This is where it all starts When you set out on a long walk all your problems fade away, becoming less important with every step you take. When you run and push it to the limit the answer becomes clearer. When you attempt your most difficult climbing level, everything around you disappears, sound recedes and your body and brain work together to achieve the extraordinary. Afterwards you will forget how it happened – you just ”did”, reached the moment that is also sometimes known as ”flow”. In that instance the equipment we create has to perform at its very best and help you to exist completely in the moment, in harmony and on your terms. Regardless of the activity. Achieving your goal requires solid work. For us it’s all about creating ingenious and sustainable designs, finding environmentally friendly and functional material and carrying out a whole list of tests, in order to ensure that the product does what it has to when it has to. On the following pages, we have combined our backpacks, shoes and clothes together with inspirational travel reports and tips, which we hope you will be able to make use of for a long time to come. Now all that’s left is for you to get out and find the moment. And when you succeed, so do we.

Nicolas Warchalowski CEO for Haglöfs

Jojoleden -Sweden's highest road We are wandering through Europe's last wild frontier, nearly 150 kilometers north of the arctic circle and almost 100 km east of Kiruna. We've come here to follow the Jojoleden -Sweden's highest road - for a few hot August days. Originally, the route involves going from Unna Reitasvagge to Tarfalavagge (or vice-versa of course) via Kaskasavagge and Koupervagge – by ascending three mountain passes which, in Swedish terms, are fairly high. From Tarfaladalen one can then continue south towards Laddjuvagge and Kebnekaise mountain stations or towards Nikkaluokta and civilization. We chose to begin our adventure in Stora Räitasdalen, immediately north of Unna Räitasdalen, for the chance to experience one of the most celebrated views in our alpine world, Nallopiken.

TEXT: ANDREAS FRANSSON PHOTO: DAVID KVART

We're not here to win any prizes, but just to enjoy where we happen to be at the moment. The only thing that exists is the meditative repetition of putting one foot in front of the other, enjoying the view, and finding the next spot to take a little break. Now and then we talk about something we noticed, like a lemming crossing the path, or the sharp cliff formations we can see on the distant mountains. Our thoughts wander as freely as we do, and here, far away in another world, our worries become insignificant. Jojoleden is a dream for many hikers, and it is one passage in our alpine world that is relatively little traveled. Its name, Jojoleden, meaning the "yo-yo trail" in Swedish, is very apt, as it is constantly heading either up or down. Even though there are no extremely rigorous passages and there are no passages with elevations exceeding more than around three hundred meters, it's the closest thing in Sweden to an "alpine pass." Working at a steady pace, we follow the valley east and then turn towards the south. We pass the little Nallo cabin at a distance. It's serenely encircled by the mountains, and we can see a few hikers resting on the steps. We avoid going there so as not to break the spell that the day's

hike has created, a feeling of being completely alone in our own little world. We do two fords before turning westwardagain, into Unna Räitasvagge. Every time we set foot in the cold, clear water, we awake from our monotonous thoughts, while at the same time feeling the everyday stress back at home dissipate more and more. From time-to-time we sit down on a rock and have something to eat, and sometimes we just stop and marvel at the expanse of nature; but mainly we just continue walking and enjoying one another's quiet company. From the thickly wooded, short-growing landscape, we reach a desert pavement. Unna Räitasvagge greets us with barrenness and a chilly wind. The only life found here are patches of moss, and two birds that keenly observe us from their flights on the other side of the valley. Now we are in a land without roads. We finally reach the cabin and lake at the foot of the Räita glacier. Aside from the light break in the wind, the valley is completely quiet. We help each other set up our tents and then eat in silence. The fatigue after a long day has taken overtogether with the longing to be able to lie down in a warm sleeping bag.

9

The temperature difference between the summer-like Koupervagge and this valley is more than 20 degrees, and we put on all the extra layering we have before taking on the steep descent.

The next day we arise to another day of high pressure and sun against our tent flies. The little lake is crystal clear and the mountains stare out over their realm. After a light breakfast we continue south, up into the pass between the Pyramid and the Knife Edge. After a good hour and a little light scrambling, we stand on the peak, looking down towards Kaskasevagge. From here we can see the steep mountain walls and glaciers of Kaskasatjåkka and Kaskasepakte, and the back of the Knife Edge, which continues off towards the Ceakcha peak. Below us we see our descent toward the valley, its glittering lakes and our next campsite. We have ample time today and after a relatively short day stage we pitch camp long before the sun has started to fall. We await the night in our sleeping bags outside the tents, accompanied by tea, food, and stories from the past. The next day we head up towards the next pass and once again the landscape changes character and the soft mossy landscape in the Kaskasevagge is replaced by green and warmth. We eat lunch enjoying a fantastic view over Kaskasepakte, Drakryggen and the northern and southern peaks of Kebnekaises. After this we head down to the clear lake Kouperjavri, which is at the bottom of the valley, encircled by mountains At its eastern end there is a white sandy beach, and with a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 F), we don’t wait long

10

before we set down and start splashing in the cold water. Sitting in the company of a friend, air drying alongside a lake deep in our own wild mountain landscape is probably the most lasting image I will take with me from our hike. The passage between Koupervagge and Tarfalavagge is the last relative difficulty remaining on our trek. Soon we are standing on the top of the pass immediately south of Kaskasepakte, Sweden’s Matterhorn. This mountain is our country’s seventh highest mountain, where one can find classic climbing treks, Sweden’s largest and steepest northern face, and the legacy of the catastrophic helicopter accident of 2000 With the sun on our backs we admire the Tarfalavagge, covered by shadow, cooled by the large glaciers. The temperature difference between the summer-like Koupervagge and this valley is more than 20 degrees, and we put on all the extra layering we have before taking on the steep descent. For a short passage we are forced to cut steps into the glacier, but we are soon back on solid ground and follow the back of a moraine down to Tarfala lake and the Tarfala cabin. As dusk falls, we arrive at the cabin. Dawn and mist come together and we make our way through a world of white all the way down to Laddjuvaggi. Then we follow the valley east towards Nikkaluokta and civilization.

Nallo means needle in the Sami language. There is also a beautiful summit in the Lapland mountains. The main peak is 1,585 m high, and Nallo is 1,540 m high.

JOJOLEDEN difficult passages: There are two so-called crux passages on the route. The first is at the pass between the Pyramid and the Knife Edge. It is relatively steep here and in snowy conditions it is possible to slip and injure oneself. If the snow has melted, a simple snow climb turns into simpler scrambling - in other words hiking with passages where you need to use your hands. A fall can result in serious consequences. The second passage is at the descent towards the Tarafal valley, where you are forced out onto the glacier.

Temperature differences are significant between day and night, so don’tforget to pack extra layers even in the summer.

backpacks and bags A century of know-how Haglรถfs has been making backpacks since 1914. Today, just like then, we are just as exacting when selecting materials, planning out functions, and constructing carrying systems that can be adjusted to your particular body and activity type. In our product range you will find backpacks for climbing, skiing, running, and hiking, as well as travel bags designed either to circle the globe or just go back and forth from work. And no matter which Haglรถfs backpack you choose, you will know that there is nearly a century of experience behind every detail, from top lid to hip belt.

All of our backpacks have a water-resistant coating, PFOS/PFOA-free.

Human Anatomy and the demands of backpacks Man has always been carrying different things both heavy and bulky that are essential to survival. Humans can bear heavy loads if the upper body and the common center of gravity is positioned over the dorsal motion axis and above the pelvis. If the load falls far from the spine, the weight creates torque that pulls the upper body backward. If this occurs, you automatically compensate by moving the torso and the center of gravity so that it sits above the pelvis again. This is done by bending forward, causing a harmful strain and an uncomfortable situation. To counteract this, there are different carrying systems with shoulder straps and a hip belt. It’s also important how you pack your backpack. The carry system provides stability for the backpack and helps to distribute the weight between the shoulders and hips. How the backpack is packed, with the weight distributed evenly in the backpack, is central for the carrying experience. The closer the weight is to the spinal cord, centering weight over the pelvis, the less energy is needed to carry the backpack. The solution with shoulder straps and a hip belt also makes it possible to vary the load between them.

22

h ag l Ăś f s Fa l l / w inter 2 0 1 1

• Put the heaviest items close to your back and as high up as possible in the pack. • Lower the center of gravity somewhat while skating and skiing to improve your balance. • Position the items you will be using during the day as accessibly as possible. • Pack in mesh packers or equivalent. • Map and compass quickly accessible in the top-lid pocket.

General adjustment and packing tips When you adjust your backpack there are some general things to consider. If possible, set the length of the back and loosen all straps. Put on your backpack and tighten the hip belt. Then tighten the shoulder straps. The weight should still be mostly on the hips.

Differences between men and women

Men generally have a greater length of the back and broader shoulders than women, and women also have a different curvature and profile over the bust and hips than men. This affects the backpack design and adjustment for carrying in an optimal and comfortable way. The back panel, shoulder straps, and hip belt in Haglöfs Instant Adjustable System feature gender-specific design.

HAGLĂ–FS RECYCLABLE One of the most important factors in limiting a products' negative environmental impact is that HaglĂśfs designs and develops products with high quality and timeless design. This means products with a long life cycle that are not "disposable". Our designers also undergo sustainability training so they can better create the right products from step one of the development process. For example, we work continuously with increasing the level of recycled and recyclable material in our products. In the 2010-2011 fall/winter collection, 29 percent of all materials meet these requirements, and we have brought this up to 35 percent for spring/summer 2011. Once a product consists of 50 percent recycled or recyclable material, it is itself considered recyclable.

Footwear Developed in a Scandinavian environment Haglรถfs' origins in Scandinavia has given us great advantages when developing our footwear. In Scandinavia, we have cold, ice and rain. We have woodlands, marshes, mountains and rocks. The experience of all these different conditions has made our footwear durable, stable and usable. But good footwear not only provides protection from external elements, it also protects the foot inside the shoe. Therefore, an insole from SOLE is included in every pair of Haglรถfs' shoes which ensures an anatomical and ergonomic footbed, formed precisely around your foot.

HEEL CUPS The heel cup is an important part of the shoe's functionality. It provides support for the foot and contributes to a straight and steady step.

TOE CAPS Most of our shoes have reinforced toe sections, which serve a number of purposes. The toes are extra protected of course, but it also means that the shoe keeps its shape. This also includes the toe box, therefore ensuring that the step is natural with maximum push-off.

HAGLร–FS' SHOE LASTS Our shoe lasts are slightly wider at the front part of the foot, then taper into a well-formed heel cup. It gives the foot space for maximum push-off, while the heel cup is stabilizing.

In February each year we organize the Haglรถfs Artic[sic] Weekend, in Bjรถrkliden, Sweden. It's a long weekend full of activities, seminars and adventures. By participating you have the opportunity to borrow and try equipment from Haglรถfs and Dynafit, among others, and this year it was also possible to experience sleeping like an Eskimo in an igloo.

62

sleeping bags Haglรถfs' sleeping bag range includes down and synthetic sleeping bags for all seasons. There are many deciding factors in how you experience a night outdoors. The fact that you have chosen the right sleeping bag is one of them, but it is equally important that you are dry and don't go to bed hungry. You are the one warming up the sleeping bag, after which it's the bag's design and insulation, as well as the outdoor temperature, that determines how well you utilize the heat you produce. Haglรถfs' sleeping bag range includes down and synthetic sleeping bags for all seasons. For minimum pack volume and weight, choose from the down sleeping bag range. If you are planning on spending a lot of time in damp environments and want something easy to manage, choose from our synthetic sleeping bag range. We do not use down plucked from living birds.

h a g l รถ f s F a l l / w i n t e r 2 0 11

63

It is almost as important to choose a sleeping bag that isn't too warm as it is choosing one that isn't too cold. When you are warm your body produces more moisture vapor that needs to escape from the sleeping bag. The fabrics used in our sleeping bags are as thin as possible enabling good vapor permeability. All insulation options used in our sleeping bags have non-moisture absorbing properties, allowing the moisture to condense on the outside of the bag. It's a good sign if the outer fabric of the sleeping bag is damp or even frosty when you wake up. This indicates that the insulation and fabrics have not prevented the escape of the moisture you have produced during the night.

Keep your sleeping bag dry in a Drybag. It is also a good idea to bring along an extra comfy hat to sleep in, for example the Actives Merino Beanie.

Haglรถfs' clothes Dress properly The layer-on-layer principle has great advantages and the idea is simple: First of all a base layer which helps to remove sweat from the body. Then one or more insulated mid layers, depending on the temperature and activity and finally a shell layer to protect against wind, rain and snow. The options for combining these three layers are endless depending on the sort of activity you want to engage in. Only you, your body and your previous experiences can determine how well ventilated or how waterproof you want your shell jacket to be, or how warm the mid layer needs to be. On the following pages you can read more about our products and about how your body and the different materials function and work together.

How you function PHYSIOLOGY AND MICRO-CLIMATE The human body is very sensitive to temperature fluctuations. The optimal core body temperature is 37°C (98.6°F) +/– 0.5 °C (0.9°F). The body's microclimate is a thin layer (>1 mm) of air closest to the skin, where we need the temperature to be between 32–35°C (90°–95°F). The body's thermostat is located in the brain and, aided by blood circulation and the nerves in the skin, it regulates the temperature and maintains it within the comfort zone. The human body is only able to create heat and can only cool itself by producing sweat. When we sweat, moisture is secreted from the skin. When it evaporates, the heat also dissipates. We use clothes to protect the body's microclimate and the best way to maintain the temperature within the comfort zone is to dress according to the layer-on-layer principle.

MERINO Wool is nature's own functional material and can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. It also has the ability to stay warm even when wet. Wool is self-cleaning and does not produce foul odors thanks to its creatine which naturally breaks down foul-smelling bacteria present in the skin. Haglรถfs only use Mulesing free wool. 900

Mid layer REGULATES HEAT There are innumerable varieties of mid layer materials and styles and the definition of what exactly can be classified as a mid layer is equally hazy. The only truth is that it should insulate as much heat and allow as much moisture transfer as required and it should be chosen to combine well with the other items of clothing. A thick mid layer is warmer, a thinner one less warm. Allow the weather, activity and your own fitness level to determine what is best for you.

Microfleece is a lightweight alternative with microfiber technology that doesn't bobble.

Stretch fleece has a soft brushed inner which draws moisture through the fabric and disperses it over the material's smooth outer layer which provides an effective moisture transfer. This very stretchy material with its low profile creates less friction against the shell layer and a durable appearance that won't bobble but which will maintain its shape for a long time.

Haglöfs Thermal Pro Fleece is optimized to provide the best heat properties in relation to its weight and ability to be packed. This fleece is manufactured from recycled material.

Making your way up to the summit is sometimes the best thing in the world (edit.note). Enjoy some good company, nice coffee, extra warm clothes in your backpack and good adhesive for your climbing skins. Pick a good route down and enjoy your well-earned ski run!

When you take a break it feels nice to sit on a reinforced jacket such as the Barrier II Q Jacket. A good backpack for summit touring is the Mountain Surf.

Bright colours on your clothes stand out and helps identify where you are. This can be advantagerous not only when you want to impress but more importantly if you are in trouble and need help.

92

Shell-Layer Breathability and degree of waterproofing are the two most important parameters in an item of shell clothing. Knowing what the clothes are going to be used for makes it much easier to choose correctly, not just the material but also the model and features. The length of the jacket, the positioning of the pockets, whether there will be sufficient room for a helmet underneath the hood. These are just a few of the things to consider. Color is another. A primary color is clearly visible and draws attention to your location. This can be advantageous, not just when you want to impress but also if you suffer an accident and are waiting for help. Haglöfs make shell clothes in Gore Soft shell ®, Flexable™, Gore-Tex ® and our own material PROOF™. Read more about these on the next page.

The difference in sea level between high and low tides is two meters. So that Johanna and Anna Malou can still reach the boat when they come down, they have secured the tethering rope to the first ice screw.

108

h a g l รถ f s F a l l / w i n t e r 2 0 11

HOLIDAY ON ICE – an ice-climbing journey in northern Norway Anna Malou Petersson strikes the axe into the ice one more time to get a foothold. The "point of entry" to the ice fall is a small soap dish of a boat, barely three meters long. Anna Malou is standing on the bow trying to maintain her balance while at the same time using all her strength and skill to climb up out of the boat and establish herself on the ice fall with that ever so important first ice screw. The one that will prevent her from falling into the ice-cold water of the fjord.. TEXT: ANNA NYBERG PHOTO: LARS THULIN

The boat was suspiciously cheap and it soon becomes clear why: It leaks. Anna Malou's powerful movements make the water level in the footboards rise above comfortable levels and as soon as she has established herself on the ice fall and secured the first ice screw, her climbing partner, Johanna Tiensuu Stålnacke takes the chance to bail out the boat. They both work frantically and their eyes are alight with focus and intensity. It's as if they have separated their bodies from their minds – with instinctive actions they handle the rope and equipment whilst their eyes and thoughts are always two, three steps ahead in an attempt to analyze and prevent the unexpected. Words are superfluous, the only thing that can be heard is their breathing and the muffled, solid sound of the metal being stuck into the ice. It's the end of February and two days earlier on a still and sunny Monday morning in Narvik, the two girls met on Elgveien, outside Anna Malou's home. Both with a desire to climb ice and get away from their studies and work for a while, but also to make an idea that they once bandied around a reality: to try using a boat to get to the tall, inaccessible ice falls that develop on the cliff-faces of Norway's fjords during winter. The plan is to start from Tørrfjords Småbåtshamn, somewhere they found via the Internet, friends and word of mouth, situated approximately 220 km south of Narvik. However, once there, it seems easier said than done. The exceptionally cold winter has caused the water in the fjords to become

partially frozen and the difference in sea level between the high and low tides is close to two meters; an event that occurs once every six hours. The frozen fjord also makes it difficult to find a mooring site for the small boat and to get all the way to the cliff face and ice fall. Here thorough planning, including a reccee, was undertaken with good help from the local people of Tørrfjord. They are unable to work since their fishing boats have been frozen solid in the port and despite reports that there are good fishing opportunities out at sea, they can do nothing and are happy to assist with everything from fresh water to detailed information about the tide. Tuesday goes by and at bedtime the air is bitingly cold. The Northern Lights dance in the sky and you can follow the slow sweeping movements through the motor home's sunroof. The movements make your eyelids heavy. The little port is quiet and still. Wednesday morning offers sun and minus 18 degrees Celsius. It's almost dead calm and at 3 pm the tide will reach its highest level. The level required for the boat to reach up to the ice fall. The time is actually too late, there aren't many hours of daylight remaining and when it's time to jump into action everything must run perfectly. The morning is one long wait, the girls are like eager racehorses chomping at the bit, exchanges and laughter are replaced with the mechanical filing of axes and crampons and the equipment is checked continually. And then finally, they're off. The team head out onto the E6 and stops at the edge the road

The dark blue water slowly disappears below. Arms and legs obey orders and she moves weightlessly in that indeterminate condition of movement that so many sports people talk about: completely in the moment and in harmony.

in order to be able to launch the boat from the best location. Johanna positions the warning triangle and stations herself a few hundred meters in front wearing her fluorescent yellow jacket and signals to other drives what is going on. Anna Malou heaves the boat and equipment over the crash barrier, and nimbly follows, during which time Johanna parks the motor home and trailer in a lay-by further away. To launch the boat from the shore is tricky enough with the mix of water and ice, but to make it across the few meters from the open water through the horizontal wall of ice in front of the cliff face is quite an undertaking. They make the small engine go at full speed and simply motor all the way up the ice after which Anna Malou gets out of the boat and drags it behind her as close to the cliff face as she dares. The last few meters before the ice fall are open water again. The life-jacket feels good, the thought of sinking to the bottom of the fjord with climbing boots and crampons is not very appealing. Whilst Anna Malou has climbed the first rope length, Johanna has secured and bailed water from the boat. The tide is now starting to go out and in order to be certain that they will still be able to reach it when they come back down, she leaves the first ice screw in place and attaches the mooring rope to it. The ice is cold but it is not too hard and they are fortunate to finally be getting on their way after all the preparation. The color of the sun’s rays begins to deepen and the contrast becomes softer. The dark blue water slowly disappears below. Arms and legs obey orders and she moves weightlessly in that indeterminate condition of movement that so many sportsmen talk about: completely in the moment and in harmony. She quickly reaches Anna Malou, pulls out a down jacket and an energy snack from the backpack she has been carrying and they celebrate the partial victory in coming so far with a warm embrace. Then Johanna continues onward single-mindedly; darkness and the tide are still breathing down their necks and there is no time left for anything else but upwards and onwards. At an even speed they climb meter after meter. From the other side of the fjord they

110

h a g l ö f s F a l l / w i n t e r 2 0 11

seem like two, small, black dots in the middle of the ice fall of the enormous cliff face. From a distance and in environments such as these you have to stare for a while to see that the dots are actually moving and the realization that they are people makes you feel dizzy. The descent proceeds without drama and there is still sea water around the boat and enough light to get back to land. However breaking the ice is a challenge and the “soap dish” gets a new nickname: “the ice breaker”. The sound of the boat’s metal hull crushing the ice is deafening and the echo reverberates between the cliff sides of the fjord in the twilight. They reach the shore just as the last of the daylight disappears behind the horizon and they race through the snow back to the motor home by the light of their head torches. They drive the trailer back to the port where the guard has kindly left the car park lights on. Under the lamp post in the cold, blue light, the champagne cork pops and they toast each other with the tea-scented plastic cups from the thermos flask. The following morning they set out for Senja, 200 km north of Narvik. The weather website has promised temperatures above zero and the owner of Senja Lodge, aspiring mountain guide Bent Vidar Eilersten, has been generous with his tips about the best ice to climb. Bent is a hospitable host along with his ten-week old Malamute puppy, Yeti. It’s Saturday night and good food, climbing tales, slideshows and route maps are the name of the game and after midnight Johanna takes Yeti under her arm and goes to sleep in the motor home. Anna Malou checks the weather for tomorrow by telephone one last time and Bent strolls over to the local pub across the street to greet a few friends from the village. Johanna, Yeti and Anna Malou fall asleep while the wind rocks the motor home and carries the distant laughter from the pub’s guests out over the water and into the distance. And there are still a few days left of their trip. Still time to enjoy the simple freedom in the form of a motor home, some ice screws, double rope, fantastic grand nature and the company of good friends.

Senja lies in the Arctic Ocean and is Norway's second largest island. In June the sun shines all day long, but for a few weeks in winter it is not visible at all.

Nutritious energy bars are essential on long trips. Here is a simple recipe with oat flakes, syrup, sugar and cream: Place seven measures of oat flakes into a mixing bowl. Bring to the boil together with one measure each of syrup, sugar and cream. When the mixture forms a ball in cold water it is ready. Empty the mixture over the oat flakes and fold carefully. Let it cool but don’t let it get cold! Empty the contents of the mixing bowl into a greased plate and roll it out with a greased rolling pin. Cut into blocks.

When out on the summit it is good to have an extra pair of dry, warm gloves for the journey down, such as Helix II Glove. If you plan on camping during winter we recommend the Goga Nordic Winter down sleeping bag.

Lapporten is one of Sweden's most photographed mountains. Together with Sarek and Padjelanta it forms Europe's largest interconnected national park area. According to the legend, it was created when a Sami had difficulty finding his bearings on the mountain with his reindeer herd. Then the mountain was said to have opened and shown his the way. Nowadays most people believe it was the work of the inland ice. MEN´S STYLE

How many times have I arrived at a ski resort and heard the locals saying: “You should have been here yesterday. We had sun and enormous amounts of snow.” Now I've done it. I was there, had my friends around and got to ride the powder until my body screamed with tiredness. The location was the little town called Terrace in northern Canada and we had three meters of snowfall in three weeks. TEXT: PER JONSSON

I stop gazing at my skis and look up at the man standing in front of me in the lift queue. He is over six and a half foot tall and has a long, grey beard which reaches long below his chin. His beanie hat is at an angle and his hair sprawls eagerly out of the sides. “You're new here then?” He asks and introduces himself as Patt. “First day,” I answer. “I'm a local and have ridden the powder at Shames Mountain since before you were born, so you can go in front of me in the queue. Welcome to Shames and I hope you have a good time!” What has just happened feels totally unreal. In the space of a day it has snowed heavily and the lift cabins look more like cakes with too much cream on them than actual lifts. The snow patrol shovels like mad to get things going again and in any resort there would be a long queue of frustrated people, stamping their feet and looking at their watches and wondering if the snow patrol could work quicker. This morning at Shames Mountain there are about 20 people in the queue. Everyone is laughing, drinking watery coffee and talking about skiing. Tips are shared about recently discovered routes for the younger skiers whilst an older man with a ravaged, weather-worn face says in dulcet tones that Shames is getting a little bit too popular. Because a few years ago you could actually ski on fresh snow a week after a snowfall but now there were already tracks after just three days. The others laugh and the ski chatter continues. When the lift finally gets going the small crowd cheers loudly in delight. I slowly slide forward and grab a seat in a lift cabin which is slowly struggling up to the summit. When planning the year's skiing trip, perhaps it's not the most natural choice to fly two hours north of Vancouver to the small ski resort of Shames Mountain. But Ptor, one of the participants on our journey, grew up in Canada and had been told about the area by a friend. Shames Mountain is

a small ski system with three lifts and 28 designated ski runs. The first skiers came here in the early 1990s and today the resort is operated by a few enthusiasts from the nearby town of Terrace. Skiing in the system is good but the potential for easier ski touring is enormous. By starting at ridge above the final ski lift you can reach the summit in about half an hour with the aid of ski skins. From here the possibilities for ski touring are nearly endless. Most skiers at Shames have both the equipment and experience to do this and many have skis with touring bindings, ski skins and carry avalanche equipment in their backpacks. But today we won't need to use ski skins. When I get out of the summit lift the snow is up to our waists and small paths have been created in the snow by people who have been here before us. We make a quick transceiver check and then follow one of the paths that lead us to the first ski run of the day. The run lies exactly on the fall line and there are large and small cushions of snow to jump on everywhere. My skis which are a wider model cut through the snow like butter knives and my speed quickly increases. I press down into a turn and disappear in all the snow that billows up over me. It goes completely white for a second and then I'm out of the cloud, I see where I have to turn and then disappear into the next cloud. The snow is as light as feathers and I get a sensation of being weightless and floating. The skis are heading exactly where I want to go and skiing feels like the easiest thing in the world. Time seems to stand still and I wind up in a state of euphoria. I scream with joy and can't really control myself. Yiihaa, wihooo echoes between the trees during my entire ride down the mountain. When the day is done we sit on the bed of our rented pick-up, with a bear each and watch the sunset. It's been a fantastic day's skiing and all the muscles in my body are tensing under my clothes. A “local” called Jonathan Hopper joins us and is interested in where we come from. He’s a newcomer himself but thinks that he’ll stay here

h a g l ö f s F a l l / w i n t e r 2 0 11

Hopper waxes lyrical about a cabin up in the mountains known as "Andersson cabin". The cabin is supposed to be cozy and the surrounding terrain superb.

forever. “Shames has everything I need”, he says and takes another sip of the locally produced beer and starts talking about the mountain. Operating a ski system is expensive and like many other resorts, Shames Mountain has suffered financial difficulties these past few years. The owners have explained that if nothing happens then they will be forced to close the lifts next season. It’s too expensive and there are too few skiers. The locals stick together here and skiing is a bit like a religion for most of them. As a solution to the financial situation, a team of local entrepreneurs from Terrace have come together. They’re working to sell shares in the mountain with the aim of trying to buy the ski resort and operate it under their own management. Hopper waxes lyrical about a cabin up in the mountains known as “Andersson cabin”. The cabin is supposed be cozy and the surrounding terrain superb. His vivid descriptions have made us decide to go there the next day. We aren’t disappointed. It’s a small cabin with a tapering pitched roof. On the roof there is an enormous amount of snow and the windows on the short end are almost obstructed with all the snow. Inside there is a single large room and in the middle of the floor there is an old wood stove and, along the walls, wooden benches have been stuck together with a variety of natural materials. There is a dining table in the middle of the room and a large paraffin lamp hangs from the ceiling. The stench of old base layers and empty Whiskey bottles assaults my nose. We decide to manage one more run before the sun goes down and attach the skins under our skis and eye up one of the nearby peaks. Moved by the natural scenery and the total silence we slowly walk up the mountain side. The last snowfall brought a great deal of snow and we are occasionally forced to make a detour so that we avoid risking an avalanche. Just as my base layer sticks to my back with sweat and beads of sweat run down our faces, we reach the summit and can examine the landscape in 360°. Wherever I turn I see snow-capped peaks. The mountains are jagged and look unbelievably dangerous. They’re steep with vertical inclines that go all the way

150

h a g l ö f s F a l l / w i n t e r 2 0 11

down to the valley. I catch a glimpse of Alaska and the sea far into the west and our photographer Nicklas smiles and quickly pulls out his camera. We choose a route down that looks safe. We’re alone here, there is no snow patrol like there is in the avalanche safe area and we have to make our own judgments and decisions. The descent is long and meter after meter of mountain disappears at a frenetic pace. There are fallen trees which you can jump to avoid and small corridors of trees which end with a jump onto a pile of snow. The terrain is full of fun and everyone in the group finds a descent that is suited to their style of skiing and skill level. Time goes quickly and at the end of the ride we realize that the sun has already started to go down. We’ve been out all day and our bellies are crying out in hunger. It’s been a fantastic day and Nicklas informs us that his memory card is now full with awesome skiing pictures. When we arrive back at the cabin only a very faint light can be seen over the mountain tops and the stars have begun to appear in the sky. We light the paraffin lamp and get a fire started in the wood stove. It crackles with the dry firewood and embers continue to fly out of the stove’s opening. Food quickly arrives on the table and disappears just as fast into our empty bellies but after a while we start talking about the day we have just had; who performed the coolest somersault, delivered the most obvious comment. Replenished, I push away my plate, lean back against the wall, take a sip of my freshly brewed coffee and smile. How many times have I been told “You should have been here yesterday. We had sun and enormous amounts of snow.” Now I am here. Everything is perfect. I’m sitting in a cabin with my friends and have had an unforgettable day’s skiing and nothing could be better. “I was here today. The sun was shining and there was an enormous amount of snow.” I feel really warm and fuzzy inside and look forward to tomorrow when I get to go out in the Canadian scenery and experience new things once more. I poke a log into the fire, listen to the fire crackle once more and lean back against the table and join the conversation and the now loud discussions.

Synthetic fibers perform excellently in damp environments because they retain their insulating properties, despite being wet and both materials combine a high degree of insulation but are also lightweight.
