The sea is one nature’s greatest treasure with millions of amazing things that is yet to be explored underneath. Above, the sea is one big body of sea water that is a par t of every explorer’s journey and need to be crossed to reach their destination. Sea is big, sea is beautiful, sea is adventurous. Indonesia is a country with rich cultures and huge diversity, making it one of the most diverse and cultural countries in the universe. Sadly, as years go by, youngsters tend to idolize other countries’ cultures and adapting them into their daily lives. Only at cer tain times like when a neighboring country claimed one of the Indonesian culture they were aware of their ‘forgotten’ culture.

This award winning print ad which took the 1st place in Communication Award 2014 print ad competition is a reminder that Indonesian cultures are not only need to be always known but also preserved in daily basis. Depicted as a pet, Indonesian culture would too, pass out if they are not treated right regularly.

‘Sungai’ Print Ad

A submission for Design Festival 2015 Print Ad competition. This print ad made it to the top 10. The idea was to tell people that clear “SUNGAI” (river in Indonesian) aren’t made of “SAMPAH” (trash in Indonesian) and giving them a message that people shouldn’t throw more trash into the river while it’s not too late by leaving one letter clean.

Bantex Eco-friendly Prnt Ad

Print Ad

People tend to keep their distance against unfriendly ones, and this insight was used in this ar twork. The brief was to create an ad that emphasize Bantex’s ring binders eco friendliness. The ad itself only uses 8 separate letters which when combined are read “Gak Ramah” (unfriendly in Indonesian), giving the idea that unfriendliness are things need to be kept away.

This unfriendly print ad came as a runner-up in Design Festival 2015 print ad competition among the other 15 finalists.

‘Imitation’ Print Ad

Print Ad

Illegal hunting against law-protected animals are still a common thing that happened in Indonesia. Humankind wouldn’t feel the impact of cer tain animal extinctions shor tly, but the ecosystem unbalance caused will definetely ruin nature’s life, which will also affect human’s life. Communication Awards 2015 appeared to be aware of this problem and used this problem as their competition brief.

To answer the problem given, a solution of creating imitations of those animal products were submitted by depicting two women, whereas one of them is the real one and the other isn’t. The message is that the real ones aren’t always more beautiful than the fake ones. But apparently, this print ad was disqualified due to being too inappropriate, therefore violating the ‘non-sexual appealing’ criteria.

Smile@Me Mini Campaign

Campaign / Social Experiment

Smiling is one simple gesture that will boost your mood, making your day better. We all know smiling out of nowhere would just simply put ourselves into a state where people will throw insanity judgement upon us. However, giving a simple smile to other people or making other people’ day better is one thing that can be done to produce a ‘smile’.

By creating a mini campaign involving a social experiment, people are expected to smile back after being greeted. As a result, 7 out of 10 strangers smiled back. Not only did we try to make their day better by greeting, but also with a witty sticker.

The documentation was expected to be a viral video that could be a sharable post in social media, although the sharing process was discontinued.

Semangkuk Sirip

Editorial Design

Sharks are the apex predator of underwater ecosystem, making sharks the stakes of underwater ecosystem’s balance. However, shark’s population is being decimated by commercial fishing, especially in Indonesia, putting some species in the danger of extinction. Shark’s fins, the main ingredient of the world’s most expensive soup; shark fin soup, are the reason why sharks are being hunted nowadays.

By designing a book dedicated to end consumers, ‘Semangkuk Sirip’ was expected to help people realize the impor tance of shark’s preservation in the sea, and help suppressing the number of shark commercial fishing.

Before this por tfolio book was created, there was once a ‘fancier’ version of Set Sail that was made as college project created back in 2015. The contents weren’t updated, way too focused on illustration, and the production cost was a bit higher than expected. So to replace the older version, this newer version (2016) was created. But still, the look of the older version is wor th mentioned here.

The brand name, AkahÄ , means Ineffable in Hindi language. The concept takes the literal meaning of ineffable words, emphasizing non-verbal communications of the brand.

Akahare

This visual system was inspired from hand gestures, a nonverbal communication which is universally used. ‘Compositing’ gesture, an activity usually done by photographers upon taking a photo is used as the main idea. The main logo uses ‘compositing’ frame with an ‘A’ monogram; the intial letter of the brand.

Branding

Each brand architecture would use a photo icon as their logo, replacing the main ‘A’ monogram. These cropped photos were taken from the owner’s personal por tfolio, giving the owner’s personal touch into the visual system, and adding posibilities to be updated later.

Popoku

11 popoku packaging redesign

Packaging Design

Popoku is a local Indonesian diaper which sells disposable diapers and pants as their main products. Popoku was once in a poor reputation compared to its competitors due to its lack of awareness and poor overall design. Encouraged by the redesign demand, the designer recommunicated the brand in a bright and cheerful way.

Popoku

The new visual system and logo were both inspired by the characteristic of Popoku’s main user itself: babies.

Packaging Design

elements for the new visual system due to its relevance with babies’ playful activities, along with mild and pastel colors to enhance the ‘babyness’ of the new visual system.

Babies are known for only having one activity in their ages, and it is playing. Underlining the word; ‘Playing’, the brand would then be intended to be a playful brand, yet keeping baby’s purity and mildness. Baby toys are then chosen as

Komodo Dive Site Maps

Illustration

The island was initially made famous by the discovery of the komodo dragons, the largest lizard species on ear th. But as the tourism demands keep growing, the Komodo National Park was forced to find another point of interests within the site and finally discovered some great spots for divers to explore. To keep up the modern tourism demand and informative aspect, World’s greatest fundraising organization, WWF (World Wildlife Fund), did some research and feel that the old dive site map

desperately needed a fresh new look to enhance these modern tourism goals the Komodo National Park team initially tried to pursue. Together with WWF Shark and Ray team, and helping hands from some of Labuan Bajo’s renowned dive operators, the designer managed to recreate selected 11 dive sites’ informative aspect in a clean and fancy way.

Exodus is a star tup clothing line providing premium dark illustrated t-shir ts as their main product. As requested by the owner, the logomark used the head of Anubis, an egypgtian god associated with the afterlife. This hence applies to the clothing line’s idealism: to provide everlasting shir ts with everlasting designs.

The Designer

hans kristian gunawan An adventurous and willing-to-learn illustrator and graphic designer. Captivated by the fun of illustration world, Hans dedicated his passion in illustration since 2013, and began creating various illustrations eversince. Not only illustrations does he dedicate his work to, but he also does branding. Personally, he enjoys creating things that can show his love of the sea and the color blue.
