Halle Leversidge 6201719 My Musical Story My music story was interesting for me to reflect on because I have had an extensive background in music. Coming into this class I was very excited to take what I already know and learn strategies on how to teach it in a classroom. Growing up my father was always very interested in music so I have always been surrounded by sounds. I can remember him playing me the many bands that helped shape him in his youth including The Beatles, Queen, REM and Led Zepplin. I also remember him playing me these strong female musicians like The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin and K.D Lang and looking up to them in ways that have shaped who I am. I have always felt drawn to music because of this and without music my life would have been completely different. When I was 8 I got involved in musical theatre in school. They would do a production and I always wanted to be involved. This then turned into becoming part of the Hamilton Children’s Choir that led me to travel and compete in singing competitions abroad. Which ultimately led me to the Ontario Opera company where I performed in a professional Opera. From there anything musical I could get my hands on, I participated in. This included school bands, choirs, performances, musical theatre‌ anything. I learned so much from my time doing this, in music theory yes, but mostly just about who I was as a person. All of these moments from my childhood really gave me the confidence and rush that I needed to want to succeed and express myself through music. It definitely caused me to be so confident in myself and dedicated to the projects that I choose to pursue. It gave me the outlet to focus on my expression and creativity, to learn through the hard parts and to work towards something that I could practice and improve on. I always did well in school and did not really have to try, so it was something that I had to work hard on but still loved, so it pushed me to do better. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a teacher as well. Although I have always had an artistic inclination and a lot of my friends ended up pursuing a career in music or acting, I always wanted to take what I knew and be able to help kids in the same way that it helped me. I think that because of

Halle Leversidge 6201719 my positive experience it has completely contributed to a lot of the positive aspects of my personality and life. A lot of kids do not have the same support that I did, especially in regards to the arts, so I always wanted to be that teacher that you remember for pushing you to try new things and to help you learn and grow throughout the process. I think it is really important to know all of the major concepts and to understand the theory behind music, but we also need to focus on the parts that help to shape people and create positive influences in their life. I want to take my background in music to be able to take those important aspects that we need to teach through the curriculum, and do it in a way that positively effects the growth and wellbeing of every student so that they are engaged and supported. That is why I am so excited and ready to be a part of these art classes, particularly music. From the reactions of my peers in our first class, a lot of people seem scared to teach music and apprehensive because they might not be “good at it. I want to find strategies to try to change that thinking in students when they are young. I want them to believe that music is something that everyone can connect with and has a part in. I am currently teaching a vocal class at Columbia International College with high school students and I can see how unsure they are in music because they feel that they might not be as good as their peer, or because they never had that support when they were growing up. I want to try to start to change that way of thinking and create a classroom environment where everyone’s needs are supported and where it is a place to let go and have fun while also learning. The one thing I am most interested in this course is to collect tools to be able to achieve this. From the first class, I can already see that it will be very beneficial because as much as I might know the concepts like pitch and dynamics, and what kind of classroom I want to have, seeing it in action and practicing it will be what really defines how my future practice will be. I plan to take in as much information as I can and try to combine both what I am learning and my past musical history to one day create the learning environment that will support all of my students and to encourage them to love music, and all that comes from it, like I do.
