the bulimba market report

Harcourts Bulimba/Morningside

Hello and Welcome to our quarterly update on the Bulimba Marketplace In 1849 David Mc Connel bought 173 acres of land at “Tugulawah’. He filled in swampy land and cleared the thick vine scrub that covered the area, and encouraged his employees and other settlers to do likewise. Here he grew cotton, wheat, barley and yams. Wharves were built on both sides of the river and a ferry/coachman was employed to transport goods to town. Within four years most of the peninsula was cleared, drained and under crops. Donald Coutts later bought Bulimba house and, in 1864, he auctioned much of the land off. This became the initial village at Bulimba, where the ferry is now. Hello and welcome to the Harcourts’ Bulimba Market Update. In these updates we will talk about different times and places in the

Bulimba area and show you what it used to look like in those wonderful times. The picture on the front is the Bulimba Ferry Terminal in 1927 during a slight flood of the area. Although the ferry service had been running since the 1800’s, the Bulimba terminal that still stands today, and is in this picture, was built in 1922. Today it is used as a ‘City Cat’ terminal. Bulimba, being one of the more prestigious suburbs in the inner city, has certainly been around for a long time and will continue to grow into the future.
