FIRST AND 10 • Converting on all three opportunities in the red zone last week, Hanover improved to third best in the HCAC with a scoring percentage of 80 percent. The Panthers have recorded nine touchdowns on their 12 scores inside the opponent’s 20. The Quakers are third in red zone defense, allowing a score 68.8 percent of the time. • With just two penalties for 18 yards against Bluffton, Hanover continues to be one of the least penalized teams in the conference. The Blue and Red are in the top 20 in the HCAC and are in the top 50 in the NCAA in fewest total penalties (31), and fewest penalty yards per game (44.83). Earlham is also one of the HCAC’s least penalized teams. • The Panthers should hold an advantage in terms of the ground game this week. Hanover’s rush defense is holding its opponents to 121.5 rushing yards per game, ranking third in the conference. The Quakers enter Saturday gaining just 22.8 yards on the ground per contest, which is last in the HCAC. • Offensively, Hanover’s 119.2 rushing yards per game ranks in the top half of teams in the HCAC, while Earlham has allowed a conference high 238.2 yards per game on the ground. • The Blue and Red have also found success this season in fourth down situations. The Panthers are 15-of-21 this season, converting on over 70 percent of their chances. On the other hand, Earlham has not quite found as much success, as the Quakers are just 3-for-18 on fourth down this year. • The Panther punt coverage unit continues to be a highlight this season as they are allowing just 2.14 yards per punt return. The team leads the conference and is in the top 20 in the nation in the statistical category. • Senior Ryan Martin (Greensburg, Ind.) ranks second in the HCAC in total tackles per game at 9.3. The 2015 NCAA Division III total tackles leader has been doing most of his damage on his own, ranking in the top five in the HCAC and top 50 in the nation in solo tackles at 5.8 per game. • Classmate Layne Taylor (Sellersburg, Ind.) reeled in five catches for 41 yards last week, as his 6.2 receptions per game is fifth in the HCAC. Taylor leads the team with 211 receiving yards this season. • On the ground, junior Justin Conners (Harrison, Ohio) is averaging 64.8 yards per contest, which is third best in the conference. Conners’ five rushing scores also ranks third in the HCAC, as the sophomore is totaling a team high 89.2 all-purpose yards per game. • Knocking in one field goal and one point-after try, senior kicker Adam Goepfrich (Jasper, Ind.) moved into a tie for second in the HCAC with three field goals made this season. Over the past two games, Goepfrich has accounted for 10 of HC’s 24 points.

THE COACHES Matt Theobald (Hanover ‘96) is entering his first season as head coach at his alma mater. From 2003-2015, Theobald served as the assistant head coach, and offenseive and defensive coordinator at HCAC rival, Franklin, where the Grizzlies won eight HCAC championships, including each of the past six conference titles. While at Franklin, Theobald guided one of the nation’s topranked offenses from 2013-2015, and was the head of the Grizzlies’ defensive unit prior to that. He has helped produce three HCAC defensive most valuable player and three HCAC offensive most valuable player awards. After graduating from Hanover, Theobald served on HC’s coaching staff as a receivers coach, defensive backs coach, and special teams coordinator from 1996-2000. Nick Johnson (Earlham ‘01) enters his second year as head football coach at Earlham College in 2016. Johnson earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Coach of the Year honors in his first season leading the Quakers. Under his guidance, Jalen Kenner earned Special Teams Most Valuable Player as well as setting numerous program records including career receptions, reception yards, consecutive games with a reception, and all-purpose yards. Johnson was an assistant coach for the Quakers in football from 2003-12, serving the last five years as the defensive coordinator. He also served as Earlham’s head track coach for 12 years prior to moving back to the football program.

After garnering national superlatives in 2015, senior linebacker Ryan Martin enters the 2016 campaign a consensus preseason all-American and finds himself on the HERO Sports National Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. The linebacker was named to four preseason all-American lists heading into 2016, including College Football America’s, Hero Sports’, Football Gameplans’, and USA College Football Today’s prestigious lists. Martin has earned first team accolades for each award. In 2015, Martin was a menace on defense, as he led the NCAA Division III in total tackles with 143, as his 104 solo tackles also led the country. Martin’s performance was good enough to be the 2015 HERO Sports National Defensive Player of the Year. The senior was also a first team all-HCAC choice last season. With 3.5 sacks and 11 total tackles for loss, Martin led the team in both categories a season ago, while also ranking in the top 10 in the conference. In 30 career games played, the senior has 209 total tackles, averaging over seven tackles per game. Martin has also forced three fumbles and recovered his lone career fumble in 2015.

RYAN MARTIN - HC CAREER NUMBERS Total Tackles - 209 Solo Tackles - 153 Forced Fumbles/Recoveries - 3/1 Sacks - 5.0 Tackles for Loss - 13

RICKY’S RECEPTIONS Ricky Windell reeled in over 35 pass receptions in each of the past two seasons, grabbing 36 in 2015. The senior wide out has totaled close to 2,000 receiving yards in his career, including a team high 561 yards a year ago. The 2015 campaign also saw Windell grab four touchdown receptions, which led HC and ranked in the top 15 in the HCAC. Windell was one of the most explosive players for the Panthers a season ago, tying for the team high in plays over 20 yards with 14. Part of Windell’s explosive plays included two 65-yard touchdown receptions. The senior garnered second team all-HCAC honors in 2015, and was named to the 2016 preseason Honorable Mention allAmerican list for USA College Football Today.

Kegan Aldridge returns to help lead the defensive backs in 2016, as the junior was an honorable mention all-HCAC selection a year ago. Aldridge has also been named to USA College Football Today’s preseason honorable mention allAmerican list for this season. In 2015, the defensive back picked off four passes to lead the Panthers in interceptions. Aldridge also took one of his intercepts back for a touchdown last year for his lone career score. Not only did Aldridge stop the ball through the air, but he also covered the ground, recording five tackles per game and recovering two fumbles in 2015. In 26 career games played, the junior has intercepted five passes, deflected 19 passes, and made 133 total tackles.

GUTERMUTH SILENCES DEFENSES

The senior quarterback has proven to be able to drive the Panthers down the field and produce points this season. Gutermuth ranks among the top 10 in the HCAC in passing yards per game, 137.0, and total offense, 155.5. The senior passed for a season-high 199 yard in the win over Anderson and has shown off his running ability, rushing for over 50 yards on two seperate occasions, including for 73 yards against Bluffton.
