NEW YORK AT ITS CORE

Museum of the City of New York, November 2016, project manager The Museum of the City of New York embarked on a new adventure with the permanent exhibition New York At Its Core, a three gallery, 8,000 square foot exhibition on the history of New York City. Since its opening in November 2016, the exhibit has won an AIANY Design Award and Architizer Award. The gallery’s culminating exhibit, the Future City Lab, allows visitors to create their own futuristic city. They can add vegetation, transportation, alternative energy, and even populate their designs with real New Yorkers. After finishing, visitors can step inside their own creations using motion sensor technology, and play-act alongside virtual neighbors. As the project manager and designer of the Future City Lab, the gallery dedicated to the future of New York City, I was tasked with designing a space that engages the visitor with both analog and digital components and creating an aesthetic that responds to the audio/visual components developed by UX designers Local Projects.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

New York, NY, June 2016, designer This private resident in Midtown Manhattan was originally three separate apartments that were combined over the years. When Studio Joseph was first presented with the project, ceiling heights did not correspond, unused HVAC systems were left in the ceilings, and there was a lack of unifying character in the apartment. Our strategy was to open the apartment by moving the kitchen to connect the dining and living areas, create a hallway to connect the private spaces in the back, and remove any unnecessary barriers in lines of sight. A bathroom core anchored the otherwise white apartment with black wood that matched the floors. As a designer on this project, I assisted in the schematic designs and construction drawings, and I detailed all kitchen elements. I conducted product research for product appliances and presented the options to the client. The client is currently living in and enjoying their new home.


JACOB RIIS: REVEALING NEW YORK’S OTHER HALF Museum of the City of New York, October 2015, project manager

The Museum of the City of New mounted the first major retrospective of Riis’s photographic work in the United States since World War II. The challenge presented to Studio Joseph was to create an immersive environment in which visitors could understand the context and impact of Riis’ work. As project manager, I was lead designer and construction administrator. Close collaboration with museum staff, the curator, and contractor led to a fully immersed experience in this project. The design team’s strategy was to incorporate the photos and other artifacts into casework designed with a flexible area for labeling that did not distract from the overall interpretation of the objects. By creating vitrines instead of framing the photos, we presented them for what they really are, not works of art, but careful documents of the human condition. The poignancy of these small images comes through as they are held forward individually on mounts instead of being rarified in framing. In addition, the sepia tones of the photos made them feel very distant to today’s visitor. We used black backgrounds and a rich dark wood color that worked together to give the photos more contrast and less yellow. Visitors react in favor of the design aesthetic and its simple wood frames as a clear metaphoric connection to the spaces where Riis often photographed. The project won an SEGD Merit Award in 2016.


STOCKHOLM RESIDENCES

Brooklyn, NY, in progress, STAT Architecture, project architect A non-profit client commissioned STAT Architecture to create a 20-unit low income housing building in Brooklyn, NY. The project maximizes space in the apartmnets while conforming to BLDS and HPD standards. STAT Architecture knew the building would stand out on the street, as at four stories, it is taller than the surrounding bulidings. The strategy was to create a simple and pleasing building that worked with, not against its surroundings. As project architect, I spearheaded coordination for all BLDS and HPD submissions, coordinated the client and tenant needs, and created drawings based on the owner’s intent.

PUZZLING

Thesis, Summer 2014, advisor: Eric Owen Moss This thesis was the recipient of the SCI-Arc Gehry Prize. The title of my thesis is puzzling. Puzzling as in making a puzzle, puzzling as in solving a puzzle, puzzling as in the act of thinking, and puzzling as in enigmatic. Through a process of obfuscation, I have created an organizational mechanism that organizes space unpredictably but not illegibly. My process started with a w-flange, or a drawing of a w-flange. Ignoring most of the use and construction aspects of the beam, I set out to develop a method of making an organizational structure. This is a project for a criminal courthouse in downtown Baltimore. The courthouse requires four distinct circulation patterns: the jury, the judge, the criminal, and the public. I chose to work with the criminal courthouse so I would be obligated to work with these constraints, explicating the organizational pattern developed in my formal process. The system is further confused in the drawings, which adds axonometric drawings of the programmatic pieces in plan and building pieces in section to the conventional two dimensional drawings. The systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s value lies in its complexity, in complete antithesis to the organizational systems which used rectilinear forms to organize space. A system that is more obscure suggests a possibility of spaces, rather than dictate exact spaces. I have worked to make the system clear for the courthouse, while retaining the obscurity and in flux qualities of the original system.


WARPED NODE

Fall 2013, instructor: Nanako Umemoto This project was done in total collaboration with partner Kevin Chen. Our project for a small airport in Ibaraki, Japan is about a warped node in a larger infrastructural system. The building and surrounding landscape are created from an expansive field of structural pins. The landscape is filled in with artificial soil. The pin field is then warped to move up and around the building, remaining a single surface. The pins are held together in the building with a diagrid, which structurally strengthens the building. Under the local landscape, volumes are carved from the pin field to allow for car and airplane traffic and garages. The building comprises of multiple layers, diminishing the idea of the building as a unique form, and more as a conglomeration of parts. The parts are from a continuous vector field, there is no definition in them. Through our excess layers and use of fields, we have created a building that cannot be read as a building, but one that is part of the larger airport system and local landscape.

CINEMA FRAME

Spring 2014, instructor: Joe Day This project explores how films are framed in cinema environments. Through a detailed analysis of scenes from Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly’s Singin’ in the Rain, Andy Warhol’s Vinyl , and Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, I ascertained that the camera’s movements through otherwise similar scenes change the tone and the viewer’s connection to the scene. The project for a screening building for the Columbia College Hollywood in Los Angeles, California, features three types of screens: the traditional cinema area with raked seating; large screens with no seating, meant to be watched at the whim of the viewer; and the skewed screens that conform to the building’s curves, warping the way we see film.
