Retail and Romance: Jane goes to the Ball Exhibition 29 July to 7 October Visitors to this exhibition may be surprised to learn that Jane Austen knew the town of Basingstoke well and attended dances in its Assembly Rooms. Austen wrote about the world she knew, and that most definitely included how one behaved at a ball, what one wore and what one ate – the gentry, the gowns and the gossip will all be explored in this exhibition. She was an avid consumer herself, and her letters evoke the period with descriptions of what she wore and when. FREE, donations welcome

Jane Austen: Dressing for the Dance 13 September, 2:00pm – 3:30pm A brief introduction to the changing fashions of Jane Austen’s day will be followed by a walk around the exhibition. Join Gill Arnott, Curator of Art at Hampshire Cultural Trust, for this talk and tour of the Retail and Romance: Jane goes to the Ball exhibition. Cost: £5 per person
