to the senior residency requirement within their Global Ed application. Waiver requests will not be approved for students wishing to attend a program the spring of their senior year. The College maintains an extensive list of pre-approved programs managed by other colleges and educational organizations; this list is published on the Global Education & Study Abroad section of the College’s website. Students interested in a program that is not preapproved must meet with the Director of Global Education & Study Abroad a minimum of six months before the program starts to petition for program approval. Summer Programs. Three different types of Global Ed programs are available to students during the Summer Term: • Hampden-Sydney Faculty-Led Programs are taught by H-SC faculty and staff and organized through the Global Education & Study Abroad office. Most programs are 3-5 weeks in length: abroad programs are a minimum of three weeks; away (domestic) programs are a minimum of two weeks. Programs are announced each fall and applications and deposits are usually due early in the spring. Matriculated, continuing students are eligible to apply if they have a GPA of 2.0 or higher at time of application. • The Virginia Program at Oxford is a six-week summer program at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University. Students earn three credits in history and three credits in English. The program is administered by a consortium of HampdenSydney and five other Virginia colleges. Matriculated students are eligible to apply if they have a GPA of 2.5 or higher at time of application. • Summer Term Programs with External Providers are not managed by Hampden-Sydney. Matriculated, continuing students are eligible to apply for College approval if they have a GPA of 2.5 or higher at time of application. Academic Credit for Study Abroad and Study Away Programs. Courses completed as part of the Virginia Program at Oxford, the Washington Semester Program, or Hampden-Sydney faculty-led programs are treated as Hampden-Sydney courses with grades calculated toward students’ GPA. Courses from College-approved programs offered by other institutions and external providers are eligible for transfer credit. Courses approved
for transfer credit are listed on the student’s H-SC transcript along with the grades earned but they are not calculated into the student’s H-SC GPA. Students on these programs can only receive credit for courses in which they earn a C or higher and which have received approval from the appropriate department chairs. Students are responsible for ensuring official transcripts are sent by the institution or program directly to the Office of Global Education & Study Abroad.
COOPERATIVE PROGRAMS Cooperative Programs in Business and Management CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY: MASTER OF FINANCIAL ANALYSIS. Each year, Hampden-Sydney shall nominate up to five H-SC students in their junior or senior year as candidates for admission to the Master of Financial Analysis (MFinA) program. The names of nominees are submitted by January 30 of each application year. Nominees must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Hampden-Sydney students who are nominated through this process receive a waiver of the application fee and are not required to submit a GMAT score with their application. HampdenSydney students apply directly to Christopher Newport University through the normal application process and are expected to meet all admission standards, including program prerequisites. Christopher Newport University will make an admission decision in the semester that students are nominated. Final acceptance is contingent on the student graduating from Hampden-Sydney with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. DUKE UNIVERSITY FUQUA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS EARLY ADMISSION PROGRAM: MASTER OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES Each year, the Dean of the Faculty and the President together shall nominate up to four H-SC students in their junior year to interview as candidates for early admission to the one-year Master of Management Studies (MMS): Foundations of Business program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. The names of the nominees are submitted by January 30 of each application year. Hampden-Sydney students who are nominated through this process receive a waiver of the typical application fee for the MMS program, but apply directly to the Fuqua School of Business through the normal application
