This needle -felted chick by Tanya Ng is going to make the perfect Easter present for my family.

I’m sure you’ve all noticed that I’m always trying new things out and get really obsessed and have to learn as much as I can, but lately rather than it being purely craft-related (although I am still crafting, that will never stop!) I’ve taken a real interest in photography. I was given a digital SLR camera and ever since have been busy taking photos of everything. I particularly like that I now have the ability to take photos of all my creations – as I give quite a few of them away it’s nice to be able to keep a nice photo for my own memory. And there are so many great ways to incorporate them into my crafts as well, whether it’s in a scrapbook, or printing onto fabric and making something like a memory quilt. So my plan for the year is to have at least

one nice photo from each of the big occasions of the year and to turn them all into something to remember the year by. And fittingly this issue is filled with crafts for every occasion, so even if you don’t get out photographing events, you can at least celebrate by making something, like a shamrock wall-hanging for St Patrick’s Day or a posy of paper flowers for Valentine’s. And if you want some more inspiration or to pick up some great products to get you started, be sure to visit www.patchworkandcraft.com.au

PROJECT

Bright Triangles Jemima Flendt cut five warm and five cool fabrics into half-square triangles to create this cheerful cushion. Measurements Finished size: 47cm (18½in) square

Materials • 12.5cm x 51cm (5in x 20in) strip each of solid pink, fuchsia, apricot, lemon, bright yellow, green, aqua, light teal, teal and grey fabrics • 20cm (1/8yd) black/white stripe print • 50cm (5/8yd) text print • 56cm (22in) square of lightweight Pellon • Frixion heat-erasable marking pen • Matching sewing-machine thread • Grey quilting cotton • 18mm (¾in) round buttons: 3 black • 45.5cm cushion insert (size 18) • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat • General sewing supplies

Note: It is recommended all fabrics be 100 per cent cotton, pre-washed and well ironed. Requirements are based on fabric 112cm (44in) wide. The ¼in seam allowance used throughout is included in the cutting measurements. Please read the instructions before you begin.

From the white/black stripe print, cut: – two 2½in strips for the binding. From the text print, cut: – one 13½in strip, then crosscut two 13½in x 18½in rectangles.

Trimming the squares to the correct size will allow for greater accuracy and give your cushion a more professional finish.

CONSTRUCTION Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 4½in pink, fuchsia, apricot, lemon and bright yellow squares with the Frixion pen. Pair them with the same-size green, aqua, light teal, teal and grey squares in a random order with right sides facing and raw edges aligned. Sew ¼in either side of the lines then cut on the line and press the seam open. Repeat this for all the squares to make 40 half-square-triangle squares , then trim them to 3½in square with the seam in the centre – only 36 will be needed but the extras give you more variety.

1

ASSEMBLY Lay the squares out in six rows of six in a pleasing design.

3

2

Note: Jemima turned the centre squares with the warm colours facing inwards. She turned the squares surrounding it with the cool colours facing inwards to form a green/teal/grey diamond. She turned the squares in the corners to form cool and warm lines following the sequence already formed.

Sew the squares together in rows with right sides facing, then press the seams in alternate rows in opposite directions. Stitch the rows together and press the seams to one side.

4

CUTTING

QUILTING

Cut all strips across the fabric width. From each of the solid pink, fuchsia, apricot, lemon, bright yellow, green, aqua, light teal, teal and grey fabrics, cut: – one 4½in strip, then crosscut four 4½in squares.

5 6

28

Lay the Pellon square on a firm surface, centre the cushion front right side up over it, then pin-baste them together. Stitch ¼in from both seams on the green/teal/grey fabrics with grey quilting
