Humble & Nobility The legend of Lady Godiva and the essence of Godiva Chocolates can be represented by the notions of Nobility and Elegance. The store design will reflect Godiva’s rich and desirable product and highlight Lady Godiva’s “Spirit” that lies behind the brand name.

Lotus petals & water ripple Lotus in water is inspiration for the concept. The lotus has symbolized spirituality, divinity, compassion, and purity, which share core values with Lady Godiva. The patterns of the lotus petals will translate into the store lay-out design while the aspects of water ripple will express on the wall and ceiling design.

The Starland Dairy Building is a historic landmark in the Savannah historic district. The Briggs & Riley Travelware corporation will be restoring the Starland Dairy building as a satellite office. The Briggs& Riley Travelware corporation is a leader in the luggage industry. The company provides stylish yet durable bags to fit all of clients’ travel needs.

Site Analysis The Starland Dairy was once a huge part of the Starland District but the dairy industry went out of business in the early 1980s. The property was abandoned and the district fell into disrepair as well until the Urban Renewal Revitalization project started in 1998. The Starland District became a hub for local art and music. It also provides unique shops, boutiques, and a varied selection of restaurants and cafĂŠs.

Project Goal The primary goal of this project is to maintain the building’s historic character in tune with corporate goals and images of the Briggs & Riley corporation. The corporate motto, “Simple as That” is a powerful vision that was carefully considered for the project. The concept is compartmentalized of the Briggs and Riley’s modern innovative luggage design while revealing historic contexts of the old Southern charm.

Inspiration With respect to the design of the interior space, it remains simple and modern design along with asymmetric grid-like patterns inspired by Mondrian’s De stijl. Keeping in mind the company’s brand value, clean, simple and sustainable materials will be chosen for the design.

Sustainable Design Strategy

Polycarbonate Roof top

The original building has wide open outdoor space with bare posts and beams. A program is required to enclose the open space in order to be usable office space. The office will retain many features of the original structure such as the exposed post and beam system, partially brick columns, and walls.

Ground Roof

The curtain wall system between employee cafe and the outdoor lounge on the second floor will transition from the indoor to outdoor design aesthetically. This will allow natural light to penetrate deep into the space. The lounge has a wooden louver canopy which allows controllable daylight and heat to be regulated. Additionally, many of the windows are operable that can support natural ventilation and other sustainable design strategies.

Suspended Meeting Room Second Floor

Another sustainable design feature is the polycarbonate roofing system that sits on the top of the suspended meeting room. The room is in the form of a transparent cube which will bring in natural light.

First Floor

This diagram illustrates polycarbonate roofing system and how central staircase connects all three floors

Briggs & Riley’s philosophy, slogan,“Simple as That” will be carved into the Corian solid surface. The Corian panel uses the chevron technique, where every four inches, the wall folds in 90 degree. When people stand away to one side of the wall, they would see the word “Simple,” while the other side suggests the whole phrase, “Simple as That.”

Corian is extremely durable and contains a minimum of 25% postconsumer per-consumer recycled material. It also has low VOC emission.

Sustainable Workstation

The production team office features large windows that maximize the availability of natural light and create a pleasant environment. Solar Screen Shades on the windows control glare and assist in balancing the heat gain and heat loss to optimize employees’ comfort and energy efficiency. This open-plan workstation is designed to support the production team in a collaborative environment. This bench application allows users to communicate freely with each other while screens and storage provides visual boundaries and defines personal space. An area rug and cabinet creates another boundary for a casual meeting space. Plants on the DIRTT wall system will improve air quality and promote employee wellbeing. Shelves and cabinet between columns serve as partitions for the workstations.
