Waste Not Simple Steps to Throw Away Less Erin Rhoads

C OV E R

This Plastic-Free July, join the war on waste with Waste Not, your comprehensive guide to cutting down the amount you throw away every day. Erin Rhoads's own journey to zero-waste living shows that you don't need to change your whole life to have an impact (but you just might be inspired to).

DRAF T

We need to talk about waste. From plastic packaging in supermarkets, to disposable coffee cups that can’t be recycled, to what we throw away in our homes daily, we are surrounded by stuff that we use once and then chuck out. Most goes into landfill and into our oceans, where it takes decades to break down or can end up in our food chain.

In 2001, he moved to Australia to become the manager of biodynamic viticulture and winemaking at Sutton Grange Winery near Castlemaine, central Victoria. The Book of Vermouth has broad appeal to anyone with a passing interest in wine, cocktails and the story of this historically rich fortified drink. It will satisfy cocktail lovers – with 100 inventive ideas for incorporating it into drinks. Its voice of authority and historical detail also means it will appeal to readers who are familiar with vermouth, but want to know more – for example, it will dispel the idea that it is a spirit and teach people that – as much as it is the key to a killer Negroni or the best Martini – it is in fact also a versatile wine that compliments food and can be incredibly satisfying served neat. There is a (dated) perception that vermouth is an old lady's drink. The book, however, helps dispel this, advocating the joy of a vermouth on the rocks (and recognising that bartenders are no longer confused when they receive this request). And that in the past five years, a new generation of drinkers are discovering vermouth, a category that, to them, almost feels brand new. The book encourages readers to embrace the full scope of vermouth, not least its application in recipes. And to that end, includes ideas from Ben Shewry (Attica, Melbourne), Kylie Kwong (Billy Kwong, Sydney), Andreas Papadakis (Tip 00, Melbourne) and Indra Carrillo (La Condessa, Paris), Nicola Munari (Les 110 de Taillevent, London). In addition to the voice of long-time expert and coauthor Shaun Byrne, includes recipes from guest bartenders including: Sebastian Raeburn (Leading Australian spirits expert and founder of Anther Gin), Chris Hysted Adams (Black Pearl, Melbourne), Nick Tesar (Bar Liberty and the founder of Marionette Liquers), and Camille Ralph Vidal (the US-based face of Saint Germain). In addition, the package means it will assert its place in the gift market too. The authors produce vermouth under the brand Maidenii, which was one of the first contemporary artisan vermouths in Australia (there are now about six or seven brands). Their vermouth is sold in 12 countries: Australia (all states including Northern Territory), Italy, France, Spain, UK, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Sweden, Dubai, New Zealand. There is a vermouth festival, called Vadevermut, in Barcelona, held twice yearly (in September and April). There is a strong and long history of drinking vermouth in Spain. Though Italy, by comparison, is more the pioneer. The Maidenii brand - designed by Lauren Bonkowski, who is also designing the book - won double gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition in 2013.

Onsen of Japan is your entry into the art of Japanese communal bathing. Featuring listings for more than 100 onsen across the country, authors Steve Wide and Michelle Mackintosh have selected out the very best places to enjoy this quintessential Japanese experience – including traditional 7th-century baths, historic wooden buildings, open-air mountain springs, rustic neighbourhood baths, and big city super santos (aquatic centres). Alongside vivid descriptions and beautiful images, each listing includes a checklist with important travel information, such as price range, whether same-sex or mixed bathing is available, whether English is spoken, and if tattoos are accepted. A detailed introduction at the front of the book includes a guide to etiquette, onsen rules, customs and quirks, as well as information on different water types and their healing benefits. The authors also offer tips on how to take a bath like a local, bathing in different seasons, the best places to take a foot bath (ashiyu) or hand bath (teyu), and where you can cook your own onsen egg. Slip off your clothes and ease yourself into the world of the Japanese onsen. One thing is for sure, taking a bath will never be the same again.

Author Details Steve Wide and Michelle Mackintosh have been obsessed with Japan since their first visit in the late 1990s. Since then they have been saving up all their pennies to travel to Japan twice a year. Steve is a passionate writer and DJ, with a local radio show. Michelle is a book and stationery designer and illustrator. Together they have created all of the text, photography, illustrations and design for this new-age travel guide. This is the third Japan guidebook they've authored, following Tokyo Precincts and Kyoto Pocket Precincts , both which received wide acclaim. Michelle also won a 2015 Australian Book Design Award for her work on the Precincts guidebook series.

More and more people are falling for the charms of this light, refreshing and aromatic way of drinking, and bars dedicated to apéritifs are opening around the world. Characterised by their dryness, freshness and bitter flavours, many apéritifs are also low in alcohol, making them a perfect choice for health-conscious barflies. In Apéritif, acclaimed drinks writer Kate Hawkings romps through the history of how these drinks came into being across the great drinking nations of Europe and beyond. And after a look at the science of why these drinks work so well as appetisers, she peruses anything and everything that can be considered as an apéritif: what it is, what to look for and how best to drink it. From amaro to gin, through fino sherry to arak, Campari and Lillet, and with 50 suggested recipes or serving suggestions for each kind of booze, Apéritif encourages you to sit back, sip, and anticipate the pleasures that the evening holds.

Aimed at anyone who has aspired to haute cuisine but has been scared off by its technical intricacies and reputation for heaviness, the recipes contained in this charming, contemporary looking volume are based on traditional, regional French dishes inspired by local agriculture and terroir, but with Ducasse's signature treatment bringing them up date for the 21st century with contemporary twists and an eye toward healthier eating. These recipes demonstrate that simple ingredients, simply prepared, can give a result as good as using ingredients that are heavier or more expensive. The Big Dish Recipes to Dazzle and Amaze from America's Most Spectacular Restaurant Barton G. Weiss Like Rizzoli's successful Sweet Serendipity, this is a cookbook based on a highly successful and playful destination restaurant that is a favourite with tourists from all over the world. It also has the culinary playfulness of such hits as Hello, Cupcake and Play with Your Food. Would you like a shovel with your salad? A snow-cone in your cocktail? How about some meatballs in your parfait? When Barton G. is in the kitchen, there is only one thing to expect: the unexpected. For him cooking represents an opportunity to let the imagination run wild. He has a peculiarly wonderful mission: he wants us all to play with our food. His message is that having fun in the kitchen is the most surefire way to create a fun party. In The Big Dish, Barton shows you how to re-create this magic at your next party or special event. He reveals the secrets to the unforgettable food and over-the-top presentations from his beloved restaurants. The element of surprise is an underlying theme. Barton specialises in a particular brand of culinary trompe l'oeil. No dish is quite what it seems on first inspection. Take the Cheese Board: rounds of brie and camembert turn out to be miniature cheesecakes, and alongside, those aren't toasts, they're biscotti. Bite into what looks like a pop tart and you discover there is a savoury lobster filling inside. Small clay pots come planted with crudite veggie flowers and black olive "soil." Sometimes the play comes in the form of scale, such as with the Bucket o' Bones: pork ribs, lamb chops, and chicken drumsticks are served in a steel bucket accompanied by a paintbrush and sauce for slathering. Other signature constructions include Voo-doo Shrimp, Lobster Toaster Tarts, Chocolate Kiss Cake, and Marshmallow Pizza. When you make these at home, these dishes are sure to cheer even the grumpiest of guests and make anyone feel like a kid again.

The Galloping Gourmet Cookbook Graham Kerr With a perennial glass of wine in hand and his hallmark joyous abandon, the British-born chef Graham Kerr was a pioneer of food television with his wildly popular series The Galloping Gourmet. Captivating viewers across the globe during its 1969-71 run, Graham literally galloped to success (he would begin each segment by leaping over a chair) thanks to his approachable, step-by-step cooking instructions for recipes packed with personality and flavour. Kerr's approach to the rigours of home cooking and to issues of authenticity and cultural borrowing were ahead of their time, and have more in common with Mario Batali's or Jamie Oliver's outlook than with Kerr's 1960s contemporaries. Like Batali, Kerr was a masterful, ribald and erudite entertainer who wasn't afraid to have fun in the kitchen – but at the same time, was serious and passionate about home cooking, as the crisp, modern voice of his recipes demonstrate. Accompanied by detailed step-by-illustrations and informative passages various aspects food preparation, this new edition of a lost classic will have a special place in today's home chef's library.

British cooking personality Graham Kerr's The Galloping Gourmet television program brought his lighthearted, clever persona and expert cooking instruction to audiences across the globe in the 1960s and '70s. Matt Lee and Ted Lee are siblings who grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, and after moving to New York City founded The Lee Bros. Boiled Peanuts Catalogue, a mail-order service for southern pantry staples. The brothers have gone on to become some of the most respected food journalists in the country, authoring three books including most recently Princess Pamela's Soul Food Cookbook. They are contributing editors at Travel and Leisure and frequently write stories for Bon Appetit, The New York Times, Fine Cooking, and Food and Wine.

Key Information • • •

Graham Kerr was recently profiled in The New York Times in January 2017 ("A Slower Pace for TV's Galloping Gourmet"). Having inspired a generation of home cooks, his influence and renown are still relevant. Kerr is alive and is eager to contribute to this reissue. Kerr's The Galloping Gourmet also inspired a generation of future TV chefs, from Emeril Lagasse to Mario Batali to Rachael Ray. Any of these chefs could be approached for blurbs and help promote the book. Though originally published in the 1960s, many aspects of the book read as forty years ahead of their time. Kerr's culinary acumen comes though in the care with which the steps are rendered, the profusion of measurement info, his implied flexibility, and in many other touches besides. This new edition of The Galloping Gourmet Cookbook features authentic recipes from a different era in culinary history. While many of today's cookbooks update classics by making them lighter or catering to contemporary food trends, this book give readers the increasingly rare opportunity to discover dishes from a different food era. The Lee Brothers are some of the most respected writers in the food world who have been hoping to bring this work back into the limelight for years. They have written a lengthy introduction and practical editor notes accompanying the recipes throughout. Their participation means their fans will want to buy this and the food press will give this serious attention. As with Princess Pamela, this reissue is about reclaiming a 20th century food talent who went missing. The difference here is that the person who went missing is still alive, and that he is someone who counted his fans in the millions back in 1966 when the book was originally published.

Door J'Adore A Celebration of the World's Most Beautiful Doors Nick Rowell There are billions of doors around the world and, just like people, each and every one is different. Doors are a barrier between reality and imagination, and the portal between private and public. And therein lies their sense of mystery: without opening them we will never know what or who lies behind them. Our curious nature leads us to wonder what is beyond, and we only have what we see in front of us to go by, but take a closer look and you will discover that every door tells its own story. Whether it’s the particular shade of paint, the texture of the finish, an extravagant knocker, the plant that scrambles around the frame or an elegantly turned handle, every door reveals the secret of its past, its present, its culture and the person who lives behind it. This book showcases a variety of beautiful doors chosen for their wide-ranging appeal and celebrates the everyday beauty of something we take for granted – doors. Publication

Pop artist Jason Mecier creates playful, insanely detailed portraits of celebrities using trash, candy, and other items, making sculptural celebrations of his subjects and our fascination with fame. Here is Amy Sedaris assembled from her own trash, David Bowie made out of cosmetics and feathers, Snoop Dogg sculpted out of weed, Justin Timberlake and Miley Cyrus crafted out of candy, and Kevin Bacon made out of bacon. The meticulously created images are as beautiful as Pop Trash they are entertaining, literally trashy and candy-coloured spotlights on the glamorous and infamous. Fun process shots detail some of the work behind the scenes (how much liquorice does it take to make Harry Potter ?), and portraits ranging from Stevie Nicks to Honey Boo Boo make the book a visual treat for pop culture and pop art fans alike

Author Details Jason Mercier creates outrageous one-of-a-kind mosaic portraits. His artwork has been featured everywhere from Entertainment Weekly to The New York Times, on TV shows like Glee, Rachael Ray and TMZ , as well as music videos by Pink and Pitbull. He lives in San Francisco.

The book will include all of his show-stopping hallmark pieces, plus less-seen and some new work, all at a good size so readers can appreciate the insane detail and visual wonder. Even if you've seen some of this stuff on an internet slide show, seeing it big is really cool. The sense of camp and humour is upfront and irresistible. If this is for you, it's really for you. The art's actually really good, and the book is large format but accessible, often literally candy-coloured = delicious fun! We're including making-of material (Jason wheeling carts of red vines through the Costco parking lot, etc) as well as fun image of celebrities with their portraits (Betty White!) to help emphasise the pop culture fun.

I Thought About It in My Head and I Felt It in My Heart but I Made It with My Hands Rob Ryan Rob Ryan's artwork – delicate, colourful, playful, and evocative – brings sophisticated layers of emotion to simple vignettes with universal appeal. A star of East London's art and design community, Ryan combines a childlike enthusiasm for colour and craft with a romantic's compulsion to explore love, desire, fantasy, and melancholy. Working principally in papercuts and stencils, and often mixing startling artistry with a raconteur's turn of phrase, he is able to create an entire world within his artwork – from the slender and telling movement of characters in his narratives to the gentle complexity of fantastical flora and fauna in his irreverent silhouettes. Each piece of work – whether it's a standalone screen-print, a single papercut from one of his intoxicating children's stories, or design objects from egg cups to Victorian-style porcelain dog figurines – is a fairytale in itself. Bright and engaging, and edited in close collaboration with the artist himself, this beautiful monograph brings together work from every facet of Ryan's career to date, and – through an accompanying text written specially for the book – explores the themes, styles, palettes, and preoccupations present throughout. Playing on familiar oppositions of isolation and creativity, alienation and warmth, even innocence and experience, Ryan's work strikes the perfect balance between humour and vulnerability, wit and wisdom.

Rob Ryan's artwork is immediately accessible, brilliantly romantic, and succeeds in many forms – from children's books to elaborate screen-prints. Rob Ryan's signature style of papercut-style artwork is proving extremely commercial. As well as books, calendars, and greeting cards, his work has appeared in storefront windows in London department stores, on design objects and collectibles available at shops and museums (eg MAD in NY), and in design collaborations with major brands such as Liberty and Paul Smith. Rob Ryan has published several children's books, including a recent trilogy through Penguin Random House, and his wall calendars have sold consistently well for Universe imprint since 2012. Rob Ryan's work is bright, romantic, colourful, and playful – so works perfectly as a gift book. Rob's work is appreciated as wonderful artwork in its own right, but his books also act as aspirational guides for artists and designers with an interest in the craft of paper cuts and sculpture.

In Mary McCartney's largest body of work to date she pays tribute to the extraordinary beauty of her white stallion, Alejandro. Over the course of four seasons McCartney captures the strength and grace of his form against an idyllic English country landscape. Using an 8x10 camera for formal portraits as well as 35mm and smartphone cameras for candid images, she profiles a year of equestrian life from on and off the saddle. These intimate pictures convey the special relationship between horse, rider, and nature, and offer a profound insight into the connection that binds us to these majestic animals. Lavishly illustrated, the reader is taken from charming stables to fields of lush green grass and the dappled light of forest trails. McCartney's unique eye paints a loving portrait of a horse and a lifestyle that continues to inspire all over the world.

Author Details Mary McCartney is an acclaimed British photographer whose work focuses on intimate portraiture and candid reportage. Exhibitions include British Style Observed (National History Museum, London, 2008); From Where I Stand (National Portrait Gallery, London, 2010); and Mother Daughter (Gagosian, 2015), a collection of photographs exploring her relationship with her mother, Linda McCartney.

Unrealism New Figurative Art Jeffrey Deitch Figuration is one of the oldest art forms, but continually evolves, along with our changing concepts of human identity. It responds to technical innovations such as printing, photography, and digital reproduction, allowing the ancient craft of rendering the figure to renew itself with each generation.

Cover coming soon!

Figuration in painting and sculpture develops in cycles. During the 2000s, the art community focused primarily on new developments in abstraction. But recently the wind has shifted, and an exciting new generation of figurative painters and sculptors emerged. The best works of this group of artists, primarily young women, are gathered on these pages along with the artist's reflections on how their practices address modernist art history, embrace the present, and look toward the future.

Today's artists are immersed in digital imagery, often sourcing images on the Internet and drawing on digital techniques in their painting process. Brushstrokes are more precise, lines are sharper, and colour is more highly keyed. The seamless collage of their compositions reflects a fluency with Photoshop. The artist's touch is more mediated, the facture more flat. The expressionism is in the image, not in the paint handling. The book's texts connect the present moment in painting to the early 1980s, when the emergence of artists like JeanMichel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel revitalised the art dialogue after the extended dissolution of Minimalism, and to its earliest formation in the work of painters like Picabia.

Jordan Wolfson Manic / Love / Truth / Love Jordan Wolfson Jordan Wolfson is an edgy contemporary multimedia artist whose work is challenging and occasionally disturbing. This book of significant new works – oversized to underscore the importance of scale and physicality in his sculptures, and published to follow their exhibition at various venues around Europe – will find a contemporary art market and share similar appeal to books by Chris Burden and Jake and Dinos Chapman. Over the past decade, Jordan Wolfson has become known for his thought-provoking works in a wide range of media, including video, sculpture, installation, photography, and performance. This impressive oversize exhibition catalogue – produced in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam – takes two of Wolfson's most recent installations as a focal point from which to explore themes and materials present throughout his work in all media. With Colored Sculpture (2016) and Female Figure (2014), shown together at the Stedelijk, Wolfson brings to the fore key aspects of his work in various media. Operating somewhere between sculpture and interactive installation, these pieces rely on Wolfson's contradictory relationship with technology to introduce animatronic and audiovisual elements to already disturbing figures: one, chained, hangs and dances from the ceiling; another is rapt in obsessive conversation with itself before a mirror. At first glance these figures seem to present a succinct view of social or technological constraint – but once they engage with viewers, turning to address gallery-goers and reciting Wolfson's challenging narratives, the perspective becomes more complex.

OBEY: Supply and Demand Shepard Fairey Rizzoli is pleased to bring back into print OBEY: Supply and Demand, Shepard Fairey's first book originally published in 2006 and slightly updated in 2009, which showcases the artist's career from his earliest art school years to the creation of his famous Obama HOPE and CHANGE posters and is the perfect pendant to Rizzoli's first Shepard Fairey collaboration Covert to Overt. Showcasing Fairey's entire body of work, from his early OBEY Giant campaign to his prodigious print output, increasingly ambitious large scale street work and beyond, this massive retrospective covers 20 colourful years. Fairey helped catalyse a movement from his unique vantage at the intersection of art, popular culture and design and this time documents it all. Through the lens of esteemed writers and critics such as Carlo McCormick, Steven Heller, Henry Rollins, Rob Walker, Roger Gastman and more, readers can learn about Shepard Fairey, the roots of the omnipresent OBEY street art campaign, his design practice and prolific gallery exhibitions. This massive book pulls no punches and all areas of the enigmatic artist's work, travels and travails are illuminated. From exhibitions, posters, flyers, silkscreens and stickers to high altitude pursuits, citations and police beatings, it's all documented in a museum quality layout and binding. The evidence is in, and it's clear that Shepard Fairey is not one to rest on his laurels, the work must go on. For both longtime fans wanting the complete collection and those just curious to know what this OBEY business is all about, Supply and Demand is the answer. Publication

Author Details Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer activist and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. He is best known for his Barack Obama "Hope" poster, which he created in support of the 2008 presidential campaign. His work has been included in the collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Shepard Fairey achieved tremendous street cred while he was a RISD student in the 1990s, blanketing the Eastern Seaboard (and eventually beyond) with his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" stickers; the image subsequently evolved into his OBEY brand logo Fairey's cultural reach goes far beyond urban street culture. Walk down Main Street in Anytown, USA, and it's likely you'll see someone wearing an OBEY logo shirt, jacket, or hat. Simply put: Shepard Fairey's art and apparel sells. His artwork cleverly incorporates political themes, music, and pop cultural zeitgeist – the Obama Hope poster being a shining example – giving it a strong cultural appeal that stretches well beyond the art world. Fairey's book OBEY: Supply and Demand has sold more than 20,000 copies since its publication in 2006. It's out of print, but there is still sustained demand for this title. Rizzoli's book Covert to Overt picks up on Shepard's prolific career since 2009 and has reprinted twice since its publication.

The Ardlamont Mystery The Real-Life Story Behind the Creation of Sherlock Holmes The true story of the men – Joseph Bell and Henry Littlejohn – who inspired the creation of Sherlock Holmes. The Ardlamont murder trial, which took place in Edinburgh's High Court in December 1893, was the culmination of one of the most intriguing criminal cases in British legal history. But perhaps more remarkable than that was that it brought together the two principal real-life inspirations behind the creation of the world’s favourite fictional consulting detective: Sherlock Holmes. Joseph Bell and Henry Littlejohn were Professors of Medicine at Edinburgh University. As educators, medical trailblazers and social reformers, the two friends were pioneers in the emerging world of forensic science, and both were called as expert witnesses at the Ardlamont murder trial. Under their tutelage had been a young student named Arthur Conan Doyle. He had served as an assistant to Bell, where he was able to scrutinise at first-hand Bell’s remarkable deductive powers. In fact, Conan Doyle went on to say of Bell: ‘It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes . . .’ Author Daniel Smith, using original trial transcripts, contemporary newspaper reports, personal papers and other archive material, represents and re-examines evidence of the Ardlamont case, coming to his own conclusion as to just what happened in 1893. This intriguing book also details the story of the trial itself and the parts played by Bell and Littlejohn as they opened the door to a pivotal period in the development of criminal investigation and forensic science, as well as providing an insight into the genesis of one of our greatest cultural icons.

How to Behave Badly in Renaissance Britain Ruth Goodman This is a history of offensive language, insulting gestures, insolent behaviour, brawling and scandal in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with practical tips on just how to horrify the neighbours. Every age and every social strata has its bad eggs, those who break all the rules and rub everyone up the wrong way. This is not a history of criminal behaviour as such, although some of the activities in this book shade into the legally dubious; rather, it is a study of the niggling, anti-social, irritating ways that people have kicked back against prevailing social mores. Drunkards, swashbucklers and harridans rub shoulders with people with disgusting table manners and neighbours whose dung heaps and noise drove others crazy. Historian and popular TV presenter Ruth Goodman draws upon advice books and manuals, court cases and sermons, drama and imagery to outline bad behaviour from the gauche to the galling, the subtle to the outrageous. Ruth will explore the details of those behaviours, such as just how far apart your feet should be if you wish to mock a soldier or how to parody the walk of a preacher to the amusement of your friends and if you do blow your nose during dinner how to put everyone off their food. The Mysteries of History Graeme Donald As this intriguing book reveals, the greatest mysteries of history centre on who invents such false accounts in the first place, how they gain traction so quickly and why others are so willing – anxious, even – to believe them. As Napoleon once observed, history is largely a set of lies agreed upon by the winners and, once a lie attains the dignity of age, it becomes the truth. As everyone knows, Cleopatra was an Egyptian of considerable beauty who died in a snaky embrace; Marco Polo travelled to China to become Kublai Khan’s right-hand-man; Pope Joan was a medieval woman who fooled the Catholic Church; Joan of Arc was a French military leader; and The Great Fire of Rome was started by Nero to clear the way for his urban re-development of the city … Well, no, actually.

To take those in order: Cleo was a Greek with a face belying generations of inbreeding who poisoned herself; Marco Polo got no further than Turkey, where he sat picking the brains of those who had actually been to China; there was no female Pope; the so-called Joan of Arc – if she existed at all – never led any French army; and as Nero said all along, it was the Christians who torched the city. Hand lettering is making a massive comeback, bursting out of its graphic-design bubble and finding a mainstream via collecting social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest. The avid resurrected interest in hand lettering seemingly goes hand in hand with the weariness audiences feel with constant slick digital presentation of the information they consume. Hand lettering has a compelling appeal, and is a kind of pushback against the impersonal machine-made digital environment. Goodtype's The Art of Lettering collects myriad new and established graphic designers for whom hand lettering is a time-honoured art that has modern applications. Showcasing several artists from all over the world, the book displays their typographical takes and illustrates their perfectly imperfect hand-crafted art, from beautiful photographs of concept sketches to end result. Sometimes straying away from traditional pen-calligraphy, artists today employ new and creative approaches, including building type with coffee grounds, watercolours; and combinations of different hand tools, resulting in a dynamically fresh approach to creating type. Equal parts inspiring and innovative, Goodtype's The Art of Lettering appeals to graphic designers, artists, and type enthusiasts alike.

Author Details Brooke Robinson is a Austin, Texas-based graphic designer and also director of Marketing and Graphics at Tyler's, a retailer in Austin, Texas. She is responsible for leading all graphic design and marketing initiatives, including radio, print, television, internet/social, public, sales, and special events at all six Tyler's locations in Texas. Robinson has had the pleasure of designing limited edition TOMS shoes for the Tyler's x TOMS collaboration three years in a row. In this irresistible marriage of watercolorist’s sketchbook and traveler’s guide, Virginia Johnson lovingly captures the magic of one of the world’s most storied regions, the French Riviera. We walk the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Shop for handmade sandals at Rondini in Saint-Tropez. Visit the Madoura workshop in Antibes, where Picasso discovered his genius for pottery. Meet legendary characters like Pierre Gruneberg, a swimming instructor who taught Jean Cocteau, Brigitte Bardot, Paul McCartney, and many others. Saturated with the limpid colors of sea and sun, the dazzling greens of verdant gardens, and the rose and ochre of sunbaked villas and joyous with paisleys and blue-striped sailor’s shirts and the riotous look of a patisserie window filled with confections, Travels Through the French Riviera is a gift book of visual wonder, the souvenir every Francophile will want. But it is also a quirky yet singularly useful travel guide, whether showing how to order coffee like a local, plan a beach day at Menton, or hike the Cap Ferrat peninsula or where to taste the best ice cream in Antibes (at Amarena—try the mint).

Author Details Virginia Johnson is a Canadian artist and textile designer. Her collections of colorful prints on clothing, shawls, and home accessories have been sold around the world in stores including Anthropologie, Barneys, Holt Renfrew, Liberty London, and J.Crew. She also illustrated a series of books for Kate Spade and The Perfectly Imperfect Home for Deborah Needleman. Johnson lives with her husband and two children in Toronto, Canada.

Key Information • • • • •

The French lifestyle, long exemplified by the splendid coast of the Riviera, is the original aspirational lifestyle whose popularity has never waned—French lifestyle books continue to sell year in and year out. From what to wear and where to stay to how to blend in like a local, this book can and should be used as a dayto-day guide to planning a trip to the region. The author captures the magic of the French Riviera with nearly 200 original illustrations. Ethereal, colorful, feminine, fashiony, friendly—the illustrations are perfectly suited to their subject. The author is a well-known textile designer and illustrator: Virginia Johnson has worked as an accessories designer for Helmut Lang and as an illustrator for Kate Spade. Strong gift-market potential, complete with a romantic, tactile, journal-like package, plus a ribbon.

He has a penchant for long aimless walks and an imaginary dog named Barchibald.

Key Information •

Aspirational creativity continues to find a wide audience. And the appeal of minimalism is growing as everyone, creatives included, burns out on productivity and consumerism. This book captures the zeitgeist by promising that doing less and clearing a cluttered mind can lead to new perspectives and great ideas. The people quoted throughout the book range across the cultural spectrum, from Virginia Woolf to Nicki Minaj. Readers of all tastes and creatives working in any medium will both recognise favourites and discover new directions. And Muradov's prescriptions for cultivating idleness are easy to adopt: take a long walk without a destination, sink into a simple creative exercise without trying to be original, or simply enjoy the quiet, in-between moment of an elevator ride. With its playful tone, this book offers a thought-provoking read but steers clear of earnest self-help, making it a welcome gift for anyone who aspires to creativity or is just stressed out. The colourful illustrations and distinctive format – a petite hardcover with elegant thin boards – add to its charm.

Francis: The People's Pope Vincenzo Sansonetti The essential thoughts of Pope Francis on matters of faith and conscience have been culled from his published works, speeches, homilies, and statements and collected in one handsomely illustrated volume, with photographs from the first year of his groundbreaking, transformational papacy. This book is the perfect gift or inspirational self-purchase for Roman Catholics and anyone interested in the evolution of the Church and Christian faith. This handsomely illustrated volume pairs inspiring photographs of the first year of Pope Francis's papacy with quotations from his published works, interviews, and homilies about his transformational vision for the Church and humanity itself. Much of the world was awestruck and surprised when Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was elected Pope Francis, for as Bishop of Buenos Aires and later Cardinal, Bergolgio had long espoused a more tolerant and welcoming vision of the Church. Pope Francis has been called the "pope of the people" as he captures the minds and hearts with his joyful faith, with his warm, direct, and loving attention to those he meets, and with his attention to the poor, the needy, the outcast, and those who are different or have been somehow left behind by society. Pope Francis has spoken movingly about his spiritual life, his hopes for church reform, his open-minded stance toward gays and lesbians, his views on women – and even his favourite movies. The images and words in this inspiring volume reflect the warm pastoral style of Pope Francis and cover themes that he frequently touches upon in public discourse – the mercy of God, the scandal of poverty, the need for tolerance, and the challenge to become true disciples of Jesus and not "part-time Christians".

Vincenzo Sansonetti is a journalist and writer. From 1976 to 1989 he was the editor of the religious and cultural information section for the newspaper Avvenire and then for the weekly magazine Oggi , as well as curator of a series of special issues of religious theme. He now writes for the magazine Il Timone . He is the author of numerous books on religious themes.

This handsome volume is designed to be treasured for years to come and will fill Catholics and non-Catholics alike with hope, making a thoughtful and beautiful gift to be read again and again as a constant source of faith, understanding, and spiritual renewal.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, is the 266th and current Pope at the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio was ordained in 1969, became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and was made Cardinal in 2001. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013, Bergoglio was elected as his successor on March 13th. He chose his papal name in honour of St. Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit Pope, the first Pope from the New World, the first Pope from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first nonEuropean Pope since Pope Gregory III (who hailed from Syria) 1,272 years earlier.

The first collection of the new Pope's writings paired with inspirational photographs from the first years of his revolutionary papacy. Interest in the papacy is running high – the Vatican has reported a surge in items purchased in their shops correlating to interest in the Pope and his message of tolerance. There are roughly over 78 million Catholics in the US. This is the first Pope from Spanish-speaking Latin America which should generate interest among the over 53 million Americans of Hispanic origin. Of interest even to non-Catholics because the life and transformative message of this Pope have touched many subjects that are currently social and political issues worldwide like inequality and tolerance.
