MEET THE NEW MANAGING DIRECTOR,
NICHOLE GANTSHAR There's no more lovely place to spend a summer than Upstate New York. When the Hangar Board of Directors invited me to join the Hangar Theatre and work with Artistic Director Michael Barakiva, I imagined a blissful summer. Picturing myself meeting subscribers in the tent, reuniting with theatre friends, and making myself part of the Ithaca community, seemed just a frosty spring away. Former Hangar Artistic Director Bob Moss is one of my mentors, and working with him at Syracuse Stage, I listened to dozens of his stories about the Hangar and relished the opportunity to work, as his dramaturg, in 2008 on The Hangar production of T.J. Rogers' The Overwhelming. So I knew how lovely a Hangar summer night could be.
6
Instead, I'm finding inspiration in seeing how the Hangar has come together to stay connected to its community with our all virtual season. I'm finding solace in how the staff remains united working from home. I hope each of you find the same inspiration experiencing our virtual offerings this summer. I hope each show reminds you of why you love theatre and enjoy being part of the Hangar community. I look forward to meeting all you soon and can't wait for the day we can all again gather together, sit in the dark, and watch magic on stage. Nichole Gantshar Incoming Managing Director

LETTER FROM THE HANGAR BOARD LEADERSHIP
Early in March, when it became clear that COVID-19 would impact our lives, the leadership of the Hangar Theatre began discussions on how to proceed. How do we create theatre when we can’t be physically present together? After weeks of changing scenarios and intense conversations, the Hangar has risen to the challenge of continuing its mission. Through innumerable Zoom meetings and phone calls, the Hangar staff and board have worked tirelessly to find a way to present artistic and educational programming that would both serve our community and maintain our standard of excellence. Even before the pandemic, we knew changes were coming. Our beloved former Managing Director MaryBeth Bunge retired this spring. Our incoming Managing Director Nichole Gantshar brings with her wonderful experience in arts management. Although Nichole doesn’t formally start until this summer, she’s already been invaluable in helping us chart a new course. Our intrepid Artistic Director Michael Barakiva has not only planned an almost entirely new summer season, but also figured out new ways to present it. Almost everything about how we present theatre has changed: the

audition process, rehearsals, costumes, props, and sets (or the lack thereof), sound, video, and even contracting— all have changed, and Michael has navigated it all tirelessly and with love.
these virtual experiences. If you are a subscriber, we remain ever grateful for your belief and support. Or you may be a first-time patron, curious to sample the Hangar from the comfort of your couch –welcome! Our performances are also being made possible by our terrific sponsors, who have stepped up and stayed with us in a wonderful display of community spirit. We are deeply grateful to all of them, and all of you.
Our Education Director Shirley Serotsky has revamped our education programs to meet the needs of the children in our community. Once COVID-19 was upon us, she turned these programs on a dime and moved everything online. Available for all ages, these online classes have been well received. Like millions of other Americans, our amazing, dedicated staff have transitioned to working from home. They continue to do the work of a much larger staff with enthusiasm, grace, and good humor. We want to recognize our talented, diverse, and energetic Board of Trustees, a group of extraordinary individuals whom we are honored to lead. In the past year we welcomed several new board members who bring new skills to our work. Our emeritus board members continue to be engaged and generous with their time and wisdom. And finally, we want to thank you, our theatregoers, who are joining us for
This year marks the Hangar’s 46th summer season and we are so proud to have found a way to share art with the world. The beautiful summer season that Michael had originally planned will need to wait a little longer, but we will find a different beauty for now. In this strange, sad, socially distant time, art reminds us to imagine things beyond the present. Creating and sharing theatre and music and art have been basic human needs for thousands of years. Right now, it’s safest to share them from our separate spaces, but someday soon we’ll be together again in our Hangar Theatre. Stay safe. Subscriber selection sweepstakes Summer 2020 is our Production Manager Adam Zonder's 25th season with the Hangar. In his honor, we asked him to choose his top 64 shows that he has worked on.
We then asked our 2020 subscribers which of those shows are their favorites, and did a tournament during the month of April. The winning show was... Rent!

The Hangar Theatre remembers Camilla Sabine Schade (May 2, 1952May 24, 2019) and her incredible legacy in the Ithaca community. In 2004, Camilla moved to New York State and began a new life in Cayutaville. She soon began working with the Hangar Theatre’s Project 4 in nearby Ithaca which puts artists in 4th grade classrooms to create plays with students and teachers. Camilla’s enthusiasm was infectious and she delighted in introducing stagecraft to her young charges, especially the shy ones. Other theater teaching work included Ithaca Youth Bureau, Hangar Theatre summer programs, after school workshops, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and 171 Cedar Arts in Corning NY. Her favorite teaching work was writing and performing plays with adults with disabilities for Pathways, Inc. in Corning. Camilla worked with the Ithaca theater community onstage at the Hangar Theatre, Kitchen Theatre, Cinemapolis, Cherry Arts and Homecoming Players. She performed in many short plays, staged readings, radio voiceovers, and public events. She did narration for Music’s Recreation and the Grass Roots Orchestra. She charmed audiences with her character Mabel McClafferty at the Cancer Resource Center’s annual fundraiser, “One Funny Ithaca.” She even played Einstein at Cornell University. Camilla’s warmth and sincere interest in others’ lives made human interactions possible that were not ordinary. She would routinely light up a room with her smile and energy. One felt that they were a better person when Camilla was nearby.
On August 26, 2019, the Hangar Theatre celebrated the life and work of Camilla in an open mic, designed for the community to speak, sing, read, or share stories of Camilla, and perform excerpts from her expansive repertoire.
