Welcome to our April edition. After a really miserable winter and now we all know what a ‘Coronavirus’ is, let’s all hope that Easter marks the beginning of a new brighter season as it should; everywhere fresh and new, lambs, swallows, leaves on the trees, sunshine and longer days. We’ve brought together a huge range of local places to visit and events to enjoy this month. There is definitely something for everyone so please keep your Handy Mag ‘handy’. Our charity focus this month is on Camphill Village Trust that is celebrating its 65th anniversary but that also runs Kingfisher Café in Malton. After a year-long refurbishment we are very much looking forward seeing the modernised café and trying out the new menu. Gardening season is in full swing this month. We have the full range of services available to get your garden looking green and lush this year from garden centres and nurseries to fencing, paving and tree surgery. Well done to Miss Kilvington from West Lutton for winning our February competition. Until next time…

here is always more work to be done. Your kind donations are increasingly important to help Camphill Village Trust continue in their work to provide a life of opportunity to people with learning and other disabilities. The Trust has spent 65 years growing thriving communities across the UK. The first ever community, Botton Village in the North York Moors set out to create a space where adults with learning disabilities can achieve their potential and pursue their dreams. “Camphill Village Trust supports people to achieve their potential. Everyone is appreciated for their own talents and qualities. Because of this people grow in confidence and self-esteem.” And what a journey it has been. There are now communities across the country, including right here on your doorstep Croft Community in Malton. To celebrate their 65th Anniversary they are asking for your help! READY TO TAKE ON A CHALLENGE? The Trust relies on the generosity of its donors, and if you’re ready to take on a challenge, they would love to hear from you. 6
If you prefer to simply donate, then you can rest assured that funds go directly towards helping people with learning disabilities to lead an enriching life a life of opportunity. Here in Malton, the Croft Community runs the Kingfisher Café where members cook and serve dishes and hot drinks. They also create menus based on produce grown by Botton Village community and have access to craft groups, activities and more. “It’s amazing the difference it makes to someone’s confidence if they can choose how they live their life. At Camphill Village Trust choice and independence are such important elements of everyday life.” But that’s not all…the trust regularly arranges events that are open to everyone as part of their mission to integrate all the communities. You’re also welcome to come and visit Botton Village for example, or shop their handmade produce and crafts online. If you’d like to get involved with fundraising or would like to make a donation, visit www.camphillvillagetrust.org.uk or phone 01287 661238. Once again…thank you for your support.
KINGFISHER CAFÉ IS BACK OPEN FOR BUSINESS
ased in Malton, Kingfisher Café has just opened its doors after almost a year-long refurbishment thanks to donations from our generous supporters.
With all this upgraded equipment, they can now be even more creative with their offering of hot and cold lunches, sweet eats and snacks – as well as their delicious coffees and teas.
The café itself has been modernised and the kitchen extended, creating extra space and giving more people the opportunity of working. You can still expect the same friendly faces who will be there to welcome you in for a hot drink and food.
Their faithful customers will be in for a treat, and they are looking forward to welcoming new customers for either a drink or a meal in the near future.
EXCITED TO WELCOME YOU BACK! The Croft community started 1976 and Kingfisher Café (previously known as Camphill Bookshop) opened in 1978. The café offers its members - who are adults with learning disabilities - a place to lead a life of opportunity and develop workplace skills. The café provides working opportunities for community members to learn and develop catering, cleaning and customer service skills, and members are well and truly excited to be back open to the public after a long break. The space has been significantly repurposed so that people of all ages and abilities can access with ease, meaning members can carry on building friendships with regulars and engaging with the wider community. NEW MENU WITH CREATIVE DISHES New equipment has been installed so members of the Croft Community have been hard at work devising a new menu for you to enjoy plus lots of old favourites to eat in or take away.
Still as local, ethical & sustainable as before There aren’t many cafes that can boast growing your own produce and using local suppliers – but Kingfisher Café does all this as standard. Produce is grown by Camphill Village Trust’s other communities at Croft, Botton and Larchfield. What’s more, they source ingredients from local suppliers where possible, so your food will never travel far to your plate. It’s incredible to think that what started as a bookshop in 1978, has now become a bustling café that adds value to the local community and remains as true to its roots since it first opened. AND THERE’S MORE… You can still browse and buy pieces of work and crafts created by other Camphill Village Trust communities. It’s great to see the communities in the north working together to offer a full range of products. Kingfisher Café is located on Saville Street in Malton and is open Tuesday to Friday 09:30 – 15:30 and Saturday 10:00 – 14:00. See you there! 7

FOODBANK PREPARING FOR EASTER
s we approach Easter, Ryedale Foodbank would like to thank all those who donated food or money to the Foodbank over Christmas – we had a bumper Christmas! Donations exceeded our expectations, but so did the number of people we fed. Client numbers seem to have settled a bit, but please keep sending your food donations in as we are still feeding many more than we were last year. We are seeing a much greater demand for food parcels by people who have been moved onto Universal Credit, and are waiting for their first payments. Lists of the items we need most urgently are published on our Facebook and Web pages, and include long-life milk, tinned vegetables, tinned meat (ham) and sponge puddings. Please remember, that though we (and our clients) are very grateful for treats such as Easter eggs, we try to give a balanced diet for 3 days. Over Christmas we also provided lunch-packs for 112 children (who would normally be on free-school meals). Each brightly coloured pack contained a loaf of bread, spread, jam, cold cut meat/ cheese, squash/juice and some Christmas treats – enough to make packed lunches for a child for a week. These were delivered, by volunteers, on Mondays 23rd and 30th December in Norton, Malton and Pickering, and we intend on doing the same again over the Easter school holidays. We are still looking for drivers, especially anyone who would be able to drive our small van. We need drivers to move food from our warehouse in Norton to our distribution points in Malton and Pickering, to collect food from our collection points and to distribute the lunch packs over the Easter school holidays. If you think you may be able to help please contact Jacqui at info@ryedale. foodbank.org.uk

OLD KITCHENS DON’T ALWAYS NEED REPLACING… TURN YOUR EXISTING KITCHEN INTO A BRAND NEW ONE
MESS-FREE WORK One of the downsides of having work done in the house is the inevitable mess and cleaning that comes after. But with AAA Decorator’s technique, there is minimal dust and dirt. Unlike kitchen installations or traditional painting methods, there is no sanding required. Instead, David applies the doors with a special primer after a thorough stabilising clean to make the layers of paint adhere to the existing units.
AA Decorators can turn your existing kitchen into a brand new one without the hassle of a complete renovation. Here’s
David, the owner of AAA Decorators, explains how it’s possible to “breathe new life into an existing kitchen” and achieve the look and feel of a brandnew one in your home. “Most doors and units don’t need replacing, which can be a costly undertaking”. Instead, David has perfected the art of painting existing kitchen doors using a technique he has mastered for over 30 years. And the results are amazing.
This means you won’t come back to a house that’s filled with dust at the end of a day. And you won’t have to deal with the disturbance that comes with having a full renovation. HOW IT WORKS David offers a free initial home visit to understand exactly what you need. He will also come with a selection of paints and colours for you to look through. To book your free visit, or for more information, call David on 07454 965509 or email aaayork@ gmail.com.
ENDURING QUALITY “This is not a quick fix” says David. It’s a timeconsuming process that’s designed to give you a hard-wearing kitchen that will stand the test of time. Using his expert knowledge, built up over 30 years, and specially adapted process he can achieve the sparkling new kitchen you envisage, and in the exact colour you want. “I’m meticulous”, explains David. He painstakingly prepares the kitchen doors and puts a special treatment on them, which means he is able to work with both hand-built kitchen and laminates.
The treatment includes a blend of paint and additives to make sure the kitchen doors remain scratch-free and damage-free for decades to come. What’s more, he almost exclusively uses Farrow & Ball paints, a brand that’s trusted for its top quality and coverage - using up to eight coats wherever necessary.
Give Your Kitchen an Upgrade with beautifully restored & painted kitchen doors BEFORE
A specialist repainting finish on any surface can give a new lease of life for an old tired kitchen or a change of colour scheme. BEFORE
With virtually no mess, using a unique refinishing method in conjunction with Farrow and Ball paints, makes your old kitchen look like new again at a fraction of the cost.
For specialist painting on existing wood doors call David at AAA Decorators on 07454 965509 or 01653 690582. firstname.lastname@example.org 19

e may have seen the worst of the storm season for the year, but living in the North of England you can guarantee that we will continue to see rain throughout the year. So how best to protect your property against these downpours? The damp specialists at Peter Cox provide some of their top tips. Penetrating damp is the general name given to damp problems that allow rainwater to make its way into the internal side of your home through defects in the building structure. To protect your home against heavy rainfall and related penetrating damp problems we would advise that you, check your guttering for blocks or cracks and ensure downpipes are properly connected with no gaps or faults in the joints. You should check for damaged brickwork and pointing and Roofs and chimneys should be investigated for any missing or cracked tiles and is sealed correctly. Rising damp is caused from water held in the ground being drawn into the property by capillary action. Most homes have a functioning in-built damp proof course, but if that has become defective or damaged then walls may become susceptible. Signs of rising damp are damp tide marks up to a metre high, salty stains and peeling or cracking paint.Rising damp problems will only degrade and get progressively worse over time. For more advice or if you think you may have spotted a damp problem in your home then call us on 01904 899 757 to book your expert survey from one of our qualified surveyors. Peter Cox are a founder member of the Property Care Association, a Which? Trusted Trader and we are rated ‘Excellent’ on Trustpilot with over 1000 independent reviews. ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

THE SPORT FOR ME
’ve never been a fan of winter. The bitterness of the weather makes my arthritis ten times worse. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, the cold weather will have disappeared and been replaced by spring. Because I for one can’t wait any longer! This month I’d thought I’d focus on something that I enjoy, keeps me active, and is perfect for those with disabilities – although everyone can play. Boccia is a Paralympic sport with no Olympic equivalent but is similar to bowls. It is a target sport which tests both muscle control and accuracy. The main aim is to get your balls the closest to the white ball that is thrown at the start of each match. Think Bowls but with softer balls and no standing up and anyone can participate. I’d highly recommend it. But that’s just me! When I was still at secondary school in Pickering, I took part in Boccia at the Sainsbury’s School Games. It was quite a challenge as I was, at that time, still anxious about going places I didn’t know. With the moral support of my school worker, I was able to get into the zone and enjoy myself, not letting anything get in the way. I played the tournament twice, winning a silver and gold. Boccia was a revelation. I had finally found a sport I could take part in without getting breathless and exhausted. I finally felt at home. And I feel like that every time I take part. On the Boccia England website there’s a quote from sportswriter Simon Barnes that says, “It’s the heart and soul of the Paralympic Games, or of all sport. You haven’t seen sport till you’ve seen Boccia.”
There are new Scarboccia’s Boccia sports sessions starting at Pickering Memorial Hall on Wednesday’s from 11am to 1pm. Able-bodied or disabled, why not give it a go?

HELMSLEY WALLED GARDEN
I ANOTHER ‘BLOOMING’ SUCCESS
FOR THORNTON LE DALE
he Thornton-le-Dale Village Hub have received the fantastic news that following their 2019 achievements of winning gold and best new entry in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition, they have been selected to represent Yorkshire in the large village category in the Britain in Bloom 2020 final. A representative of the Village Hub said: “It is a great honour to been given the accolade of representing our County. 2019 was our first entry into Yorkshire in Bloom and because of the support and hard work of all our volunteers it has proved to be a great success for the village. We now have to produce something very special for our entry this year. We hope that everybody in the village will join us in presenting Thornton-le-Dale in the best ‘blooming’ way’.” The ‘in Bloom’ committee have decided to create a trail around the village based on plants that attract pollinators, entitled ‘BEE FRIENDLY’. They hope that lots of residents will plant a small area in their garden or planter outside their houses with plants that attract pollinators. They are also planning to run a ‘decorate a wheelbarrow’ activity in the village. In order to raise the essential finances to fund the ‘Bee Friendly’ entry, the hub are organising a range of activities including a spinride, coffee morning and a duck race. They are also approaching local businesses to ask for support. The Village Hub’s 160 volunteers of all ages have put in thousands of hours over the last two years: litter picking, developing the village pond area, creating a nature trail for young people, painting the railings, providing lunches for elderly residents, running charity events, creating a Hub choir, publishing a biannual newsletter and preparing Yorkshire in Bloom. They now need your help to make their entry into Britain in Bloom successful. If you would like more information and feel as though you would like to support the work of the Thornton-le-Dale Village Hub Volunteers, please contact Denise Rajab on drajab@ trmkt.com or Roger Sharples on rogersharples@ hotmail.com.
t’s always an exciting time of year as we open to visitors and this year promises to be busy. We’ve been hard at work over the winter creating new areas and developing others. We’re excited to have developed our very own Secret Garden using plants named in the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This garden celebrates our part in the forthcoming feature film The Secret Garden starring Colin Firth and Julie Walters released nationwide this Easter. We’ve done a lot of work planting up a new Iris Border along the east wall, the Long Border will be sporting newly planted peonies and other perennials and the Hot Border will be bursting with even more colour this year as we bulk up the current planting. We’ve a full programme of courses and events for you to enjoy. For full details and to book for any of the courses do go to our website https://www. helmsleywalledgarden.org.uk/the-garden/ the-secret-garden/. The Secret Garden weekend in May will celebrate the new film with themed events in the garden and at Helmsley Arts Centre. There’ll be a return of our popular Birds, Beasts and Bugs weekend in April and we’ll be having an Apple Celebration weekend in October bringing you the stories and histories of some our great Yorkshire apples. We’ll also be growing our own plants for sale in our plant centre and of course the shop will be stocked with gifts and other goodies for you to take home. So spend a day with us, relax and enjoy knowing that, just by visiting, you are helping to support us in maintaining the garden and using nature, gardening and teamwork to benefit disadvantaged adults.

A ONE-STOP LOCAL SHOP
AT GROUND SOLUTION SERVICES
fter only 3 years, Ground Solution Services has quickly established itself as a professional and trusted installer of hard and soft landscaping. Scott and Gary, business owners, want to pay tribute to their fantastic local teams. “Our teams work hard to ensure all of our clients are completely happy from our first conversation through to completion. I would particularly like to mention Ben Smith, a recent local addition, who is definitely heading for bigger things and leading a team in the future.” Ground Solutions deliver creative and innovative designs for any outside space. With a range of materials available including resin-bound, block paving, Indian stone, porcelain patios, concrete and tarmac there is something to suit any situation or budget. Scott says, “We can even mix the media used to create interesting designs but also keep the project costs down.” After time spent testing different aggregate mixes and researching customer preferences, Ground Solutions promises to bring you the most sought-after and attractive resin-bound mixes on the market with a great range of colours and styles. One of the best things about resin bound drives is that maintenance is kept to a minimum. They allow water to drain, reducing puddling and are far more weed resistant than other surfaces. Ground Solutions are always keen to work with local suppliers rather than big merchants. “We source supplies from local wood yards and stone merchants,” explains Scott. “This keeps prices down for our clients.” As part of their efforts to give back to their local community, Ground Solutions have also supported Wigginton Tennis Club with donated resin, Sheriff Hutton Cricket Club, Hopgrove Playing Fields as well as sponsorship of a local junior football team. The Ground Solutions Services teams have a genuine passion for their work, achieving high standards as a result of their attention to detail which helps them to fulfil their client’s wishes completely. TOP RATED ONCE AGAIN! BY JULIE WILSON, CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AT PENLIFE ASSOCIATES
he Times 2020 Guide to the UK’s Top Rated Financial Advisers (in conjunction with VouchedFor) has been published and we’re more than proud to announce that 4 of our advisers made the cut! Asif Sadullah, Ricardo Da Silva and John Walker also made the list in 2019, but this year they are also joined by Deborah Jacobs! Financial planning is the best job in the world. Most consumers – and sadly far too many advisers – don’t know what real financial planning is. There’s a world of difference between the old floggers of pensions and ISAs, and professional financial planning that takes care of clients and helps them live their best lives. The best fund is not going to change your life. But
proper financial planning most definitely will.
and what sort of life they want to have in the future.
Here at PenLife we are way more interested in our clients’ lives than we are their money. Proper financial planning doesn’t depend on the sale of a financial product. These are merely tools to help get the job done. We could never advise clients on their money under we have a deep and rich understanding of their needs, their goals, their hopes and fears and their dreams.
2. Financial Planning We have to tell people the truth about money. We need to be honest about what needs to happen for them to get and keep the life they say they want.
There are three distinct parts to a professional financial planner’s job: 1. Life Planning We are genuinely interested in our clients and their story. We need to know them really well to do our job properly. We need to know where they are now in their life, and how they got there. What sort of life they have now
3. Financial Advice This is the third and least important part of our job. It involves finding the right product or investment, if one is necessary, to get the job done. Your money is there to serve your life, not the other way around. And done properly, financial planning is the most rewarding job in the world. A job that allows clients to get and keep the ideal life they want. And that’s why our advisers skip to work in the morning and dance home again at night.

The Old Weigh opened it’s doors in the last week in February and is located at the bottom of Pickering market place within the same building as Beckside Gifts. We provide a wide selection of food produce including flour, cereal, dried fruit, loose leaf
tea, coffee, spices and beans. We also stock eco-friendly household products and toiletries, offering laundry and shampoo refills.

Mr Brownlow takes him in. Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back. The award-winning adaptation of the classic Dickens’ novel is a musical theatre masterpiece, perfectly showcasing the talents of Ryedale Youth Theatres large ensemble young cast as they bring some of the most memorable characters and songs to life.
embers of Ryedale Youth Theatre are thoroughly enjoying the final rehearsals in the lead up to their production of the 2009 West End Version of ‘Oliver’. Consider yourself at home with Lionel Bart’s classic musical. The streets of Victorian England come to life, as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim,

eck Isle Museum in Pickering re-opens for 2020 with a programme of new exhibitions and activities. ‘Fur, Feather & Fringes – fashion from the 1920’s’ celebrates fashion from 100 years ago. After the First World War, women’s fashion began to adopt a more natural body shape, abandoning the tight, shaped corsets of the 1800’s. Dresses had shorter skirts and a dropped waist, often in light colours including pale green, coral and cream. New fabrics were introduced, with manmade ‘Art Silk’ and Rayon. Fur was widely used, especially in large fur collars, and feathers featured on hats and trims. Sequins and beads we heavily used, particularly on ‘flapper’style evening dresses – even in Pickering! During the Easter holidays, young visitors will be able to explore the museum with a new ‘Explorer’s Map’, finding souvenirs brought back to Pickering by intrepid travellers in the past. The first Craft Day of 2020 will be on 15 April, with lots of crafters in action around the museum. Visitors can see butter-making, bee-keeping, blacksmithing and much more. pril sees the second of our St Leonard’s Hospice Business Club meetings in 2020, therefore this seems to be an ideal opportunity to let you know a little bit more about our Business Club and how you can get involved. Being a member of the Business Club is a great way to meet other businesses who support the work of St Leonard’s. We have some great members already, including the York Marriott Hotel, Handy Mag, Barratt David Wilson Homes, Harrowell’s Solicitors and The University of York. We hold four networking meetings across the year, and will also have a Christmas Party this year, hosted by Business Club member York Barn! Part of being a member is the opportunity to host a meeting at your premises if you wish, giving you a great opportunity to showcase your business and facilities to others. Joining the Business Club is simple. We have three annual tariffs to suit businesses of all sizes: 1-5 employees £100, 6-19 employees £150 and 20+ employees £250. Our next meeting is on Tuesday April 21st at 8.30am and you don’t need to be a member to come along to your first meeting. Just send me an email if you would like to attend and I will do the rest. The April meeting is on a York Boat River Cruise and promises to be a really engaging experience. There will also be an opportunity to win a dinner cruise for two! If you would like to know more about the Business Club please do get in touch on 01904 777777 or email kathryn.craven@ stleonardshospice.nhs.uk If there are enough Ryedale businesses who would like to get involved, we could even start a Ryedale Business Club Hub! SPRING IS IN THE AIR TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
W RYEDALE CYCLE FORUM IS NOT JUST FOR CYCLISTS!
f course we are very keen on cycling, but car-free paths through pleasant places should be available for everyone.
Are you a walker, cyclist, wheelchair user, horserider, pram-pusher, dog walker? Do you feel restricted by busy roads in your neighbourhood? Do you have an idea for a new multi-user path, to get away from the cars, but don’t know how to make it happen? Have you achieved a new path, and would like to tell others how you did it? It is not really rocket-science is it? But it does take quite a bit of persistence, time, energy and team-work. Would you like to talk through the options for a new route or path, and find a team to make a start? Or would you like to make a routes suggestion, but have others to make it happen? Contact us at Ryedaletownandcountrytrails@ outlook.com, or ring Helen Gundry on 07960 160130. We have some useful information about cycling on our website, and we keep adding more. Subscribe for free to keep in touch at www. getryedalecycling.com. Anyone with an interest in cycling, or in multi-user car-free routes, is welcome at Ryedale Cycle Forum meetings. The next meeting is Tuesday 2nd June, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Ryedale House. KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP is a founder member of Ryedale Cycle Forum
e are so lucky in the UK to have the seasons, and spring is traditionally a time of new beginnings. Are you one of those people that waits until a dental problem rears its ugly head before going to see the by Christine Parker dentist? Are you anxious that they BDS (GDC 72136) will chastise and judge you? Here at Howardian dental we often see irregular attenders whom we recognise as perhaps having had a bad experience in the past which has made them fearful of coming regularly. Our approach is to show these patients how we can really help them, not only with their immediate problem but by carefully managing their mouth until it becomes the clean, comfortable environment they thought might never be possible. A bonus is that clean, healthy mouths need far less treatment in the future. When we say we can transform your smile and with it your confidence about going to the dentist we really mean it! HERE IS SOME OF OUR RECENT ANONYMOUS PATIENT FEEDBACK: “The dentist and nurse put me at ease…I am a very nervous patient.” “Honesty, patience, dedicated and for a very nervous patient went above and beyond to ensure all my needs were met. An absolutely fantastic service.” “Everyone made me feel welcome and relaxed. I consider myself as a nervous patient. I was made to feel very comfortable during all of my appointments.”
For professional dental care conducted by the same dentist in a clean, caring environment call Jan at Howardian Dental Practice. Make this April a time for a new beginning for your mouth.

EVER WONDERED WHY YOUR PET HAS SMELLY BREATH? YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED HOW EASY IT CAN BE TO GET THEM SMELLING FRESH AGAIN!
OUR VET, WILL SENNITT, TALKS ABOUT HOW WE CAN HELP.
t Ryedale Vets we often have owners come in wondering why their pet’s breath smells so bad. It often causes a major barrier between pets and their owners, making it difficult for them to enjoy the usual cuddles pets want to give us. There can be several reasons by your pet’s breath may not be as fresh as it once was, but one of the most common reasons is the build-up of dental plaque and tartar. The build-up of plaque and tartar occurs gradually over time - in a similar way to people - when cats and dogs eat their food and produce saliva. The saliva combines with naturally occurring bacteria in their mouth and forms a sticky clear film called plaque. Plaque is so sticky that it will stay on their teeth unless brushed away each day. If it is left on their teeth, the plaque hardens into a brown odorous substance called tartar. This tartar is what we most commonly find as the cause of pet’s smelly breath. What’s more concerning is when the tartar starts to come in to contact with their gum line. This causes the gums to become red an inflamed which is not only painful, but the bacteria can easily travel in their blood and contribute to heart, kidney and liver diseases. This is the main reason we recommend brushing your pet’s teeth daily to keep on top of the plaque building up on their teeth. It’s often the case that we see pets at the stage where the tartar is too thick to be removed by brushing alone. In these cases, we are able to perform a scale and polish procedure to return the teeth to a clean, smooth surface which owners can then maintain with daily brushing. This allows the inflammation in the gums to resolve and the risk of further disease is greatly reduced. ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
Brown tartar on the teeth of a dog (circled)
If tartar is left on their teeth for too long, inflamed gums can start to recede, and bacteria can start to infect the tooth roots – leading to abscesses and possibly the need for teeth to be extracted. Therefore, its important to have your pet’s teeth checked regularly to make sure this tartar isn’t progressing to more serious dental diseases. There can be many other reasons why your pet could have smelly breath so, if you’re concerned, it’s important to have them fully examined by one of our friendly vets in case there are any other health problems that might be affecting them. We’ll be able to talk through all the options available for treatment and make plan that suits you and your pet best. At Ryedale Vets all our pet healthcare experts are available to advise you on you pet’s dental health. Contact us today on the numbers below or visit www.ryedalevets.co.uk.

ur senior pets are very special to us so it’s important to make sure we are giving them the best quality of life that we possibly can. Sadly old age comes with an increasing risk of health problems, but by having regular health checks and monitoring your animal’s behaviour we can do our best to give them a long and happy life. Veterinary nurses can play an important role in managing and supporting senior patients as well as their owners. Regular nurse clinics can also help to re-assess pain and re-adjust the care plan accordingly. Regular health checks can not only help manage arthritis but can also identify any other degenerative problems through: Blood samples - These are taken from your pets jugular vein located at either side of the neck. We can run these in house or send them to an external laboratory for more extensive checks. ‘Nose to tail’ examinations - Performed by nurses including checking eyes, ears, mouth, nose, listening to the heart and lungs, checking the skin/ coat condition etc.
Blood pressure monitoring - Changes in blood pressure can be an indication of underlying problems such as chronic kidney failure, hyperthyroidism or anaemia. Stress can also be a cause of high blood pressure, and to eliminate this factor we offer home visits to perform regular checks in your pets natural environment. We can always give you advice and guidance to support you in managing your pet’s arthritis and senior care. Nurses are ideally placed to discuss nutrition, diets, weight management and supplements. Also, we can give you a guidance on exercise regimes and environmental adjustments including mental stimulation. If you would like to seek more information on arthritis management please visit the following website: https://caninearthritis.co.uk Veterinary Nurse Corner is written by Gabby Wright SVN and Karolina Szczecina RVN, Station House Vets ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Unfettered, and free from domestic chores, As a bird heeds its migratory call, So am I drawn towards the great outdoors, To tread the steep haunts of the dry stone wall, And revel where the lofty buzzard soars. Free to roam, and not be governed by time. Not beholden to the tyrannous clock. Such indolent hours are carefree and sublime. For gathering one’s thoughts and taking stock of the countryside in its pomp and prime. Soft painting zephyrs stir the tops of trees, As I stroll down the shadowed aisles of woods, Where the towering pines scent the breeze, And grey beeches wave fans of bursting buds, And celandines host the murmuring bees. Snake-like, the meandering river slides. I walk its banks lined with whippy sallows, Where neath the roots the furtive otter hides, And the heron fishes in the shallows. A river; Rolling on to salty tides. When on the boulder strewn paths of the fell, Becalmed by the curlew’s querulous call, My senses are filled by each hue and smell, And the whispering of a waterfall. The great outdoors weaves a powerful spell.

Supporting people and businesses to make the best of technology
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
