elcome to winter at Burnside Village. It’s the time of the year when drinks are hot, food is comforting and fashion takes centre stage. Throughout this issue, you’ll find all of the amazing fashion now available at Burnside Village. With so many exciting new fashion stores open, now there really is something here for everyone and for every occasion, and we’re pleased to showcase so much of it in this issue of The Vine. In winter, everyone tends to pull out his or her easy-to-wear, dark clothes. However, our Glam Noir fashion shoot demonstrates that wearing black does not have to be boring! Featuring beautiful textures and embellished fabrics, black is transformed into pure decadence. We would like to thank the Burnside Council for allowing us to shoot at Burnside Town Hall, which provided an evocative backdrop for our fashions. This season, sixties fashion has also returned in full swing and our Mod Squad spread will show you that this trend can easily be worn by all. Whether it is a felt wide-brimmed hat or a pair of cuffed chinos, you can find all your sixties inspired fashion at Burnside Village. We also feature some of the best kids’ fashion in our Forest Babes feature, highlighting the wonderful range of great looks for boys and girls now available at Burnside Village. Of course, we haven’t forgotten to include amazing winter warmer recipes. With thanks to Hilton Adelaide’s Executive Chef Dennis Leslie and Sprout’s Callum Hann, you will find three-course meals that you can make at home to rival any restaurant. And to make it even easier, all ingredients are easily found at the Village Market retailers. Plus there’s an enticing array of products on show in must haves, beauty and health tips from our stores and all the latest Burnside Village news. With our new Tree Mall now open and trading, everything you need this winter is available under one roof. Enjoy your visits and enjoy the read!

FROM PARIS, WITH LOVE

The Village is now home to a work of art from the city of lights itself. Direct from the Modus Gallery in Paris, Frivole is a bronze sculpture crafted by French artist Françoise Abraham. Known for her elongated shapes full of sensuality and tenderness, Abraham’s ‘Frivole’ captures the feminine figure in an energetic and curious way. Unveiled at the official opening of the Stage 3 Development, the sculpture will remain at the Village and be the focal point of the Burnside Village Sculpture Competition in August this year.

SYDNEY STREET

has refurbished their Atrium store! Check it out next time you’re here, it really is stunning. www.sydneystreet.com.au

Sustainable shopping Burnside Village has yet again set the bar high, scoring a four-star Green Star Design Energy Rating. The innovative rainwater storage system, located in the basement, collects water from the striking new roof and reticulates it to the public amenities for toilet flushing and also to several irrigation points – including the system that feeds our tree! The system provides 90% of the total flushing and irrigation demand.

BEWITCHED KIDS Australian fashion brand Witchery has announced the launch of 8fourteen, a new must-have collection for the next generation of budding fashionistas. Autumn/Winter 2012 is the launch collection, with statement pieces using velvet, cord, fringing and lace and highlight pieces such as knitted dresses, spotted tights and fur-trim hats. Focused on 8-14 year old girls, the collection incorporates a playful mix of textures, patterns and fashion-forward styles. Winner of last year’s Australia’s Next Top Model, Montana Cox, fronts the campaign, alongside younger models. Kids have never been more stylish.

SCRUPLES If you want European catwalk looks

to fill your wardrobe, make sure you visit Scruples at the front of Burnside Village!

our river red gum THIS MAJESTIC TREE PROVIDES A TRANQUIL ENVIRONMENT FOR SHOPPERS AT BURNSIDE Visitors to our atrium have been enjoying the majestic presence of our river red gum, which is doing well in its new indoor environment. After shading the carpark of the Village for many years, the redevelopment saw the tree move inside. Aborman Tree Solutions director and aborist Marcus Lodge says the process has been quite an adjustment for the 100-year-old tree. “We have essentially changed the atmosphere around the tree: taking it from an open, natural air space to an unnatural one, which has changed everything from the wind contact to the way the light hits the tree,” he says. “I don’t think anyone has ever done this before.” Marcus has been looking after the tree for around 15 years, first consulting with Burnside on the tree in 1997. He has since become the main caretaker of this gentle giant, helping the tree adapt to its new home and stay happy and healthy. “The tree is going well considering it has been undergoing significant change. It is healthy and responding well to the treatment.” This treatment includes regular pruning and

14

canopy management to compensate for factors such as lack of wind and some treatment of the root zone. The tree has its own water supply and a specially designed pop-top roof to help it flourish. Marcus and others from his team of arborists visit the tree every fortnight, and tidy the canopy every six weeks, with specific treatments for things such as insecticide. The tree has the same life expectancy as most river red gums, which is an astonishing 600 years. Having the tree watch over the Village creates a beautiful, tranquil atmosphere for visitors and is the perfect spot to enjoy time out while shopping. However, this is just one of the positive effects of maintaining this stately tree. “It’s important to preserve trees on development sites so we can preserve some sort of urban forest,” Marcus says. “It’s good for the environment. The whole process has also drawn attention to tree preservation, so it’s a good education tool.” For more updates on the tree, visit www.burnsidevillage. com.au

Zara

W O R L D

The global brand has made its way to Adelaide and is calling Burnside Village home. The Zara fashion label is known for its dedication to bringing the latest runway styles to customers quickly and at affordable prices. Late last year, Adelaide was abuzz with excitement when the Spanish fashion giant made Burnside Village its home - its third Australian store after Sydney and Melbourne. The retailer has been creating excitement wherever they go since opening their first store in 1975 in La Coruna in northern Spain. Since then, Zara has grown to more than 1700 stores in 78 countries, employs more than 200 designers, producing collections twice a week. The design teams at Zara draw inspiration from current fashion trends and street fashion while paying close attention to what Zara shoppers want. And while they stock the same fashion collections in all of the stores, each is customised to the location to ensure products fit what customers really want. Zara achieves this by looking at each store as an individual project and works quickly to adapt to the tastes of their local customers – and it is easy to do when merchandise in the store is updated at least once a week! Of course, it’s not just about the clothes. Zara also provides a great shopping experience. The Adelaide store plays host to a new, updated store look: simple, elegant and sophisticated, it provides shoppers with a great space to be in while browsing the Zara collections.

Some of Australia’s most celebrated labels have landed in the Village, with stellar new collections that are sure to heat up your wardrobe this season.

SABA SABA is a chic, contemporary label for both men and women, opening at Burnside in the new Tree Mall just in time for AW 2012. Beginning in 1965 in Melbourne, the brand has powered to the forefront of Australian Fashion with over 50 stores across the country. Creating beautiful outlines with quality fabrics is the signature of their designs and ongoing success. This season, SABA has a fresh take on mod dressing, featuring splashes of bold colour and sharp, edgy silhouettes. Their latest collection ‘A New Dimension’ embodies effortless style, injected heavily with shades of mustard and cherry. Whether you’re off to work or out for the night, SABA is sure to bring versatility, comfort and class to your winter wardrobe.

WILLOW Celebrating the fusion between fashion and art, WILLOW made its debut at Australian Fashion Week in 2003 and has since taken off globally. WILLOW’s collections are sold worldwide, with British Vogue declaring founder Kit Willow a ‘talent set to last’. As a young girl, Kit was captivated by fashion and how clothes are used as a means of expression. She describes her label as timeless, gutsy, strong, elegant and imperfect. Primarily, WILLOW is known for its unique designs, quality and longevity. Each garment creates a modern yet chic silhouette with draping forming a carefree elegance. Beautiful fabrics are mixed with eccentric colours to conjure up glamour and desire. The AW12 collection ‘Monarch Movement’ was inspired by the Monarch butterfly, with its bold colour combination of orange and black, curved wingspan and graphic motif. Find the collection here at the Village, the very first standalone store in South Australia.

fashion forecast

Fashion editor Deni Jones outlines two of the biggest trends for the season.

“Take the Mod look all the way to rockabilly with leather pants and a fur jacket.”

Mod

This season’s Mod trend is all about channelling your inner Twiggy, as fashion takes us back to an age of revolution, freedom and change. A swinging sixties vibe is seeping into stores – think A-line skirts and QHJRL[ZÄ[[LK[\Y[SLULJRQ\TWLYZ [HPSVYLKWHU[Z[\UPJKYLZZLZ VWHX\L[PNO[ZZVJRZHUKIYVN\LZ *VSV\YPZT\[LK¶^P[O^HYT ZOHKLZVMT\Z[HYK[HUHUKVYHUNL KVTPUH[PUN[OPZ[YLUK¶PUZX\HYLK VMMNYHWOPJWH[[LYUZWHY[PJ\SHYS`VU JVH[ZHUKZRPY[ZVM]HYPLKOLTSPULZ ;L_[\YLPZIPNZLLUWYLKVTPUHU[S` in wool, felt and patent leather, WHY[PJ\SHYS`PUZOVLZHUKIHNZ ;VNL[[OLSVVR[LHTHU(SPUL skirt with a Peter-Pan-collared shirt HUKJ\[LQ\TWLY(JJLZZVYPZL^P[O HWH[LU[ZX\HYLKVMMIHNYV\UK V]LYZPaLKZOHKLZHUKÄUHSS`HNYLH[ WHPYVMRULLOPNOIVV[Z Be daring and take the Mod look all [OL^H`[VYVJRHIPSS`^P[OSLH[OLY WHU[ZHUKHM\YQHJRL[:WSHZOVU ZVTLTHZJHYH[VJVTWSL[L`V\Y Z^PUNPUNZP_[PLZLUZLTISL -VY[OLN\`ZZ[HY[^P[O[HPSVYLK JOPUVWHU[ZWHPY^P[OIYVN\LZHUK ZVJRZHUKJYVZZ[OLIV\UKHY` [V^HYKZWYLWW`4VK

“This truly romantic glamour is a look that can transform your look from day to night.”

Noir Noir is strong yet beautiful, exaggerated yet silently elegant. It is not just black – it’s the textures that make this timeless colour so undeniably strong. Influenced by the innocence and beauty of 1940’s cinema, noir is all about bringing out a sexy edge with luxurious detailing and sharp silhouettes. This truly romantic glamour is a look that can transform your look from day to night. Go effortless during the day in slimline tuxedo pants and jacket. For night, go for a saucy movie star look by adding a fur stole and black pumps. The easiest way to update your wardrobe to achieve this look is with accessories. Oversized jewels and embellished necklaces in dark, coloured metals are big this winter, and will instantly give your outfit a dose of glam. The great thing about this easily accessible trend is that it works for all ages and body types, and is all about great sculptured tailoring.

winter beauty

Cool, wet days can take their toll on hair and skin. Some of our favourite stores share the latest trends and beauty tips to keep you looking great.

Smoky eyes Winter is all about smoky eyes, but this year’s look throws in a shot of colour. Make Up Store’s Megan Hand recommends using a navy blue eyeshadow with a slight metallic ďŹ nish to make your eyes really pop. To get the look, balance with a nude tone applied to the inner rim, says Mecca Cosmetica’s head of artistry and colour Tony Baumann. Start by smudging a blend of black and navy liner around the lash line (black closest to the lashes then layer navy eye shadow straight over the top). Finish with some nude liner in the inner rim and mascara. Balance cheeks and lips with a barely there neutral pink. Microshadow (left) in ‘Tuch’ and eye pencil (above) in ‘Deep Blue Sea’, $34 Make Up Store.

PERFECT PLUM For the hottest looks this season, go for a rich, deep plum. Make Up Store’s Megan Hand says sexy, chic and right on trend, a plum nail polish or lipstick is the perfect way to lift your look. Battleship grey is the other hot colour for nails, says Mecca’s Tony Baumann. “It goes with everything and looks amazing against any skin tone.â€? He recommends applying two coats for an VWHX\LĂ„UPZO3PWZ[PJRPUÂş4HNPJÂťYPNO[ HUKUHPS WVSPZOPUÂş:LSTHÂťMHYYPNO[ Make Up Store, nail JVSV\YPUÂş:TVRL`ÂťJLU[YL Mecca Cosmetica.

NIGHT TREAT Clinique has launched a new overnight moisturiser to put the brightness back in your skin. Turnaround Overnight Radiance Moisturiser is a soft, oil-free serum that gently replaces worn-out surface cells with livelier ones for instant results. Pop in for a free consultation. $90, The Village Pharmacy.

HANDS UP Apicare New Zealand’s Very Hard Workers handcreme is a thick beeswax balm packed with sweet almond and botanical oils to replace oils in your skin. It’s also great for knees, elbows and heels. $17.95, Lindsay Allan Chemist.

Luscious lips Keep lips protected from winter chills with a lip treatment or balm, and gently exfoliate twice a week to remove dead skin cells and keep lips looking their best, says Make Up Store’s Megan Hand. Lip Care Mix (below) – a lip exfoliant, treatment and gloss – is the musthave product for your handbag. $35, Make Up Store.

COVER UP Air-brushed foundation is the big look for a flawless finish, says Mecca’s Tony Baumann. “Think satin matte with a velvet texture and a soft powdery smooth finish,” he says. It gives fuller coverage that’s ideal for winter and protects your skin. Keep an eye out for Hourglass Immaculate Foundation (above), launching at Mecca Cosmetica in May, $78.

SMOOTH SKIN Cleansing milks moisturise the skin while cleaning, making them ideal for cooler weather, says Make Up Store’s Megan Hand. She recommends using a treatment mask twice a week to give the skin an injection of moisture. To combat the effects of indoor heating, finish with a slightly richer moisturiser than what you use in the warm weather. To prevent flaking, Mecca’s Tony Baumann recommends using Hollywood facialist Kate Somerville’s face serum over moisturiser. To soften the look of foundation, he suggests patting a tiny amount around the eyes after applying foundation. Soothing Cleansing Milk, The Crème (far right), $90, Make Up Store. Quench Hydrating Face Serum (right), $75, Mecca Cosmetica.

Skin essentials

RADIANT BEAUTY Keep your skin looking radiant this winter with products that protect against moisture loss and smooth skin.

s$OUBLESTRENGTHDEEP WRINKLElLLERHELPS instantly disguise wrinkles and reduces them in the long term. From $68, Kiehl’s.

For perfect winter skin, follow these tips from Jurlique’s Chelsea Kerwick. Cleanse Opt for cleansing lotions and milk cleansers. Cleansers packed with plantbased oils such as jojoba, macadamia and avocado oils will remove makeup without stripping the skin of its natural sebum. Exfoliate Exfoliation removes dry, peeling skin for a fresher, brighter complexion and helps your skin absorb serums and moisturisers. Use a gentle exfoliating cleanser at least twice a week in dry months. Jurlique’s Body Exfoliating Gel is rich in herbal antioxidants and lifts away dead skin cells and impurities for smooth, soft and more radiant skin. Treatment oil/serum Featuring an abundance of antioxidants, powerfully potent serums offer remarkable results in minimal time. Jurlique’s Skin Balancing Face Oil is lightweight yet highly effective. Wear it beneath your moisturiser or apply under a mask to guard against moisture loss and improve skin elasticity.

30

Moisturise Winter calls for richer, performance-plus moisturisers to help plump the skin, hydrate and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Jurlique’s Purely Age-Defying Ultra Firm and Lift Cream is a high performance anti-ageing cream that promotes the regeneration of elastin, collagen and new skin cells. Mask Opt for masks that are designed for winter or dry and dehydrated skin. Use a gentle hydrating mask to hydrate and soften dry skin, such as Jurlique’s Moisture Replenishing Mask, which also provides antioxidant protection. Treat your body For the ultimate reenergising body experience, treat yourself to a full body revitalising treatment: it starts with a quick dry brushing followed by a relaxing massage and finishes with a personalised facial designed to rebalance your skin’s health. $115/1hr. Above left to right: Moisturising Replenishing Mask $95/125ml, Skin Balancing Face Oil $62/50ml, Purely Age-Defying Ultra Firm and Lift Cream $90/50ml.

village cookbook Chilli pork ribs Chilli and pork go so well together – perfect for cosy winter days. If you don’t want too much heat, discard the chilli seeds prior to adding to the dish. By Dennis Leslie 2.5kg young pork ribs, cut into individual ribs 8L water 1 cup light soy 1 tbsp black peppercorns 1 brown onion, peeled and cut into rough wedges 1 tbsp vegetable oil 3 birdseye chillies, sliced into thin rings 1 bunch spring onions, sliced into thin rings 2 cloves garlic, crushed and finely chopped 2 tbsp ketcup manis sea salt, seasoning to taste cracked white pepper, seasoning to taste

Callum’s menu Thai chicken and broccoli noodle soup

Place water in a large pot along with the light soy, black peppercorns and chopped brown onions to make a cooking stock. Take the stock up to boiling point then down to simmer for about 20 minutes.

Lamb shank and red wine casserole with orange gremolata Pear frangipani tarts with cardamom yoghurt

Add the pork ribs into the stock and simmer for 20 minutes or until the meat starts to gently fall off the bone. Strain the pork ribs and allow to drain in a colander, then place the ribs on paper towel and dab them dry.

Callum Hann is co-owner of Sprout cooking school and author of The Starter Kitchen.

Photography David Sievers

Heat a wok on high heat and allow to heat up until the surface of the wok starts to smoke a little. Add vegetable oil and allow to heat up for 10 seconds. Add the dried ribs to the wok, browning all sides. Add the spring onions and toss them through. Add garlic and toss through and allow to cook while stirring for about 10 seconds. Add chilli and toss through, continue to stir fry for another 10 seconds. Add ketcup manis and toss through until evenly coated. Season with sea salt and white pepper then serve.

Thai chicken and broccoli noodle soup The chicken is poached on the carcass which makes the meat incredibly juicy and tender, and is delicious served in the fragrant broth. Any leftover meat is great in salads or on sandwiches. Leftover broth freezes well and can be used in the same way as chicken stock. By Callum Hann 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 bunch coriander, stems sliced, leaves reserved for serving 6 cloves garlic, sliced thumb-sized piece of ginger, sliced 2 sticks lemongrass, sliced (optional) 1.4kg whole chicken ½ cup soy sauce 2 tbsp fish sauce 2 tbsp brown sugar 4 star anise (optional) 6 spring onions 1 head broccoli, cut into florets dried noodles, to serve (I like Japanese Somen)

Heat a large saucepan (big enough to fit the chicken in) over medium heat. Add oil, then coriander stems, garlic, ginger and lemongrass (if using). When starting to turn golden, add the chicken breast-side down and add around 2L of water or enough to just cover. Add soy sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, star anise and 2 whole spring onions. Bring to the boil on a high heat, then immediately turn down heat and simmer gently for an hour and 15 minutes or until chicken is soft and the leg meat is almost falling off the bone. It should be a really gentle simmer, just the odd bubble is perfect. Carefully lift chicken out of the pot with tongs, reserving liquid. Allow the chicken to cool enough to handle. Meanwhile, cook noodles according to packet directions, drain, and blanch broccoli in boiling water until just tender. Drain well. Slice remaining spring onions finely on an angle. Coarsely shred chicken meat from the carcass. Strain reserved liquid and discard solids. Divide noodles, broccoli and chicken meat among bowls, ladel in broth. Scatter over sliced spring onions and coriander leaves to serve.

Lamb shank and red wine casserole with orange gremolata Slow cooking the shanks makes them tender and the sauce flavoursome. If you have a slow cooker, start the shanks and vegetables in a frying pan, then put all ingredients to the cooker and let it cook for the best part of the day. By Callum Hann 4 lamb shanks ¼ cup flour 4 tbsp vegetable oil 2 leeks, washed and sliced 2 carrots, sliced 3 sticks celery 4 cloves garlic, halved 2 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped 2/3 cup red wine 2 x 400g can chopped tomatoes salt and pepper, to taste 2 cups beef stock

Orange gremolata ½ bunch flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped finely grated zest of 1 orange 1 cloved garlic, chopped as finely as possible

Combine lamb shanks and flour in a disposable plastic bag. Shake bag to coat lamb in flour. Heat a large heavy-based casserole dish over high heat. Add 2 tablespoons of the oil. Dust any excess flour from shanks. Add 2 shanks and cook, turning occasionally, until browned all over. Remove shanks form pan and set aside. Repeat with remaining shanks. Using tongs and several pieces of paper towel, carefully wipe out pan. Add remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Add leeks, carrot, garlic and rosemary. Cook, stirring regularly, for 10 minutes or until leek has softened.

Add 2 cups of stock, ensuring shanks are covered in liquid. Bring to a simmer, then turn heat to low and cover. Cook for 4 hours or until the meat is falling from the bone. The pot should be at a very gentle simmer, just the odd bubble. Remove lid, remove shanks from liquid and set aside. Increase heat and simmer sauce for 15 minutes or until thickened slightly. Meanwhile, combine all gremolata ingredients in a small bowl. Add shanks back into sauce. Serve casserole with gremolata over the top. Angel hair pasta, chorizo, prawns, cherry tomato, basil and shaved parmesan Pasta makes a hearty winter dish as a meal on its own or can be served in small portions as an entree. By Dennis Leslie 500g angel hair pasta 2 each chorizo sausage, taken out of casing and broken up 500ml white wine 1kg mussels 200g prawns, peeled and de-veined 2 punnet cherry tomatoes, cut in half ½ bunch fresh basil, picked 150g shaved parmesan (shave with peeler) 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 large onion, cut into small squares sea salt black pepper extra virgin olive oil

Boil water in a large pot for the pasta; add about 3 tablespoons of salt per litre of water. When the water is boiling, add pasta, making sure you break them up so they don’t clump together as it cooks. Heat up a large pan that has a tight-fitting lid on high heat until it starts to slightly smoke. Add mussels, toss through quickly. Remove from heat and add the wine around the edge of the pan. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for about 5 minutes on high heat. Do not take the lid off as the steam is important to open the mussels. Once all the mussels have opened, pour them into a colander with a bowl underneath to catch the liquor. Place the same pan on the high heat again. When the pan is hot, add about 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Add the onions and sauté for a minute. Add the sausage and continue to sauté, without colour, for about 2 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute or so or until the rawness ‘smell’ is out of the garlic, taking care not to get the pan too hot at this point otherwise the garlic will burn.

Strain your pasta well and add to the pan. Toss through until evenly distributed. Season with sea salt and black pepper.

Photography David Sievers

Add the tomatoes and cook until it starts to break down a little. Add the mussels and mussel liquor to cook for a further minute. Add the prawns and allow to cook until they are about 60% cooked through.

Tear basil and toss through. Serve in a pasta bowl. Garnish with shaved parmesan and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Serve with crusty bread. (from The Brasserie e-cookbook, download a free copy from www. thebrasserie.com.au/cookbook-recipes)

bigreds

Warm up your winter with these hearty reds. Vintage Cellars share their top five.

1 LA LINEA TEMPRANILLO $28 Tempranillo is Spain’s great red wine grape variety and is taking hold here in South Australia. This Adelaide Hills tempranillo is a medium-bodied wine with bright and fragrant aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries and mulberries. It has a lively mouth feel and distinctive gritty yet fine tannins on the finish. Food match: perfect with tapas

2 DUTSCHKE GODS HILL ROAD SHIRAZ $25 Shiraz is always popular in cool weather and this is a beautiful, ripe and full-flavoured wine, with a lovely soft mouth feel and characteristics of ripe blueberries. It was awarded 94 points by James Halliday in the 2012 Wine Companion. Food match: enjoy on a cold night with lamb shanks or a thick Italian ragu

3 HEARTLAND DIRECTORS CUT SHIRAZ $39.99

4 D’ARENBERG ‘THE IRONSTONE PRESSINGS’ GSM $79.99

5 PARKER FIRST GROWTH CABERNET SAUVIGNON $131.99

This is definitely a wine to be sat down and enjoyed on its own. A very exciting shiraz with rich chocolate aromas followed by an explosion of cassis and spiced plum on the palate with a long satisfying finish. Lovers of oaked chardonnay will fall head over heels for this delicious red. Food match: a cheese platter (served preferrably in front of an open fire)

For those looking for something a little different, try this McLaren Vale grenache, shiraz, mouvedre blend. A graceful wine with an alluring red berry, cinnamon nose continuing into the palate, complemented with savoury dried herbs and spices for a balanced elegant structure. If you have the patience, this will reward for up to 20 years with careful cellaring. Food match: steak and kidney pie

A very special cabernet sauvignon from this premium producer in the Coonawarra. Regarded as one of the greatest examples of what this region can produce, it begins with intense blackberry and mineral overtones flowing into an elegant palate and lingering fine tannins, which is admired in quality cabernet sauvignon. One to savour and enjoy. Food match: rich lamb casserole

Eat well move well Winter for most of us involves warm food and lazy weekends indoors. We move less but eat more, and the result is an expanding waistline. Don’t let your winter comforts result in an upward shift on the scales. Stews, soups and slow-cooked meals are more popular in the cooler months. Roast vegetables, gravy, meats and warm desserts sneak their way onto winter menus. Be aware of what you are eating and don’t forget moderation. Ensure variety in your diet and cooking techniques. You may prefer to eat hot vegetables over cold salads but don’t just roast or mash them – remember that you can blanch, boil, steam and stir-fry vegetables too. s Just because you rug up, don’t let your diet and exercise slip. Cold weather might mean warmer food but this can still be healthy and balanced. s Be aware of hidden calories in casseroles from butters, oils, creams and milk. These ‘extras’ add to the texture and flavour but also the calories and they don’t fill us up. Add plenty of vegetables and don’t overdo the meat. s Soups are a great low-energy winter lunch or dinner. You can make them in advance as they keep for days when refrigerated. Vegetable and minestrone soups are a great way to squeeze an extra serve of veggies into your diet. s Don’t overdo warm beverages such as cafĂŠ lattĂŠs, milky Milo or hot chocolates. Regular versions of these provide about 705kj, 770kj and 1030kj respectively. Choose tea or black coffee instead. s Don’t let the cooler weather put a dampener on your exercise routine. Exercise will help you maintain your weight and feel more energised. Our bodies still need vitamin D, which is crucial for calcium.

Look stylish while you’re protecting your eyes – make sure you see the latest range of stunning Tiffany & Co. sunglasses recently launched at Laubman & Pank.

When we think of winter we often conjure up images of stuffy noses, coughing and tired, lethargic faces. It doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, we are all designed to express health and vitality regardless of the seasons. So before it’s too late, have a look at these winter health boosters and get ready for a happier, healthier and more vibrant winter. DE-STRESS I know it’s already chilly but it will help you if you try to chill out a bit more. The days are shorter but you feel like you have to ďŹ t more in. Listen to your body – do you feel more exhausted than usual? Stress is related to 99 percent of all illnesses. Use these stress-less tips to boost your mental and physical health: not saying yes to every invitation, organising yourself at work with a to do list and planning your day in advance. GO TO BED Research shows that not enough sleep puts your body in a state of stress similar to a diabetic. Your body

SUGAR Eat well. Try to avoid sugar, especially the fake sugars like aspartame. This is a hard one, considering these days the average person consumes 20 teaspoons of sugar a day! Sugar is in everything that comes in a package, from lollies to ‘healthy’ items like muesli bars. It is a huge threat to the body because it weakens the immune system. When the immune system is weak your body has to work harder and this puts it in a state of imbalance, leaving you sick. A better way to boost your health is to get your sugar source from fresh vegetables and fruits. They have great u ďŹ ghting vitamins and antioxidants. GIVE THE COUGH THE FLICK! Yes, it’s cold and dark outside when you leave work and when you get home, but exercise is crucial in maintaining a healthy immune system. Movement and exercise are vitally important in winter. Try and ďŹ t in a yoga or spin class, spend an hour at the gym or even walk home if possible. DRINKING We all love a glass of red in front of the ďŹ re or a lattĂŠ to warm us during our winter catch ups. The occasional glass of wine or coffee won’t hurt, but too much of either can suppress the immune system. Alcohol dehydrates the body, making your immune system weak and you more accessible to illness. Caffeine is also a culprit! Make sure you drink tons of water instead of, or with, coffee to help you stay hydrated. Vitality and Wellbeing Centre 8338 0844, Village Square balcony.

The 90 year old Red River Gum that forms the majestic canopy for our Burnside Village store is doing well. As a result of adaptation to its new surroundings and the intensive care program, the tree is currently in a kind of transition phase where the tree reacts, drops

dead foliage and grows new leaves. All these changes have been closely observed by expert arborists who say the tree is quite healthy, with happy bird nesting, insect and reptile activity. These are all great signs that the tree is expected to live for many years.

dine well

Fine dining comes to Burnside Village with the opening of H by Felici.

International fashion brands and the best local designs aren’t the only thing new at Burnside Village. Head around to the timber deck and you’ll find the latest dining experience to hit Burnside – H by Felici. The brainchild of Houssam and Hatem Abiad, (the people behind well-loved coffee bar Felici), H by Felici will deliver the same great coffee but with a unique new dining experience added to the menu! The man behind the reins at Felici’s café, David Biulsich, will also serve as operations manager for H. Working alongside the original Felici team is Paul Wood, as executive chef of the chic establishment. Perhaps best known for his appearance in the 2010 series of the popular television show My Kitchen Rules, Paul has been anything but idle since then. Involved in this year’s Tasting Australia and last year’s Cheesefest, Paul has now turned his hand to the restaurant business after working with Houssam on Queensland flood relief charity event SA 4 QLD. “We wanted to create a really different dining experience to what is already offered at Burnside,” Paul says.

92

“The directors decided Burnside is the ideal place to expand the Felici brand as there’s not a lot of dining places like it. It seemed the perfect fit.” The menu is designed by Paul himself and features a mouth-watering combination of contemporary dishes with a Mediterranean touch. The menu also has a strong focus on desserts, with 12 options on the menu. When asked for his recommendation, Paul says, “Nobody goes past my chocolate salted caramel tart!” H by Felici seats up to 50 people inside and 40 on the casual deck (complete with über-stylish benches and lounges), making it an ideal space for functions, which Paul hopes will be a feature of the restaurant. “The focus of H is style, service and food, and we operate on the notion that at H, the experience is everything,” Paul says. “It is a whole new dining experience not only for Burnside, but for Adelaide as a whole.” H by Felici Open 7 days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visit hbyfelici.com.au, find them on Facebook (HbyFelici).

A Clear Alternative

PLATINUM ELITE PROVIDER

Invisalign is a virtually invisible solution so you can smile during as well as after treatment. In fact, virtually no one will know you’re wearing them unless you tell them. By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth right before your eyes. Change them about every two weeks and your teeth will move - little by little - toward the smile you have always wanted.

Call 8364 4311 for a free consultation

Invisible. Removable. And Comfortable Invisalign is comfortable to wear and it doesn’t require you to change your busy lifestyle. You visit Straight Smile Centre every month or two to check your progression and get new aligners. Average treatment time is only about a year. Because aligners are removable, you can continue to eat your favourite foods while brushing and flossing normally to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
