Experiment one

Experiment One

I have just begun my very first page so its still in progress. The coffee paper background is an image I have taken of the internet just so that I can plan how the page will look. I will later on in the stage add my own coffee stained paper. I have begun with the style of Jimmy Turrell. Like Turrell I have covered my main image in shapes and changed the image to black and white. In font I have put the words Model Like. This is a description of the figure on the page. Improvements: I need to add more to the background to relate to my second artist style. I will also neaten the outside of the models arm.

The making of coffee paper

To make coffee paper I needed Plain paper Coffee Tray full of warm water

Then put the paper into the water at leave for around 20- 30 minutes. The longer you leave the paper in for the darker the coffee paper gets.

Put the coffee into the warm water and mix un till the water goes a coffee colour. The more coffee you add the more darker the coffee paper will get.

The out come will be the paper on the right. I didn’t leave the paper in too long as I didn’t need it that dark.

Experiment One

Changes made: Here is the progression on the first page. I have added in the style of Kacper Liec and have also added on my own coffee paper. I have added in words and lines in the background as the result of the style. My issue is base around the media air brushing models and altering the way they look. Some edited versions look fake at times however despite this people start to compare themselves and take drastic decisions in order to make themselves look like those in the media. Therefore on each page I think Ill add a quote of how someone feels being affected by air brushing and how the media in general affect people. The person in the diary entry on this page went to see a fashion show where she saw other models who go through many hours of make up and styling. She automatically thinks that because she doesn’t look like them she becomes self conscious and thinks that she is not pretty enough. Thousand of girls go through the same thought process doubting themselves when in fact after taking serious decisions make themselves unhealthy when they were perfect the way they were in the first place. Improvements: I have realised that if I want to add any more work to the piece that it would look too over crowded. I also think that using spots in my work will cover the image and hide the message. Therefore I have decided to stick with Kacper Kiec.

Development on patterns and change in artist

CHANGE IN ARTIST: After doing my first development I found that the style from Kacper Liec and the style from Jimmy Turrell clashed in terms of space. Jimmy Turrell uses a main focus in his work whereas Kacper Liec uses a lot of smaller designs in his work. Clashing the two designs together makes the work look really busy. Therefore I think I should use one artist. I think I should go with the artist Kacper Liec as I will be able use statistics and other text which will explain more about the issue. I think that the Jimmy Turrell style doesn’t allow me to show the idea of air brushing, where as the Kacper Liec style does.

After looking through different pieces of work from my chosen artist I have made a few different patterns to put into my background. I have been influenced by the background designs in my artist and I think that they patterns that I have made will relate and work with my different editorial pages. The pattern that has been influenced by the weighing scales is the pattern on the left on the second row. I can use this pattern in the background to help represent weight and scale.

Experiment One

Changes made: have created my own shapes so that I can put them into my background of my work. I think that this looks like my chosen artist. The patterns are slightly bold however I think that with this aspect I am able to adapt to my own change. After adding my own coffee paper I just changed the opacity of it however with Kacper Kiec work his background are usually very light and he lets the image stand out a lot. Therefore I have changed the background of this piece. I have kept to the coffee stained background because I think it words really well with the work that I have produced.

Experiment One

My main artist is still Kacper Kiec however there are still some aspects that I have gotten from Jimmy Turrell’s work. For example the coffee stained background and the white silhouette around the image.

Final Layout: I have taken the single page and made it into a double page. I have added the text to show how the outcome will look and will re add text later when I take the page to InDesign. When I added the features to the double spread I found that the image and the text was too left. So I had to move it to the centre a little bit more. Keeping in tact with the thirds rule I have put the whole image in the second third of the page. This gives off a great composition which I think really works well with the page. Also as the page is not longer a single page I have gotten rid of the lines as I don’t think that they are needed here. I changed the font as I think that the writing will look clear and will be much easier to read.

Experiment Two

Experiment Two

I have started off with adding this photo piece to the page. I think it’s a good start however there is a lot to change. Improvements: I need to add more writing and adapt to the style of artist a lot more. The artist link works with simple shapes and editing so therefore I should apply more of this to my work.

Experiment Two

New Image!

Changes made: While taking a lot of images for my photography I also took more and a few odd ones thinking that I will be able to use them a little later in the project. I have decided to use this new image that I haven't displayed in my tumblr as I think it works in this piece. Improvements: However I think that I should include more dots which carry on from the pattern behind the figure on the right. I also think that I should change the colour combination as I am not so sure that it works. I also think that I should have rectangles around the word image smaller and not touching the title. This is because it looks to busy and divides the page a lot. With the small photo montage on the left I think that I should add more to this as it looks slightly out of place.

Experiment Two

Changes made: I have changed the colour contrast of the colours and I find that these colours fit together a lot better. I think that the image on the right works really well with the pattern and therefore I made it bigger to make it a main focus. I have also changed the opacity of the patterns as I think that they blend into the page a lot more. I have added the dots which allows the viewers to bring their eye’s across the page allowing them to notice the whole piece. I have changed the way the title looks and I think that this makes the page look a lot clearer and doesn’t divide the page up so much. I have altered the title to Your Image which includes the audience as they view the page. I have gotten ride of the paint brushes and the second figure because I didn’t think it was working as well as the small montage on the right. Improvements: I think that I should fill the gap on the left as I think that there is something missing. I will also sample how the text will look on the page.

Experiment Two

I got the for adding in background shapes from this piece. I got the idea of adding the thick rectangular limes to the page from the two examples for Kacper Kiec above.

Changes made: I have added in a small figure which I think gives the image on the right a purpose. It looks like the image on the right is taking a picture of the figure on the left. I have also added in where the text would go and will add it in properly when I take the page to InDesign. This time I have added a thought from someone who is a lot younger and is watching a photo shoot. This shows that even younger girls and boys are being influenced by the media. I also think adding in a few facts to my editorial will add to the reality of the issue. I think overall the page fits together well and the colours and font work to make the piece in a bigger picture.

Reducing any skin flaws.

Experiment three

Air Brushing a Profile picture

To start with

I started with reducing any skin flaws. Looking really closely during the stage I have taken an image to show what the face looked before and after. As the portrait doesn’t have many flaws anyway it is hard to tell however there is a difference.

End results

Here is the process I went through to airbrush this portrait. I used the following tutorial to help me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8XqJ8CQFVY

Experiment three

Cloning out blemishes

Bags under eyes- No bags under eyes Spots on chest- no spots on the chest

To start with, I have used the original image where I have gotten rid of the skin flaws Here is the process I went through to airbrush this portrait.

With this image I have used the spot heeling brush tool

Experiment three

Air Brushing Skin

Again I have started off with my previous photo with the removal of blemishes

First I started off with the skin softness. I went to filter, blur, surface blur.

Here is the process I went through to airbrush this portrait.

Experiment three

Air Brushing Skin continued

To bring the skin details back I went to filter, other and then high pass.

Outcome (after blending mode turns hard is turned to hard light)

Then I brought the details of the face back into focus.

After being airbrushed

Here is the process I went through to airbrush this portrait.

Skin looks a lot more softer compared to the before image.

Experiment three

Reducing Skin Discolouration

Again starting off with the same image applied with the previous steps I am now going to reduce skin discolouration

Picking colour discoloration.

End product discolouration.

Doging and Burning

I have started off with the image with the previous steps and I will now doge and burn areas of the skin.

Here is the process I went through to airbrush this portrait.

Experiment three

In this image the areas are a lot lighter and her skin look a lot more smoother. Between these two image there doesn’t look like a lot of difference, however once the original image and this air brushed image are put side by side they should look very different.

Dodging and Burning

BEFORE

Experiment three

AFTER

I think that if you look very carefully you can see the difference between the two images. The image on the right has smoother skin and she has less blemishes compared to the person on the left. In order to show a great deal of difference I have left out a lot of the detail in her face. In the media it is portrayed on models that they have to look like the image on the right which means having no blemishes. However on the left she does have a few blemishes. This is normally how teenagers are as this is the period in which they grow up. My example isn’t as extreme as the examples in the media however it is a valid example. I think that if I was to do the air brushing technique again I will do it with an image which has more blemishes, this way the difference would be a lot bigger and much more noticeable.

Experiment three

I have put the before and after examples together as one face, however I don’t think that the idea of the image on the left being air brushed is clear. Improvements: Therefore I should try and find a clearer way in showing how the two images differ clearly otherwise this defeats the point of the page.

Experiment three

Second version of the double page for pages five and six. I think by actually putting the two before and after examples together it can be seen a lot clearer on which one has been air brushed. As I put a lot of work into the air brushing I wanted the background to be really subtle so that it doesn’t over take the main point of the page. I think this will be the last double page spread in the editorial because the quote says that they found out about air brushing, sometimes when people find out how the images in the magazines are so flawless it helps the overall issue at hand, however this doesn’t work for everyone. Improvements: I don’t feel as if this page reflects the artist style as much as it should do. I also think that the rectangles in the middle divide the page up too much. Therefore I will think again about the layout.

Experiment three

I decided to create a similar design out of orange shapes. I like the technical aspect that comes from the design and the collage then becomes a main focus This is my final piece of page five/ six. I think in terms of design and layout has improved a lot! I think I developed it more because I didn’t find the other piece as successful as the other pages. I have changed a lot and taken out the much bolder colours. I have kept in tact with the more subtle colours. The image in the small shape montage is an image of the blemishes on the images face. I labelled it flaw with “- speech marks around it as I wouldn't call them flaws however they are at times given this name. Also I have added the words no such thing around the word perfect and I have crossed it out with the dotted lines. This is because there is no such thing as perfect.

Experiment three

After adding a more traditional affect to the images on the page I decided that I needed to add more patterns. (I have discussed this in the ‘Quick Review’ section). I will now add more patterns to the page.

I have added in more patterns to the page. I think that it makes the page more fuller and there is more to look at. I think the extra pattern completes the pattern already on the page.

Front/ Back Page

Front/ back page

Front page to the editorial. I wanted the front page to be simple therefore I have not added a lot. Improvement: However I think I will add a little bit more in terms of shapes to the front page. This is because I think I should display my artist style a lot more that I have here. So far I have made some patterns to go in to the background. For the front cover I think I will make some different ones so that the font page is different from the rest.

Front/ back page

Changes Made: I think that my artist uses a lot of background images which tell stories. This often makes the piece look very animated. I think with the shapes that I have found I have made the front page also very animated by putting small images next to the words. Behind the word go there is a circle which is green, this is like the traffic light when it goes green it means go. The phrase How far will they go to change you is asking the audience how far will the media and air brushing go to change a person. Improvements: I need to create a back cover

Front/ back page

Changes Made: I have now created the back page. I had added in my own logo and company. The company ‘Keep it real productions’ is about making sure that you stay true to who you are and not try to be someone or something that your not. I have added in a small crown logo which represents ‘you are in charge of you’. I didn’t want to over crowd the page so therefore I have kept it very simple. Improvements: Blending the title into the bg and reducing the capacity of the bg images will help make the page relate more to the artist style.

Front/ back page

Changes Made: I like the rough affect however I don’t think that there is much there. Improvements: I think to improve I need to add to the piece as right now there doesn’t seem to be much to look at.

Front/ back page

Changes Made: I kept to the images and the overall text. However I changed the front as I think this type works better. I have also added in a wooden frame and have kept to the old and traditional texture. For the back page I added the frame and kept the small logo and text at the back.

Experiment Four

Experiment Three

I decided to do this page of the computer. I think that by adding certain shapes off the computer adds texture to the overall layout. The circles are made out of paper and are painted in with acrylic. The rectangle at the bottom is also made out of acrylic paint and paper. Improvements: I think that I need to add a lot more to the page in order to make it relate to the artist a lot more.

Experiment Three

Changes Made: I have added in more patterns by hand. I think that it makes the image look much more related to the artist. Improvements: The image looks a little wonky and this make the overall piece look odd. I also think that I need to add a little bit more to add to the overall piece. The writing on the page add to

Experiment Three

Took the idea of having the head in a similar position of Kacper Kiec.

I have made similar shapes with my piece.

Changes Made: I have added in the image of the girl and then added the quote ‘Beautiful, stunning and gorgeous are words that will never describe be’. The speaker is saying that she isn’t beautiful and that that she never will be. However many people feel the same way when they are incorrect.

Quick Review: so far‌

Page Analysis: so far

Above are all of the pages that I have made so far. I think I have a good range of pages however I think that I need to stick to the artist a lot more. Therefore I will add in a vintage and more traditional affect to each page. I will also try and see what the images look like InDesign. This is so I know if I need to change the layout of the text.

Page Analysis: so far

Layout of pages may change in InDesign in to order to balance the text with the images.

I added a greeny colour to these images. However when I tried to add brush affects the air brushing affect was not as visible. So therefore I left this page out and didn’t edit it too much.

I brushed/ rubbed over the text and the figure and added a green colour to the image. I think that this adds to the overall affect of the pages looks traditional just like the artist style.

Page Analysis: so far

Layout of pages may change in InDesign in to order to balance the text with the images.

I added a vintage affect to the image on the page to give it a more traditional look. I think that this suits the artist a lot better. Again I added some rubber/ brush marks the images so that they have an old/vintage affect.

Page Analysis: so far

Layout of pages may change in InDesign in to order to balance the text with the images.

The aim was to make the page look more traditional and older. And I think that I have done this by using various techniques such as using a brush template as a rubber to make the marks. I have also gotten rid of the writing as it looks blurry in InDesign. I have re worded the words compared to the words I put on my practical . The page looks very empty however once I have added more text on InDesign the composition will balance out.

Typography- Make Up

Typography- Make Up Example One- Max Factor Practice

Original

Practice My own copy of the ‘Max Factor’ logo

Typography- Make Up Example Two

For this experiment I have used different make up tools to create different affects. I have used eye liner, lip stick, face powder, mascara and eye shadow. I really like the affect that they have produced. I think that I can use this with typography and also use them as apart of pictures on the editorial pages.

Typography- Make Up Example Three

Typography- Make Up Example Three

Experiment Five:

Experiment Five

I made this piece out of make up and wanted to Photoshop it in to an editorial page. I think the outcome looks ok however I think it could be better. Therefore I don’t think I will be using this piece in my work. I made the words out of make up products and found it very difficult to fit this within my artist theme.

Experiment Five

I then decided to experiment by drawing on someone’s face with lipstick. The idea of these photos was to add loads and loads of make up to make it look like there was to much make up on. Then by adding the word fake it makes it obvious that shes wearing too much make up/

Experiment Five

Changes made: The next step was picking the photo and then adding it to Photoshop. I decided to use this photo because the sad face looks like even her make up is feeling sad as there is too much on there. This also adds to there being too much no needed make up on. Improvements: I should consider making the page look more like my artists style of work.

Experiment Five

Adding in my own patterns from the influence of the image.

Changes made: I have added in a few patterns to make the work look more like the style of Kacper Kiec. I think that I have adapted a lot of my own ideas in to the patterns but got the idea from one of Kacper Kiec’s pieces. Improvements made: I will now add in the second page in order to finish off the piece making it a double spread.

Experiment Five

Changes made: I have added in the title “How fake are you?. The word fake refers to how much make up the reader has put on. If they have loads of make up on and the overall affect looks very over done the person can look very fake. Therefore the pages questions the reader and makes them think. By fading some of the text it makes the page look less modern and gives an older and traditional affect blending the title in to the page.

Experiment Six:

Experiment Six:

I painted a mask on a friends face and then took the multiple images. I got the idea from a superhero mask and decided to draw the mask on someone’s face to show how some people hide behind the mask of make up. I had another idea to decorate a paper Mache mask and then put make up on it. Then I would get someone to hold it near the face for the same message. However I think that due to time this was much more successful and faster way of doing it. I don’t think the make up would have come up as well, here I painted the mask on with eye shadow.

Experiment Six:

Changes Made: Here I have put in the image of the mask and I have added in the title “Mask of Make Up. This shows that when people wear make up they are hiding what they really look like. Sometimes people look very different with and without any makeup/ Improvements: I should add in more patterns to make the page look like my artist style.

Experiment Six:

Changes Made: I have made new and much more complex shapes. I took the shape in the top right side corner and added some shades in and the second complex shape at the bottom of the page has been designed to look very detailed. I think that these shapes look a lot like the artist style. Improvements: Like other pages I need to add an olden time affect to the page to make it fit in and relate to the other pages.

Experiment Six:

Changes Made: Using a rubber as a brush I have rubbed out parts of the patterns in the background. This gives the piece a traditional and olden affect as some parts look faded more than others. I am happy with this page, however I am not to so sure where the text will go in InDesign, so I might have to change the layout slightly. I have also changed the rectangles at the bottom of the page to blue. This is because I wanted to blend these shapes in to the background to fit to the artist style.
