary College in the UK in February 2007 where she established the first referral service catering specifically for Camelids alongside other farm animals in the UK. In May 2011, she set up in private practice running a camelid-only referral and consultancy practice and runs courses for vets and owners/breeders on Camelid Health and Reproduction. She has exciting plans to build a new camelid-focussed facility to be opened in Spring 2014.

Claire has extensive speaking experience and has presented at conferences all over the United States, in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Finland and Holland as well as New Zealand. Her main research interests include Camelid genetics, vitamin D metabolism, neonatology, immunology, and neurological diseases. She has co-written an owners’ manual on Neonatal Care for Camelids and guest-edited a special edition of the Veterinary Clinics of North America on Alpaca and Llama Health Management (2009). She is the current President of the British Veterinary Camelid Society.

Is it possible to assess fineness visually? This seminar will give you the answers to these and other questions related to the fineness and micron. HARRISON & HETHERINGTON LIMITED AUCTIONEERS TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE 1.

The bidding to be regulated by the Auctioneers and the highest bidder, subject to the Vendors reserve (if any), to be the purchaser. No bid shall be retracted and if any dispute should arise between two or more bidders, the Lot in dispute shall be put up again and resold, or the Auctioneers may determine the dispute at their own discretion and their decision shall be final. The Auctioneers reserve the right to refuse the bid of any person without being called upon to give reason for such action.

The Purchaser to give his full name and dwelling place and pay for all Lots immediately at the close of sale.

No Lot or Lots shall be removed from the sale premises until paid for and a pass-out slip obtained from the Auctioneer’s clerk but each and every Lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the respective purchaser or purchasers thereof and shall be removed from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense. The right of property shall not pass until the full purchase price is paid.

Purchasers paying by cheque must be prepared, if required, to produce a banker’s reference. As a result of the Money Laundering Regulations (2003) the auctioneers are unable to accept cash payments in excess of nine thousand pounds sterling (£9,000.00) for any single or linked purchase transaction. Card facilities will be available, 2% surcharge will be added to a credit card payment.

All statements in the catalogue, or made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale, also the correct identification of the animals, are the entire responsibility of the Vendors. The Auctioneers take no personal responsibility for the correctness of such statements or identities.

All statements in the catalogue, or any made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale, relating to any veterinary or other tests are to be taken as statements to the best of the vendor’s knowledge. No such statements shall guarantee the purchaser of any animal against loss arising from the subsequent reaction of such animal to any test administered after the sale and the Vendors shall not be liable in any way should this occur.

All stock is sold subject to the Conditions of Sale recommended for use at markets by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Market Committee for England and Wales except insofar as these conflict with any Special Conditions applicable to the sale of pedigree stock, when the latter Conditions shall prevail.

Payment and Stock Clearance: Payment of stock to be made either by banker’s draft, certified cheque or debit card and clearance can only be affected after confirmation of payment. Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale unless otherwise agreed. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement. All Alpacas are at Purchasers’ risk.

Neither the Vendors nor the Auctioneers will be responsible for any accident or injury to persons or property, through fire or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage by animals prior to, during or after the sale.

Commissions: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. Mobile telephone bidding can be considered by prior arrangement.

No undertaking by the Auctioneers or their servants to take charge of any Lot or Lots after the sale or to forward them to their destination shall be held to impose upon the Auctioneers any legal obligation or vitiate any of these Conditions.

9.

Inasmuch as the Auctioneers act as agents for a disclosed principal they shall not be considered personally responsible for any default on the part of either purchasers or Vendors and the remedy shall be against them only and not against the Auctioneers.

10.

If these conditions are unfulfilled, the Vendors or Auctioneers shall have the power to resell the Lots, retaining any surplus and charging any deficiency and expense to the defaulter.

11.

Substitution of lots: The vendors reserve the right to substitute alternative lots for health, condition or other reasons.

Inspection: The Sale stock will be available for inspection at Bozedown Alpacas or The Alpaca Stud prior to sale or at Bozedown Farm on the day of the sale.

Insurance: Purchasers are strongly recommended to insure their animals and there will be a representative from Armitage Livestock Insurance Agency present to facilitate cover.

Conditions of Sale & Warranties: © Any females sold as scanned pregnant and rejecting the male which does not produce a live cria (alive for less than 48 hours) during 2014, the female can be returned to vendor (at the purchasers expense) to be re-bred. Avalon is a typical product of two such powerful lines, being an excellent representation of the Suri phenotype with her correct proportions, heavy bone set and strong frame.

Her body capacity is only to be admired in an alpaca that is yet to fully mature.

Avalon carries a fleece that is lustrous, well-organised with good lock definition, heavy cutting and demonstrating an acceptable level of fineness for a black Suri. We shear all of our Suri’s annually; so make sure you take the opportunity beforehand to look at her shorn fleece and you will be better able to appreciate her fibre qualities.
