“Type design moves at the pace of the most conservative reader. The good type-designer therefore realizes that, for a new fount to be successful, it has to be so good that only very few recognize its novelty. First Principles of Typography Stanley Morison

HISTORY

Since 1685

The Hungarian punchcutter Miklรณs Kis designed and cut this typeface in about 1685 while working in Amsterdam. It was not cut by Anton Janson, a Dutch punchcutter who worked in Leipzig in the seventeenth century. For many years this typeface was wrongly attributed to Janson, and the font still erroneously bears his name. Some of the Kis punches and matrices made their way to D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt in 1919. Linotype Janson was cut in 1954 under the supervision of Hermann Zapf, and was based on the original Kis punches. Prof. Horst Heiderhoff led the Linotype Design Studio in the most recent expansion of Janson in 1985. Now a versatile family of eight weights, this version of Janson Text is the most authentic digital version of the Kis types. With its legible, sturdy forms and strong stroke contrast, Janson Textโ„ข has proved very successful for book and magazine text, and it continues to appear in the ranks of bestselling types.

From: Hungary Born: Misztótfalu, 1650 Died: 1702 What he does: Type Design, Punch cutting Miklós Tótfalusi Kis Transylvanian protestant who, sent to Holland in the last quarter of the seventeenth century to learn printing, became one of the leading punchcutters of his time before returning to Transylvania to print bibles. His teacher, in Amsterdam around 1680, was Dirk Voskens. His types, the original matrices for which were obtained by Stempel in 1919, were revived for hot metal as Janson by C.H. Griffith for Mergenthaler Linotype (1937), and as Janson and Ehrhardt (1937) from Monotype. Good digitization exist of Monotype Ehrhardt, and Frutiger supervised Linotype’s 1985 digitization as Janson Text; Bitstream’s digitization is Kis.

The seventeenth century offers a variety of stirring historical settings, including the Civil Wars in England between the Royalist supporters of King Charles I and the Puritan Parliamentarians; the Thirty Years War that engulfed Germany and its neighbors; the migration from the Old World to the American Colonies and Canada; the last of the witch persecutions, especially the hysteria in the Puritan colony of Salem; and major advances in science led by mathematicians like Kepler and alchemists like Isaac Newton. For the migration-rich seventeenth century, it is difficult to classify novels set partly in North America and partly in Europe by setting, so all novels set in North America appear in either the British Isles or the Continental Europe categories, depending on where the immigrant characters in a stand-alone novel or series of novels primarily came from. Novels with seventeenth-century settings outside Europe and North America (Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East) will be grouped in separate pages, by continent, when posted.
