about me

My name is Haley Eckenrod and I am currently a junior majoring in Interior Design at Iowa State University. My future goals are to become LEED certified and to work at a commercial design firm. My best qualities include: being a creative thinker, a collaborative team member, and possessing strong communication skills. I strive to create designs that are functional and aesthetically pleasing for users of the space. Outside of interior design- I enjoy pursuing my creative hobbies, staying active in any way I can, being outdoors, and spending time with friends and family. This past fall I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Rome for a semester. During my time there, I gained a deep love for travel and learned a great deal about design.

The site used for our retail design project was the Fendi store in Rome, Italy. This meant figuring out how to make displays work in narrow hallways and carefully considering the circulation of staff and potential costumers. We were paired up with students from a fashion school in Rome who were able to give feedback throughout the design process, These student’s work was bold and inspired by the urban environment which meant designing a store that did not distract from the product. A futuristic approach to a retail store was what the clothing designers envisioned.

Our fashion designers worked with us through sketches and ideas to come up with displays that best showcased their product. Then, I custom built the different displays in Revit to specifically fit their line of pieces.

cafe project floor plan

For this project, we were given an existing room to design a cafe within. A challenge of this was designing in regards to set windows, doors, and columns. I space planned for different users needs and incorporated a variety of seating in order to create a space fit for large groups, individuals, and anywhere in-between. On the right page are pictures of the cafe model I made. I learned how to use a laser cutter and used that to produce a clean and accurate model.

One aspect of this project was to produce technical drawings and draft neatly by hand. We were given a square footage range similar to that of a small house and had to come up with a floor plan that would be suitable for a guest staying on Iowa State’s campus. Additionally, I gained technical knowledge on how houses are built and learned about wall, roof, and floor construction.

residential project block diagrams

Our residential project had a site location of Serenbe, Georgia. We were tasked with designing a home within a small lot that fit in well with the surrounding community. My client wanted multiple seating areas, a large kitchen and dining room to host guests, and connections to outside. Other wants of the client included a terrace and a workout studio. This project challenged me to sketch and think through many relationship diagrams in order to use the space and square footage as efficiently as possible while satisfying the wants and needs of the client.

creative interests drawings

I drew these buildings during my time studying in Rome, Italy. I felt as if I was always looking up at all of the beautiful architecture and wanted to capture it in the form of drawing. I titled this series “Looking Up and scoured the city for a variety of towers. These drawings were done in graphite pencil. I started out my sketches and proportioning in a very light pencil and then moved towards a dark graphite as my drawings developed.
