When we were first informed that we had to collect 30 objects I initially struggled with the idea of what to collect, as I don’t really keep hold of objects on mass. Subconsciously I had a collection of swing tags from clothing so I thought it would be a good idea to use them as I had a bulk to start with and I also have an interest in fashion. At the start of the project I didn’t really have a full understand of what we were being ask to achieve by the brief, after having seminar sessions it came clear that we just had to present our collection with a design format. I wanted to create a piece of work a bit different that the first ideas people were getting (books / layouts) trying to link it to fashion in some way. I chose to use after effects to do my work in as we were having tutorials in the software and I thought I could get a good outcome for my design using this software. In after effects I tried creating a stop motion effect to the video, as I didn’t have to time frame to learn and exercise in stop motion. With having my tags create the shape of a t-shirt is my way of laying them out nicely but also linking it back to fashion or where I have acquired the majority of my tags. I think the final outcome is effective for what I was trying to achieve, I feel I got tied up in this idea too much which meant I done have a mass selection of ideas to work from. This can be backed up with my research as I said before not fully understanding the brief at the start. As a final piece of work I feel it works very well as I have managed to show my collection neatly and give effective information needed from the video.

Final Video

When starting to collect my data I was trying to be too open with my data and it wasn’t working for me. That’s why I ended up changing my data source a few times. Once I had my data I wanted to find an informative and simple layout for it. I wanted to display my data related to music in so way related back to music or linking with sound. I didn’t just want a random piece of work without any design linking to my data. The process to my design outcome I feel it quite sloppy in a sense that it kept changing slightly because of thing going wrong. Such as I wanted to use slow motion for my video but with no really experience in this I found it difficult and very time consuming for this to happen. Although I am very happy with the final outcome as I enjoyed creating a simple and effective piece of work in a style I like. I’m glad I was able to illustrate the paint splats as I think they look really effective and work well for the design. I feel my final design is effective for the data source but my idea generation and research could have been a bit broader and more content there. But on the up hand I think I have designed a very effective piece of data visulaisation and enjoyed the process I did to get there.

Research

Here are 3 surveys i did for my data. The reason i have 3 is because i couldnt find a good enough data source so kept changing it till i could get a reliable amount of data. First one i did was about clothing do just gemeral question whenand where people shop. The i did 2 surveys about music so if people still listen to 80’s and 90’s music and if so what bands.

Album Sales 2012- 315.96 Million 2011-330.57 Million 2010-326.15 Million 2009-373.9 Million 2008-428.4 Million 2007-500.5 Million 2006-542.4 Million

After not getting a good data source from my first two attempts i decided to change my data context. I wanted to stay in the same field of music but wanted data that was straight to the point and easy to understand and show. So i decided to choose Album sales. I chose to use the years from 2002- 2012 as it was a solid 11 years where the sales numbers changed a fair bit.

I started looking at bar charts or designs that looked similar to as i thought using the paint or the soundwaves they could fit to a bar chart design aspect.

After watching this video for Cannon i was thinking i could recreate the same process as this video and have the paint represent the album sales. So the higher the paint the higher

I got introduced to the software max by my seminar tutor, it does several things but i can use it for my idea by inputting my value of album sales and then getting it converted into the volume level for each amount of sales.

This is the circuit i made in Max MSP. Ive indicated some of the section of it to show how it works. It simply loads a .aiff file and then using an object and number input i was able to covert the album sales to a volume sector in which the track would play at. Using the on and off switch i was able to control the play sequence. I was able to set up a recording station so that i can burn the song at different volumes to a cd to play on my speakers and use the paint with.

This is how i got the illustrations for the main visuals. Once i had edited the clips in after effect all i had to do was find the paint at its apex and just screen shot that from the clip and use the pen tool to trace over it in illustrator.

This is how my data will be shown. I chose to do it like this as its in a similar styles that i have been looking at in my research. I think having the black background makes the colours and the lines stand out more which makes it easier to navigate. The lines are outlining paint splashed that i filmed myself by putting paint onto a speaker, so when the music plays the paint dances and splashes into the air. I changed the frequency on each track depending on the album sales on that year. This is how i got a variation in height on all the splashes.

Final Design

I was really interested when I read the brief for this project, I like the fact of working with the different kind of papers from the company. My initial aim for the project was to just keep things simple and work with a typographic format. After the review session for this project it became apparent that my design didn’t work so it was for the best to start again with the project. So as this happened my aims changed, I wanted to concentrate on selling the paper better but still keeping a nice typographic design to it. My first final design was boring and lacked a nice design presents to it. I took everything my seminar leader had to say and started to crack on with starting the project again. Now when I look back I’s so glad I did so because I feel my final design now is perfect for the brief. I’ve managed to work with the paper well but also worked in a style I have really enjoyed. The cut out part of the design makes you interact with the paper more than you would if it was just a full piece of paper and with the other colour coming through it really brightens up the design. The start of the brief was tricky for me working with some of my ideas, but as time has gone on I feel my ideas have become more effective. Then getting on to my final design which I feel really sells itself for the company.

Here is an attempt i tried at creating a weave in illustrator. I tried to reveal the Fedrigoni logo into the weave but as i was designing it in illustrator it was very hard with all the different layers and the placements. After hours of struggle i gave up on the idea. It would have been nice to see this if it was able to be completed as i think the logo incorporated into the weave would look really effective.

I decided to change my final idea to another one of my ideas i came up with. I was gong to have each day or month on a piece of wookstock paper then hung off a cover attatched to a case so that it can be transported but turned into a stand to be placed on a desk.

Idea Change

YCN Competition

TID1162

This is a first test i did on how i can design the calendar. I decided that i was going to do it daily and just change the colour of the paper and the date on each piece. I wanted to keep the design simple and legible but still have a good clean typographic style to it. These are 3 styles that i tried designing the pages in. I was going for a typographic feel to the design by using the words instead of the numbers. I wanted to try and experiment with some current styles i have been interested in from some freelancers.

Idea Development

This how i will layout each month. I decided to do it months by months as i feel it keeps the size and weight down and the design aspect is alot cleaner and easier to use and view. I will still use a different colour of the woodstock range for each month. This is how each month will look with coloured paper. I prefer how i chose to go with each month that each day and use numbers instead of just type. I have included the paper colour and weight in the bottom right corner and the Fedrigoni logo in the left corner.

Here is a select few to compare how they will all look. The month and days are all in the same placement its just the dates that get changed depending on which day they fall on. I like the simplicity of the pages, it took me a long time to space everything out so that all the gaps are equal.

Here are my experiments at quilling. Not having done this before i found it very tricky to keep the paper glued down and keep in shape. I found that with rolling the paper strip up it was easier to stick down and keep in shape so thats what i was trying to achieve in the second picture. After a couple of days of testing this out it was taking too long to ever make the letter H never mind each month so i had to put this idea on the back burner.

After i had this cutout idea i thought why not combine it with the other ideas i have just come up with. So here i have some thumbnail sketches on how this could work.

Cutout Ideas

I decided to take the tree cutout idea further and use a tree for each month. As the paper company is from Italy I looked at trees that grow in Italy: Olive Alnus Cordata Pinus Cembra Pinus Nigra Ables Nebrodensis Acer Campestre As a tester i got an olive tree and experimented with it for January. Here is the outcome. I decided to leave branches in the tree so that it gives a better look of a tree but also connects to ‘January’ to stop it from ripping.

This project is a bit more branding based that what we have done before. For this reason I was looking forward to it as I had seen a lot of branding on agencies website. I wanted to design a slick but effective box for this aftershave and making it relatable to the alcohol I chose. As I chose Bombay Sapphire I wanted to use the bright blues they use for their bottle, as they are very significant. For my designs I tried to keep some iconic imaging from the company but try and sway to more of an aftershave side of it. I was working with a lot of patters created with their logo or a sapphire shape. As you can see from the development on my blog I’ve worked with that and made it quite visual in the design but also subtle. The box works well with the box itself and then the design aspect of it with the colours and the relevant information on the box. I feel my work has been effective to the brief as I’ve included some key elements from the company but also informed them about the aftershave. Also looking at different papers also helped when coming to the packaging itself. I like the look of my box and think it will look really good on the shelf of any supermarket.
