About Our Cover

Born and raised in Chicago, Rod Schwartz backed into a lifelong career in radio advertising in 1973 in Springfield, Illinois. He became sales manager for the Pullman Radio Group in 1979 and continues to serve clients in the region as the stations’ senior account executive. Since 1991, Rod and his family have operated Grace Broadcast Sales, a provider of short-form syndicated radio features to radio and TV stations across the U.S. and Canada.

Rod caught the shutter bug in 1977, when he bought his first 35mm SLR, a Minolta XE-7, to chronicle the everyday wonders and milestones of family life, and he has been shooting regularly ever since. He particularly enjoys photographing landscapes, nature, and interesting architecture, as well as portraits and candid subjects. Living in the Palouse has afforded him endless opportunities to explore and capture its unique beauty in photographs. Rod’s images have appeared in various magazines, calendars, tourism publications, and websites. In August, 2016 he knocked an item off his photographic bucket list, when he rode shotgun on Ben Barstow’s combine during the wheat harvest. (An image of Ben clearing weeds from the header was awarded top cash prize in the McGregor Company’s contest at the Palouse Empire Fair the following month.) He rarely travels without a camera at hand, knowing that a fleeting opportunity may present itself at any time. The cover photo, Sunnyside Park Reflections, is one of Rod’s favorites, taken while on a late afternoon walk with his wife Paula a few summers ago. Rod is pleased to share some of his images online at and at
