“Honoring Our Ancestors”

VILLAGE OF ILASCO

(CEMENT COMPANY TOWN) 573-248-1216 • Four miles south of Hannibal on Scenic Hwy 79

Memorial monuments have been erected to honor the former Village of Ilasco, a cement company town named by a chemist. In 1903 when the recently completed Atlas Portland Cement Co. needed additional workers, recruiters were sent to Eastern and Southern Europe to secure the labor force for the cement plant and largest employer in the Hannibal area. The village grew to 3,000 residents, many speaking different languages and with different cultures and customs. The original cement plant and its workers provided the cement for the Panama Canal, locks and dams on the Mississippi River and to the overall growth of our nation. When the company town was dissolved in 1962, the schools were torn down in 1964 and Hwy 79 was built through the center of town. It was the end of an era. We invite you to visit the monuments and learn more about the village and the name ILASCO.
