Harghita County, a bit of Transylvania Introduction The Harghita County Days event series has reached its 15th edition. Throughout the programmes of this week the organisers, as always, intend to draw attention to our values: the ones that people living here can be rightly proud of and that are worth visiting by those living in more or less distant places. We wish to present them by attracting attention to the local peculiarities in such a way that we can make the extensive connections obvious. We are doing it because we take pride in being people of the Ciuc, Gheorgheni and Odorhei regions, but we are similarly proud of living in Harghita County and also of the fact that Transylvania is our broader home. These are the defining elements of our local identity, yet our European ties are equally important to us. The events of the County Days thus offer a bit of Transylvania, since Seklerland, including Harghita County, its historic regions and their natural resources, its past and its present, its religious and ethnic diversity, its culture and spirit are the quintessence of the past and present of Transylvania, its religious and ethnic diversity as well as its culture and spirit. The programmes of the County Days take place between too significant events: Pope Francis’ visit of historic importance and the Pentecost Pilgrimage of Č˜umuleu Ciuc moving huge crowds; they are meant to add colour to the period in between them, helping the attunement for these two great events as well as the outstanding, profound community exprience they provide.

Due to its historic past, geographical position and natural endowments, the people living in our tiny Transylvania possess a very strong sense of belonging to the community in which the need for mutual help, the joy of working together, living in harmony with the nature as well as the efficient use of the opportunities given continue to exist. That is why we love our environment, see its beauty and proudly show it to foreigners. That is why we are proud of our culture, which is local, peculiar and ours – but which is so closely connected to the European Christian culture, contributing to its diversity and preserving its deepest layers. And that is the reason we hold on to our faith that defines and preserves us. The Pentecost Pilgrimage of Č˜umuleu Ciuc is the sign of this attachment, its award being Pope Francis’ visit, his message of love and understanding. We hope that, through the work of the public authorities and the UNESCO, the annually repeating miracle of the pilgrimage will officially become part of the World Heritage, so that others can also learn what we already know...

On the Way to Mary Outdoor photo exhibition The square/park next to the Csíki Játékszín

Photo: Erdély-Bálint Előd

Opening ceremony: 16.00, 31st May. Photographs taken in 2017 tell us about the way of the equestrian pilgrims to Șumuleu Ciuc/ Csíksomlyó. It has been exactly ten years since the inhabitants of Zetea first organised a pilgrimage on horseback from their village to Șumuleu Ciuc at Pentecost. The photo series tells us about the equestrian pilgrimage, its hardships, beauty and challenges through the presentation of the leader of the horsemen as well as his son. We illustrate the pilgrimage to Șumuleu Ciuc through presenting a Sekler father (Attila Gergely) and his son, as well as the way a child becomes a lad. It is a symbolic way that also indicates the process of becoming an adult. The photo series carries visual messages through which the viewer might also get to know the Sekler way of thinking, gaining an insight

into the family relations at the same time. While the men are making the challenging journey, the women are preparing to welcome them on their return. Early morning – preparation at the family house. The responsibility, challenge and mild tension prior to the pilgrimage can be felt in the air. Everybody knows their job and acts accordingly. In Zetea, the pilgrimage to Șu muleu has a well-thought out form. Early in the morning, the horsemen and the pilgrims on foot meet at Láz, Zetea. Following a common prayer they part: the horsemen start on the Mary Route, and after a short rest at Satu Mare, they head for Homorod Băi and Căpâlnița. After lunch at Kalibáskő, they continue their way to Miercurea Ciuc, then to Șoimeni, their place of accommodation. The road is often hard and challenging, with steep mountain slopes; the horsemen often pass through fields and forests. The evening before the pilgrimage they had to find a place where they can put up their tents and attend their horses.

17

The following day then they head for the Saddle of Șumuleu. The completion of the pilgrimage is based on three pillars: meditation (praying) on the way, confession and communion. The pilgrimage can only be completed this way. On Pentecost Sunday they fold up their tents and prepare for the

They rest at the Three Crosses, at Kalibáskő, then, after a short rest at Căpâlnița they arrive at Láz in Zetea, where, on meeting the pilgrims on foot again, they enter the village together. Those who remained at home make an arch decorated with pine branches and wait for them at

way home. Returning from the pilgrimage is always different from going there. Although the pilgrims are tired, they start with great enthusiasm and in high spirits, knowing that their families are awaiting them. Half of the way has been completed, and they are helped by the blessing. They ride on the Mary Route on their way home as well.

the entrance of the village. First the horsemen, then the pilgrims on foot go through the symbolic gate. The vicar of the village blesses the homecomers and they go to church together.

Áron Márton, Transylvanian Catholic bishop between 1939-1980 He was one of our sort, a simple man, yet with an infallible moral sense like that of the saints, who knew no compromise either in faith or human dignity. He educated with both his words and deeds. When needed, he warned the Hungarian authorities (to protect the Jews not even treated as humans then) that they reached ”the last frontier of inhumanity” (1944), then, two years later, called the Romanian authorities to account for the grievances of the Hungarian and German minorities (1946). Another two years later he defended the persecuted Romanian Greek Catholics (1948). He always spoke out what his parish ”did not have the freedom” to say, although he knew that it might entail forced labour for life (1951). He could not be broken in the prison either: “even if freedom is dear to me, I do not stick to it at all costs.” (1954) Marked as an ”irredentist”, ”imperialist”, ”Vatican-hireling”, he visited his diocese when he was left to do so; yet , despite the condemnation and prohibition, tens of thousands were devotedly awaiting his words (1955-1957, 1967-1975). For ten years he lived in house arrest (1957-1967). The commun ist secret service kept spying on him, watching, denouncing, following and slandering him until the end of his life – still, he kept a strong parish. He represented and voiced the same truth against the police state representatives, at the altar and even behind closed doors. Saint Pope John Paul II described his integrity with the superlative: “integerrimus Domini famulus” (1980). He lived among us as Christ’s authentic witness. And he still lives in his speeches, in his writing, in the memories transmitted, in the remaining strength of our community, in our hopes. His place is among our saints. /MartonAronMuzeum

Márton Áron Museum extended opening hours 1762 Church Square Sândominic The museum presents the life and work of the great bishop in the backlight of the changing history of the 20th century Transylvania. The exhibition invites the visitors to a 20th century time travel, meditation and questioning, exploring the “secret” of Áron Márton’s life over and over again: how a simple peasant boy, with an infallible sense of justice could become the clear-sighted, open-hearted spiritual leader of his age, the only landmark for many in the decades of gloom. The museum is open daily between 09.00 and 16.00 from 30th May to 9th June. Guided tours can be provided for groups with prior registration via email or telephone.

Somlyó, your loyal protector over centuries a place worthy of thy holy name. The sacred spaces of the village also include the far-flung pilgrimage sites as they are visited by large groups of the community on an annual basis. According to the 8th vol. of the Hungarian Folklore, the significance of these sites increases not only with their religious content but they also strengthen the sense of belonging to a cultural community (Jánossy, Gy. 1939: 352). In the framework of the “Petőfi 36 Project”, the Transylvanian Photography Museum Association initiated a project based on the exhibition in the year 2015 with the topic “The history of Șumuleu Ciuc/ Csíksomlyó in pictures”. The association, together with its partners, tries to strengthen the bond between the pilgrims

and the place they visit on their journey to Șumuleu Ciuc. They aim to achieve this by exhibiting extra-large scale copies of old photos of the place. This way, pilgrims, tourists and locals alike can learn more about this sacred space. Șumuleu Ciuc/Csíksomlyó is truly a sacred space. It feels good to be here, to pray, to praise the Lord. This sacred space calls to everyone in one way or another. It is a gathering place for the greater Hungarian nation, where it is always good to return. It is good to seek out the protection of Virgin Mary. This spiritual centre is a strong anchor for people, offering guidance in the chaos of homogeneity, to “found the world” and to live in a real sense (M. Eliade). Within the sacred space, human behaviour changes; signs of respect and humbleness are reflected in these old photos. The exhibition includes over fifty photographs of times gone by, eras, historical moments, telling the stories of religious people over the years. These are stories of faith, the joy of living, the love of God and mankind and loyalty towards Virgin Mary. /petofi36

Zoltán Kiskamoni Szalay – A Composer’s Night

Those attending the event will be part of a rare occasion. While we regularly hear of visual artists who participate in the cultural life of the region with their exhibitions, the representatives of classical music, this extremely abstract type of art, are present more rarely and in lower numbers. Zoltán Szalay (born 1959) is also a humble person: he works in silence and from time to time he shows us his compositions. His creative art includes almost every kind of genre, and his artistic work relies on Béla Bartók’s spirituality and he is interested in the possibilities of its contemporary adaptation. This is no wonder: the artist himself is shaping his individual voice in a similar way, through collecting of and full immersion in folk songs. The composer’s night goes back to more than forty years: it includes some of his initial works but also some of his latest ones. The artist’s oeuvre so far contains about forty pieces and it contains works of various genres: solo instrumental works, acapella choirs, chamber music written for different musical instruments, vocal symphonic and orchestral works and a composition employing electric instruments. Studio walk in Miercurea Ciuc Is it reality or merely an urban legend that Transylvaniawide, the most artists live in Miercurea Ciuc? On our exploratory walk organised for the second time we will knock at some new studio doors at the heart of the town. Throughout our investigation it becomes proved that, among the Transylvanian settlements, Miercurea Ciuc is really the home of the most artists. The atmosphere of the studios is specific in itself. This walk offers the rare opportunity for art lovers to get an insight into the creative atmosphere of the studios, meet the artists in person, get to know their techniques and the birth process of their creations. If you are curious about the fresh and dynamic art trends and dialogues, join us on our tour organised during the 15th edition of the Harghita County Days! Let’s walk together! Joannes Kájoni Memorial Year Marking the 390th anniversary of János Kájoni’s birth, the memorial year aims to pay increased attention to Kájoni’s work. The memorial year was initiated by the Cultural Centre of Harghita County and its programmes are organised jointly by the cultural institutions, associations, groups and local governments of Harghita County. The name of the 17th century erudite Franciscan scholar might be known by many; owing to his versatile activity, he became the defining figure of the Transylvanian culture. Through the programmes in the framework of the memorial year, the organisers try to focus more attention to the truly polyhistoric personality, versatile works and the spiritual values represented by Kájoni. • How does a young person today make Endre Ady, Miklós Radnóti or János Kájoni sound in the language of graphics? Art and Literature (The exhibition of the students of the ”Nagy István” Art School) Opening ceremony: 18.00, 31st May 2019 Székelyföld Gallery, (5 T. Vladimirescu Street, Miercurea Ciuc) Organised by the Hargita Kiadó (Hargita Publishing House). Kájoni and the Folk Music - concerts of the Barozda Ensemble 19.00 - 3rd June – St Stephen Room, Town Hall, Odorheiu Secuiesc 19.00 – 4th June – Culture House, Lăzarea 19.00 – 5th June – Reformed church, Miercurea Ciuc 19.00 – 6th June – Culture House, Cristuru-Secuiesc The organisers of the Barozda tour: House of Traditions and the Kaszaj Association

János Kájoni meditation route

53

(sign: black K): 6 km, 3 hours The route is named after the great Franciscan monk, organist, organ builder, songwriter, translator, botanist, printer and publisher, creator of the Kájoni Codex. It is a half-day long route, which goes from the shrine of Șumuleu Ciuc, touching upon the spring of sparkling mineral water. On the road it approaches the plateau (“saddle”) between the two Șumuleu mountains where the Three Hills altar is also located. From there it goes on the road from the west to the Big Șumuleu mountain, and from there, with a small rise, we reach the second saddle of the Big Șumuleu mountain. Leaving behind the markings of K. Xantus and J. Écsy pilgrim routes, on a small path in the forest, following the K signs, we reach a saddle near the Big Șumuleu peak. If we make a 100-meter-detour to the left (SW), on a smaller mountain peak, we find the ruins of the former St. Luke Chapel and monastery. Turning back, we climb 300 meters up to the Great Șumuleu peak (1,033 m) where once the Great Șumuleu Castle, also called Salt Castle, stood. Today, there is a watchtower on the hill, from where we descend in a beech forest to the saddle of the Small Șumuleu mountain, and near the (Suffering of Jesus, Salvator, St. Anthony) chapels we get back to the mineral water spring. This is a medium-level route. It is not advised for children under 12 and for beginners!
