SPECIALIST’S INSIGHTS

6

Summer to many people means the approach of the annual summer holiday.

and transportable these could be. In gilt metal with decorative purple panels, this small work of art is safely housed within its original protective box.

Whether jetting off abroad or enjoying a ‘staycation’ your travel necessities always include the all-important toiletries. Luxury home comforts in miniature packaging so wherever you are in the world you feel primed.

If your summer will be spent entertaining rather than travelling, how about investing in a claret jug and tot glasses like lot 17, perfect for formal dinner parties. Or perhaps add an antique twist to a barbecue by serving the sangria or punch in a large and impressive silver bowl like lot 115. Afternoon tea is also catered for with numerous tea services ranging in price from £200 to £700 that could be paired with the beautiful set of silver gilt and enamel spoons of lot 112.

This custom is not a modern invention, for hundreds of years people have taken with them ‘essential’ supplies to accompany their travels. Large cased dressing table sets, similar to the example in lot 75, that contained bottles, jars, implements and often brush and mirror sets, were a must for a wealthy lady or gentleman.

what a big business this was and how silversmiths catered for a wide range of tastes. These bottles would be filled with the owner’s perfume of choice and were easy to transport on any trip. Miniature examples could also be taken to evening balls so a quick ‘top up’ could be applied half way through the night!

Within this auction we also have numerous silver cased and mounted scent bottles dating from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Their variation in shape, size and decoration demonstrate

It wasn’t just toiletries that were deemed important travel companions. Timepieces were also taken on long journeys to be set up on a night table for the duration of a stay. Lot 16 demonstrates how small

This auction also contains a wide range of jewellery to cater for all budgets and tastes, with antique period pieces through to modern simple diamond rings. So whatever your interests, hopefully there will be something in the sale to brighten up your summer (whatever the British weather holds in store!)

SPECIALIST’S INSIGHTS The much anticipated Silver, Jewellery and Watches sale is finally here. The watches in this sale are primarily of the highest quality. Featuring rare pieces, and pieces that are in exceptional condition despite their age, this has to be one of the most exciting sales on the calendar for a watch collector, (and indeed those seeking to buy jewellery and silver!) The final lot within the watch section (lot 250), the 1961 Tudor Submariner Ref. 7928, presents an exciting opportunity to acquire a watch with close affiliations to the ever-iconic Rolex Submariner, the Tudor is, by no means, an homage to the Rolex or a “knock-off”; it is a piece that was cased by Rolex and assembled by Rolex’s sister brand. Hans Wilsdorf founded Tudor in 1926, 21 years after the birth of Rolex, he decided to create watches of exceptional quality, using movements that remained accurate and reliable, but using marginally cheaper production methods and materials.

50

The Tudor Submariner 7928 was designed as a tool watch, and the example we have has been used as one in its lifetime. But as many collectors are beginning to embrace the wabi-sabi outlook on watches, I can say without doubt that this is a watch with some genuine patina that can only be formed over nearly 60 years of use!

(b) Halls Holdings Limited do not accept responsibility for the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so certify, and in such case the auctioneers do so as agents of the seller and are not themselves responsible for such claims. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO JEWELLERY BUYERS Prospective buyers please note that lots marked with ◉ may be subject to VAT on the hammer price. Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Prospective watch buyers should note that the working order of watches is not guaranteed. All weights stated in the catalogue are approximate only, these figures are for reference only and prospective buyers should satisfy themselves as to the accuracy. Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO BOOK BUYERS Prospective buyers should be aware that general wear to include; creasing, light foxing, small tears, bumped corners, worn boards or weak spine/joints, will not be specified in the catalogue descriptions. Any substantial losses/wear to include detached boards, detached spines or extensive graffiti will be described as ‘at fault’. Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Although every effort is made to note damage and restoration, the absence of such information does not imply that the lot is free from defects. Detailed condition reports and email images can be obtained on request until 4.00pm the day prior to the sale. 76
