At the start of un it I was quite looking forward to it when we first got into our groups of three. M e, Lucien and Isobel spent a lot of time researching the four titles and doing i ntensive brainstorming to get as many ideas as possible. We then made five A3 posters to show our best ideas ready for presentation. After the amount of work we’d done we were a bit annoyed to find out we were combining with another group and presenting the best of theirs and our ideas. However once we did get into ou t larger groups it was interesting to hear everyone’s different ideas and to reall y start working towards a final idea. We took forward th e title ‘express a new viewpoint on food’ and got the idea of cannibalism from t hat. After exploring themes related to food, sex, humans, natural resources and so on we decided to create a meat company that sold human meat very expensively, to work as the beginnings to answer the problems of an impending meat crisis in the future. One problem we di d have during our research stages before we really stated to refine our idea wa s from one member of our group who never came in and showed little to no enthu siasm about the project. After talking to the tutors we were allowed to have hi m leave the group so we could continue as a five. I found we worked really well as a group. Everyone had there own roles and contributed well in t he ideas stages so we were all on track with the idea and no one was left behin d unsure what was going on. When it came to the designing and making stage of ou r project our group was really good because no one was too precious about their work. If someone made or designed something everyone gave their honest feedback wi th criticism and things to change so we could all be one hundred percent happy with what was being produced and nothing was being left unsaid. In the final stage s of the project we all had our different roles of things to make and do. Me, N ick, Lucien and Isobel generally covered making everything whereas Oliver put together the presentation and did the digital graphics for that. In our prese ntation to the tutors before the one to the dragons the tutors really liked every thing we made and wanted us to work on our presentation above all. On the morning of the presentation we managed to get a human model to come in so we could draw diff erent meat cuts on him and he would come into our presentation and Issy would exp lain where we source our meat from. We also worked out how we were going to stan d and did rehearsals so none of us where stood about not knowing what to do. F or our presentation as well as the human model coming in, we’d bought some meat a nd presented them on a slate for the judges to eat. Isobel was our main speaker; reading from an ipad she did really well to talk slowly and our presentation went really well. The judges main fe edback was the way we presented the human model needed to be more careful as th ere was a thin line between us doing presentations and full on theatrics. They al so didn’t like that Issy read the entire presentation, but because no one else in the group was willing to present she did really well in speaking properly. Although it was a very busy, work intense few weeks I actually really enjoyed the group work and working with the people I did. I think we worked really well together and I was really pleased with our final outcome. We also won the prese ntations, which we were really happy about because of the amount of work we’ d put in. vv

For the work experience brief for the entire year I’d been looking forward to Gill Patchett coming in to do her talk about Topman and getting the brief. When we were actually given the three briefs to chose form I didn’t take to the Topman one at all. The brief asked us to combine science and fashion and the collection we branded would be in collaboration with the Wellcome collection in London. I think having just finished the group project I was a bit designed out and didn’t have a lot of motivation or energy for a new project. So I didn’t approach the Topman brief with as much enthusiasm as I’d liked and so couldn’t think of any ideas. Because of this I started the Basement Jaxx brief instead to design an album cover. At first I was really excited to start this because I thought it could be really experimental and fun. However when I started to come up with designs I realised that what I wanted to make wasn’t that feasible and I didn’t have the technical ability to create what I wanted so started to worry about the project. Also mid week Gill Patchett came in to do her Topman lecture, which I went to and was really interested in everything she was talking about within her work and started to think I’d picked the wrong brief. When we then had to present our ideas to Liz, a week into the brief, I realised after saying my Basement Jaxx idea, i’d picked the wrong brief and so decided to change to Topman. Because I was a week behind on the brief I didn’t have the time to do lots of the initial research for the Wellcome Collection so after speaking to Liz I decided to take the idea of 1970’s science fiction and run with it. I’d got the Sci-fi idea from looking at previous Basement Jaxx album covers. I started to work really thoroughly on this idea doing lots of research into visuals because I didn’t have a lot of time to produce lots of carefully considered designs it would really be a learning by making experience. After I’d got my ideas of the kind of visuals I wanted I took the Topman images we’d been given and started to experiment with them by layering different stocks on top of each other and scanning them in. On Monday I took in a page of different images I’d made to get help on the best ones to choose. After talking to the tutors about the best ones to take forward I spent the next few days planning out and making my look book designing it while making it so I could get it finished as quickly as possible because I had very little time. Once I had my look book made it gave me the visual form for everything else. So after the look book I then made posters, labels and counter cards for in store. Considering the amount of time I had to design and make everything I’m quite pleased with how it all turned out. Designing by making was quite new for me but it was good to know I could still work in a shorter timeframe without having to develop everything and doing intensive research first.
