The Project All over the world, there are remarkable young people who accomplish extraordinary things even though they haven’t yet turned 30: We call them talents. Those people are active in many different areas, but have all something in common: a desire to achieve and excel. Despite their ambitions, these young talents are often only connected at a local level. Twenty years from now, however, they are likely to become the new leaders. What if these young people would already meet today? And what if you could join this conversation? Sandbox is the first global conference and community for the brightest and most ambitious young talents under 30. The core: A global meeting place for talents We believe that real relationships are only formed when people can meet face to face in an inspiring environment. This is why the core of Sandbox is a yearly conference. The inaugural event in Q4 2008 will bring together about 100 to 150 of the most interesting young achievers from all over the world. The goal of these conferences is to establish an inspiring meeting place where talents build global connections and create new ideas that will ultimately help them accelerate their personal projects, as well as their careers. The vision : a global community for talents In the long run, Sandbox wants to be more than just a yearly conference; it wants to become the first global community for young talents. After the first conference, Sandbox will expand its services by providing an online platform to keep its members connected at any time and by organising regional and local events. With all its activities, Sandbox will focus on bringing young talents from all over the world together and providing an inspiring environment where they can meet and exchange their visions, beliefs and ideas. Sandbox is not yet another social network; it is a highly selective community of talents where people meet face to face and keep connected in between events. Striving for excellence It is true: Every community is only as good as its members. At Sandbox, we want to bring together people that are as diverse as possible – and yet have one crucial thing in common: they all strive for excellence. To become a member, every candidate has to apply; his application will then be reviewed by an independent selection committee.
The Opportunity The founders of Sandbox first met at the age of 17, when we were all involved in student politics in Switzerland. Seven years later, all the people we met at that time have moved on into different areas. But there’s something that connects all of them: They are very ambitious and active in their respective fields. And we’re convinced that they still will be active when they are 55 and have moved up the career ladder. This is the motivation behind Sandbox : Bringing together today the people that might change the world tomorrow. Going global But aren’t those people already very well connected? It turns out they are – but on a local or maybe regional level. Despite their ambitions, young talents mostly lack international connections. Sandbox not only gives them access to a group of smart and like-minded people, but also allows them to quickly build up a global network that can become very helpful for their careers and projects. Getting the best This is exactly what sets Sandbox apart from similar initiatives. Our primary goal is to be more than a recruiting platform that connects young achievers with potential employers: we want to connect the talents among themselves, giving them a possibility to exchange their ideas and experiences. This gives you not only the possibility to get the best of the best in the increasingly competitive “war for talent”: you will also get to know what makes the young talents tick and what their visions for the future are.
The Target Group There are two main criteria that Sandbox has for its member base: diversity and excellence. We want members from as many different backgrounds as possible, and we want them to be the best in their respective areas. Who they are When we say young, we mean it. Sandbox members are in their twenties. The reason we’re drawing the line at 30 is that, while there are a lot of possibilities for accomplished people to travel and network, there is no global platform for young talents below this age. But what do we mean when we say talent? The definition of the word is probably different from person to person. For us, a talent is a young achiever: someone who has great ideas – and can turn them into reality. Someone who is always looking for new challenges and willing to take risks to make his dreams and visions come true. Membership at Sandbox isn’t limited to a specific career or a certain industry. On the contrary: We want the artist to meet the entrepreneur, the researcher to talk to the politician, and the idealistic NGO worker to debate with the smart venture capitalist. We are convinced that people at this age already achieve extraordinary things and that this kind of exchange not only helps building up an invaluable network, but also has the potential to initiate a vast number of new ideas. What they want But is this also what our target group wants? We asked them in numerous one-on-one talks and in an online survey conducted with 150 talents worldwide, covering many top universities and four continents. The response was, in short: Yes. The young talents that we talked to are extremely eager to meet other young talents. They are looking for a global talent platform outside of universities where they can share their experiences and collaborate on new ideas and projects. They want to connect with like-minded young people – and with you as a Sandbox partner. Turn the page to read more about the conference where the talents (and, hopefully, you) will first meet.
The First Conference Where and when can you meet all those interesting young people? Our answer (for now) is : at the inaugural Sandbox conference, happening in the fourth quarter of 2008 with around 100 to 150 attendees. Sandbox wants to start small – to show you and our members the magic that is created when a group of smart young people comes together. In the long run, Sandbox will grow and expand the range of services to its members. An inspiring meeting place For the inaugural conference we are looking at different innovative locations in major international business cities. We want to actively integrate our location and local partners into the conference program and create a truly inspiring environment. Serious fun At the first conference, the talents will meet for two days to exchange their visions and ideas. To establish a truly inspiring atmosphere, we are putting great emphasis on a carefully prepared program of high quality and innovative content. We will do this with a mix of classic presentations and interactive workshops. Specially pre-selected members with an extraordinary story will present their ideas, visions and beliefs. Additionally, we will feature a selection of senior guest speakers. And, of course, there will be plenty of time and opportunities to talk, get to know each other and network. After all, while we’re very serious about Sandbox, it still should be a lot of fun for our members. Our benchmarks While setting up Sandbox, we have been greatly inspired by the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos and the TED conferences in California and around the world. We aim to match those events in terms of their professional set-up and their innovative content. So, why are we confident that we can bring together 150 smart global talents - and much more in the future - and convince them to join Sandbox? We rely on our existing personal network and are supported by talent scouts and a board of advisors. Read more about the team behind Sandbox on the next page.
Who we are We are very excited about creating a global network for talents worldwide. But why are we convinced that we have what it takes to make Sandbox happen? First, thanks to international work-experience, and university studies abroad our team has built up connections with other talents worldwide. Second, from former projects we bring a strong background in project and event management, providing us with the necessary organisational skills. And third, most importantly, we feel that we know exactly what our target group wants – because we are part of it. Young experience The core team of Sandbox consists of four young people with an average age of 25 from Switzerland: Fabian Pfortmüller, Nico Luchsinger, Antoine Verdon and Severin Rüegger. We have studied or are studying finance, law, history and political science and have worked in an international context as consultants, politicians, event managers and journalists and have founded our own event management company. Additionally, we all have created our own projects, ranging from setting up a liberal think tank to organising the country’s biggest student party with more than 8000 guests. With this background, we feel confident that we can not only create a network of diverse and interesting young talents, but also live up to the highest organisational standards. Talent Scouts In order to reach out to talents worldwide, Sandbox is setting up a network of international talent scouts. Our aim is to cover places with high percentage of talented young people with an especially assigned Sandbox member who screens the local environment and invites new talents to join Sandbox. Besides the top 30 universities worldwide and big business cities, we are attaching great importance to talents from emerging markets. Advisory Board An advisory board, consisting of over-30 people with extensive international experience in the conference and global network sector, supports the core team. The board advises the Sandbox team on strategic issues and provides access to international contacts. The board currently includes Bruno Giussani (European director, TED Conferences; member of the Board of Visitors, Knight Fellowship at Stanford University) and Susan Kish (Director European Energy Forum, Founder First Tuesday Zurich, former Vice President XING).
