2022 EDITIONS

Building the Foundation for Literacy Success

Letter from the CEO

The Foundation of Literacy Success

Welcome to the NEW 2022 edition of Handwriting Without Tears! This year, our program's lineup has been expanded with new digital components and an emergent writing Pre-K solution designed to help you prepare students with foundational skills they'll cherish their entire lives.

Handwriting is essential. When students practice letter formations, they create the foundation for reading and writing skills they will use throughout their lives.

The traditional classroom has seen its share of changes over the past year. Educators are facing new challenges each day while embracing new norms for learning. Our primary job at Learning Without Tears is to ensure that educators can meet the needs of students. That's why we've developed innovative digital enhancements for Handwriting Without Tears, including an Interactive Digital Teaching Tool and Student App. Now you can reach students with effective pre-writing, handwriting, and writing instruction regardless of whether you are teaching remotely or in a classroom environment. To gauge the success of your instruction, you can turn to our Screener of Handwriting Proficiency, the industry's leading handwriting assessment and observation tool.

The research is clear—handwriting can influence student’s reading, writing, language use, and critical thinking.* Without explicit handwriting instruction, students are missing a vital literacy building block. *Saperstein Associates, 2012

No matter what challenges arise this year, please know that our team is here to support you, your students, and the families counting on you. Sincerely,

Terry Nealon, CEO

Bring your Pre-K and kindergarten classrooms to life with everyone’s favorite buildable friend, Mat Man! Made from Wood Pieces and the blue Mat, Mat Man embodies our unique approach to drawing with multisensory activities and strategies that help young learners develop strong drawing and cognitive skills.

To make the transition to writing more seamless, children must master important readiness skills. Mat Man can help!

HELPS IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES

Children who receive Mat Man instruction demonstrate improved Draw-A-Person (DAP) test scores by honing their body awareness, drawing, and building skills.* *This study was conducted by Occupational Therapist Geeta Bhojwani during the 2006–2007 school year in Head Start preschool classrooms in the Green Bay, Wisconsin area.

Emergent Writing (Pre-K)

Introduction Children will learn social-emotional and readiness skills, develop fine motor skills, learn to hold a crayon, and explore with manipulatives like Wood Pieces to help them learn body parts, position words, and the vocabulary to describe capital letters and numbers.

Our developmentally appropriate Pre-K program builds emergent writing skills, giving students a strong early literacy foundation and preparing them for the rigors of elementary school and the years ahead.

MANIPULATIVES

Using manipulatives for emerging writing skills makes children excited to learn, and helps them develop a love of letter building. Teachers love the diversity of skills that can be taught with each one and how they incorporate a hands-on experience. •P urposeful manipulatives help children progress from tracing letters to writing their names •U ses play-based techniques, like music and dance, to teach skills •D igital components enhance learning remotely •E quitable materials in English and Spanish WOOD PIECES SET FOR CAPITAL LETTERS • Teaches the four, key letter formation steps for all capital letters •C hildren learn to assemble capital letters through imitation • This foundation skill aids in all future letter and number formations

Professional Development

School-to-Home Connections

We empower educators with expert-led professional development sessions — both on-site and online — that impart effective tools, strategies, and techniques to help students make handwriting a natural, automatic skill.

Research consistently shows that strong school-to-home connections help children build self-esteem, curiosity, and motivation to learn new things. Home and school are the two most important places for young children. When teachers and families work together, everyone wins.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES (SCHOOL-BASED IMPLEMENTATION) GETTING STARTED This foundational tier provides your educators with the instruction, strategies, knowledge, and skills needed for beginning curriculum implementation.

TARGETED Builds on the foundations by targeting specific instructional outcomes based on curriculum usage and educator-identified personalized learning needs.

ADVANCED This comprehensive tier dives deep, building on targeted implementation with student lesson observation and individualized or group coaching, addressing advanced differentiation, modification, and remediation.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING EMERGENT WRITING (PRE-K) Discover proven, engaging multisensory strategies to foster early writing skills. Educators will experience how to use music, hands-on manipulatives, and technology to help children develop emergent writing.

•M ake sure you have scheduled communications with families, using emails, letters, virtual meetings, or even podcasts. • S hare important assessment information about your student’s progress. • S hare curriculum with families so they can explore resources available to them. • S end home letter charts so families are using the same words for letter formation as the teacher. • E ncourage families to read together consistently and help children recognize letters all around them. Point out letters in signs and logos— wherever you go. •S inging in the classroom? Share the music you are learning with families, so they can sing at home too.

PRINT (GRADES K–2) Learn how to implement our integrated print and digital curriculum that uses engaging multisensory techniques and research-based methods to help students begin to master handwriting.

CURSIVE (GRADES 2–5) Get an introduction to our comprehensive, easy-to-use cursive curriculum. Our developmentally appropriate teaching order and vertical style ensure cursive success.
