The Impact of HCI P1 – Society

Improve usability The number of computerized devices that are being used in these years has increased dramatically and this is all because of usability improvements. The interface in these devices has been changed since past years so users can easily understand and interact with the device. The first generation of computerized devices ran on CLI interface which was really hard to use because you needed to know a lot of codes to only do simple tasks with it. The first computers were only used by professionals but when the GUI came out, the popularity of computerized devices has also increased and so did the usability of these devices. Smart Phones People use phones to communicate with each other every day from all around the world. This had very big impact on the societies and the way people communicate with each other. They can also use their phones to read the latest news, text others or listen to music. These phones that support these kinds of features have really improved usability and interface. New GUIs that are used in devices are very high quality and have a lot more features than the past. The Smartphone interfaces are mostly designed by icons and work by touch and their functions are really simple and mostly demonstrated in visuals than texts. Satnavs Another good example is a satnav which is extremely helpful and completely changed the way people travel and use maps. Most people don’t use maps anymore and rely on their satnavs which work amazing with precise accuracy. The interface is also user friendly and easy to use. When you are inputting an address, it gives you suggestions or if you want to find a petrol station or a restaurant, it takes only a few clicks. It has also voice directions which can help people with visual difficulties. Modern satnavs have extra functions that can help you avoid traffic or switch lanes in time before you approach an exit. Speech recognition Speech recognition is used in many different computerized devices to make it easy for disabled people to interact with that device. Most of the operating systems of the computers come with speech recognition. This helps people with visibility problems to use the computer easily and do task using their voice. New phones like iPhone have also a speech recognition function which is being improved every while to do more functions.

Game Controllers Different game controllers have been designed for different purposes. Some game controllers are specially designed for some games so users can interact with the game better. Some controllers are made for the people that has problem using the normal controllers. For example the change in the size so they could hold it better. The gaming industry is very big now and gaming is becoming more popular each day and more and more people are joining every year. Some controllers use a sensor like PlayStation Eye or Xbox Kinect, this uses sensor to identify the part of user’s body and use it as a controllers. This has a very big impact on society because it has changed the game industry and how people use games. Remote Control Remote controlled devices are used in many areas for example, it can be used in hostile environments like a robot to disarm a bomb. This could be lifesaving because you don’t risk a human’s life in case something goes wrong. Military remote control planes are also used to drop bombs or to spy and gather information without having a pilot in the plane. It is being controlled from miles away and still be efficient. The impact of remote control on society is that people feel safe and the danger is reduced to minimum level. Fly by wire Fly by wire is an automated flight control which is installed in aeroplanes. The pilot will still control the plane but if he does something wrong that may cause the plane to crash, the automated system will notice it and assists the pilot. The impact of this on society is that aeroplanes are much more safer now than before and the chances that they crash, are reduced. That means more people will use planes for travelling. Domestic appliances Now days everyone uses some kind of computerized device at their home. It could be a wash machine, personal computer or microwave. These devices are designed to be as simple as possible so it could be used by everyone with different age groups. Icons or shapes has been used to demonstrate their functions. This also assist people with visual impairments because they no longer have read the text as it is all in visuals. This has a impact on society because everyone can use these devices with having little knowledge about computers.

P1 – Economy Speed up inputs In some shops they use portable barcode readers where the customers can take it with them and add the products while they pick them from the shop. Everything is calculated in that barcode reader and at the end they just pay for it and leave the shop. This makes the input a lot faster because there is no need for someone else to do all the work at the end. This is also less likely to break down because it has no moving parts. This impacts the economy because more people are likely to go shopping as they wouldn’t be queuing for a long time. Automatic judgment of outputs This system is used in many companies and organizations. This is used for example in a fruit company where they want to separate the fruits with different sizes and sell them in different prizes. In some companies where they have important products or things that they want to keep secure from fire or anything else, they use these systems to measure the air temperature and in case of any changes, alarm security or management team. This has impact on economy because, security goes high and in case like the company separating fruits with different shapes, can make more money by selling them in different prizes. Reduced complexity This can have a big impact on economy because the products that are designed should be simple so the user, understands it better. If it is complex, this may cause the user to change his/her mind from choosing the products because of having trouble understanding how it works. For example in a car, the systems that are used should be simple so the user can still use them while driving. Voice inputs The cost for call centres has been magnificently reduced in organizations because of using voice inputs. For example phone banking uses an automated system which helps the customers to check their bank detail or make necessary changes without talking to someone. There are loads of other systems that use this such as a satnav which gives the user instructions or in video game.

Thought input Thought input will allow users to control something with thinking. They can control things like wheelchair. This will impact the economy because disabled people will also get a chance to find a job. This means that they will work easier and more of them become employed as their productivity will increase.

P1 – Culture Laptops/mobile computing Using laptops or mobiles to send and read emails, checking the market or call someone is in our everyday life. These technologies has completely changed the way people communicate with each other even if they don’t speak each other’s language. With these technologies you can also access web where you can get information about other countries or cultures. This has a very big impact on the society. These technologies has also some downsides to the culture where the face-to-face and verbal communication is reduced because it is done all through email and texting. Domestic appliances It is hard to find something at home that is not automated or doesn’t used computer technologies. Devices like wash machines, dish washer or a fridge has completely changed the way people live. These devices made our life a lot easier and they give us more time to spend on other activates. Games Videos games nowadays are very advanced and people with different age groups are involved in playing videos games every day. They connect people from all around the world with completely different cultures and make it possible for them to connect and communicate with each other using voice or text. I personally have many friends that I have met the online while in a game. These games force these users to work together therefor they should speak the same language or understand each other to complete a task. Deskilling work Deskilling means to replace someone’s work by a machine which is a lot faster and cheaper. This will impact the culture because wherever deskilling happens, the amount of unemployment increase. Deskilling also make people feel worthless because they have been replaced by a machine and their skills are no longer needed.

Developing nations Developing nations are those countries with lower technology level and they are also poorer than most of other counties. HCI had a negative impact on these countries because a lot of waste from richer countries are being sent there. Some of waste contain contains dangerous chemicals that can affect the of people there. People of some of these countries are working for richer countries for a really cheap price. For example when you make a phone call to phone company, mostly likely your call is answered from India or a lot of products are being assembled overseas because it is a lot cheaper there.
