Our specialist Solicitors can help Welcome to our February edition. Like a number of local villages, the place where I live voted to not have street lights. This means that, even though we need a torch when stumbling back from the pub, we sometimes get a great view of the stars on clear nights. But for the very best view, nothing matches the dark skies of the North York Moors where you might see as many as 2,000 stars. The Dark Skies Festival runs from 14th February to 1st March and has lots of events for all ages. Everyone is welcome at the award-winning Hovingham Village Market which celebrates its 125th market on 1st February. The market promotes local produce, reusable packaging and a low environmental impact – well worth a visit. Melvyn Bragg is headlining this years York Literature Festival which runs from 19th March. Get in early to book your tickets for this year’s exciting programme. February can be the hardest of months but remember to keep your Handy Mag ‘handy’ for all the local events, businesses and services you need! Until next time

TOP 10 REASONS

TO USE PEARSONS & WARD TO MAKE YOUR LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY BY EMMA ELWESS, PEARSONS & WARD SOLICITORS

A

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) lets you decide who you would like to make decisions for you if you lose mental capacity. While you may be tempted to try and do it yourself, the process is complicated and if not followed correctly your LPA may not be valid when you need to use it. Emma Elwess, Head of Private Clients at Pearsons & Ward in Malton, gives you her top ten reasons why you should always use us to make an LPA. An LPA must be: • • • •

made by someone aged 18 or over who has mental capacity; prepared using prescribed forms which request specific information and include a number of safeguards to prevent abuse; accompanied by the required fee; and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG).

The procedure for making an LPA may seem straightforward but is littered with traps for the unwary. Making a mistake can be costly and result in your application being rejected. We can help you avoid problems by: 1.

2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

6

Advising who you should appoint to be your attorneys, checking they are willing and able to act and that they understand their responsibilities. Explaining the different ways more than one attorney can be authorised to make decisions. Helping you nominate replacement attorneys in case your original attorneys are unable to act. Ensuring your wishes are expressed clearly so they can be carried out. Including appropriate wording to ensure your cash and investments can be managed on your behalf. Advising whether a separate LPA is necessary to protect your business interests. Considering whether there is anything about your personal circumstances which means that your LPA may be restricted such as where you have property or assets abroad.

8.

Advising how an LPA may be used where assets covered by the LPA are owned jointly. 9. Reviewing the things you need to do to prevent your application for registration being rejected by the OPG. 10. Preventing the validity of your LPA being challenged by arranging for a suitable certificate provider if capacity is in doubt. We will act in your best interests and help you to understand the aim and effect of the LPA you are making. For a confidential discussion about LPA’s contact Emma Elwess on 01653 692247 or email emma.elwess@pearslaw.co.uk.

TIME TO CLEAR THINGS UP…

WHAT DOES FINANCIAL PLANNING ACTUALLY MEAN? BY JULIE WILSON, CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AT PENLIFE ASSOCIATES

F

inding the best life assurance plan? Creating complex tax planning solutions? Passing wealth on to future generations? Avoiding unforeseen catastrophes?

to get more comprehensive advice from an independent financial planner or a financial planner of chartered status, as they have to comply with very high standards of ethics and client care.

It all sounds a bit overwhelming to say the least. There are a lot of misconceptions around what Financial Advisers actually do, and we don’t want you missing out on saving a load of money just because you don’t know.

You think all financial advisers can advise on all areas of finance? While a financial adviser will have a general understanding of most financial areas, financial planning is a complex subject. Look for specialists in the area that you are seeking advice in.

You think you can do your own financial planning? Okay, there are a few things that you should try doing yourself, like making a pizza or putting up a shelf. But doing your own financial planning? Maybe not. You’re likely to get lower returns, suffer higher taxes and miss out on opportunities. Financial planners are qualified to make sure you get the most from your money. You think all financial planners are the same? Financial advisers can be independent or tied to a company. Consumer champion “Which?” has conducted research which showed that you’re likely

You think the cheapest financial adviser is the best value? People don’t buy things because they are the cheapest. Otherwise no-one would have Rolls Royces. You think all financial planners are qualified to the same level? From 2013, all financial advisers must be qualified to the “diploma level”. Many of our financial planners have gone beyond this minimum requirement, with 4 of our advisers being “Chartered”the gold standard in financial planning.

If you’re still questioning whether you need a financial planner, we’ve got some reasons why. • You don’t have the knowledge or time to look after your own affairs but you still want to make the most of your money. • You have a substantial sum to invest. • You want to give money to someone without giving too much to the tax man. • You are planning retirement. • You want to transfer a pension from one scheme to another. • You want to transfer your final salary to a personal pension arrangement. • You want your money to last as long as you do. • You want to draw money from your pension tax efficiently. • You’re concerned about inheritance tax. • You want to get and maintain the lifestyle you choose – no matter what happens. Do you fit this criteria? It might be worth having a chat with one of our straight-talking financial planners. If you want to learn more about why you need a financial adviser, simply request our guide by filling in the form below.

he Hovingham Village Market celebrated its 10th birthday in 2019 with over 120 Markets since October 2009. There have been over 10,000 visitors to the market in the last year and with at least 60 stalls each time, there is definitely plenty to see. The Market boasts a unique combination of indoor and outdoor stalls offering local produce, crafts and promoting local community groups. A Community Café, run by a local community group for each market, provides valuable sustenance to visitors, stallholders and volunteers; serving wonderful bacon butties, homemade cakes, drinks and special items unique to each Hovingham Village Market. These cafes have raised over £130,000 with 100% of funds raised going to these local good causes. The initial objective of the Market has been achieved – to provide a safe monthly community forum for both communities local to Hovingham as well as visitors from all Yorkshire Ridings and further afield.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS IN 2020

LOCAL SERVICE, CHOICE & VALUE

A

fter 30 years in business, the people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. Instyle’s directors Gary and Paul say that more than 80 per cent of customers come through referrals from their customers’ family, friends and neighbours. James and Heather, from Wiggington, wrote: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 30 years of trading, Instyle

26

Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a close-knit team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in the area. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from a new creative design to the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.

Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price. And if money is tight, an Instyle kitchen or bedroom facelift can freshen up a tired looking room for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen often for half the price of new. “We don’t use any pressure sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

LOCAL SUPPORT

FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

FROM RYEDALE YMCA

R

yedale YMCA is an independent charity established in 1996 offering quality single-person accommodation to young people in need of support. They house young people from all over Ryedale for anywhere up to two years, and focus on providing a safe, secure and supportive environment. Every person who comes through their doors has access to staff who can help with a range of needs. And by working closely with partner agencies, Ryedale YMCA are able to provide further specialist support wherever needed. They aim to help young people build the necessary skills to move from dependence to being independent and capable of sustaining their own tenancy. Everyone is treated as an individual, with support plans tailored to each and every person, focusing on and identifying what they would like to work on. This can be anything from looking after their rooms and cooking, to budgeting, managing utilities, seeking employment, exploring further education opportunities, health and fitness, and any other everyday life skills many of us take for granted. Ryedale YMCA are a small team who work closely together to make sure young people receive a

professional, consistent and committed approach from all the staff no matter what their roles are. Chief Officer, Karlie McGinty, says “I have great pride in Ryedale YMCA and have worked here for 15 years. The housing manager, Kevin Cooke, has worked here 18 years. Between us we manage four other incredibly brilliant part time staff who truly believe in each young person who lives here.” What’s more, through all their hard work and dedication, Ryedale YMCA were recently awarded ‘Charity of the Year’ at the Pride of Malton and Norton Awards. But like most charities, they work to a tight budget and are constantly seeking donations as well as looking at potential funding streams. They strive to keep the accommodation fresh and modern, and currently need funds to improve the bathrooms for the bedsits. They are also looking to replace and upgrade the communal kitchen area with the aim of doing more with food preparation to assist with budgeting and healthy eating initiatives. To know more about the work Ryedale YMCA do, or to help, get in touch by telephone on 01653 691400 or email admin@ryedaleymca.org.uk

RYEDALE FESTIVAL BACH TO THE LAUNCH CONCERT BALKANS

CONCERT AND CAKE

Johan Dalene violin Nicola Eimer piano

Teyber String Trio

The dazzlingly talented 18-year-old Swedish violinist plays Beethoven’s exciting and epic Kreutzer sonata and Franck’s famous violin masterpiece in a virtuoso programme. The full programme for the Ryedale Festival 2020 will also be announced as part of this concert.

Ema Nikolovska mezzo-soprano Christopher Glynn piano Samuele Telari accordion Presented in association with the Kathleen Ferrier Awards, a singer of rare imagination and expressive range performs a typically adventurous programme, accompanied by piano and accordion in music ranging from one of Bach’s most sublime arias to bitingly satirical songs by Shostakovich and evocative folk music from Spain and the Balkans.

A sparkling afternoon of string trios, setting Viennese masterpieces by Schubert and Beethoven alongside the passion and colour of a littleknown work by Ernő Dohnányi which weaves high art with the folk songs and dances of his native Hungary.

“His name’s Walter Cornwell,” Mae said. “He was my woodwork teacher’s son, had lovely eyes. He got in touch on Facebook.” Mae reached for her phone. “Sent me his picture.” “Go on,” Colleen leaned forward, “let me see it.” “I ought to warn you – he’s changed a lot.” Mae showed Colleen the screen of her phone.

THE ONE WHO GOT AWAY BY JACKIE BREWSTER “Shall I sit with you Aunty Mae, or at another table?” Colleen dithered, looking around the café for the perfect spot. “Is he supposed to know I’m here or not?” “I don’t want it to look like I’ve brought a chaperone – I am a grown woman after all,” Mae said, pulling out a chair at a table by the window. “Perhaps I should sit over in the corner.” Colleen pointed to a table tucked behind a yucca. “If he looks like a weirdo I’ll initiate an exit strategy.” “You are good to come with me for this,” Mae said, reaching for her niece’s hand. “I must admit I’m feeling all of a flutter.” “You’d do the same for me,” Colleen said. “So who is this mystery date anyway?” “It’s funny actually. He’s a chap I used to go to school with. I thought he was wonderful, but he preferred another girl, so that was that.” “He’s your one who got away.” Colleen nodded in sympathy. “I had one of those.” “Really?” Mae checked her makeup in a compact mirror. “What was his name?” “Mark Harby.” Colleen blushed. “We were thick as thieves when we were kids. Then he moved down south with his parents and I was too shy to ask if he’d write.” Colleen straightened up and smiled. “So what’s your fella like?” 38

“He looks handsome,” Colleen lied. Time had not been kind to Walter Cornwall. “What does he say about himself?” “He’s retired, has a son and two grandkids, likes renovating pine furniture and collecting antique rasps.” “Retired already?” Colleen was surprised, and then a little suspicious. “They’re very woodworky hobbies, aren’t they?” “He must take after his dad,” Mae conceded. “What was the name of his dad?” Colleen asked carefully. “You know, the woodwork teacher?” “We never asked things like that.” Mae waved her hand dismissively. “It was just ‘Sir’.” “You don’t suppose it was Walter as well do you?” “Now I think about it, it could have been.” Mae frowned. Colleen grimaced. “Aunty Mae, I’ve got a horrible feeling that your date isn’t with Walter Junior – but with Walter Senior, your woodwork teacher.” Her aunt’s reaction surprised her. “It isn’t,” Mae winked, “because I haven’t got a date at all.” “You haven’t?” Colleen was confused. “I was just keeping you distracted,” Mae turned towards the café door, “until your date arrived.” “But I’m not here for a date,” Colleen stammered, her heart already thumping as a person she hadn’t seen for years walked towards their table. “I’ve been playing Cupid, don’t be cross,” Mae whispered, and made the unnecessary introduction. “Colleen, you remember Mark Harby don’t you?”

AT THE CLINIC, MALTON ew Year always has a positive impact on people investing time and effort in their health and wellbeing. If 2019 was more chair-shaped rather than star-jump-shaped then injuries may start to creep in due to the sudden change in activity levels. At The Clinic in Malton we pride ourselves on providing people with the most appropriate treatment for any foot, ankle or lower limb problems. As part of our podiatry and physiotherapy treatments we often prescribe orthotic insoles to fit in either day-to-day shoes or sport-specific shoes. Orthotics are often used to treat a multitude of problems such as ankle pain, foot/ankle arthritis, plantar fasciitis, knee pain and many more foot and ankle or lower limb problems. Our most recent introduction of Phits 3D printed orthotics has meant we can prescribe an orthotic insole that is built based on the information from an RS scan. This scan can measure a standing centre of pressure and also key components of walking such as loading areas of the foot and the timing of the key components of the walking cycle. At an appointment we would combine the information gained from the physical examination along with the the RS scan to tailor any orthotic we provide. Not every patient we see requires orthotic insoles as other factors need to be considered such as footwear and exercises to address any issues that may be impacting upon injury or rehabilitation. There are many types of orthotics available and we combine the experience of our Musculoskeletal Podiatrist/Physiotherapists with the latest technology to ensure you get the most appropriate orthotic insole to suit your needs. Call The Clinic on 01653 228026 or visit www.theclinicmalton.co.uk for more details. ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

THINKING OF GETTING A NEW PUPPY OR KITTEN? OUR VET, WILL SENNITT, TALKS ABOUT TAKING ON HIS FLUFFY BUNDLE OF COCKER SPANIEL JOY, BERTIE. “It was a wet and windy September evening in 2014 when I and my now wife travelled across the North York moors to collect our first puppy, Bertie. My wife had always wanted a Cocker Spaniel having researched the character of the breed and how he might fit in to our lifestyle. My preference had always been for a Labrador but as in all good relationships – we compromised, and she won! We’d scoped out several Cocker Spaniel breeders in the area – taking the time to visit each one to check where the puppies and their mother were being raised, making sure they had all the correct treatments and veterinary checks before decided on a puppy to love for Bertie in ‘his’ wash basket. life. I remember the first time we saw Bertie a few weeks prior there were several smaller females in his litter who came happily trotting up to us with tails wagging, giving little whimpers to get our attention. Then from the back of the room came a chunky blob of furry energy! Bertie won our hearts immediately – clambering over his sisters in the process but they didn’t seem to mind. We made sure we asked the breeder the right questions – such as whether he’d be starting vaccinations for us and be vet-checked? Would he be microchipped and wormed before collection? Which diet is he being fed? And many others to make sure we were taking on a healthy, well-bred puppy. With all the correct the answers we knew Bertie was the pup for us. So the night had come to collect our new family member, he’d reached 8 weeks of age and was ready to travel to his forever home with us. We’d

made sure the house was fit for a puppy - nothing dangerous available to chew (as we know puppies love to try everything at least once!) and no way of him attempting a great escape. We’d set up a comfortable area for him to sleep – a crate covered with a blanket to act Will with Bertie all grown up. as a safe den for him to retreat to with plenty of puppy pads to catch the inevitable ‘accidents’. We pulled up to the house where he was raised and he welcomed us with his usual playful energy that he still has to this day. It was quite sad to take him from his mother and litter mates – we certainly had a few sleepless nights for a couple of weeks. But he quickly adjusted to the norms of our human world – such as not toileting in the wash basket or chewing my wife’s favourite shoes. 5 years on he is still, if not even more so, an integral part of our lives and in some way brings us joy every day.” Taking on a new puppy or kitten is always a big commitment, you can find more advice on our Healthcare pages at www.ryedalevets.co.uk, or give us a call on the numbers below.

DENTAL HYGIENE

Healthy Start Bundle for your new Kitten or Puppy

Only £99* Includes everything to give your new pet the best start... Primary vaccination course Veterinary health check Worm & Flea treatments for two months Microchip Kennel Cough vaccine for puppies Monthly nurse consultations up to 6 months old (inc. advice on weight, nutrition and teething)

s part of our nursing role we offer a variety of nurse clinics on a range of different areas including worming, weight management, senior advice and much more! This month’s focus is dental hygiene. Periodontal disease is one of the most common clinical conditions in dogs and cats starting off with a build-up of plaque and calculus/tartar (formed from saliva) which can lead to gum inflammation (gingivitis). This can cause bacteraemia (bacteria in the bloodstream), which in severe cases can cause damage to organs like the heart, liver and kidneys. So how do you know that your pet has dental disease? Common signs to look for include: bad breath, loss of appetite due to pain which then leads to weight loss, swellings on the face, yellow/ brown covering on the teeth, swollen or bleeding gums. The best form of management is prevention... Brushing your pet’s teeth - Ideally this should be done regularly from an early age but older animals often tolerate it well. The best products to use are enzymatic toothpastes as these are more effective at breaking down any debris on the teeth. Never use human toothpaste as this can be toxic! Chewing toys - A more enjoyable way to help breakdown any plaque or tartar build up. To ensure that the toy won’t cause any damage to teeth, you should be able to push your nail into the surface.

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

THE GENERATION GAP

A

s I get older I have seen many changes in Dentistry. Not only in technical advancements but also in patient beliefs and expectations. When I qualified in 1996 the dental surgery was a very different by Christine Parker place, gloves were new and BDS (GDC 72136) root canal was reserved for the keenest of patients, as many already had part dentures in their 40’s and 50’s. Fast forward to 2020 and it’s a whole different world! We rarely see full denture patients these days as dentists and patients have a much greater desire to keep their teeth for life. As dentists this delights us but can also present great challenges. The desire to retain teeth does not always equate with the correct level of care required to do so. The ravages of high levels of dental treatment in their youth and middle age and advancing gum disease render many middle aged patients mouths only suitable for bridges , dentures or implants. More recently in the world of the’ Selfie’ the desire for whitening, a perfect smile and pouting lips, becomes more requested. A strange concept for older dentists , patients actually wanting more treatment! This is a worrying trend as a lot of treatment in our youth can be disastrous for our teeth and our pockets. Our priority is always for health behind the glamour and whilst we love doing cosmetic treatments and making our patients look their best it has to be balanced with their best interests. At Howardian Dental we are passionate about educating patients in the use of Interdental aids (for all their nooks and crannies) and electric toothbrushes, Oral B being our personal favourite and no I don’t get paid for that. Come and see us and see how we can improve your smile. For personally tailored advice contact Jan at Howardian Dental Practice.

EXCITING TIMES AT YORKSHIRE ARBORETUM

L

ast year was quite a year for Yorkshire Arboretum. The 120-acre garden of trees, nestled on the Castle Howard estate, celebrated a landmark 40th anniversary with more than a few highlights. Completed in June, the creation of a new 1.2km hard path on the site’s southern side further opened up the arboretum for access through the year. In November, acclaimed artist Mark Hearld debuted a new exhibition, showcasing the glory of autumn. On 24th May, the site also welcomed Lord Gardiner of Kimble, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity. He met with director Dr John Grimshaw, staff and arboretum trustees to review plans to build the UK’s first Tree Health Centre; a purpose-built facility to expand public awareness about the threats to our trees posed by pests and diseases. Looking ahead to 2020, the arboretum continues to develop plans for its Tree Health Centre project. The centre will offer courses and training to expand awareness about the threats posed to our trees and solutions to create a resilient treescape for the future. Preliminary ground work began in January, with construction expected to take 7 months and opening planned for the autumn. The arboretum continues to offer a unique events programme that includes guided walks, exhibitions, art and craft workshops and its annual plant sale Sun 7th June. Meg Huby began her year-long tenure as Artist-in-Residence in October 2019, and she will host a programme of workshops and drop-in sessions throughout the year. An exhibition of work, inspired by her time at the arboretum, will debut in September. Once again, the arboretum is running its popular Open Gardens scheme, beginning Sunday 5th April. 2020’s scheme will be the biggest to date, with over 20 gardens open to visitors. All proceeds fund new planting at the arboretum. The Yorkshire Arboretum opens for the 2020 season from 1st March, when the café also reopens, but Arboretum Members will be able to enjoy early entry from 1st February.

Open every day from 1st March until the end of November Find out what’s on at: yorkshirearboretum.org/events The Yorkshire Arboretum - Castle Howard - York YO60 7BY t: 01653 648598

in a cool, frost-free spot with plenty of natural light. They are ready for planting in a few weeks, when the sprouts are about 1cm (½in) tall. To help you decide what varieties to buy, think about how you most enjoy eating potatoes and follow my recommendations below:

PERFECT POTATOES BY PIPPA GREENWOOD

M

id to late February is ideal for planting seed potatoes, an incredibly goodvalue crop. The so-called humble spud is a versatile vegetable with a flavour and texture that will make you want to grow them year after year. On a patio, balcony or in a backyard, a special potato-planting ‘bag’ or a 45cm (18in) diameter pot can produce a useful crop of spuds from a single tuber. Make sure the container is well-drained, fill it about half to two-thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further 5cm (2in) of compost. As the foliage appears, add more compost to cover and repeat until no more can be added. Keep the container well-watered and wait! Most potatoes produce a slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to ‘chit’ or produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers, widest end uppermost, in a seed tray or old egg cartons placed 62

• Steamed potatoes: Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue or Lady Christl. • New potatoes: Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Nadine or Nicola. • Mash: Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour or King Edward. • Jacket potatoes: Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree or Valor. • Roast potatoes: Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi or Edzell Blue. • Chips: Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster or Edzell Blue. Choose early varieties for a newly created vegetable plot, especially if the soil has not been cultivated for several years. Earlies will be in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wireworm attack. To avoid the fungus-like organism responsible for potato blight (the cause of the Irish Famine in the 1840s) early varieties are better, but varieties with resistance to the infection are available. These include Valor, Lady Balfour or Colleen but Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona have the best resistance in my experience. Consider varieties such as Cara, Desiree or Sante if your garden is infested with slugs – again, earlies are likely to suffer less damage as they are not in the soil for so long. The biological control nematode Nemaslug can be used as a drench and, as it works under the soil surface, it has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife. Earlies are also ideal if space is at a premium and, as they are in the ground for less time, give you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop such as lettuce or salad leaves in the soil after the potatoes have been lifted. Visit Pippa’s website (www.pippagreenwood. com) for tips, books and gardening products.

his year is the 35th anniversary of the opening of the Hospice and we have exciting plans to celebrate throughout the year, including a Masquerade Ball, Evensong service at York Minster and a special installation of metal Sunflowers that can be dedicated in memory of loved ones. In Ryedale I will be hosting another Charity Lunch at The Feversham Arms in Helmsley featuring Ryedale celebrity Adam Collier. Adam will be doing his highly humorous talk on the Yorkshire dialect which will be followed by a delicious two course lunch. There will also be a selection of Yorkshire-themed stalls to peruse on the day. Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. February sees the start of our annual Accumulator Challenge! If you are a business or educational establishment in Ryedale who are up for an entrepreneurial challenge, this is the opportunity for you! You will be given a £35 loan and then have 35 days to turn your starting total into as much money as you can in aid of the Hospice. The challenge ends with a celebratory awards ceremony hosted by Minster FM at the Marriott Hotel York; it’s a really fun fundraising activity to be part of. For more information and to register your team place, please contact: Kathryn Craven, Corporate and Community Fundraiser Tel: 01904 77 77 77 or Email kathryn.craven@stleonardshospice.nhs.uk I look forward to seeing you all when I am out and about in Ryedale this year. If you would like me to visit your organisation to deliver a talk about the work of the Hospice in the Ryedale area I would be very happy to do so. I am always on the lookout for new opportunities to meet people in the Ryedale area, so please do get in touch.

The new portable monitors, costing more than £1000 each, will be worn by patients to help identify those with high blood pressure, which can increase the risk of a stroke and be an early signal of potential heart disease. Existing older equipment in the practice was showing signs of age, and increasing numbers of patients requiring assessment meant that there was often a waiting time of several weeks. Such monitors are recognised as the gold standard method of assessing patients for high blood pressure but are not provided to GPs by the NHS as standard equipment. Without them, patients would have to travel to hospital to have the monitors fitted and returned. “Thanks to the Lions, we shall now be able to offer more patients in the surgery much quicker local checks with the new monitors. They will help us to measure blood pressure very accurately while the patient carries on with everyday life,“ said surgery GP, Dr Jim Coppack. Ryedale Lions made a donation to help the surgery buy the new monitors after one of its own members, Geoff King, was himself placed on the waiting list for a 24-hour blood pressure check. He then realised just how many people were waiting several weeks because of insufficient equipment. “I explained the problem to our club members and proposed we used our funds to buy these new monitors. I know from personal experience that getting checked out quickly is very important for both your health and peace of mind and we are very happy to be able to help,” said Geoff. Ryedale Lions are now in talks with other surgeries in the area to discuss how they may be able to help enhance local GP services for patients. 71

Statistics show that 50% of UK adults own a pet, 24% own a cat (10.9 million of them) and a further 26% own a dog (9.9 million). Cats and Dogs are clearly the most recognisable domestic animals. My family has owned a dog, a rabbit, a snake and four cats over the past twenty years, as well as working to home rescue cats. Pets, whether they are dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, fish or tortoises, give us something to hold onto and focus on. They can be our best friends, keep us happy when we are going through rough times and become such a part of the family that not having them around doesn’t feel quite right. My cats give us plenty of reminders that they haven’t been fed. (and saying “I fed you literally 5 minutes ago” doesn’t stop their noise!) Dogs and cats are well known for their ability to help their owners when they are ill. One of my family’s cats, Mitchell, used to sit on me the night before I had a seizure or fell ill. We noticed she could sense it because the rest of the time she wanted nothing to do with me. Even dogs can save their owners, lifting their heads up if they have a seizure in the bath for example. And they are well known for helping blind or deaf people go about their daily lives. My point is that pets are more than simply pets. They are intelligent, loving and occasionally needy companions. They keep us sane and can even sense illness. They can keep us fit, help teach children about responsibility and make the most isolated of our society feel safer with them always near.  Pets are just amazing.
