After our long hot summer I think we’re all ready for the fall season and the cooler weather it brings. Here in Harbor Club plans are being made for the football games, golf tournaments, autumn festivals and a host of social activities. The Fourth of July brought family and friends together to enjoy boating, swimming and the fabulous Ritz fireworks (where dazzling colors burst over the lake). Early boaters were treated to music from the concert onshore. The Sunflower Festival also fell on that weekend. Donna Jean Kendall, Kathrin Rudland and I traveled to Rutledge for the affair, returning home with armfuls of sunflowers. There was much to enjoy here in the Lake Country this summer with the OPAS Summer Series, weekends at Savannah’s and concerts on the Plaza in Eatonton. Several of our HC members were active in OPAS’s Summer Regatta. Ellie Davis and Diane Roberts manned the SS Harbor Club ~ designed and built by Don Chesnut. The girls gave it an admirable try but were unable to keep from sinking in the final battle. HC’s Sherry Lovelace partnered with an OPAS chum in Ipanic and Steve Weiser was part of the Toastmaster’s crew. Although the crews survived, all three ships met a watery end. August also ushered in a blessed event for our Angela Dell and her husband Jay as they welcomed baby daughter, Morgan ~ making Garrett and Austin proud big brothers. The LGA lead by President Val Ledyard, Tournament Chairman Marie Madsen, Secretary/Treasurer Rita Jones and Playday Chairman Kathy Kurelic planned to head up their new season with the Four-Club Challenge on Sept. 16th. Twelve of our ladies was to challenge the ladies of Cuscowilla, Reynolds Plantation and Reynolds Landing for this year’s bragging rights but the event was cancelled due to the rain. Their Member/Guest Tournament followed ~ the weekend of September 24th & 25th (please see the LGA section for the results), Several of our HC world travelers are off again this fall ~ Val and Jack Ledyard are bound to the Galapagos Islands (where Val tells me she hopes to see a blue or red-footed boobie). That should make for an interesting tale! The Galapagos must be the in place to be this year as Leigh and Bob Lofgrin are headed that way too and also planning to spend some time in Quito, Ecuador. Our poet-in-residence, Kathrin Rudland, was the winner of the prestigious Harriette Austin Award for Poetry at the Harriette Austin Writers Conference in Athens. The award also included a stipend of $500! Congratulations Kathrin! The Harbor Club Ladies League kicked off their new year with a wine tasting and guest watercolor artist in September. October will feature a talk on the Genuine Georgia Store with Cynthia Smith. The ladies will learn how to make a magnolia wreath with the help of an instructor from Gary’s Garden Center in November. Terri Ligon will host a holiday cocktail party in her lakeside home in place of the annual Christmas luncheon. The holiday rush will be on us before we know it ~ take time to kick back, relax and enjoy the days of autumn. Judy

Harbor Club Ladies Golf Association declares "Golf is for the Birdies" After the record breaking rainstorms of September 14 through the 19th, 2009, Harbor Club had been covered in over 10 inches of rain. There were serious doubts that the scheduled annual Ladies Golf Association Member/Guest Tournament could be played. But as the clouds evaporated on Tuesday, September 20th, and the course began to dry out, the Tournament Committee made to decision to go ahead as planned. Through the benevolence of the weather and the skillful maintenance of the golf course under the direction of J.R. McCroskey, the tournament was played on Friday September 25th. It was a beautiful sunny day. This year's theme was "Golf is for the Birdies". The festivities started with a practice round and cocktail party on Thursday, September 24. The party was held at the home of LGA President, Debbie Burns. The home took on the appearance of an aviary with feathers decorating the grounds and tables. A feast of heavy hors d'ouvres accompanied by Bird of Paradise cocktails was offered. As the night sky darkened, the party goers participated in a Glo-ball chipping contest. The target was set up 40 yards from the players. The Glo-Ball winners were Jeri Darfler, from Harbor Club with a ball that settled 10 inches from the target. Pamela Basset, a guest of Sherry Stathas won the Guest division with a shot that settled 12 feet from the target The tournament on Friday, September 24 was a 2 person best net ball. The field of 42 players was divided in to 5 flights. The tournament concluded with an awards reception. The players were greeted by a club house decorated on the Birdie theme. Martini glasses with birdies, golf balls and Flagsticks decorated the tables. The awards displayed were the envy of all. Much coveted were the custom artist crafted birdhouses courtesy of Jack Stauffer. Awards were distributed to Flight winners, Glo-ball winners and specialty awards for Longest Drives, Closest to the pin, and Most Net Birdies. Flight winners: First Flight: Jean Chesnut and guest Tonya Gordon Second Flight: Sherry Stathas and guest Pamela Basset Third Flight: Diane Gburek and guest Connie Karpinsky Fourth Flight: Fran Schroeder and daughter and guest Linda Schroeder Fifth Flight: Jane Kokoska and guest Angela Mauldin Longest Drive: Member: Linda Weaver Guest: Kathryn Woolery Closest to the pin: Member: Fran Schroeder Guest: Pamela Basset Most Net Birdies: Millicent Zamirowski and guest Nancy White Congratulations to all winners. A job well done to Grant Gaalema, Golf Professional, and his staff and J.R. McCroskey, Golf Course Superintendent, and his staff.

Just ahead on October 10 & 11 is the MGA Dirty Dozen and on October 24 & 25 is the popular MGA Member Member Oktoberfest tournament and dinner, the MGA's big club event. The 2009 rendition of Oktoberfest Saturday Night will feature a Beer Garden Party with Bavarian cuisine for two and dancing - all included in the lower $55 entry fee. November 7th is the MGA RED, WHITE, & BLUE tournament, and on the 21st is the Harbor Club Turkey Shoot Scramble. December 5th will be the semiannual MGA Breakfast meeting & election of new MGA officers for 2010 (a nominee for Vice President for 2010 is much needed) immediately followed by the MGA Tournament of Champions. 2009 tournaments close out with the Harbor Club Santa Claus Open on December 12th. Saturday, August 1 was the first ever MGA Beverage Day which after playday concluded with a ration of beer & wine for members on the day's roster. The second 2009 MGA Member Appreciation Day was September 5th which again included both free lunch and beverage for members on the playday roster. These successful events and the MGA Tournament Cash Prize Fund have all been part of the 2009 / 2010 budget plan for the MGA to give back more to the members, reduce MGA tournament fees, and maintain dues at $50 per year. Other similar recurring events covered by MGA dues are the two breakfast meetings, and the annual awards dinner in January. Revised start time summary for the rest of 2009: MGA Playdays shift to 9AM in October and to 10 AM in November. Tuesday, Friday & Sunday Morning Game times do the same. Thursday Morning Game remains at 10 AM....and the Friday Noon Game. Signup NO LATER THAN Noon the day before MGA playdays ! See you around the scoreboard!

Golf Tip FROM THE LESSON TEE… WHY DO YOU SLICE? You probably asked yourself that question a million times, certainly as you watch another shot fly high, right, and into trouble. One of the backswing mistakes is a REVERSE PIVOT. You move your head toward the target and shift your weight to your front foot, rather than the back foot. This move inhibits the shoulder turn, reducing the power of your swing. Rather than tilting your head toward the target, keep it in place and let your chin rotate slightly away from the target. Now your left shoulder can turn, sliding under the chin, and properly move into position behind the ball. A good shoulder turn leads to a solid weight shift onto your back side. It also promotes a wider, shallower backswing, which sets up a powerful approach into impact. DRILL: Cross Your Arms. When you take the arms out of the swing, it’s up to the shoulders to make the turn. Now you can feel a good coil. Remember to rotate your chin away from the target, opening a path for the shoulders. Taking the arms out of the equation has another benefit—you won’t be tempted to pick the club up in the backswing. Grant A. Gaalema, PGA
