Swedish American Hospital Wellness & Therapy Center A partnership with the YMCA of the Rock River Valley, the SwedishAmerican Wellness and Therapy Center offers physical therapy for rehabilitation after injury, illness and surgery within the beautiful setting of the YMCA’s new Northeast Branch. The center combines medically-based therapy with wellness and integrates it within the YMCA’s services, which are provided within a state-of-the-art fitness facility. In addition to the clinic’s own therapy equipment, patients are able to use all of the Y’s facilities during their rehabilitation, including the training room and pool. Following therapy, many patients transition to existing YMCA wellness, exercise and group fitness programs, from personalized wellness counseling to group lifestyle education (nutrition, physical activity, stress management and group support). The partnership serves as a natural link to help patients make the next step in their good health. A doctor’s referral is required for physical therapy services. Mission To help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with measureable outcomes. Community-Based Mentoring In our Community-Based Mentoring Program, volunteers are matched with a child between the ages of 6 and 12, based on similar interests. The volunteer and the child meet at a time and location convenient to both, a minimum of twice a month. Possible activities include going to the park, a movie, the YMCA, anything that interests both of you. Volunteers also call the child on the phone in between match visits, so contact is maintained on a weekly basis. For this program we ask for a commitment of one year from the time you are accepted. School-Based Mentoring Our school-based mentoring program also offers a great opportunity. In this program, volunteers are matched with a child in elementary school grades K through 5th. The volunteer meets the child once a week after school for a minimum of one hour. All meetings take place at the school, with optional meetings taking place during the summer. Volunteers help the child with homework, play games, go in the gym or outside, or just hang out and talk. For this program we ask for a commitment of one academic year, late August to early June. Make The Connection • Choose to become a community-based mentor or a site-based mentor. • In community-based mentoring a volunteer and child meet to share fun, guardian-approved activities planned by both the volunteer and child. • In site-based mentoring volunteers and little brothers or sisters meet at a designated location and are supervised in a group setting by a professional staff person. These generally occur in afterschool childcare locations or community recreation centers where professional staff are naturally present. What it takes to volunteer • 18 years or older • Auto insurance and valid driver License • Clean background check • Completion of Big Brothers Big Sisters Training • Minimum commitment of one year What it takes to enroll a child • Child should be between the ages of 6 and 12 • Resident of Winnebago County or Boone County • Commitment of a parent or guardian to support the match How To Get Involved For more information on our organization, please visit our website at www.rockfordymca.org/BBBS. To volunteer or enroll a child, please call 815 489 1133.

My experience as a Little Brother is a very memorable one... I think the biggest lesson I learned from it all was the importance of teaching others and learning to be a good teacher myself. You see my big brother taught karate and I took classes from him. At the same time, I also observed when he was teaching the classes and saw how important it was to be able to pass on knowledge that you have to others. Besides teaching me karate, he also taught me random things like how to take responsibility for things and how to work hard for things in order to reap the rewards of that. I used to clean the entire karate studio to pay for my karate lessons. Also, in hanging out with him he showed me that even when people mess up in life it does not mean they should just give up completely, but that you can come back from such things. Bad grades, getting into trouble at school, etc, doesn’t make someone a bad person, it just means they had a little work to do to get to the place they wanted to be. My big brother taught me many things, but the most important of these things was how to be a good teacher in general and how to never give up on your students, even if they mess up. This is something I took to heart when I taught karate and when I tutored high school students while in college. I also was a teacher assistant at the local high school and through both experiences learned how to show students math and science fundamentals through a different light than they had been exposed to it before. I was able to show a lot of them that even if they did not learn it the first time it did not mean they were impaired but that perhaps they just needed it brought to them in a different way. It also gave me a good chance to work with kids and provide mentorship in other aspects of their lives if they asked for that. Seeing my Big Brother as a good teacher helped me to use this knowledge of how to be a teacher in many different aspects of my life. I now am in practice and just recently had my first few patients and hope to use this teaching modality with my patients to educate them in aspects of their own body that they do not know about. My Big Brother taught me the importance of sharing your knowledge with others and I hope to use this in my medical profession, as well as in my own experience as a big brother to my little brother in the program. 32

STRONG KIDS CAMPAIGN Imagine. Believe. Achieve.

2010 Strong Kids Campaign Big Brothers Big Sisters This program provides children with a positive adult role model. Children matched in this program have reported improvements in their self-esteem and social competencies. Services are provided at no cost to the families involved. Over 100 community on-to-one matches. A goal of 50 school-based matches is set. But over 20 children are still waiting for a positive adult role model. Imagine the difference you could make… • It takes $1,000 to sustain a community one-to-one match between a caring adult and a child in need for one year. • It takes $250 to host an event for the 20 children on the waiting list. • It takes 8 hours a month of your time and a caring, dedicated attitude to be a Big Brother or a Big Sister. Black/latino Achievers This program inspires minority youth to excel by effectively linking them with mentors and advisors, and by providing programs that improve academic performance, personal development and broaden college and career options. Imagine the impact your donation could have… • It takes $300 to support one achiever student in the annual program. • It takes $500 for one minority student to attend the college tour and learn about higher education. Community Outreach Serving over 1,000 kids daily at 26 locations in 4 school districts, this program fosters the physical, educational and personal growth of all children through programs that include youth sports, academic tutoring, and personal development. Believe in a better tomorrow… • It takes $100 to provide 2 children with one week of safe, nurturing child care. • It takes $450 to sponsor a youth sports team that teaches kids positive character values and team work. Camp Winnebago This program engages over 200 kids daily in productive, fun, and educational activities over the summer months and during non-school days. Utilizing the outdoor classroom, kids learn about nature, the environment and our ecosystems while building leadership skills and positive character values. Help achieve the goal… • It takes $600 to send 2 student groups to a one-day environmental education program. • It takes $110 to have 1 child attend Camp Winnebago Summer Camp. 33

Y-Assist This year an average oF 17% of Y members received some level of financial assistance based on their ability to pay. This equates to over $150,000 a year of subsidy. In these tough times people need to the YMCA more than ever for stress relief, physical fitness, and quality family time. The YMCA brings people together in a meaningful way. You can make a difference… • It takes $336 to keep a teenager off of the streets, channeling his or her aggressive energy into productive activities. • It takes $837 for one foster-care family to have a Y membership. IMAGINE... Donationing to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign gives you the chance to put idealistic principles into action. Imagine what more can be done today that will impact the future, and you have the chance to be a part of it. To make a donation please contact Linda Parker in the Fund Development Office 815 489 1261 A Message from 2010 Strong Kids Campaign Chairman - Mike Broski IMAGINE. BELIEVE. ACHIEVE! What great words and what a great way to look toward the future. When I think of the future I think of today’s children growing up strong and healthy. I think of a strong connection among family members; parents able to spend quality time with their children and children thriving because of it. I think of a strong community that strives to work together in making Rockford a better place. The future starts today and the images of the future begin with imagination and a belief that dreams can come true. The YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign is the match that ignites that imagination. For the last several years I have had the honor to lead the annual campaign. I have witnessed imagination in the works. The creative energy the YMCA pours into the Rockford community through programs like the Community Outreach School Age Center and Black/ Latino Achievers, Leaders in Training and Environmental Education at Camp Winnebago, site-based mentoring with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Y-Assist Program available at both the Northeast Branch and the downtown Pennock Branch is truly inspiring. I believe in the YMCA, and the stories and statistics in this brochure give testimony to the impact the YMCA is making today that will result in a better future tomorrow. This year I share the leadership role with Suzi Sullivan, a passionate and dedicated volunteer. Together we will lead the 2010 Strong Kids Campaign along with Brian Peck, who has always believed in what the Y does for the kids and families we serve. If you can image and you believe in a better future, then you can help us achieve our goal!

Spiritual Growth Historically, and to this day, the YMCA is committed to putting Christian principles into practice through its many program offerings. The Y is interested in your spiritual and mental health as well as your physical well being. To that end, we offer studies, classes, times for prayer, and other opportunities for spiritual strengthening throughout the year for Y members and the community. Here are some current ways you can plug into the Y spiritually: BIBLE TALK Wednesday Nights at 5 - 6 pm in the Y-Cafe You are invited to interact with inspiring discussions on what the Bible has to say. Drop in for 10 minutes or stay for an hour. Discussion time will provide you the opportunity to investigate the Bible, to ask questions about what it is, and to understand how it affects you. Everyone is welcome to come! PRAYER BOX We have placed a wooden box just outside of the Y-Café’ where you can anonymously drop off any prayer request. There is no limit to how many requests you may have or what you may want prayer for. So we invite you to share your concerns with us so we can support you spiritually. Strict confidentiality will be adhered to. PRAYER GATHERING The prayer team will meet every Wednesday morning from 6:307:30am. We will be in the Log Lodge. We welcome others to join us in prayer. THE CHRISTIAN EMPHASIS TEAM Meets every 2nd Wednesday of each month in the ID Pennock Celebration Room at 7am. All are welcome to come join.
